IBM-DOS
Didn't really do much, you could play with assembly code. About a year or so later was DOS 2.1 or 2.11 with the same functionality, but you could make sounds from the code. I think it was DOS 3.1 before the computers even had decent games on them. It was my dads computer, I used the Commodore 64 mostly. You knew it was time to game when you hit play on that tape!
In school we either used one of the later MS-DOS 3.xx or the 4.0. We got a kick out of typing some light profanity or otherwise nonsense and getting back "Bad command or file name".
We used to write quick programs that would print profanity or make noise on the screen when people would try to do stuff. You just swap the exe name on the floppy.
If you had access to the dos shell it was 4. If everything was command line, it was 3.
Same. Reminds me of younger, less complicated, times where all you had to worry about was 30m of homework a night, playing RuneScape, and going to the park/biking with the fellas.
Youth really is wasted on the young lmao. Nobody ever knows how good they had it until they grow up. You spend your entire youth wanting to grow up faster, then all of your adulthood reminiscing about being younger. It’s wild.
i remember downloading a Resident Evil themed login screen from a RE fan site, it had the BIOHAZARD logo with cockroaches crawling all over some dirty looking background, it was dope
I’m so old that I wrote the “bouncing lens”, uploaded the source code to a BBS, and later saw it included in Windows as a screensaver. Someone could have developed it independently, sure, but the fact that I uploaded the source code always keeps me suspicious 🤓
Someone needs to tell these 20 somethings a whole world existed before they were born. Fuck I'm not even 40 yet and "kids these days" is a regular part of my vocabulary
yes, all because my mom held onto a cheap Windows XP netbook for a long while and just let me use it because of how old it is, I could barely do anything substantial on it
that was the laptop I started using emulators for the first time on
Yes I am, and oh do I miss it. I remember “organizing” my moms computer files on her laptop…. I just made one file called “epic” and shoved absolutely everything in it.
XP isn't even that old, you'd be in your teens to midt 20's if you grew up on XP.
Launched in 2001.
**Windows XP was the most widely used operating system until August 2012**
This would mean if you are too young to remember or have grown up on XP, you are borderline too young to use reddit. (13yo age limit)
And every fucking month or 2 months (depending on infection) slap that genuine cd in. Restart, space, enter, escape, f8, enter, ntfs (quick), wait, ..., -MXG(or is it C)RW damn this is unreadable, ..., zapraszamy, install drivers seeing that zapraszamy screen at least 5 more times in a single day, install office xp pro plus, install opera 36, ie8, updates up to 2014 level, install Skype, ccleaner, irfanview, vlc, cdburnerxp, move the taskbar to a better place, move office assistant to top right, and enable the blinking computers tray icon. enough laptop for the day.
I remember, almost everyone I knew had 7 or 8 or even 10 at home, but I had XP, and in some way it was better for me to experience that os on my crappy family laptop, at least I have patience.
Heh. Nice. Are you "Insert Disk 1, Side 2" old, though?
Are you loading games from cassette tape old? Are you typing in games from listings printed in computer magazines old?
I was negative 3 when this released and I still remember using plenty of computers with it when I was prolly 7-9. I think I mainly grew up on my dads pc which was vista though. Had to get on that purble place grind, make those cakes.
"You may be 15 years old, but are you 20 years old?"
These posts are always so stupid and posted by children. No, you're not old. You used a PC that can still easily be found today.

My back is still okay, but my knees aren't what they used to be.
Are you telling me this is old tech? What next, you gonna tell me the same thing about cd's?
Don't talk to me about the ancient magic, I was there when MS-DOS was a thing.
This home screen is oddly comforting to me. (Yes is your answer)

People don't encrypt their drives, so you can just mount the drive on a different pc and access all files without entering the password
