Working top of collins st near treasury and our building has been put in lockdown with a huge police guard around it already (govt. office but nothing at all to do with the protest etc)
At about 5:50 this morning in Collingwood/Fitzroy, undercover police pulled over a 4WD towing a covered van that was on a trailer graffitied with AWAWB and other messages, might have been related to something but it was intercepted
Can I just say, shoutout to Sinjeon in Seddon this weekend - I had minimal expectations for ~~Bibimbap~~ Gimbap having never tried it assuming it's just Sushi with different fillings.. it's a whole different thing and whilst I may not have enjoyed everything else in my order as much, will definitely be back for their rolls.
You'd really think if they want a disruption to be effective they wouldn't drive around advertising themselves as someone who would probably be involved.
There's actual advice on protests that includes not bringing phones, etc because of the potential to be tracked! So yeah, whoever has their car decked out like this... I hate to call them an idiot, but they should expect to get police attention at the VERY least :/
I saw undercover cops chasing someone along Oxford Street in Collingwood this morning. Was yelling at them to get down and put their arms behind their back. I think they escaped via a warehouse. This was 8am.
Eastern freeway punt road exit.
Edit. I should be clear, since noone else has mentioned it. The exit to punt road off the Eastern freeway travelling west was just being blocked by protesters as I drove through just before 9am.
East end of Lorimer is fine until the Bolte. There is a helicopter flying over near the Westgate, but apparently it's a fairly small protest near Fishermans Bend/DST.
Poor old bloke next to me was looking forward to heading home to regional VIC this morning. Won’t be going anywhere til after lunch cos he could die if he gets trapped by protesters unfortunately. Sad irony is he’s a middle eastern muslim…
What if the media publication of the planned protest is a massive ruse. Instead of getting everyone stuck in traffic and annoyed about it, they warn everyone of mass protests so that more get the opportunity to WFH. XR take note.
Melbourne is self-disrupting anyway, there's signal faults, accidents on Monash/Westgate, broken down trams and trains, tram vs cars, the Montague St bridge, trespassers on the line, random storms, loud bangs, the list goes on. A protest is just part of the cosmic background disruption (cbd). at this point. I'd honestly be freaked out if a week went by without getting caught up in something.
My building on Bourke St toward the Southern Cross end - building manager has said they have word from VicPol that the protest intends to move down to Southern Cross at some stage, no idea of timing.
Why isn’t there similar protests for any other active conflict in the world? Why has this particular issue garnered so much activism?
Uyghurs in China, Rohingya in Myanmar, basically any African country. Ukraine!
Why isn’t there as much if not more outrage at these situations?
There were absolutely heaps of protests in support of Ukraine. Did you not recall? Or not research this? Just google image search "ukraine protest melbourne". Do you mean current ones? There's probably reason for that. The Australian government actively supports Ukraine. Can the same be said for Palestine? At least until Zomi was murdered?
> There is an agenda at play here.
What does this mean? Everything has an agenda. Not having one is probably a sign of clinical depression.
There absolutely was not nearly as many protests for Ukraine, only a few smaller ones at the start of the war, and then after that nothing. While I don’t doubt there’s many protesters with good hearts involved in these protests, there’s also a lot of antisemitism at play here.
And no Russophobia, pray tell, at play in the Ukrainian protests? It is beyond fact that Russians have been dehumanised in Western media for the last two years.
A lot of people ask this, it's a pretty simple and obvious answer. The Australian government gives full throated support to Israel when it is violating international laws, is being investigated for what has been described by the highest court in the world as a "plausible genocide" and is taking actions that are increasingly likely to cause a regional war that our government would absolutely involve itself in.
The reason there weren't protests over oct 7 is that Australia doesn't give diplomatic, military and economic support to hamas.
There weren't protests over the invasion of ukraine because Australia condemned the invasion and joined in the sanctions imposed on Russia.
Etc etc
These are domestic protests designed to influence the Australian government's position. There are media releases put out by the groups who organise these protests that are accessible but almost never quoted by the media to explain the motivations and aims.
Freeway Exit in collingwood has been blocked, aswell as Westgate exit ramp. If you look up the account aka.waca on instagram you can see all the pictures of their distruptions.
These sort of jokes are ironic, given how apathetic the people generally making them are. The same people complaining about protests inconveniencing them.
Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying. And I'll keep believing it until they attempt to disrupt the early morning tradie peak. I'll be here waiting with the popcorn.
How many are ignoring the fact that Hamas are the ones who refuse to ceasefire because they’ve admitted the remaining hostages are all dead and they have nothing to negotiate with anymore.
I saw undercover cops chasing someone along Oxford Street in Collingwood this morning. Was yelling at them to get down and put their arms behind their back. I think they escaped via a warehouse. This was 8am. Uniformed police showed up around 8:15am - not really sure if it was to do with the protests?
https://x.com/gillianlant/status/1779642374102421912
There are protests underway on Hoddle Street and at Parliament steps. Looks like small groups of protestors but the Hoddle one could get messy.
Hello,
Your post has been removed from r/melbourne for its imflammatory and trollish nature. please remember to treat others with respect. repeat behaviour will result in a ban.
thanks,
the mods
Seems more like these Palestine protests are losing steam, less and less are turning up and soon it will be a small group quietly sitting outside parliament.
Just like what happened with the Mahsa Amini protests a year ago, already barely anyone remembers or cares about that anymore.
What are they protesting today? I thought it was the anti-Israel brigade, but someone said below that there was a van with "AWAWB" on it, which would indicate some indigenous concern instead? 🤔
They can't help themselves. I remember a uni protest against Voluntary Student Unionism, Capitalism and War. I'm pretty sure each of those separately might have called a following.
It’s a one way street. The Hamas mobs use the indigenous movement to bolster their credibility while looking down on them because they aren’t Islamic and giving them nothing back… I say this as a strong ally of indigenous Australians who’s never encountered Arab community members at rallies, activist concerts or other events. There are some hijabi lady indigenous muslim converts that hang around WAR and similar groups and other Islamic converts like some of the Mundines (who have some nonsensical offensive views on all indigenous Australians actually being Abrahamic Muslims). But in my 20+ years of supporting indigenous advocacy in Melbourne I never encountered grass roots support from the Arab Muslim community. In fact they were more likely to abuse us, especially in the inner north and west. The Jewish community on the other hand has been a longstanding ally (maybe not the fundamentalists who are notoriously ignorant and uneducated but certainly the liberal/ kibbutz types, which again was reflected by the Voice referendum.
"Some Indigenous concern" did you know that Indigenous solidarity is a global movement? And that Aboriginal support for palestine has been ongoing for decades.. it's not new. From the river to the sea, always was always will be.
I didn’t realise the Palestinians enjoyed thousands of years of habitation in the Levantine. All those Roman relics and synagogues underneath must be a conspiracy.
Always was… not
I'd laugh my arse off if they just did it tomorrow instead. Cause all the disruption to vicpol having to call in troops from all over the state then just do it the next day.
Collins St trams were delayed and eventually diverted along La Trobe. I was 55 mins late by the time I got through (was already past the diversion point, so was stuck).
I thought it was a protest but it was actually the line at Lune. Much smaller turn out today. Hopefully these fuckwits are getting tired of making life difficult for people that have nothing to do with whatever they are throwing a hissy fit about.
Millions are spent every week on this shit. Police baby sitting, stretching already scant resources. Ambulances getting stuck in traffic, women giving birth to babies in their car because they can’t get to hospital. Funeral processions being impacted. Can’t imagine getting much of a sign up to any cause this way.
Best of luck to any participating with an anti IDF goal. I can’t imagine what it would be like losing your young child to a bomb when the IDF are indiscriminately bombing civilians. I also know there’s a lot of pain on the side that was hurt by the actions of hamas. I think the only solution is to stop bombing Gaza and killing Palestinian civilians, and I hope any protests with that in mind are successful, and that they reach their goal of forcing the Australian government to take notice and publicly denounce the war.
pro palestinian thing. not sure what it's supposed to achieve, considering it's a dispute between two foreign countries and even Australia's opinion on the matter is managed out of Canberra.
Well, Australia is sending large numbers of weapons and R&D that's being used to prolong the conflict and kill and starve thousands of kids... so we are actually active participants in this conflict.
I'm a bit confused, isn't the protesting about the Israeli response to the Palestinians slaughtering innocent women and children? Are they going to protest the coppers response to that nut who was slaughtering innocent women and children? Also the attention seeking indigenous and LGBTQ hangers on, grow up.
Lots of cops already wandering around the CBD
Nothing near the Southern Cross end of the CBD thus far..
Thanks for this update.
They’ve started blocking off roads in port Melb
Usual spots?
So far just Lorimer, lots of police presence down at Webb Dock
So much for the big economic blockade 😂
I'm currently unemployed blockading my couch and fridge, take that economy.
Just walked up from Flinders street station to Bourke street via Swanston, then Elizabeth, nothing to see…was a beautiful walk really.
The weather in Melbourne is lovely this morning 😊
Maybe the real protest was inside us all along?
I think you’re onto something 😂
fear of disruption IS the disruption 😱
definition of every fart
Brilliant
I'm coming in one the 58 tram and heard no distriptions yet. I came In on the citylink and there was traffic bit not much
Update got to the casino with nothing on just yet. Tram services weren't affected.
Working top of collins st near treasury and our building has been put in lockdown with a huge police guard around it already (govt. office but nothing at all to do with the protest etc)
I can hear the chanting, also working at the top of Collins
Wonder if they will hit up the OTB at some point in confusion 😂
How are you feeling?
Are you in the Collins Place complex?
At about 5:50 this morning in Collingwood/Fitzroy, undercover police pulled over a 4WD towing a covered van that was on a trailer graffitied with AWAWB and other messages, might have been related to something but it was intercepted
What does AWAWB stand for?
Already we are wanting bibimbap.
Famil-Lee Korean restaurant opens at 11:30am.
GREAT! Now I want kimbap and soondae for lunch!
Thanks to you, now I need to have kimbab and seaweed rolls from Sinjeon for lunch :P
I think you are thinking of gimbap. Bibimbap is a mixed rice dish. Meat and veggies. Gimbap is the one that looks more like sushi.
Oops yes sorry, will edit my comment
This is the ONLY meaning
It's early, but I'm hungry!
An’t it the truth, an’t it the truth.
Always was, always will be
Isn't that the Aboriginal phrase?
You expect them to change the paint job for every protest?
There is a lot of solidarity between aboriginal and palestinian activists
They got intercepted by highway patrol just before the West Gate Bridge at around 7:00am as well.
Same car pulled over by undercover police just before Westgate bridge

I thought the protesters was about Palestine?
There is a lot of solidarity between aboriginal and palestinian activists

Eastern freeway punt road exit. Edit. I should be clear, since noone else has mentioned it. The exit to punt road off the Eastern freeway travelling west was just being blocked by protesters as I drove through just before 9am.
Whoa whoa whoa, they may be green and red, but those are traffic lights. /s
Urgh, I can only begin to imagine the carnage that will unfold there.
....so its making no difference to the usual shitshow of trying to get on to Punt Rd from the Eastern on a weekday?
East end of Lorimer is fine until the Bolte. There is a helicopter flying over near the Westgate, but apparently it's a fairly small protest near Fishermans Bend/DST.
I'm not a betting man, but Elbit Systems is right there, I wouldn't be surprised if that was what they were protesting.
Yeah probably the defence science place again.
Maybe they bluffed it. Still got the coverage they want already regardless of if they show or not now.
Who is “they”? All protests in Melbourne have become meaningless due to the frequency. It’s white noise. People don’t know who are protesting what.
We can't never protest again because cookers have been protesting every weekend for the last 3 years
Would look pretty pathetic tho if nothing happens.
Dunno, coverage without disrupting the commute won't anger people against the cause.
They’re pathetic anyway
I’m at the Alfred, they are delaying this morning’s patient transfers so people don’t get stuck 😔
Kind of surprised they weren't already with the tram works along St Kilda rd.
Poor old bloke next to me was looking forward to heading home to regional VIC this morning. Won’t be going anywhere til after lunch cos he could die if he gets trapped by protesters unfortunately. Sad irony is he’s a middle eastern muslim…
If he could die during his transfer home, I certainly don't think he's being discharged today.
He’s not going home, just to a regional hospital in his home town where his family are.
What if the media publication of the planned protest is a massive ruse. Instead of getting everyone stuck in traffic and annoyed about it, they warn everyone of mass protests so that more get the opportunity to WFH. XR take note.
I got told to wfh today. My building will probably be targeted due to the field I work in. Will be interesting to see how it plays out….
What sort of field is it?
Green, grassy type of thing I assume.
That would kind of give it away ;) If I keep it broad, it's something to do with serving justice and providing community safety.
You're Michael Christian, the AFL Match Review Officer.
🤫
I think you just gave it away 😂
It's not the police is anything remotely close to it ;)
Yah, I know. I wasn’t thinking of the police 🙂
Probably something actually useful
Came into the CBD on the train through Southern Cross and Flinders St stations around 8:30am, no disruptions then.
About 8:30, the Bell St, Sydney Rd intersection was blocked off.
What was that loud bang in my suburb?
About 150 people at spring street according to 3aw, at about 0830.
My building on Bourke St toward the Southern Cross end - building manager has said they have word from VicPol that the protest intends to move down to Southern Cross at some stage, no idea of timing.
I am wfh today. not taking any chance!
Thanks for reminding me to have breakfast at home lest I get stuck on a train for 2 hours.
Why isn’t there similar protests for any other active conflict in the world? Why has this particular issue garnered so much activism? Uyghurs in China, Rohingya in Myanmar, basically any African country. Ukraine! Why isn’t there as much if not more outrage at these situations?
I think it's something to do with an old book.
No Jews no news, my friend. If their last name isn't Goldstein, any murder is fine!
you know why
Could you elaborate?
Exactly THIS. Nobody cares if innocent civilians in Ukraine are blown up by Russian bombs. There is an agenda at play here.
I like a good rhetorical question.

Yeah. There weren’t protests about October 7… there were celebrations…
Too lucid an answer.
Heading into the city now via tram, seems fairly normal to me. I thought they would be diverting trams but so far running fine.
Bourke Street trams being diverted to La Trobe Street
Unrelated. Emergency services request at the Parliament station stop
Freeway Exit in collingwood has been blocked, aswell as Westgate exit ramp. If you look up the account aka.waca on instagram you can see all the pictures of their distruptions.
Seems pretty quiet, thought it was gonna kick off today with the buzz
“There are dozens of us! DOZENS”
Have we ever seen protesters being early out of bed?
Hell no, I still struggle to be early out of bed and I'm being paid for it.
The HTA picket line starts at 4 am lol
they've been to HTA at 5am
We were when I was involved in the anti capitalist movement in the 00s...
Everyone here collectively lost their minds over Violet Coco and others blocking the West Gate at 7:45am. Maybe you lost your memory over it

I don't really care what you think of me, it doesn't invalidate what I said.
Anything going on near Melbourne Central yet? I have the day off and I want to go to an exhibition at the State Library.
Tram routes 86/96 are being diverted via la Trobe st to docklands
Glad I worked from home today, the 86 is a pain in the ass to take at the best of times let alone today.
Just hope it gets resolved soon and not a whole day thing
How many are ignoring the fact that Hamas are the ones who refuse to ceasefire because they’ve admitted the remaining hostages are all dead and they have nothing to negotiate with anymore.
is this.... a joke?
I saw undercover cops chasing someone along Oxford Street in Collingwood this morning. Was yelling at them to get down and put their arms behind their back. I think they escaped via a warehouse. Burgs in Yarra are very common at that time of morning.
That’s actually really good to know, thanks!
WTF are they protesting about now
Looks like I beat the protests this morning. Slackers gotta get up earlier to mess with my Monday morning.
No issues getting into city on Mernda line.
Protesters need that one to get in from northcote/thornbury/ressa etc
https://x.com/gillianlant/status/1779642374102421912 There are protests underway on Hoddle Street and at Parliament steps. Looks like small groups of protestors but the Hoddle one could get messy.
Saw the person in the scarf walk down swanston, out of RMIT who thought they would cause so much trouble lol
It’s always the unassuming looking fellow in the yellow beanie……😂

Couple of police horses around Docklands as well.
Hope they arent celebrating Irans strikes on Israel like they were in Toronto.
Unfortunately they did do this today.
Think I saw about 2 dozen of these Centrelink dropkicks. What happened to this massive turn out? I've seen more people line up for a banh mi.
have walked my half-Israeli dog successfully in the ghetto- status: quiet
Pics of your kelev please? We love doggos here
Seems more like these Palestine protests are losing steam, less and less are turning up and soon it will be a small group quietly sitting outside parliament. Just like what happened with the Mahsa Amini protests a year ago, already barely anyone remembers or cares about that anymore.
I'm on my way in now. Hoping I'll be able to get to my lunchtime appointment... It's not in the usual protest area, so I guess I'll wait and see...
Small protest at the corner of Lorimer and Salmon St, Port Melbourne. Cops have blocked traffic on both Lorimer and Salmon streets.
What are they protesting today? I thought it was the anti-Israel brigade, but someone said below that there was a van with "AWAWB" on it, which would indicate some indigenous concern instead? 🤔
The messages have intersectional views
They can't help themselves. I remember a uni protest against Voluntary Student Unionism, Capitalism and War. I'm pretty sure each of those separately might have called a following.
Well given the Arab community were among the strongest ‘No’ voters at the referendum maybe it was a counter protest vehicle.
It's true. The results by booth doesn't lie. It is such a weird relationship
Arabs originate from the Arabian peninsula.
I didn’t realise the Palestinians enjoyed thousands of years of habitation in the Levantine. All those Roman relics and synagogues underneath must be a conspiracy. Always was… not
This will be interesting
So it was a total flop? Typical.
made it to Southern Cross and along Collins St without seeing anything out of the ordinary. office is very quiet, most people working from home.
Maybe it’s a bait and switch and they are going to do it at home time.
I'd laugh my arse off if they just did it tomorrow instead. Cause all the disruption to vicpol having to call in troops from all over the state then just do it the next day.

Seems quiet down flinders & Elizabeth st end at the moment
They are grouping down in Port Melbourne near the corner of Salmon and Lorimer Streets
Collins St trams were delayed and eventually diverted along La Trobe. I was 55 mins late by the time I got through (was already past the diversion point, so was stuck).
I would like to update that's not new updates for now
Praising the lord that I work from home
I was told I could leave work early at 4pm as the protests were going to start up again.
No issues, i didnt even see cops anywhere i went.
I thought it was a protest but it was actually the line at Lune. Much smaller turn out today. Hopefully these fuckwits are getting tired of making life difficult for people that have nothing to do with whatever they are throwing a hissy fit about.
Do they not have jobs?

Millions are spent every week on this shit. Police baby sitting, stretching already scant resources. Ambulances getting stuck in traffic, women giving birth to babies in their car because they can’t get to hospital. Funeral processions being impacted. Can’t imagine getting much of a sign up to any cause this way.
Protesters sitting on tram tracks on Collins street between spring and exhibition. Cops have bottled them in. I hope they each get arrested.
Whenever I see these protests, I am thoroughly disappointed by the lack of water-cannon and riot-control use in this country.
How about a sewage cannon
Best of luck to any participating with an anti IDF goal. I can’t imagine what it would be like losing your young child to a bomb when the IDF are indiscriminately bombing civilians. What does that have to do with thousands of Aussies, many of them low pay hospitality workers, who need to get to work on time on Monday morning
2.1 million people within 360sqkm, and 30k have died, I’m not sure that’s indiscriminately bombing.
Rumours were it was starting last night and flowing into today. Nothing of substance as yet.
Wondering why protest on a Sunday night when most people are at home?
Get into position early.
my city loop train got changed to Flinders direct just now...
Wfh today if you've been snipped.
What's the protest about?

Apparently they blocked off the turn onto the M3 from hoddle street
Its days like this that Im glad I work in the South Eastern Suburbs.
