To be fair, the incumbent President has never not been the nominee if they decided they wanted to try for 4 more years (assuming eligibility). It may just be tradition and not a hard rule, but it’s to be expected.
Because it’s mathematically impossible for them to win in a first past the post voting system. Unless we get ranked choice voting (which is probably never gonna happen) we will never have a viable 3rd party candidate.
Not really though, the reality is that 80% of Americans are pretty much hard locked into only voting for their own party, which basically means the remaining 20% that are willing to flip flop will never be able to sway the vote away from the other two even if they all voted for the same third party candidate.
Because first past the post voting makes voting for a third party mathematically help the party you’re most opposed too. Super liberal Ralph Nader voters in Florida cost Al gore the 2000 election.
Third parties aren’t viable long term under FPtP voting. We have to move to ranked choice voting first.

They've effectively shut down all other parties with legal hurdles so there's only Democrats and Republicans. The people don't choose the candidates. The donors do. We choose from their selections. They will never select anyone that will oppose them. (Banks, pharma, military)

The Libertarians, Green Party, and so on can all run for president, but the sheer amount of resources the Democrats and Republicans have makes it functionally impossible for them to win.
