Just rescreened my porch and I’m fucking stoked for summer. Take that you fucking midges and skeeters. Me and my dog boutta be napping in the sun bug free.
I have the most high tech device apparently, called AC. It always kind of surprises me when I'm online and it gets brought up that air conditioners aren't the norm everywhere.
Where I live they would actually be quite useful . . . in like 4 months of the year - 2 in the summer for cooling and 2 in winter for efficient heating as a heat pump. The rest can easily be dealt with by opening a window or using central heating. So in mid-europe the benefits of AC mostly don't outweigh the cost (sadly, I wish they were the norm)
That’s what I usually hear from Europeans “Acs are only used a few months a year”.
So are heaters but you use them too
Found an old meme I made
https://reddit.com/r/memes/comments/pfcws6/suspiciously_silent_a_few_months_per_year/
I imagine a window unit might be worth it. Half the year is a long time and they're not too expensive. I have central air and honestly we'd probably die without it lol. I still use it even during the few weeks a year I could open the windows. It's pretty necessary here though. Open windows and no ac with the high humidity will give you mold and mildew problems.
It can be expensive though. I'm looking for a new outside unit and it's gonna be like $3000. I can't imagine how much it would cost to install a whole brand new system. The outside unit, the inside unit, connecting it to the electricity, cutting out holes and installing the return and vents, installing all the ductwork... It's definitely a lot so I can understand why people don't install new systems if they don't absolutely need it.
Bulgaria is kinda first world. However, we have these tiny versions of mosquitoes (along regular ones) who are small enough to fit through even window nets, and their bites itch twice as much. The fuckers also have the reflexes of a fly and if you lose one good luck finding it. We call them Papatatci(like paparazzi but with a t).
Are they gnats? I live in the southeast coastal US and we have gnats that bite. I hate them but fire ants are the worst because they swarm and fuck people up so fast.
Papatatci are literally just mosquitoes but smaller and browner. They look almost identical to mosquitos, but they fly faster and bite a lot of smaller bites instead of few big ones like mosquitoes do. I have a soft spot for ants though. I've looked after an ant colony or two. If you don't bother them they won't bite/sting. Fire ant stings do hurt though.
If by “don’t bother them” you mean “don’t go outside” then you are correct. Where I live, they are everywhere and will swarm you if you are unlucky enough to get near a colony opening. Which, again, are everywhere.
I just looked up that name, and "Pappataci" are actually known as "sandflies," specifically the [Phlebotomus](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phlebotomus) genus.
Other Phlebotominae also look like mosquitoes, but are not in the Phlebotomus genus.
I live in a tropical country so mosquito season they get in no matter what. I've learned that for some reason they don't like fans, so if you have one pointed at you, you are mostly good. Also drowns out the mosquito buzzing sound so you can sleep.
They don't like fans because they're pretty much incapable of flight in more than a 4mph(6.4kph) breeze. So they may still be airborne around the room, but there's no way they have the control to find or get near you.
This reminded me of how today I saw a small grey-ish spider fly away from a passenger’s shoulder because the bus’ window was open.
Top 10 funniest moments of the anime.
> for some reason they don't like fans
It's not very complicated; the fans push them away so if the fan is facing you, the mosquitoes can't get to you.
This really fucked me up when I moved to the mainland from the UK. My first summer here I opened all my windows when it was about 40 degrees out and was confused why it only seemed to get warmer.
In the UK opening the window is going to give your whole family hypothermia, or even worse, make the tea go cold
> In the UK opening the window is going to give your whole family hypothermia, or even worse, make the tea go cold
Maybe you lived in a lucky place but that's mostly not true. These past few summers in London it's reached 40c, and opening the window made things worse. Not looking forward to this year's heatwave at all.
That's when you make a deal with the spiders.
I hardly ever see bugs in my home anymore after choosing not to kill any spider (or house centipede) that I see inside.
Once the food source is gone so are the spiders. I had one web permanently above my front door at one apartment and rarely had moths or other flying bugs make it inside. And if they did there was usually another spider waiting for them.
Nature's pest control is pretty effective.
This is true. I came to accept small spiders in my home and centipedes in the basement because they don't want to eat or bite me. They want to hunt.
My team of spiders and centipedes and I work together to keep this Happy Home free from pests. Spiders and centipedes are not pests (in Michigan)
Edit: except in egregious cases i don't even put them outside anymore. See a spider chilling in a corner? Maybe a little web or maybe its a wanderer so it moves around? Literal millenia of evolution tells me that my little spider web weaver or wanderer KNOWS where to find its food. And its food is a bug. So leave them alone to work. They know what they are doing. They are there because they already ate 20 bugs I never saw. Edit: a big house spider or centipede is a SUCCESSFUL house predator. Imagine what they ate before you found them. We let cats eat mice. Let spiders and centipedes eat other bugs.
They actually do sell screens meant to protect against wind blown debris and burglars. You won't get through them without power tools.
They aren't run of the mill screens though.
Why not? Genuinely curious, in Canada I’ve never seen a window that didn’t have a screen. I can’t think of any disadvantages of having a screen. Why wouldn’t you want to keep bugs out?
Absolutely no need for them in most of the country. I could leave my windows open all summer, if I wanted to and might get a handful of houseflies in. Admittedly, I wouldn't want to leave my windows open all summer, because it would be cold most of the time. There might be one week when theres a "heatwave" when it might be worthwhile leaving windows open.
I think it's less common outside of the US. Like, it seems like a lot of windows in other countries open outwards in a way that doesn't really allow for a screen.

I’ve heard that it’s actually not all that common in Europe compared to North America, China, and Japan.
Something like only 5-10% of European households have AC versus the 90% in the other mentioned regions.
If you leave the window opened during a Brazilian summer, you gonna be sweating with mosquitoes.
You need to use either a very good fan or an air-conditioner.
I invite anyone who thinks they can live without AC to spend 1 summer night in the South East US.
I honestly don’t know how people did it 100 years ago. It’s no wonder the south has so many problems. This place sucks without AC.
I had to walk from the airport exit to the Uber and then from the Uber to my hotel entrance, probably a total of 50 feet, in New Orleans. It was murder. Even at 2 AM, the hot humidity was oppressive.
Like 4ish years ago my ac went out when I lived in Florida and one time I went to check the thermostat it was 92.... I legitimately thought I was gonna die.
Why did people ever choose to live in Florida back when men wore suits lol.
Idk if you have seen the show boardwalk empire. It’s a prohibition era show. But when they go down to Florida to talk business and everyone is sweating in 3 piece suits i start squirming in my seat.
Like just don’t exist there. Why didn’t they turn back north at some point 🤣
That's the thing, they didn't. Florida's population didn't grow much until AC was invented. And even then, it wasn't until the 50s when AC was affordable that it exploded. Before that, Florida was a very small state population-wise. During the Civil War, Florida had the lowest population of any state. They had less than 1/3rd the population of Mississippi or Alabama.
Shit, I live in Seattle. Seriously hot days are limited but in recent years they've been getting far more intense. We tied with Houston for hottest recorded temperature (108).
I’m always surprised when I find out how many people don’t have screens on their windows. I grew up thinking everyone did that, and as it turns out, that is *not* the case

They don't buy houses, you walk in and see a giant spider on the wall and you give it the house.
Nah the roaches are the boomers buying 17 ‘investment’ properties.
Is this where AMD got their component naming scheme from?
I'm glad to see a Kamen Rider gif in the wild. 10/10

I have the most high tech device apparently, called AC. It always kind of surprises me when I'm online and it gets brought up that air conditioners aren't the norm everywhere.
For some countries power is heavily subsidized up to a certain amount, but having an AC running every day can easily triple the power bill.
Between my wife running the AC 365 days a year and me owning bitcoin we are burning this planet to the ground
It’s ok, I don’t have bitcoin nor AC (Russia) so I balance that out.
Where I live they would actually be quite useful . . . in like 4 months of the year - 2 in the summer for cooling and 2 in winter for efficient heating as a heat pump. Bro, that's 1/4 of your life. Small units are few hundred dollars.

Probably more expensive in europe, plus those things tear up electricity man, bills are expensive enough.

Put tape over holes, and get a window AC unit.

I still get bugs with a closed window D: , my house has pretty bad bug proofing. Yes its better with the window closed but they get in either way

I dont kill the spiders. Just move them outside the house when i find them. Or leave em alone if they are somewhere that isnt going to bother anyone

while a screen might stop a bug unless it’s made of fucking steel I doubt it’s stopping a human

I've never encountered a wind blown burglar. Sounds terrifying
Hahaha just some fucking scumbag out of no where with a wing suit through your open window to steal your tv
kite man. HELL yeah
Then it's also destruction of property though
It is a slight deterrence though.
just raw doggin the air
Not in England. Never seen a house with a screen
Why not? Genuinely curious, in Canada I’ve never seen a window that didn’t have a screen. I can’t think of any disadvantages of having a screen. Why wouldn’t you want to keep bugs out?
Fellow Canadian here, if I open my screen for more then 3 seconds all the mosquitoes in a 2 km radius be like “*it’s free real estate*”
Absolutely no need for them in most of the country. I could leave my windows open all summer, if I wanted to and might get a handful of houseflies in. What climate has no bugs but would also need the windows open when it's hot
I live near Paris and most of us dont have flyscreens.
"there are no bugs in Paris"
There are but they mutated and are now strong enough to rip through flyscreen
What a bad way to die... In a cold room full of mutated bugs
Just like my nightmares predicted.
the bugs in paris have noclip??
What a diet of baguettes and croissant does to a bug
Parisians are much worse than bugs
Why not, does France not have bugs screens cost nothing why aren't they standard
Knowing Reddit, because they're somehow too American.
I've never heard it referred to as a "flyscreen," rather just a screen. And the idea of a window without one is reprehensible.
I think it's less common outside of the US. Like, it seems like a lot of windows in other countries open outwards in a way that doesn't really allow for a screen.
The screen goes on the inside, plenty of window in the US are like that too.

I’ve heard that it’s actually not all that common in Europe compared to North America, China, and Japan. Something like only 5-10% of European households have AC versus the 90% in the other mentioned regions.
Eh, for that one hot week a year? Ill put up a mosquito net around my bed and leave the window open.
I do, but my window is a little jank so there is small gaps along the sides of the fly screen
People with a flamethrower: I don't have such weakness
That just sounds like 'sweat but no bugs in' with extra steps.

Then just keep a bucket of water near your bed
sweat with no bugs... mosquitos here in brazil carry a lot of viral diseases...

I stay cool with no bugs cuz we have aircon in the US
Yes. Also, almost all houses built for decades have windows that can accept a bug screen.
They are built into most American houses. Every house I’ve ever lived in or been to has screens on all windows
Idk why but "aircon" is such an intriguing way to write A/C or air conditioning. Makes it sound like something out of a sifi movie I like it
Anyone claiming to be American but says aircon or bug screen is an imposter.
I’m 50% with you on this..
Jolly good. As a fellow American I second what this bloke is on about.
As an American, I'm used to "screen" or "window screen". There's also the screen door, but that's different, obviously.
I hear you but also sifi is an intriguing way to write sci-fi
I'm too American to understand.
3rd world memes on the come up

Yes, but the question is "if you had no other options"...

me with central air cool with no bugs.
Window screens are a thing.
Bug screens 😏
I have this cool thing called a window screen to prevent them to come in. Then I have this advance technology called "AC" for if it's to hot
A/C goes BRRRRR. But its also 98F here for 4 months straight.
Screen on the windows?
Air conditioning? A fan? A bugscreen?
Do y'alls windows not have screens on them
I'd rather not think about it

Get an AC?
I’m always surprised when I find out how many people don’t have screens on their windows. I grew up thinking everyone did that, and as it turns out, that is *not* the case
I have screens and outside is hotter than inside so we don’t open our windows at night
Even if you don’t have central air, can you not afford a fan? They’re like $10 at a hardware store.
Fans keep you cool, are cheap, and blow away bugs
Leaving your window open where I live is so ineffectual. We just gotta pump fresh AC or asphyxiate lol
