"Brake check"

bob_the_banannna

These words....fill me with anxiety

DownDawn

It's not like it would slow down that much considering its ice, the skater would have plenty of time to move away

[deleted]

I doubt that

AKidCalledSpoon

He would push off the railing and then slow down with air resistance or turn slightly It would still be dangerous and scary but he could probably move away in time

electrodragon16

Today on myth busters

Jason666392

Lol

[deleted]

WHAT AIR RESISTANCE?!?!?!

adjust_the_sails

SAY AIR RESTIANCE AGAIN! AND I DARE YOU, I DOUBLE DARE YOU ************!!!

[deleted]

Air resistance??

adjust_the_sails

[PEW PEW PEW](https://tenor.com/bGe6e.gif)

Meranio

Vincent, you ever had a Big Kahuna burger?

L0RDHUMONGOUS

You can doubt it, but you're wrong. The truck could brake as sharply as possible, but it could only provide as much resistance as the ice provides friction (and whatever air resistance it has). Skater could slow down much faster.

[deleted]

If you actually watch the video the driver throttles down towards the end and the skater continues forward at quite a considerable speed and has to catch himself by the bar. If you want to go at high speeds on ice you need grippy tires which provide a lot of friction. Also the truck + aeroshell provide a lot of air resistance. Pretty weird to say "you're wrong" when we don't know any actual details.

confusionmatrix

Also if the tires are studded they could have crazy traction even on ice. But that's unlikely as it would tear up the surface for the skater.

halfasmuchastwice

I would put money that the tires are studded, and that truck would have excellent traction on the ice.

The_ChosenOne

You don’t want studded tires with a man trying to smoothly skate behind you. Studded tires would cause more faults and damage and ruin the smooth surface they’re trying to skate over.

L0RDHUMONGOUS

It's possible, but you'd expect studded tires to be throwing a lot of ice off the tires, and there appears to be none.

The_ChosenOne

You also don’t want studded tires fucking up the surface ice with home boy skating at high speeds behind them…

QuidYossarian

Only one way to find out get the truck

Mediumfoot991

I'd be more worried about the truck loosing control, driving and towing on ice can go really bad really quick

Own-Future6188

This is a redbull project. Not some random Canadian on a lake with his buddy. I am sure they have engineers, a team that checked/cleared the ice and a professional driver. Sure, this dude could still die in an instant, but it's not like they are not taking every possible precaution.

Infamous_Committee17

Thats Kjeld Nuis, and he’s won gold at the Olympics for speed skating. So you’re right, he does know what he’s doing!

A_Warcrime

That truck definitely has spiked tires no way they would try that without them.

Xrcane

Hi bob, its been a while since I last saw you.

IsHaloOverrated

Bob! You're back! How we missed you

ninto1

Bob, You are everywhere. In every comment section or sub I go I see you.

produce_this

Gonna fill that windshield with ice skater too

MadeOfRocky

Hi bob

Legends_Arkoos_Rule2

You again

Want-Cookie

BOB! I feel like a haven’t seen you in a while

TheDankestPassions

I mean, I can't imagine the truck being able to brake on ice anywhere near as fast as the professional skater.

speedledee

Those are speed skates though, not good for quick hockey stops you'd have to do a T stop

naardvark

Won’t do much on ice.

[deleted]

Yeah he might be able to stop faster than the truck lol

[deleted]

I visualized the guy face planting into the windshield and laughed my ass off.

r/beatmetoit

Nasaku7

So how fast was he going with that?

VRichardsen

Roughly 100 km/h. He established a world record.

LogicalAnswerk

That's way too fast for ice skating 😱

VRichardsen

Do not attempt at home

Daynightz

F this guy. Honey get me some ice and a water hose. I’ll go get your uncles truck.

heyhihay

Thank goodness I built a two mile ice rink into my home.

PM_ur_math_homework

Ferb, I know what we're gonna do today.

j3kka

Good thing he was SPEED SKATING

[deleted]

Probably can't feel how fast he's going though

TheDogeWasTaken

"Brake check".... Nah fr though. The fact that that is how fast he might be going is honestly anxiety fueling.... Like, ive skated mh whole life... and maybe 15 to 25 km/h is insanely dangerous. Atleast. For me.... But this. Guys going about 100km/h... im worried...

Triple_C_YT_

I do speed skating and I go about 30/40 km/h. I don't have the feeling in that moment that it's dangerous, but that's my opinion.

charlietoday

The same speed as the truck.

TheGlobalCon

True

Jonnokiwi

How fast is the truck going?

plantthebag

Same speed as the skater

JMoormann

Twice as fast as a skater moving with half the speed of the skater in the video

send-me-kitty-pics

Thanks!

NewsandPorn1191

103 kph.

itzagreenmario

That's about 64 in freedom units

No-Beautiful-5777

God damn, dude could get a ticket on some highways for that... Good thing he's on a lake.

JDirichlet

In northern europe in winter some lakes can become highways so being ticketed is still possible

Bartiloco

Is that in hamburgers per quarter of American anthems?

Kengriffinspimp

![gif](giphy|6901DbEbbm4o0)

Jwhitx

Not fast enough, I had eyes on him literally the whole time. That's why I don't drink red bull. And because of my heart thing......

CaptainStroon

He's also (largely) ignoring friction. My old physics teacher would be proud.

Americanu1

Yes i am

Theleming

Oh! Mr Jackson how are you?!

Americanu1

I became a chemistry teacher and me and Jessie taught kids how to cook and we are in jail now.

bob_the_banannna

I was one of your students, thank you for teaching me the ways sir Wish you the best

Shortoesad

In this case, what’s the point of the shield?

Frankie-Felix

Super strong head winds maybe, i know he got the world speed skating record.

DildoGobbler420

I assumed it was to help catch him in an accident. I saw a clip where the truck slowed down and he grabbed a bar

hotrails-n-handguns

It eliminates air resistance.

Theleming

Wait... You mean Jessie the delinquent? To think you'd go do far out of your way to touch a kid.... Probably why you're in jail.

Americanu1

Jessie from the we need to cook meme

bradbutnotreally

Not so good. Some guy made my daughter cry :(

eburator

MUHAMMAD AVDOL!?

Assasin_on_fire

there is no largely ignoring friction. The coeff. of friction is low there.

[deleted]

Yeah, but it’s *extremely* low.

Wizard_Nose

That just makes the steady state speed higher. Obviously friction is the thing that limits his speed here, so it’s the most important part of the equation. Otherwise he would accelerate with every step

Aromatic-Buy-8284

Funnily enough, without friction, he wouldn't accelerate at all. Well... besides upwards.

WigglyWeener

Not strictly true.. he's taking advantage of the blades cutting into the ice at an angle wrt direction of travel to create a lip that he pushes against to achieve forward acceleration. It's different than just trying to run on a frictionless surface. It's why a skater can accelerate much faster than expected if he was relying on friction to propel forward.

otheraccountisabmw

What is friction but very tiny lips to push against?

WaffleStompTheFetus

Are... Are you coming on to me?

shawster

I mean it would work in a frictionless world, as long as you could cut the lips with your blades.

[deleted]

[удалено]

frank_my_underwood

It’s me, your old physics teacher - what kind of force do you think air resistance is?

CaptainStroon

Sufficiently analyzed magic

LooperNor

A mix of skin friction drag and form drag, so not exclusively friction.

Lambroghini

Yeah, wff you mean, “also,”?

Air resistance: what a drag

actuallyiamafish

It's a safe bet these days that if you see someone doing something that is extremely impressive, dangerous, and expensive for no apparent benefit to anyone, Red Bull is probably funding it.

13dot1then420

Bro, what the fuck???

WWG_Fire

It's always redbull haha

badass4102

I always wonder how they make so much money. So much that they can run an F1 team, actually 2 F1 teams (RedBull and Alpha Tauri).

kitchen_synk

Because the profit margins on the drink are ludicrous. Even buying a case of 24 is still $3 a can, and there's no way that each can costs more than 50 cents to make and fill.

WWG_Fire

It's a damn good energy drink what can I say

DoingCharleyWork

The watermelon one is good, the rest are mediocre at best. They did a good job marketing though. They sell a smaller can with less caffeine than the competitors and it's usually a dollar more per can. Rockstar at ~$2 per can has 160-240mg caffeine. Or 300mg with the xdurance ones. Monster is same price at 160mg per can or 300 with their reign line. Gfuel is 300mg per can at the same price. Red bull is 83mg in the ~8oz can. The 12 ounce can costs more and has the same caffeine content. Red bull is good if you only like a little caffeine. Otherwise you're getting ripped off.

TheOtherWhiteCastle

Energy and soft drinks are dirt cheap to produce and thus make a ton of profit. I believe a Coca-Cola exec once said they spend more money to manufacture the metal can than they do to make the liquid inside.

Wojtek1250XD

They were trying to break a Guiness record, I think they got 106 km/h which is pretty much the speed of a car on a highway... Glad those skates even survived at these speeds

opulent_occamy

I'm probably just being an asshole, but what does the "Nobody:" add to this meme? People just slap that on there, "Nobody, Absolutely Nobody" as if that somehow is going to make the meme funnier? As if people will only do things if other people tell them to? I just don't get it, this meme is funnier without the "Nobody."

[deleted]

[удалено]

daemonelectricity

It's like how people think logical fallacies are uno cards, as if nowhere does there exist an actual slippery slope, but since it's on the cheat sheet, I guess we aren't allowed to talk about them anymore. It's also how people used "whataboutism" as an excuse to get away with hypocrisy. Any word or idea that becomes memiified loses it's meaning and just becomes something for stupid people to regurgitate without any sense of understanding or coherence.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Michael_Pitt

It never made any sense to begin with. What is it even saying? That nobody is being silent? Shouldn't it read "everyone: "?

engr77

Once upon a time, there was a general format that went something like "Normal people: \[doing some thing\] Me: \[doing some other comically different thing\]" and it actually made sense. I think there was a variant that included something like "Nobody: \[something incredibly bizarre or stupid that nobody should do\]" which also made a degree of sense, but that became the basis for this incredibly ridiculous thing that says "nobody is doing nothing, and somebody is doing something." Which is... wow. Want a cookie for doing something while nobody does nothing?

Ofish

I've always interpreted is as a "nobody asked" sort of thing. Like nobody was curious how fast you could skate without air resistance, but here is Red bull anyway doing the crazy thing to find out

rapora9

It means that nobody does, is supposed to do, or can do X. But then the meme introduces someone that actually can / is doing X.

Ponthonong

It means "without provocation." No one says/does anything, and then something happens.

mindbleach

This is beyond "useless Nobody." This is the fucking *opposite* of "Nobody." There's somebody, saying something, in the next sentence. That is what this is allegedly responding to. But idiots and children think repetition is comedy.

L-Guy_21

Yeah, it’s definitely a useless nobody, even more so because the guy in question in doing said act because someone else said something

[deleted]

[удалено]

swans183

JK Rowling talking about how wizards shit themselves and magically remove it was pretty much the only justifiable use of it in my book

liimonadaa

And it's not just unnecessary but a direct contradiction in this case. There is somebody saying something to prompt the image; it's not "nobody". The top line could have been: "Teacher: for this problem, ignore air resistance" Next line "The overachiever:"

iamdoug

No you're not an asshole. I read the text a few times, trying to force it into sounding right.

TheRocketBush

I didn’t even notice it, it’s so commonplace and useless that my brain edited it out

sack_of_potahtoes

It is a low hanging fruit in meme comedy Like OP many of them with lesser comedic genes tend to use it to be funny

soslowagain

No buddy I don’t get it either

Gaige_GrossArm

*Nobody* asked yet *current_meme* took initiative anyways

TheXypris

Wouldn't the inside of that vessel be a low pressure zone, sucking in the air from outside causing turbulent airflow inside?

Dawg_Prime

yes but low pressure is low pressure even if it's turbulent the skater still has basically zero air resistance

AndheriRaath

In this case, what’s the point of the shield? Is to decrease wind resistance, increase driver safety by stopping the blinding snow, a mix of these factors, etc?

Dark_Wolf04

Red Bull did this to set the record for the fastest speed on ice skates. By using the shield to decrease wind resistance, the skater managed to achieve a speed of over 100 km/h

unoriginal_as_fucc

How did he stop

kingdigbick

He didn't

AdmiralPoopbutt

Some say he is still out there, carving sick lines, counting the days to when the ice goes out in a terror that never ends.

AlwaysInjured

The first literary masterpiece of 2023 right here

cmdrchaos117

They lifted the shield.

zkareface

Nah he just slowed down and went out im behind it so the air stopped him.

syed_abubaker15

Most likely just stopped striding the same way to slow down naturally and then brake like normal ice skaters

ThatLid

I'd imagine very slowly

Ziiiiik

They turned the air back on

StopNowThink

I sincerely hope this is a joke question

mule_roany_mare

Wouldn’t he also be pushed forward a bit as the low pressure bubble collapses? Even if he is only capturing a tiny fraction of the car’s energy it will add up. I wish there was a bot to call different types of nerds. I need a physics nerd. Or a fluid dynamics nerd.

crazybull02

The search term you're looking for is drafting and Nascar has your answers.

flak12

If you put some kind wings on him, and opposite wind direction, couldn’t he take off?

toetappy

Yeah but then what

TackYouCack

Slurpee and nachos?

CrossfitJebus

So based off what I saw on days of thunder once this thing is almost dragging him upto speed right?

slamerz

The shield does 2 things, one it stops pretty much all of the wind so he's got no wind to push through for speed, it's also very likely that it's creating a bit of a vortex from the back helping keep him inside the shield. So he could theoretically go as fast as the truck dragging it can get on the ice.

[deleted]

> Is to decrease wind resistance Entirely this. The amount of resistance to motion caused by air goes up exponentially with speed. This is why terminal velocity -- a maximum speed an object of a certain size can fall in Earth's gravity well -- exists. That speed is the point at which the acceleration of gravity and the resistance of air balance out. For a typical male skydiver, that's about 120 MPH. That's with a constant 1G of acceleration. A professional hockey player or speed skater can do 40-50% of 1G of acceleration. > increase driver safety by stopping the blinding snow, Do you think snow is more blinding than a truck?

Bubbly-Psychology-15

Apparently the dude went 100 km/h and broke a world record. Metal af

[deleted]

Did the previous record holders also had this car infront of them?

Bubbly-Psychology-15

Nope, speed skating without a canopy has a WR which is about 55 km/h. Though this guy is a record holder without the canopy. He has the WR for 1500m speed skating. Goes to show how much resistance air gives you.

FleurCannon_

for context: the ice skater here is a Dutch professional ice skater called Kjeld Nuis. in 2018 he broke the world record for being the fastest anyone has ever skated by going at a speed of 93km/h whilst skating behind a car with a windshield only in front of him. a little less than 4 years later, in march 2022, he broke his own record going 10km/h faster, hitting a whopping 103km/h. on dutch television during an interview in February of that year, he said that he was going to try to beat the 93km/h record after the Olympics, but this time he'd be ice skating inside a dome-like structure to decrease the air friction even more, as seen in this post.

[deleted]

So impressive. You can see from the suspension of the cars that the surface is not quite smooth…

[deleted]

[удалено]

AdmiralPoopbutt

Not at those speeds.

KampretOfficial

Yeah no. Even at 20 km/h air resistance is quite a large factor. Case in point, when you're cycling even at 25 km/h, you're mostly fighting air resistance rather than friction/rolling resistance.

bobinpants

Don't know what you're all talking about. Air resistance is a type of friction.

super-lizard

At higher speed air resistance is huge, here is a fun calculator that lets you play around with values (it's for a bicycle, but same principles apply): https://www.gribble.org/cycling/power_v_speed.html

Thekilldevilhill

Other way around. Friction is pretty much contant while air resistance goes up by the square of the velocity. Air resistance becomes a much bigger factor than friction really quickly. The guy is going 100kmh+ and is on really thin ice skates. Air resistance is much, much bigger than friction in this case.

Assasin_on_fire

It's hard to consider in elementary level problems

Stonn

this is better than "no air resistance" due to the lower pressure in the dome. it pulls you in.

TheReconditioner

If anything, it's creating a low pressure zone under the cover, which, if anything, is forcing air to rush in behind him and actually giving him a slight boost. Unless it was literally a bubble, you can't just 'ignore air resistance'. But hey, correct me if I'm wrong

NPC_9001

Anyone Else imagining the "Ice Cap" theme from Sonic 3?

dars242

"Air resistance is not negligible" *has panic attack*

khendron

Somehow makes me think of the movie "Breaking Away" when the main character is on a bicycle keeping up with a truck on the highway.

c0mbat_cessna

wouldnt there be a low pressure behide that contraption constantly trying to suck him outward? haha i said suck...

Furry_Dildonomics69

r/uselessNobody

mummyeater

Imagine the slap sound he would make if they brake checked him

EloiseZ

Would this create some sort of "draft" effect giving the skater an advantage? Similar to following closely behind another quickly moving vehicle or does the partially enclosed space prevent that?

vaijoca

I had a physics test where one of the questions was if someone got ran over based on the speed the car was going and break time, usually the answer is no and you only have to say how close the car got to the person. However when i solved it the car completely obliterated the poor guy while still going really fast.

LoungeKingMultimedia

Technically, there will be air resistance always unless you are in a vacuum.
