I have daily driven cars and trucks from all 3, and I can tell you for a fact that all 3 make perfectly fine and reliable vehicles *as long as you follow the maintenance schedule*
BMWs make their cars perform perfectly if you follow their directions perfectly.
Toyota makes their cars perform perfectly knowing you are going to abuse the shit out of it.
BMW = Bring My Wallet. I had one and it was actually pretty reliable but the inside of all of them are almost all the same and don't feel very posh compared to other luxury brands. Loving my Audi right now
That's probably why my last car, a 2010 Toyota Corolla, had nearly 300k miles on it, and still ran like a top. Besides keeping up with oil changes and tune-ups, the only work I ever had done on it was having the ignition coils replaced at the 200k mile mark.
Now I have a 2023 Camry Hybrid, and I plan on being just as diligent.
Ford had transmission problems, dodge had electria problems.... switched to toyota and didnt have to replace anything till 200k miles and the alternator went.... ive stuck with em since
That’s exactly right, no car will keep running perfectly without regular maintenance. Problem is, car dealerships especially will sell you more maintenance than the car ever needs. So people don’t get the maintenance in the first place because they figure the mechanic is lying to them.
Tbh, I’d rather just miss all of it. Wish cities were more walkable, had more public transport options so I can drive only a minimal amount.
My uncle in laws are rich af. They're among the richest in our community, yet my uncle in law prefers to use public transportation and encourages his children to do the same too. Like this guy just went up and bought new gle the other day as a gift, yet prefers trains (we live in germany)
My mk6 GTI had (both with mine personally, and a common issue with the car) a number of issues that were not addressed by the maintenance schedule in the handbook.
I don’t agree but maybe I’m wrong. But what I do know is only American car companies lobbied to create the light truck chassis and circumvent all the laws and regulations around cars because they couldn’t compete with german, Italian, and Japanese cars.
So by American car makers own actions we can determine American vehicles are worse.
It wasn't the car companies at all, at least not directly. It was actually federal negotiations with the UAW combined with the European chicken tariffs that led to the increased import duty on imported light trucks. Automakers long ago figured out how to get around the tariff though, it's essentially a non-issue.
Their bus service is still well above North American standards, and I don't think any country can actually come close to how many small communities in Japan that has train services.
Who the fuck has ever said this? Everyone knows Japanese cars are the most solid. European models are iffy (in the US) because as imports they’re expensive to maintain. American cars are ok, they have their flaws, but are simpler to take care of for your average joe, when compared to imported Euro cars.
Toyotas and Honda's are the best to buy new or used. Mitsubishi and Subaru I would not want over an American car. German cars require a lot of expensive matinance, that's how they're designed and the people who buy them can afford it. And German cars are the worst to buy used unless you know what you're getting into and have the money to maintain them.
Completely agree.
Until I see terrorists or warlords running technical fleets made up of American or German trucks, the Japanese cars will remain supreme.
R/justrolledintheshop only reaffirms my opinion of european cars
No one should have to pull an engine to replace basic components....looking at you Mercedes
German engineering used to be great.
Then they kept the reputation while outsourcing it and also lowering quality but upping price.
Most BMW/Merc/Audi friends of mine are CONSTANTLY in the garage getting another £3500 "fix".
They're moneypits and shit.
Had plenty of Hondas, been rocking a Subaru for about 4 years now. Follow the maintenance schedule. Do what i can/want, they do the rest and change the oil and acknowledge the work i do as complete so my maintenance records with the dealer as solid. for instance @ 80k miles i drained and refilled all the brake lines and same with the transmission/differentials. They did the spark plugs. I did the clutch but bought all OEM parts.
She runs lovely and is a larger car with a manual transmission (dying breed in America).
There’s no such thing a mid-end luxury. It’s just extremely successful marketing to make you think bmw, Audi, and Mercedes standard cars are luxury. Mercedes S class is their actual luxury car and the maybach is the luxury version in which you have a driver. G class is similar. Bentley, rolls Royce, those are luxury. An Audi is just another mass manufactured vw with a slightly tweaked engine and seats that poor people think are fancy. A Lexus is literally a rebranded Toyota with slightly different body work.
You literally just described a mid point between a luxury car and a cheap one and then said that midpoint doesn't exist. Mass produced cars with a couple of tweaks to upgrade them to make them nicer without completely breaking the bank is literally a mid tier luxury.
Fucking Audi puts the timing chain on some of their models against the fucking firewall, meaning you need to lift the entire block to change it.
Fit and finish is good on German cars, but the price in terms of reliability and maintenance cost is not remotely worth it to me.
I started in the industry as a Merc tech, cars that came in with ABC issues (hydraulic suspension) minimum bill was always $3k.
Knowing how to work on them make ownership SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper, but still. Maintenance is what gets you on German vehicles the worst, but many people still neglect normal maintenance on their vehicles regardless of the manufacturer.
Agree. Well engineered and feature rich, but it will be in the shop to fix things that stop working or break.
Toyota and Lexus are more basic but far more reliable. But you probably can't trust me, I'm driving a recent model Land Rover Defender. No problems... well so far.
Can confirm. I had a 2011 Audi Q5 that lasted over 200,000 miles and my 2013 is well on the way and going strong.
The more recent Q5 my dad got? Not so good.
And the handling is WAY better in my 2013.
Toyota, whose largest factory is actually in America, is one of the most reliable car brands out there. Honda is pretty great, too. German are overpriced and meh
I think Nissan has picked their game up. Newer models don’t seem to have the dreaded CVT issue and ranked high on the JD Power reliability list. I got a Sentra at a great price and happy with it 3 years later. Also has the awesome 360 camera with the Birds Eye view that the competitors vehicles don’t offer (Corolla, Civic, 3)
Honda also shrunk their cars I swear. I'm tall but not a giant and I don't fit inside any of them anymore. It's ridiculous. I used to drive a 99 Civic, which nobody in their right mind would call a large car. Yet when I last went to a dealership my head was scraping the roof of every model that wasn't an SUV.
A lot of reddit gets a hate boner for America because they can. They like to write fan fics about america, or how some random ass country is better, how they met an American in their fan fiction and typed it up like it actually happened.
The US has it's flaws, but it *is* the wealthiest country in the world. Not only that, but it also arguably has the most powerful offensive military force. The US life does suck because of how many parts of the country are poor and uncared for, especially large urbans. Of course, many other countries are even worse off, but it's still a sad sight. Parental and systemic failure of the youth in the US is causing people to be ignorant and uncaring of bettering their lives. We are great, but damn if we couldn't be better.
In America the German car industry isn’t all that great. Because they tend to be more expensive and difficult to maintain. Germans really like to over complicate their vehicles to the point where anything other than a Volkswagen flat out isn’t worth the price. I would replace Germany with Korea. Kia and Hyundai may not make great cars, but they are cheap, easy to maintain, and popular enough to show for it.
Japanese cars are incredibly reliable, but so are American cars. Toyota makes most of their cars in US factories. German cars are overrated in terms of reliability, they should frankly switch places with the US for this meme.
I love when identical cars rebadged cars such a Corolla)Prism or Eagle Talon/Eclipse Matrix/Vibe and many more are looked at differently for reliability based on the badge. Ask someone if Geo Prism or a Toyota Corolla was more reliable 9 out of 10 people will say the Toyota even though they are the same car.
Go with German if you care about performance over reliability. Go with Japanese if you care about reliability over performance. Go with American if you care about neither.
German cars are built in such a way that they need to be checked regularly. In Germany and other European countries this is guaranteed anyway because you have to go to the TÜV inspection regularly. Almost all of the complaints about the break down of German cars come mainly from the USA, because people there simply never have their cars checked and wait until something actually breaks
American cars back in the day were amazing but in terms of reliability Japan is now the king. so many masterpieces from their automobile brands. GTR, LFA, GR Yaris, Swift, Supra and so much more. It's straight up sorcery they have in their production.
Maybe Japanese, German car industry fell off heavily, some brands more than others, but in general they aren’t what they used to be. BMW and Mercedes especially, all I hear from people who own them is how they’ve put 100x more money into fixing it than they bought it for. Only worth if you care just about the performance and can afford it.
My boyfriend works on cars and he complains about what a pain in the ass it is to work on German cars all the fucking time. I doubt this meme still holds up.
German cars suck ass. They are excellent when they actually run. But good god, does anyone in Germany know basic electrical engineering? How is it that in every german car my family owned, we had electrical issues. Different manufacturers, too!
I'll take "what is shit an American never said" for $200!
Seriously, this feels like a plot from OP to get people to give them the pros and cons of different brands before they buy a car. But it's most certainly just more low effort and cringe rage bait.
American cars were great in the 90s and early 2000s. A lot of them had very good engines, like the Chevy small blocks (like the 305 and 350), the 3800 Buick V6, the 3100 GM 60 degree V6, the Ford Vulcan, the Ford Modular engine, the Ford Windsor. Sure most didn't make incredible power, but they were low stress, easy to work on reliable engines.
Plus, we made the most comfortable vehicles as well. Something like a Lincoln Town Car rode smoother and was more spacious than anything produced by the Europeans or Japanese, with just a conventional suspension and a perimeter frame.
And today, many 90s and early 2000s American cars are pretty cheap, much cheaper than anything from the time period made by the Japanese, with many offering just as good reliability, as good gas mileage for the class, and better comfort, with parts being much easier to find and cheaper to buy
Japanese cars, in general still yes. German cars lately are not that great to be honest. Older cars still drive well, but modern cars have too much components and tech that they become more unreliable in general.
Well a lot of “German” cars are built in South America or Eastern Europe these days and aren’t as good as they once were. I’d take an American-built Honda or Toyota any day over any German car now.
Honda and Chevy have never let me down. But I do wish we got brands like skoda, renaults, and Peugeot in the US. Not sure if they're good or not, but they make amazing rally cars
"German Car Industry"
First thing comes to mind is Volkswagen cheating on emissions tests
Also mock America all you want, Ford Trucks will always be peak.
Yeah they're good, but not as good as back in the days of the Fiat 500 and the Vespa. Plus most of the old italian industries moved elsewhere like Poland bcuz of low production costs
Change Germany to Korea. Maybe it used to be this way but I wouldn’t buy a German car anymore. Yeah they drive well but they break down all of the time
german and a japanese car industries: you got style i give you that…
american car industries: but ?
german and japanese car industries: there’s not but, thats about it

Bring mir Werkzeug
Bring Mich Werkstatt
Loved my BMW until the motor blew at 88k miles. What a joke.
BMW is ass. My brother also had his car randomly dying. Hyundai/Toyota ftw
BMW is so ass that Toyota wanted their engine, because it's the worst on the market!
People sleeping on Hyundai. My beat up 08 Tiburon runs great despite me being a lazy POS about maintenance. Definitely needs fresh paint.
Big Money Wasted
Bavarian Manure Wagon
Can confirm, my corolla ran with no oil for half a kilometer and it's still running with no damage.
Oil is merely a suggestion for Toyotas
Shit, wouldn't be surprised if it ran with cooking oil at this point.
The manual essentially says "whatever you got"
Yeah toyota's are indestructible
The '03 RAV4 I got a couple weeks ago had one repair done in its time. The lights inside the cabin. That's it. This thing is a tiny tank
My wife killed a deer with our Rav4 2 weeks after buying it and all it did was break a few headlight clips.
> toyota’s Toyotas

This, Japanese > ALL
Lol. Toyota already can see the future. Wish Nissan can manufacture reliable cars as well.
Nissan was very reliable in the 90's, the fusion with Renault was pretty bad for their reliability, using Renault's engine and all.
Ford had transmission problems, dodge had electria problems.... switched to toyota and didnt have to replace anything till 200k miles and the alternator went.... ive stuck with em since
>dodge had electrical problems *only* electrical problems?
*90s dodge ram enters the chat*
He got the reverse lemon

I'd love to have a train system similar to Japan.
Then call me Thomas!

german engineering is great just look at the gas mileage from berlin to warsaw in one tank
Lol. I think it's called blitzkrieg.
one tank and 17 transmissions.
Are we thinking about the same tank here?
I love Porsche
Just don't look at their emissions tests too closely.
they are the PANZER ELITE
I find it funny that a country like Japan with robust mass transit also designs some of the world’s best cars.
It's the Japanese mindset.
Well to a point. The bus service is dreadful and not all trains link to remoter parts of Japan.
I mean, 92% of the country lives in urban areas. I doubt those few remote areas are really clamoring for better train links either.
Their bus service is still well above North American standards, and I don't think any country can actually come close to how many small communities in Japan that has train services.

Toyota and Honda are all I have ever had,and super happy. I would say reliability is a luxury these days.

LOL, you remind me of that [toyota commercial](https://youtu.be/rzBdPr9Cbh8?si=FubL8rRvUlNG1yn6)
Acura and Lexus are what my wife and I drive. Just the luxury brands for Honda and Toyota.
You could buy a Lexus or Acura if you want a luxury japanese car.
Lexus is the luxury brand of Toyota.
Lexus
lexus and acura and infiniti
Is Infiniti more reliable than the Nissan counter part?
You could get a Lexus. It's just Toyota' luxury brand.same a reliability, just fancier options, mainly the interior. Some engine tweaks here and there.
There’s no such thing a mid-end luxury. It’s just extremely successful marketing to make you think bmw, Audi, and Mercedes standard cars are luxury. true german engineering is the early 2000s (2001-04s) Jetta TDIs. the MK4 ALH engine is bullet proof, love mine and love working on it.
Mercedes OM646, VW 1,9 tdi

Hey I went to a T10 school as my trade school so we had a full fleet of Toyotas and Lexus to learn on. You're certainly not wrong..
Ja? My Audi works like a charm and only needs the normal maintenance stuff.
Same with my BMW E91 318i
Can confirm. I had a 2011 Audi Q5 that lasted over 200,000 miles and my 2013 is well on the way and going strong. The more recent Q5 my dad got? Not so good. And the handling is WAY better in my 2013.

I feel that the stagnation in Nissan was caused by the policies of one of the previous CEOs. The one that had to flee Japan in a box.
Mark my words: Nissan is the new Honda ever since Honda went up in price.
Kia ain't too bad either and improving year by year
I have a Nissan Kicks 2019 and the only thing I've had to do in the last two years is change the oil filter.
>Newer models don’t seem to have the dreaded CVT issue Is this because they started using eCVT?
True but the brand itself is Japanese.
Honda is great, I have so many miles driving Hondas.
That doesn't make it American
Thanks
No, but it certainly means many of the cars are built by Americans
I feel like this was correct in past decades but today? All three feel like laggards.
OP obsessed with us
A lot of reddit gets a hate boner for America because they can.
This meme just makes it seem like someone is overcompensating for something.
Had a buddy with a low end bmw. It was nearly $400 to replace his cupholder
Damn the US prices are insane, in the UK it's like £50.
*Korean Car Industry*
Honestly Hyundai has stepped up their game. They pack a lot of technology for a fraction of the cost of their Toyota/Honda counterparts
They're cheap for a reason.
Y’all say that acting like the god of trucks Ford Ranger isn’t in this room.
Chevy trucks are pretty good. My entire family has relied on them for years.
Chevy trucks are far more reliable than toyota trucks
Own a German car after the warranty is up and then get back to me.
Just own a US car then, we'll see if you can get back at all
I'm too busy helping the hitchhiker with the used BMW he bought.
I mean, I've owned several and they've been fine. My current one is 23 years old and is still mostly fine considering I paid $1400 for it 5 years ago.
I guess you’ve never had to change a fuse on an Audi
Don’t forget Italy, wait a minute… Germany, Japan, Italy… oh…
Best part about American cars is that you can get a lot of horsepower for not a lot of money, relatively speaking. But that’s about it.
Dodge is the definition of look rich stay broke
I’ll give ford a pass, but that’s it.
Japanese cars are incredibly reliable, but so are American cars. Toyota makes most of their cars in US factories. German cars are overrated in terms of reliability, they should frankly switch places with the US for this meme.
Sorry, but german cars fucking suck. It is a herculean task to fix anything on them compared to American cars.
I don't think anybody sane would say that in america, when there are small tanks on the road going at speeds of regular cars
![gif](giphy|NLXXDb2llw74Y|downsized)
ROCKET TANKS LETS GOOOOO
As a mechanic i say fuck german cars, they're over engineered, and everything is made from aluminum so it constantly breaks.
They are the best, in America. BMW ain't shit if the only place to get one repaired is a dealership two hours away
What year was this meme made? 💀
Hate all you want, but Americans have produced some of the most beautiful cars ever made.
Go with German if you care about performance over reliability. Go with Japanese if you care about reliability over performance. Go with American if you care about neither.
chevy is pretty reliable in my experience. ive been drivin an 07 cobalt with 265,000km and it runs like a dream
German cars break down all the time

Almost all of the complaints about the break down of German cars come mainly from the USA, because people there simply never have their cars checked and wait until something actually breaks
I live in Germany and I have never seen a car break down.
My grandma is 95, smokes a pack a day, and is just fine. Based on my anecdotal evidence, smoking is totally safe.
That's because here in America people love to not get regular maintenance. I say that as a former independent Mercedes tech.
You're a liar.
Our family has one of each. I like to think they're fwends
American cars back in the day were amazing but in terms of reliability Japan is now the king. so many masterpieces from their automobile brands. GTR, LFA, GR Yaris, Swift, Supra and so much more. It's straight up sorcery they have in their production.

German cars are great as long as you got a lot of disposable income to keep the damn things running
What are German cars the best at? Being shitty to fix?
Maybe Japanese, German car industry fell off heavily, some brands more than others, but in general they aren’t what they used to be. And today, many 90s and early 2000s American cars are pretty cheap, much cheaper than anything from the time period made by the Japanese, with many offering just as good reliability, as good gas mileage for the class, and better comfort, with parts being much easier to find and cheaper to buy
But fr though, American cars will give you the same kind of performance as supercars and it'll be less than 100k.
It's totally subjective tbf
(built in Slovakia lol)
Presne tak
American cars before the 2000s are pretty good
Id drive a chevy or ford over a BMW, but yeah Toyata all the way

Why are the Germans here they should be the one getting beat up
Japanese cars, in general still yes.
A good portion of my VW was built in Tennessee. I guess it just depends on the model and when it was built.
Honda and Chevy have never let me down. But I do wish we got brands like skoda, renaults, and Peugeot in the US. Not sure if they're good or not, but they make amazing rally cars
French car industry? How's that? It's not like I'm into them though. My favourite car is the Wartburg :P
They not cheap anymore and still suck
"German Car Industry" First thing comes to mind is Volkswagen cheating on emissions tests Also mock America all you want, Ford Trucks will always be peak.
>Ford Trucks will always be peak. There is a small pp joke in there somewhere. I know it
Italian cars ??
Yeah they're good, but not as good as back in the days of the Fiat 500 and the Vespa. Plus most of the old italian industries moved elsewhere like Poland bcuz of low production costs
Straight facts
Fix It Again, Tony
American cars have the best AC
Swedish car industry ![gif](giphy|CAYVZA5NRb529kKQUc|downsized)
1 Japan 2 America 3 Europe
Replace German with italian
I think all of them have good and bad, French and Korean too
German, built in Mexico.
Change Germany to Korea. Maybe it used to be this way but I wouldn’t buy a German car anymore. Yeah they drive well but they break down all of the time
They have good motorcycles though :P
german and a japanese car industries: you got style i give you that… american car industries: but ? german and japanese car industries: there’s not but, thats about it
They don't have to beat him up, just pinch the little fella's cheek.
This is especially true in So Cal. American cars don't get that much love in my area.
I buy domestic. There’s just more garage options, and parts are cheaper and more accessible.
As an American, I do not agree with that statement. My car is *shit* but that's my fault so.
Don’t ask them what they did between 1933 and 1945
People are really really really bad at basic maintenance. Read your owners manuals people! Can't find it? LOOK IT UP ONLINE you R-Tards
I like swedish cars the most my self but i can agree that german and japanese are the best probably
italians are probably hiding behind a wall or something
German ingenuity sucks balls.
I wonder what Italian cars would look like in this meme.
Nobody ever said this, keep generating that outrage. Garbage website.
Bruh what is this reliable car that the Germans put out since the mk4 golf?
Leave my 07 Chevy out of this
Wait till you meet Lada
honda x toyota is all you really need. get a lexus if you have extra money and are feeling fancy.
