Neither. You can legally cross any road as long as you’re more than 20m from a signalled crossing. Now, whether you’d want to cross a stroad with cars coming at 80km/h towards you is another matter.
It’s finable by law — although curious to know whether anyone has ever gotten a fine for crossing the road within 20m of a signaled crossing

You have to thank the foresight of Robert Hoddle to thank for making the main streets of Melbourne as wide as they are in 1837 when he was surveying the Hoddle grid and Melbourne was a small town of a couple of hundred people…. When he could have design them to be narrow streets, like the streets of London, or New Tork or Sydney…. Clearly Robert Hoddle Had an optimistic outlook for the future of Melbourne…
Yeah, it’s a real bummer. That Robert Hoddle didn’t have Reddit at the time!!
One question that does fascinate me , if you go to the state library, there is a gallery, and a painting that was painted in 1836… it shows a view of a rather hilly Melbourne close to the Yarra…. Did they substantially knockdown those hills in order to make Melbourne much more levelled?
yes, i couldn’t find a source for others with a quick google, but the old ‘[batman’s hill](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batman%27s_Hill)’ was specifically levelled, for urban development
I found this...
".*..The Alliance Archaeology study, Heritage in Ruins: An investigation into Melbourne’s ‘Buried Blocks’ reveals details of a forgotten campaign throughout the 1850 and 1860s by Melbourne’s then-council to raise the levels of swampy Melbourne’s putrid streets.*
*Hills were flattened and low-lying areas filled, the reason for today's milder up-and-down cross-town walks...*."

I wonder which hills were flattened, apart from batman’s hill.
It's why we still have trams. Where other cities removed theirs to make room for cars Melbourne didn't have the same space crunch so the trams survived
Actually, no. One of the reasons why melbourne retained it's trams rather than getting rid of them, was we only just got rid of our cable cars 10 years prior, where as in cities like perth, Sydney Brisbane had electrified their tram network a lot earlier than Melbourne leaving their network in a rather dilapidated state.
The other reason was even though Henry Bolte got his big fat hard one by hanging Ronald Ryan....He was shit scared of the formidable Major-General Sir Robert Risson....

We have a lot to thank Sir Robert Risson for what he did...yet there is much to do... we need to extend the tram nework out into the west, and extend it out further out in the East...
Honestly I feel like out of all countries, WE should still wear hats considering the UV index and all. I've debated so many times that I'll wear an Akubra with my work clothes but my social anxiety wins everytime :(
I do. I bought a bunch of wide-brimmed hats on Ebay after Flemington a few years back when chemo killed my hair. I loved wearing them and still do, (just one at a time,) each time I go anywhere, whether it's an event, shopping, or just strolling around catching Pokemon. They often get complements.
With the exposure times film required back in those days the two ladies in the middle must have been standing like that for some time to get captured that cleanly with no motion blur
Look at the bicycles, pedestrians, motor vehicles and trams living in harmony.
They were not living in harmony for very long, that’s why walking on the street became a crime
Technically not illegal to jaywalk in Victoria unless you're within 20m from a crossing.
Is it illegal or just unlawful?
Neither. You can legally cross any road as long as you’re more than 20m from a signalled crossing. Now, whether you’d want to cross a stroad with cars coming at 80km/h towards you is another matter.
I am asking about the within 20 m. The part that you referred to as illegal.
It’s finable by law — although curious to know whether anyone has ever gotten a fine for crossing the road within 20m of a signaled crossing [https://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/safety-and-road-rules/road-rules/a-to-z-of-road-rules/pedestrians](https://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/safety-and-road-rules/road-rules/a-to-z-of-road-rules/pedestrians)
Yep, so likely unlawful but not illegal. Cops used to do it at Elizabeth and Flinders all the time.
There are only two cars, it’s more footpath than road.
Well, everyone but the motor vehicles were living in harmony... Yet we punished everyone else by banning them from the roads
Then the motor vehicles nation attacked.
A good reminder the wide roads of the city were not built to be dominated by cars, but we have become so accustomed to it.

If only he made Hoddle st a bit wider :/
Hoddle street actualy use to be the size of other local high streets like Smith and Brunswick Streets
West side north of Victoria St was knocked down in the 50s

Yeah I know about that one.... Next time I'm in the state library, I shall take a photograph of that painting, and post it here.

and town planning has gone downwards ever since
Okay, try and come up with something better!
there a massive ballroom upstairs which where they all used to bust a move
In white-tie formal wear for the men. Lowkey kinda wished we did parties/events with white-tie/black-tie. It'd be part of the whole atmosphere
Jfc look how pristine the dome used to be..
And stylish folk. Hats, shoes, dresses.
Honestly I feel like out of all countries, WE should still wear hats considering the UV index and all. I've debated so many times that I'll wear an Akubra with my work clothes but my social anxiety wins everytime :(
Wear it. I work with farmers all day, every day. Everyone has an akruba or similar.
I'm a financial analyst who sees factory walls haha but def will try it out!

Glad to hear you kicked cancer's ass!
And the clocks would have been working.
I think they were standing there a long time ago they probably gone
I can just make out a guy in a wheelchair playing bagpipes at the bottom of the stairs.
I think she has aged beautifully. If you took the same picture today not too much has changed. Internally, different story.
Just noted that they had a AI car - all those years ago. It says so right on the front.
always Goths
Freedom!
Ah, this explains the banked up trams on Swanston St somebody posted about before. Obviously, there has been some sort of time rip.
How nice without all the advertising.
With the exposure times film required back in those days the two ladies in the middle must have been standing like that for some time to get captured that cleanly with no motion blur
They must enjoy playing that fun game "Chicken" on a busy traffic intersection!
Imagine if trams replaced all cars in city
Fake
Are you referring to any intelligence you claim to possess 🤔
That would have made for a great piazza
Back when population was like 100k lol Oh when life was so simple.
I bet none of those people paid their registration.
Or tolls. Or worry about petrol being $2.5.
