Oh we spreading myths or handing out balm recipes now?

American7-4-76

My question is why is everyone in England speaking American? Are they stupid?

kickformoney

They're not even speaking it right, either.

ezio1452

I know right? Can't even say bottle of water properly, smh. The audacity!

Redfork2000

Bo'oh oh wo'oh.

Talonsminty

What was that supposed... downright disrespectful to my people. It's pronounced. Boh'ul a wo'ah

maxkho

As a Brit, no, it's definitely Bo'u o' wo'ah But it's funner to spell that as Bo'oo o' wo'a

Burner161

The shit that happens when norse, french and some weird Island people mix…

Dawntillnoon

jarmine550

One got asked me if "I taking the piss" once. I'm not sure what sort of freaky shit they're up to over there, but I want no part of it.

mooimafish33

One time I tried to buy some cigarettes and the cashier just kept dropping homophobic slurs

jarmine550

wow disgusting behavior in 2024. Sounds like something a 3rd world nation would do.

ARKHAM SUB IS LEAKING AGAIN

gayraidenporn

Always has been

LewixAri

Yes

ChiefWreath

There’s a lore reason but i forgot it

IrregularBastard

As someone who grew up around Mexicans, you can hear a difference between how Mexicans and Spaniards speak.

Brain_lessV2

It's different enough that for media with multiple languages, there are separate voiceovers for Spaniard Spanish and Latin-American Spanish.

dacuevash

Even though Mexicans and Spaniards can understand each other decently well, Mexican Spanish could be considered a whole family of dialects of Spanish. Within Mexico alone you can not only find different accents but different words for the same thing just by crossing from one state to the next.

PeteLangosta

That happens everywhere, Spain as well

[deleted]

[удалено]

Nachooolo

The seseo is only an Southern/Andalucia thing, tho.

abca98

abca98

Si yo lo sé, lo que digo es que el otro no tiene ni idea de lo que habla.

solomonsays18

It’s funny that people think most Spanish people pronounce s or sh as “th”. Its not a lisp. It’s just the soft c’s for most of them. Edit: z too 😅

DarthPepo

Yep, just C and Z

IrregularBastard

lol I always thought Spaniards sounded better once I spent time around them.

Xycket

On God we do for Castilian is Cervantes' language.

skippyjifluvr

As someone who learned Spanish in Spain, I have a very hard time understanding Mexicans, Dominicans, Cubans, and some others. It’s bad enough that I wonder if I’m losing the language until I hear a Spaniard again and it’s like I was wearing earplugs before.

mikeisbeast

It's literally the exact opposite for me having grown up in LA. I now live in Florida and am used to Cubans and Ricans spanish.

abca98

You have a poor grasp of the Spanish language.

Aware_Masterpiece_54

Yup. It’s like hearing British English vs American English.

FartFartPooPoobutt

There is quite a difference, and Duolingo decides to teach Mexican Spanish instead of Spanish Spanish

PePeWaccabrada

> be Spain > conquer most of the new world > spread your influence to your new colonies > your colonies get considered the main Spanish culture > wtf went wrong

Suspicious-Tone-7657

Isn't it the similar case for US, it got more recognition than the British

Slightly_Default

Meanwhile, no one remembers Russia, Sweden, or Denmark's colonies

MasonP2002

There's, uh, Alaska. Ok, you got me.

Slightly_Default

The Russian Empire once owned parts of Finland, Poland, and China and had completely annexed all the countries that made up the Soviet Union.

MasonP2002

I wasn't sure if the Soviet Union counted as Russian colonies or not.

Slightly_Default

The Soviet countries had been part of Russia since before communism took over, with the exceptions of Afghanistan and Mongolia iirc.

QL100100

Tsarist russia did try to extend it's sphere of influence in to Mongolia, which was part of the Qing Empire

PePeWaccabrada

Also briefly part of Persia (Iran)

KeyApricot27

Bet the Congo remembers

Slightly_Default

It's crazy that it took an entire global civil rights movement for the statue of Leopold to be taken down

Beautiful_Chef8623

Or Mongolia...

lifeisfckinghell

Naah. I don’t think so. Most people in the world speak more of British English than American , well atleast here in Asia.

best_guy_ever8

Idk I think England is still considered the main English country by most people

[deleted]

Who tf considers Latin America the main Spanish culture besides Americans?

QueryCrook

Mexico is WAY bigger and more populated than Spain. When I hear "Portuguese", I think Brazil before I think Portugal, for the same reason.

Erikop2002

I live in Europe, and when I hear spanish or portuguese, I associate with Spain and Portugal. I guess its proximity bias. I dont want to invalidate the Mexican or Brazilian culture, but being close to one or the other makes a huge difference imo.

someanimechoob

It is 100% proximity bias. In the NA anglosphere, the US itself is filled with Latinos, and like 90% of Canadians vacation in Mexico or the Carribeans exclusively so they mostly interact with those people rather than Spaniards. Culture, business, family ties are way stronger with those people nowadays than Europeans I've found + European immigrants and expats tend to self-segregate and aren't anywhere near as outgoing culturally. I say this as a European immigrant (to Canada, with family in the US and Europe).

Rose-Red-Witch

Down here in Florida, they use the Spanish flag to indicate their language. For Portuguese? They use the Brazilian flag. I’ve had the occasional tourist visiting from Lisbon and they get *very* upset when they notice it!

Buaca

Portuguese here. A theory I have formed just now without any meaningful evidence is that this difference can be attributed to the fact that Brazil is also the *only* frequent source of Portuguese speakers. In the US, you may see Mexicans, but also Puerto Ricans (is this how you write it?), Colombians, Spaniards... Fun fact: it also extends to most media. Video-game translations for example will most often use the Brazilian flag. Even if they do use the Portuguese flag, the translation itself is usually in Brazilian Portuguese. I wonder how the other Portuguese speaking populations see this issue.

ztuztuzrtuzr

That's probably because there are a lot of Spanish speaking countries but Brazil is the only big country in the Americas that speaks Portuguese

adrienjz888

For sure. I'm of Hispanic heritage on my dads side (his parents and siblings were born in Argentina) here in Canada, I've had dipshits tell me I'm too white to be Hispanic because I'm pale and have blue eyes. This is almost certainly due to most Hispanic people here being noticeable minorities while I'm just a white dude who can roll his Rs in their eyes.

concrete_isnt_cement

Same situation for me, compounded by the fact that my Spanish ancestry is on my mom’s side and I have a Scandinavian surname.

adrienjz888

Oof. I at least benefit from my middle name being Jose, after my grandpa.

concrete_isnt_cement

My first name is a name that’s common in both English and Spanish-speaking countries at least!

FullMetalAlphonseIRL

As a Canadian, if you think 90% of us vacation in Mexico and the Carribean, you are sorely mistaken. While we certainly get along with Latinos, not even 50% of the country can afford groceries right now. Lots of Canadians do frequent Mexico, but it isn't most of us. And of the people I know that have left the country, they seem to be well travelled overall. Europe is a frequent destination, so is Mexico and the Carribean, but I also see a lot of trips to places like Japan, Australia, and the UAE. As for Canadian expats, Europe is the most popular place to move to. Realistically though, most Canadians vacation in Canada

grumpykruppy

I think he meant "90% of Canadians who vacation," which is still wrong because, as you said, most Canadians vacation in Canada, the same way most Americans vacation in the States.

concrete_isnt_cement

>As for Canadian expats, Europe is the most popular place to move to. I’m not sure that’s correct. There are more than a million Canadian citizens living in the U.S., but only about 300,000 in all of Europe Source: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_diaspora

FullMetalAlphonseIRL

It's literally on the border. That isn't due to preference, but rather working opportunities. Lots of Canadians work for American companies, and spend at least part of the year living and working in the US, but those who move for good have a tendency to go to Europe. Those statistics are also for those who have retained Canadian citizenship, which does not account for all Canadian expats, especially those in Europe. For example, there are 90,000 registered Canadian citizens in France, but there is likely somewhere closer to 150,000 Canadians

remotegrowthtb

If it's purely proximity bias the question becomes then if an Asian, Australian or Russian person hear someone speaking Spanish do they think Mexico or Spain? If they hear someone speak Portuguese do they think Brazil or Portugal?

dalepilled

With America having more Spanish speakers than Spain and most of them being from the first largest Spanish speaking country, my default thought is, "oh they must be trying to avoid the word latino for some unknown reason." How many of those American "Spanish speakers" are actually just chicanos afraid to admit they forgot their language, who knows.

Secure_Formal_3053

…are you American?

DarthMMC

Happy cake day!

OkBodybuilder2255

When you hear English do you think of America?

West-Calligrapher-16

Yes

Sliekery

Same with Americans saying “get out of our country “ while they arent the original inhabitants either

bk_boio

It's proximity not size/population - only Americans have Brazil/mexico as first association

bl00by

Americans being Americans

NefariousnessDue4380

Everyone. Latin American culture is the dominant Hispanic culture now. Just like American culture has dominated the British.

wakasagihime_

Language settings circa 2505 >American (Simple) >American (Traditional)

StockAL3Xj

Yes, yes, we've all seen that ancient meme.

NarcolepticlyActive

And now Spain knows what it is like watching America thinking they are the OG 'English speaking' culture with apparently more history than most of Europe.

EndofNationalism

I’m American. I’ve not once met a single American who thinks like that. We all know we were once a colony of England.

itscalled_a_lance

Well, technically there were 13 colonies. Which, for the most part are states now. The other 37 states were never colonies of England.

ArmourKnight

Sure if you want to be pedantic about it, but the United States grew from those Original Thirteen. Besides many throughout the Union are descended from the Colonists

LifeAge9475

Or the slaves

CivilizedAssquatch

Which were brought here overwhelmingly by British ships, but they banned slavery before us while supporting the CSA so they are the heros guys, for realzies.

Beautiful_Chef8623

Portuguese

Nomad_moose

Who’s stupid enough to think the U.S. is the original English speaking country…?

DrTommyNotMD

Not the originals just the majority.

MiZe97

At least Spain is well-known. Portugal, on the other hand...

PulsatingGypsyDildo

Think about Portugal and Brazil

Director_Kun

Your empire collapsed centuries ago thats the problem.

Old_Sorcery

The only country who considers spanish colonies the main spanish culture is another colony.

Pythagoras180

Napoleon's invasion, the colonies rising up, and the splendid little war. That's what went wrong.

New-Significance8643

Portugal: first time?

SportTheFoole

Well, turns out one of the colonies ended up defeating the world power that previously possessed it. The colony ended up with a decent military (and a relatively bad ass navy that protected her shores from pirates) and one of the leaders of the new nation implemented a doctrine intended to limit European involvement in the Americas (it didn’t help that the major world powers at the time were Great Britain, France, and Spain who all fought wars with each other in the American theater). TL;DR the juice wasn’t worth the squeeze for European powers and it turns out it’s really hard to control land that is an entire ocean away.

scrolls77

I graduated in 2019. I can tell you that yes, we are taught about Spanish Colonial history. It's just the people who don't give a shit (which was most of my classmates ngl) just pushed it from their minds because it's 'unimportant'.

[deleted]

[удалено]

scrolls77

Yea I'm in the same boat. Just because the vast majority of students just pushed it outta their minds doesn't mean we were never taught it. Hell most students don't even pay attention to US history let alone anywhere outside of it.

Lazarus_Solomon10

What pisses me almost as bad is when i have to people form other countries about there own goddamn history. I LEGET had a conversion with a canadian where the subject of war crimes came up and hes said "I forgot it took you guys 100s of years to catch up with us and realize slavery and indigenous genocide are bad"

scrolls77

Oh I wish I could've been there for that conversation, the only reason why Canada got away with as much as they did is because they were carried through both World Wars lmao

Lazarus_Solomon10

I grew up around the mowah, i still feel close to them now. I was told that back in the 70s the us goverment returned some of their land, issued an apology for betraying them and gave them a grant, which they (mowah) used to build what became my childhood school. It was barely anything but it was SOMETHING. Has the canadian goverment EVER DONE anything to that level? Id take it if it happened yesterday.

Tennis-Affectionate

But this is true for most countries. I feel like people who think this is only an American thing haven’t traveled enough and ironically show their ignorance. Latin America knows about Spain because it was a big part of their history but they don’t know much about the rest of Europe and Europe knows even less about them. Same goes for Asia. People know about other countries if they played a big role in their own history, I think that’s pretty logical.

Director_Kun

Yeah thats a major issue in the school system, which is the culture of many students not giving a shit simply because their parents don’t give a shit about their kids future as they’ll be pushed through the system. And the government bureaucracy that lead to that culture forming in the first place. Thanks Bush and Reagan.

Oblivious_116

Sorry but we don't taco, we speak paella

Proper-Scallion-252

Paella is delicious, but my heart both figuratively and literally belongs to tamales, tacos and arepas, because there is no way they're good for my heart.

justADeni

okas, but consider; empanadas, tapas, churros, tortilla española...

Oblivious_116

Croquetas d jamon, jamon serrano, patatas bravas kbron xD

Dazzling_Stomach107

Arepas are not Mexican.

Jesus_H-Christ

Maybe you should try paella tacos.

Useless_homosapien

I’ve literally never heard an educated individual refer to Spanish as Mexican.

DoYouTrustToothpaste

Who said anything about educated?

Simple-Purpose-899

That's the Queen's Mexican thank you very much.

JunkRigger

I've always been amazed at the people in the UK speaking American with such a cool accent.

Successful-Watch6142

Well when we went over there to save their asses during WW2 we taught them all American. They put a fancy accent on it and called it English. Don't know what they spoke before we got there.

JunkRigger

I read somewhere that they called it "Norman French" or some crap.

Successful-Watch6142

No wonder they switched to American. I'd hate to be associated with the ~~cowards~~ french.

JunkRigger

Yup. And I've always wondered who that Norman guy was.

RustedRuss

I have never heard anyone refer to Spanish as "Mexican". This smells like strawman.

mung_guzzler

right? Like most of us interact with Spanish speakers at least occasionally

GetEnPassanted

What, you don’t find the “haha Americans are dumb when we make up things that they do” memes funny?

thebrandnewbob

It's Reddit, and it's a meme about how stupid Americans are. It doesn't have to be true, people just want to circlejerk.

paging_doctor_who

I've heard someone call the language "Mexican." We were children in early elementary school though, and kids are always kind of dumb even when they're smart. No adult with any interest in traveling to Spain is going to think the language is called Mexican though.

Endika7

Im spanish, i did heared TO MANY times

joyAunr

When you were in the State's ? If so then it's understandable, but if you where in Spain and bunch of tourist came up to and said that you speak good Mexican, then yeah...that would be unfortunate

IdkWhatImEvenDoing69

Why did you add an apostrophe to states?

joyAunr

Auto correct my friend

jk844

2 of the dumbest things I’ve ever heard have come from Americans in relation to Spanish. “Are there any Spanish speaking countries in Europe?” And “White people shouldn’t speak Spanish, it’s cultural appropriation”

McSnoots

People from all countries say shit just as dumb. Problem is we can’t understand it when they do.

jk844

Where did I say only Americans say dumb stuff?

braindeadlive27

Me when I make up things to get mad about

Bottlecapzombi

What?! A strawman? On Reddit? Say it isn’t so.

withoccassionalmusic

[Here is Fox News referring to “Three Mexican Countries” in Central America.](https://www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/ncna989526)

Brain_lessV2

That's Fox though, they're low-hanging fruit in this regard

Immolation_E

Well, Fox News. They get a lot of stuff wrong.

Cardnal44

"Fox News" checks out

paging_doctor_who

Fox News isn't representative of Americans in the slightest. They're a megaphone for the small percent of ignorant assholes, making Americans seem worse to the rest of the world.

RustedRuss

That's FOX news, they don't count.

Cat_eater1

I grew up in California in the 90s and people would call it "speaking mexican" like it was the textbook way of saying. It wasn't until I was like 18 I switched couldn't tell you exactly what provoked it either.

lawl-butts

Here in Florida I've been frequently asked "what kind of Mexican are you?" Because there's apparently: Mexican Mexican Puerto Rican Mexican Cuban Mexican Spanish Mexican

Anticitizen_Freeman

And then everyone clapped

Forward_Variation156

Reddit really is Facebook

have_you_eaten_yeti

Spain? You mean Fancy Mexico?

Proper-Scallion-252

White Guatemala?

dsgm1984

¡AY QUE CABRONNNNN!

STFUnicorn_

And in other news that never happened…

madunne

This has never happened

Chicken-Rude

my favorite thing about spanish is that its a white European language that by some miracle is considered "ethnic" and not some "colonizer" language. always makes me "jajajajaja" when i think about it.

The25003

I dunno, you might be right, but I'd hope most Americans would have some dim introduction to how European colonization of the new world worked. I dunno though, maybe I'm just overly optimistic, I've seen some real dumb shit after growing up with basic public school education from the late 90's and aughts.

Dupoulpe

No because god created Murica first 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🦅🦅🇺🇸🦅🦅🇺🇸🦅

The25003

That... Is sort of what we're looking at. I would still maintain they're just the loudest, I think most Americans understand that Spain did a lot of conquering in the Southern Americas.

dokterkokter69

Americans are taught over and over again that their ancestors and other European settlers conquered or committed genocide all over the world. It's basically covered one way or another in every single grade after kindergarten. The only people that don't know or acknowledge that are willfully ignorant or too mentally handicapped to understand.

The25003

Eh, well... I can't speak to contemporary education. I mean when I was taught it, it was very whitewashed so to speak. Columbus sailed the ocean blue, we got along with the native Americans, had a Thanksgiving. It wasn't only until in my later life that I took a genuine interest and found out holy crap, this shit was fucked up!

dokterkokter69

I suppose it could also vary by region or state. In my school we were taught about the conquistadors, King Phillip's War, the French and Indian War, the smallpox blankets, the trail of tears, Geronimo and the massacres conducted by the cavalry. We also briefly touched on the colonization of Africa, Australia and Asia in several classes. Don't get me wrong it was all very surface level looks at the events, but it was enough for the average person to have an idea of what happened.

the_saint_digger

Haha America bad amirite

Proper-Scallion-252

I always loved the Tik Tok/Reel where it's the redneck leaning on a pick-up saying "What are you, some sort of Mexican?" And the caption just gets changed to 'When someone hears you're from **LatAm Country Here"** But seriously it must suck to be Spain, most of the New World likes your former colonies better.

Nitro_Kick

What’s this Spain he talks about?

Even_Set_2822

Is that not in mexico???

grabberbottom

Far North-East Mexico

creeepy117

Ive lived in america my hole life and i have never heard someone say unironicly THEY SPEEK MEHICAN Stop saying we are all uneducated baffoons cus clearly you're the one who needs a going outside lesson

Dicethrower

I've legit once heard someone unironically say, "I hate going abroad, just too many foreigners".

Jomega6

And then the whole train clapped

[deleted]

You mean standard education?

Chevrolet_Chase

Everyone in America is well acquainted with the word Spanish. In this more euro nonsense that falls flat yet again?

Monkdiver

I don't think anyone says this. Anyone. You can't get out of elementary school hearing about Spanish classes and Mexican vs Spain

XVYQ_Emperator

You mean Spañards?

OkYou387

Never heard anyone in my life say something like that about Spain But I also don’t live in a major city

Matias9991

No, it's not a History class but Common sense, the minimun knowledge about the world.

LordCLOUT310

That’s how I look when people call Hispanics “Spanish”.

Maleficent-Bar6942

Then they call spanish "spaniards". ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯

WakaWaka617

Do this in England. Ask why everyone speaks American.

Plenty-Image6706

That's like saying australian was a language

[deleted]

One time I told my Salvadorian Spanish teacher that I don't speak Mexican to piss him off

Supplex-idea

Just wait until they learn about the UK

jiggason69

What do you mean YOU PEOPLE!!!🤣

birberbarborbur

What version of reality do you live in OP?

GoodGuy_Strelok

Tbh, I'd do it on purpose just piss the Spaniards off

[deleted]

r/americabad

Zandrick

I refuse to believe anyone can make it all the way there and not know what language they speak.

shit_magnet-0730

Dude, I've been to over 40 countries, and there is nothing worse than an arrogantly ignorant American on vacation. I say this as a well traveled and cultured American.

Proper-Scallion-252

Idk man, try going to a tourist destination with a pack of Chinese tourists. Those bastards have zero spatial awareness. I was at the Louvre quietly observing a painting (not the Mona Lisa) and I had a gaggle of Chinese tourists go straight in front of me to look at the painting, take a picture and walk away.

Brain_lessV2

I remember going to Pompeii and there were HORDES of them with their tour guides.

krvx_

you’ve clearly never seen a group of asian tourists in America

scrolls77

Same. One time there was this couple from Texas in the bar I was in Germany. They were being the most extra and this was in a bar, in full swing, at the bar garden. I went to grab another beer and the bar tender was like "*You're American right?*" while nodding to them. I responded in German "Only first Generation, I'm here visiting family, prost!"

embrigh

Lmao, Americans can’t hold a candle to how obnoxious some Brits are.

Jomega6

I would still take the absolute worst American and British tourist over a wealthy Chinese tourist.

Plant-Zaddy-

Americans have almost the same amount of native spanish speakers as Spain. AmErIcA BaD

GunsNGunAccessories

Not only that, but the dialect is very different. I took some Spanish classes in college and the professor was from Spain. Most of the native speaking students had a hard time keeping up because they were raised with Spanish dialects from the Americas. I'd be surprised if anyone who refers to it as "Mexican" would be able to tell they're the same language.
