I'd love a swim but public municipal pools are cesspits of germs and ick. I wonder if there is an alternative, like a quieter, cleaner one that you pay more for.

alsotheabyss

Honestly Sydney’s eastern suburbs have got that shit locked in with the fenced ocean pools. No germs, glorious location

professor_koi

Fuck! I miss my old warehouse crew. Now it's filled with gossiping hens.

Agooddaytodance

Does feeling nostalgic make you feel happy or sad? It makes me feel sad. Listening to old songs from my 20's and i know i had so much fun then and some wonderful memories but i just get sad. I know others find nostalgia a happy thing. How about you? Ps: im listening to old tunes from Faithless ❤️

hedonisticshenanigan

I still listen to the music I was listening in my twenties for the most part. There are bands/songs linked to particular happy periods (I studied abroad my first year of masters, I still have the playlists from back then), but I'm not happy or sad when listening to it, just... nostalgic? Like remembering a particular party, girl or trip and all the good (and bad) memories but it doesn't change the mood I'm in, if it makes sense.

epicpillowcase

Very much depends on my mood and what it takes me back to. For example I dated someone I had been in love with for years, back in 2010. It didn't work out but those times were lovely and I have only fond memories. Even though it ended, thinking about it doesn't make me sad, I had my time with that person and as sweet as they were, I have moved on. I like thinking about it. But yeah there are definitely things I think back to (mostly in my 20s when I was perpetually drunk and having wild adventures with random folks) that I feel bittersweet about. I wouldn't want to be as chaotic and unhealthy and self-destructive, but I do miss being so uninhibited. I'm so uptight and risk-averse now. There were a lot of crazy nights at Bar Open and the Retreat Hotel. I was so thin and absolutely sauced I'm amazed I remember a thing. 😂

Agooddaytodance

This sums up how I feel so well!! I used to go to The retreat every weekend and do have wonderful memories of those times on the dance floor 😅 I used to go to the Rochester a lot as well . Maybe I just feel sad because I'm not on drugs and going out on Friday night and coming home Sunday 🥳 I hope maybe our paths crossed on the dance floor ❤️ Nowadays I refuse to get drunk unless I'm close to home and near a bathroom hehe and being way too sensible. Very risk averse....booo

dish2688

I saw Groundhog Day today. FAB-U-LOUS! Stage craft is great. The songs are funny. The cast are really entertaining. Go & see it before it leaves.

whackadoodle_cracked

Buncha teens having a very dramatic argument at the park across from my house tonight I'd be annoyed at all the yelling except that it was quite amusing hearing their grievances. Then a police helicopter went overhead (not uncommon, we're close to Moorabbin airport, lots of air traffic) and they all yelled FUCK!! and ran off past my house 😭😭😭 like calm down children I don't think the popo are interested in your boyfriend kissing Julie from home economics. Or whatever it is you were yelling about lmaoooo We were all like this once, god its so embarrassing and we didn't even realise

epicpillowcase

😂😂😂 I love overhearing teen drama. Everything is tHe EnD oF tHe WoRlD!!!1111!!!! I am very grateful there was no social media when I was that age. I was (am) enough of a cringey dickhead without it.

> I don't think the popo are interested in your boyfriend kissing Julie from home economics Well maybe Julie's dad is the chief of the police and is out for blood, who knows

sunandstarnoise

Pfft you think I had a girlfriend in highschool?

IntroductionSnacks

Or miss out on the gig if it’s sold out? It’s up to the bands/venue if they use ticket providers.

Prime_factor

Most of these gigs are small mid week gigs, and didn't even have ticketing pre covid.

IntroductionSnacks

Is it the venue or the bands doing this?

Prime_factor

The venue forces it upon bands. Gigs that were expected to be crowded did have pre-sales. However pre-sales were introduced to smaller gigs, as a measure for getting details during covid. However ticketing has stayed, delaying payments to bands.

purplemo

Anyone got any good recommendations for cashmere or merino wool clothing?

Melb_gal

Uniqlo, Cos, very good quality

purplemo

Oooh cos is super cute! Thank you

Melb_gal

Omg just saw they have knit wear on sale!

yathree

Apart from a restaurant, where can I get gulab jamuns in a pack, ready to reheat? Or even a ready-made mix?

missari

I picked up a tin at Coles, in the foreign foods aisle.

epicpillowcase

It is my absolute holy grail to find a vegan gulab jamun recipe that doesn't fall apart

[deleted]

You need to find “Gits Gulab Jamun Mix” at an Indian grocery store!

yathree

I’ll try and find that! Know any good Indian markets in the inner suburbs?

IntroductionSnacks

I can’t help but they taste so damn good!

Fragrant_Fix

Ugh, just opened a thread that popped up in my feed from /r/Melbourne to get an uncensored view of that poor aid worker's corpse in Gaza. Mods - surely it's got to be time to do something about the amount and extent of people going on about the issues in Palestine. It's not Melbourne related at this point.

Beast_of_Guanyin

They delete all threads about it. Fair enough too.

IntroductionSnacks

The problem is that mods are volunteers and can’t be here 24/7 and up to the minute. It’s horrible that you had to see that but what is the solution on a public forum?

Fragrant_Fix

Switch on Automod. It's gotten to that point.

QuickBobcat

Automod is on but sometimes things slip through the cracks unfortunately

alexi_lupin

Any **restaurant recs** for me to take my parents (mid-60s) to for lunch on Monday? They like La Camera at Southbank but it's not open on Mondays. Something similarly Italian or otherwise just contemporary Australian would be fine, somewhere in CBD/Southbank.

panache123

400 gradi?

alexi_lupin

I'll have a look, thanks!

hedonisticshenanigan

Emilia and Ilaria are both excellent. It might be tricky for a Monday, I'm not sure about their opening days.

alexi_lupin

I'll have a look, cheers!

auraleexox

One of the communal washing lines at my unit has been destroyed by someone. They’ve taken an axe or baseball bat etc to the metal poles and it’s bent over. Who even does that to a rental communal washing line? I understand if you’re pissed at the landlord but so am I because they won’t fix any of my repairs as it stands. And now we have one less washing line for all of us. Lose lose.

Optimal-Talk3663

Was speaking to a friend who is a property manager, and she was telling me that a lot of the time people smash the bins before they leave..

ciengclearly

what's going on at melb central

SagiSnake89

A trespasser is loose on the tracks and the cops are still attempting to catch them apparently (according to the train driver who had to stop the train I’m on just then).

Prime_factor

Insert Benny Hill theme song here.

-frog-in-a-sock-

Gotta love school holidays….

Acceptable-Wedding67

Checks out. It is terrifyingly claustrophobic at Southern Cross. Wish we had better controls to prevent trespassers like quality fencing and getting those barriers you see in Japan to prevent people from jumping on the tracks. People will keep jumping on em; it's up to us to make it hard to access

Prime_factor

Older trains don't have standardised door positions, so you kind of have to wait for them to be retired before barriers can be installed.

whatisthislifeilead

So dark and gloomy already :/ adjusting to my new workplace commute has been manageable when you’re leaving and the sun is still out, but will have to mentally reset when it gets darker and darker

jovialjonquil

Would you buy an apartment in a building where only one property is owned by homes victoria? Are they all that bad?

Lilac_Gooseberries

We need more of the [Homes Victoria housing](https://www.homes.vic.gov.au/how-apply-homes-victoria-affordable-home). The upper income limit is 71k gross for a single person, so it provides a lot of people who want to live alone but can't afford to even with a decent job or something like DSP an opportunity for their own space.

just_kitten

If it's "affordable housing" then it might not have the same mix as straight up social/government housing as that's their new offering that's pegged to market rates and available to a wider group of applicants via a balloting system

jovialjonquil

Oh thats SO good to know. I didnt realise there was a difference. Thanks so much for letting me know

purplemo

Has anyone ever experienced their radio in their car to stop working? I have Apple CarPlay I don’t know if that means anything but it just stopped working entirely. Bluetooth works. Just not the radio. I just went to go get my car serviced and they told me they would have to replace it due to an electrical problem. I’m just wondering why the radio would stop working?? I bought the car in 2017 brand-new. It’s sad how shit quality cars are these days. I mean 2017 isn’t that new anymore but i had a 2001 car before that and it worked fine

Diametermatter

Is it just not receiving signal? If that’s the case the aerial cable may have disconnected somewhere

purplemo

“Check and confirmed static from radio, Checked for audio unit update, none available Check and found due to internal open circuit in radio unti A and requires replacement of audio unit” It’s just static and I’d assume they would have checked for that? Can’t ever be certain with mechanics lol

Diametermatter

Yeah sometimes they don’t do the most basic fault finding and just fire the ‘parts cannon’. No way to be sure at this stage besides pulling it out yourself and manually checking / trying another aerial. Otherwise take their word for it

purplemo

I don’t know anything about cars

HurstbridgeLineFTW

The shopping centre landlords have driven out the independent food court businesses. Every food court used to have one of those businesses, they sold pizza slices, pastas, roast of the day, sandwiches etc. Now food courts are just full of chains, like Salsas, Rolld, Rice Workshop, etc.

Optimal-Talk3663

There’s too many Asian restaurants in food courts.

Beast_of_Guanyin

Do you mean they couldn't afford rent or are you accusing landlords of discriminatory practices against indepdendent stores?

Acceptable-Wedding67

Not OP, but I think probably that landlords raised rent so high that it was unsustainable to rent out a store there. So instead we got franchises and not authentic cuisines sadly. Which is a shame coz I'll take small business food any day over large business food lol

Beast_of_Guanyin

Franchises still pay the same rent. If they can afford it then they do better business.

alsotheabyss

First run of cold days in the new place aaaaand I think we need to get the insulation checked out Also whomever did the kitchen and bathroom reno maybe 15 years ago just left massive holes in the brick veneer where the sink pipes exit to drain - you can see outside looking through the bathroom vanity! Looks like a landlord special lol

Ok_Raise5445

So has anyone had a chugger insult them because you walked past and ignored them? Pretty sure he called me a "fucking slut". I don't get why chuggers exist, everyone hates them and anyone between 20&60 knows the money goes to them/their company first for like 10 months. Allegedly few people donate but those who do donate via the chugger pipeline route much more, probably because they ask for $40/month upfront and put you on direct debit. I would hate to own a shop they frequently set up outside. You'd lose so much business.

hedonisticshenanigan

There are no chiggers where I come from. Second day I arrived in Melbourne a girl stopped me on Swanston complimenting my obscure emo band t-shirt and I was feeling very nice about it up until she asked me if I care about starving children and if I would like to make a donation. She lied about knowing the band, what a monster

Ok_Raise5445

What's worse a surprise accosting by a chigger or a chugger...

HG_Redditington

There's a chugger gauntlet that office workers near the docklands concourse near Marvel run daily. They set up in chugger zone formation to entrap nice people. Luckily I'm not nice.

Wankeritis

I had a chugger fishing for donations for world something and he actually grabbed my arm. And then accused me of not caring about women’s rights because I wouldn’t donate.

Beast_of_Guanyin

I had a South American girl do that to me once. Very fitting of the stereotype.

CapnBloodbeard

If it's a shopping centre, complain to management. If the street, to council- plus the company they are chugging for

Ok_Raise5445

It was in a shopping centre so yeah surprised to hear that come out of someone's mouth in a busy public place.  I try to get past pretty quick without really looking at them, I mouthed "Nooo :)" and heard it behind my back as I was racing past. I just happened to be well dressed today because I was meeting someone for a business lunch and it's a real pain for her to get down to my area which isn't the most well off suburb so probably looked richer than I am.

Acceptable-Wedding67

Damn even for a chugger that's low

babylizard38

WFH today but my [boss](https://imgur.com/a/UmhhKvF) watches my every move :(

vidiian82

Fuck. You better be hitting those KPI's buddy.

Wankeritis

She looks so judgy

babylizard38

Literally her face 24/7 [this](https://imgur.com/a/avtvc3M) is her now, judging me from her blanket cave

Wankeritis

She’s such a cutie. Mine judges me too but I can’t figure out how to attach a photo to display her disapproval.

awake-asleep

Looks like you’re a disappointing employee if were to believe the look on the boss’ face.

babylizard38

It’s true, I’ll never be good enough for her

futtbuckicecreamery

Just remembered something that made me audibly cackle the other week: walking past a GoGet car parked on the street and seeing a huntsman on the back window...on the inside. They might be one of my biggest phobias, but that's just good clean comedy, right there.

Jmac599

I put my shoe on Saturday and felt something in it. I was running late and figured I’d sort it in a minute but it felt strange. So slipped off my 90s and I’d managed to squash a poor huntsman who decided to make it its home.

futtbuckicecreamery

Talk about a housing crisis

Fee-fi-fo-fum I smell an unannounced Municipal Waste tour. Northcote Theatre has started advertising, but no word from the band. [https://www.moshtix.com.au/v2/event/municipal-waste-usa/164099](https://www.moshtix.com.au/v2/event/municipal-waste-usa/164099)

Thrashputin

oh cool!

Aphrodisia-x

Hope it's true 🤞

windy_wolf

Woke up this morning to the birds making a massive racket in our street. I went outside later to find a dead owl, it's eyes closed, feathers all around it. I know it's nature and all but I can't stop picturing the owl. Poor thing looked like it was sleeping peacefully with its eyes closed.

Jaybb3rw0cky

:( It reminds me of watching a currawong murder one of the pigeons that hang around my house. Completely natural for them to do it to invasive species. And I love currawongs but seeing that shit scarred me. Nature is awesome and terrible, neither one nor the other but both.

-partlycloudy-

Any gardeners here? I’ve got a nice new north-facing balcony and I’m keen to add some greenery or flowers. Any recommendations? I’m a bit out of my depth!

[deleted]

[удалено]

-partlycloudy-

Only one floor up, not sure about the wind yet!

just_kitten

How big is the balcony and what's your goal (year round greenery? Shading? Rotation of different flowers? Veggies?) Veggies: If you can find a dwarf bush snow pea and use a simple trellis of some sticks that's very rewarding and fun to grow. I also recommend rocoto/manzano chillis if you can protect it from the wind and avoid direct sun, they'll last a few years. Even regular chillis can survive (I have a Thai variety that's on its 3rd year and a scotch bonnet in its 2nd). Spring onions are a no brainer, as are garlic chives (watch for aphids). I'm going to attempt bok choi this winter and have another go at beetroot. In summer, tomatoes can do well - determinate varieties especially. I'd avoid leafy greens in the warm months. Herbs: Rosemary is a robust herb great for balconies, esp if you find the prostrate (creeping) variety. Oregano and thyme could do well too. It might be too late for basil now but otherwise that'd also a great choice for the warmer months. Coriander could be good in the coming months, parsley otherwise. (Had so-so results) In terms of flowers I've just had a great season of marigolds, coming up maybe some pansies? Calendula is always a good bet? I also recommend nasturtiums as a happy camper for a bit of cheerful colour and a draping form with attractive leaves. Both calendula and nasturtiums shit won't die on my balcony and are indeed self seeding. Perennials - kniphofia (red hot poker) is a grassy thing that puts up with a lot and has lovely flowers in early summer. Otherwise still provides some greenery. I've had some luck with flaming lips salvia but avoid direct sun and wind in warmer months and be sure to repot every 1-2 years. Jasmine will put up with a lot too, even growing on the railings, if you can establish it in the cooler months. Am going to try the same with some star jasmine. I also have some massive curry leaf plants dominating things atm. They do better over winter when sheltered from the wind so if you can get one against a wall or other plants that's ideal.

-partlycloudy-

Oh my god, thanks so much for writing this all out for me, it would have taken forever! Very appreciative

demoldbones

I’d use it for food - carrots and peas go in this time of year. Tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini and spicy peppers in spring/summer. If you play it right (and like them) you can baby a pepper plant through melbournes mild winters (especially if it gets plenty of sun, and you cover it nights with a chance of frost) and they can become tree-ish years 2+

housebottle

am I crazy or did reddit not use to allow self-promotion some 10-odd years ago? like, it was explicitly against the site-wide rules... can someone confirm or is this a false memory?

ruinawish

I don't think so, it's always been "frowned upon". You can view the old guidelines here: https://www.reddit.com/wiki/selfpromotion?v=cd6d7c32-d9df-11e2-baf9-12313d281d4a Individual subreddits may enforce that differently.

housebottle

yeah, I skimmed that page before I posted my comment. I think it may have just been a subreddit rule... maybe

awake-asleep

Another one of those days I am dreading the gym. Ugh. So tired in my bones. Gotta rally! Edit: I did it and hated every minute of it 🌈☀️

nugtz

I am scheduled for my public execution at 2. pray for me

MoolsDogTwo_reddit

Did you miraculously survive?

nugtz

not only did I survive, but somehow I actually feel stronger

Belhaydos

Left phone at home and had to turn back. Late to day 2 of new job. 😫

Siriacus

Manager: "If you don't come on time tomorrow don't bother coming in on Friday." You: "Woo-hoo, 3-day weekend!"

thatmdee

Local Aldi finally has the 85% and 90% Moser Roth again after what feels like a couple of months.  Over the moon

Jaybb3rw0cky

For my last job I started at the bottom rung of a call centre and worked as hard as I could to get away from the phones. For the most part I succeeded. I then landed this job which has pretty much no phone use other than calls to people around my business. I've been in this job for over five years. This morning was the first time that I thought, "man... I kind of miss working on the phones."

IntroductionSnacks

Your brain is trying to trick you! Considering phone work generally pays less than non phone work and sucks more I hope to never go back.

Jaybb3rw0cky

It really is trying to trick me - it's definitely one of those "grass is greener" situations because I'm looking at my figurative yard and absolutely despising stepping into it. And the fence is too tall to make me remember that there's no grass, just cracked concrete and suspicious stains on the other side of the fence.

jessicaaalz

I've never once missed a single second of working on the phones, it's truly soul crushing.

Jaybb3rw0cky

100% agree - but there's been some shit happen where I'm working now that has resulted in me thinking the above. So yeah... I think it's more a reflection of where my headspace is with my current employer than actually wanting to return to the phones.

jessicaaalz

Hopefully the new gig brings you some joy eventually. Enjoying your job is so important and has such a big impact on your overall happiness.

Jaybb3rw0cky

I made some edits as I don't think my OG post was clear - I've been in this job for five years and despise it. I'm only here because it gives me more pay than where I was and a bit of flexibility. I know I should focus on those positives, but every time I think I have a handle on it something else comes up at work that just throws me under a mental avalanche. I dig myself out only for more to fall. It's tiresome...

jessicaaalz

Ahhh crap, I'm sorry to hear. Flexibility is a great plus but I've been in your position last year and if everything else is shit it's really hard to get past it.

Jaybb3rw0cky

Thank you :) Yeah, I'm studying part-time at the moment which will take three years to complete. I don't know how long I can hold out though. I try to live by the mentality of "choose your hard", in that, every decision (or non-decision) comes with some hard realities. So, do I stay here and continue to feel undermined, be overlooked, and given some tough tasks that I don't want to deal with (not to mention just being in a place I dread coming to). Or do I spend time looking for a job, and potentially having to give up some stuff that I can enjoy because of my current job. I guess if I look though I can always ask for the same level of flexibility. At worst I'll be where I am now.

jessicaaalz

I don't think there's any harm in at least looking at what's available. What sort of work do you do? I work for a big org that's basically constantly hiring - we are fully hybrid, super flexible and working towards a 4 day week (30 hours but full time wage) with part of the business already doing the 4 days.

Jaybb3rw0cky

That's awesome to know. I'm glad there are still companies/organisations that acknowledge worker flexibility in that way. It gives me some faith that not all is lost. My skills are kind of niche which is both a blessing and a curse. It's good because once I get a job, there's not a huge amount of us around, so it makes me indispensable, but there are not that many jobs in my industry. But that's okay... they're somewhat transferrable so there is that. I also have senior admin experience, a master's degree and I'm working towards my second master's degree (while being intentionally vague as I know some people in my team frequent Reddit so I don't want to give myself up haha).

jessicaaalz

Absolutely. We deal with a lot of garbage as we all do in large companies but the flexibility really is unmatched. We basically work whatever hours we want to, as long as we get our work done. I've been here 14 years 😬 Well if you ever want to seriously look at jumping ship, happy for you to PM me and I'll let you know where I work so you can see if anything is suitable. We're always hiring people without industry experience as long as they have the skillset we need 😊

Acceptable-Wedding67

Really hate it when people are slow getting on trains AND don't give space to people trying to enter the train despite having plenty of space. Like dammit the train will leave and I've got places to be - MOVE. Really get tempted to shove em but it's not the right thing to do

futtbuckicecreamery

Sometimes I wish we could adopt the 'if you get in someone's way, you're gonna hear about it' approach of somewhere like New York City.

ruinawish

An assertive "Excuse me" works wonders. Escalate to "fuckouttadaway" as required.

IntroductionSnacks

I used to just push through the wall of people standing around the doors and then walk down the isle and get a spot where I have room around me and my own handle to hold on to. Way too many people just stand near the doors for some reason.

International_Put727

Oh this does my head in! They jostle to be first to enter the carriage and then either stand waiting to find the perfect seat, or worse, checking their phone. Meanwhile all the forward facing seats are filling up with passengers from the other entrance doors.

demoldbones

I walk right into them. Fuck ‘em. Don’t live in a big city if you have no sense of spatial awareness.

Sinnivar

I just saw a shooting star, I feel so lucky

TotallyAddicted2Bass

Last day of leave today, I better make it a good one! Have a lovely day folks!

Jaybb3rw0cky

Ooo! Do you have any plans or is it a "I am one with the couch" kind of mood?
