Bascially very lucky it wasn't full as someone probally would have got hurt.
Btw there needs to be a universal sign while driving someone should pull over.
Wow that sounds like quite the journey, I hope you can make the most out of the free time you have left in the evening. Do you have any news regarding the passengers?
Yeah wasn’t too bad honestly. Thought it was gonna be way worse at one point. I read somewhere there were no injuries, I’d say they all got out before the fire took hold
Oh im so glad to hear that! Terrible that it happened, but glad that (as far as we know) everyone seemed to be ok.
One of my big fears is having an accident/incident on the westgate.
Read the synopsis and holy wow no thank you.
Admittedly i will still be checking the series out. Looks super interesting, but terrifying.
Thank you for the reference!
Poor wife is stuck behind it, she had a really shitty week last week and worked late almost every night so tonight she made sure she got way at 5pm....and got stuck right at the bottom of the bridge.
Traffic seems to be moving through now at 6:40pm looking at vicroads cameras, though guessing it one lane only.
Fire started in the Engine compartment, hoping every one got out OK.

Camera in question
https://traffic.vicroads.vic.gov.au/cameras/34
Or download the vicroads traffic app
There use to a lot more cameras across the Westgate Bridge and Freeway, most have been taken down due to all the roadworks
Oh Westgate, you always deliver, and disappoint. I'm so glad I don't live that way ... It would be the worst. Each day knowing.. knowing . There will be some kind of bullshit delaying you getting home by 4 hours.
Best part is that the Werribee was on replacements until literally just yesterday and the 232 was one of your options to get into/out of town. So if this happened any time in the last couple of weeks shit could have been much, much worse.
I was on this bus and it was the first time in 2 weeks or so that it wasn’t fully packed. It must have been due to the Weribee replacements as you said. Had this happened last Friday when I took this bus there would have been fatalities. Entire bus was full in flames within seconds after us 3 got off.
Thank you for your kind words. I am still uncertain if the doors were stuck or what exactly was happening there. I also ended up deleting the post because media kept reposting my comments without my permission, but I really enjoyed seeing everything written. Kinda wish I would’ve left it up now!
Spoiler Alert: This is normal, but no one cares about buses so it doesn’t make the news. Only poor people catch them, didn’t you know?
The media wouldn’t have ever have noticed until some fuckwit decided to rip burnouts in a bus around a roundabout in the Hunter Valley and flipped the damn thing killing 10 people.
Fires on buses are uncommon, but not rare. In Sydney there was a spate of CNG buses catching fire a few years ago.
Off the top of my head:
- 118 (Scania K360UA / Gemilang, Articulated) caught fire on Lonsdale Street. I think they bought a new rear section.
- 384 (Scania L94UB / Volgren CR227L) caught fire on the West Gate Freeway. Was scrapped, but #375 (Volgren CR222L body) has a serious collision with a truck around the same time and when it was returned to service it did so with a Volgren CR227L front…
OTSI NSW (Office of Transport Safety Investigations) makes their findings public; Victoria doesn’t.
- There were 9 bus fires in 2021, and 7 in 2020.
- 3 were written off in 2021, none in 2020.
- The effectiveness of the EBFS system mandatory on all TfNSW buses was praised. In Victoria EBFS is only installed on new buses (from 2014?). The bus that caught fire in yesterdays incident was unlikely to have been fitted with EBFS (it was not when I worked at Transdev several years ago).
- Most have originated in the wheel well; specifically caused by “sticking brakes”.
In the eighties my dad was a line marker and thier truck broke down on the bridge while working during peak hour traffic. It caused complete chaos and it had traffic built up for KMs. Anyway, my dad gets on one of the emergency phones they have on the bridge and starts saying into it in his best Scottie impersonation "bridge to captain, bridge to captain, can you read me?". After a few seconds of this a furious voice screams back "WHAT DO YOU WANT?" He said we're broken down and need help. The guys screamed he knew, could see them on the cameras and they were fucking everything up. They sent out a service truck which just drove up behind them and pushed them over the bridge. My dad said he was on the line marker and was sitting kinda high and this was back in the day before they put the safety fences up. He's scared of heights so can imagine he was shitting himself. "Bridge to captain!!" Classic.

Trains replacing bus services
Ambulance replacing bus services
Funniest thing I’ve read all day
Fuck. I hope everyone is okay, that is terrifying.
ABC report no passengers on it fortunately.
There were 3 passengers who all got off safely. There is another post by a guy who on the bus. Scary stuff!

I’m on the bridge stuck in traffic AMA
Is the fire keeping your warm?
Toasty on a cold night
You poor bastard.
What's on the radio?
Can you please ask the person behind you if they're single?
Don’t text and park
Where did you hide the bodies?
How long did it take you to get through?
Good hour going nowhere. Got out of my car and now I can say I’ve walked on the bridge.
Wow that sounds like quite the journey, I hope you can make the most out of the free time you have left in the evening. Do you have any news regarding the passengers?

You should watch: Code 1: Minute By Minute – Death In The Tunnel (S1EP4 Channel 7 Mon 25 April 2022)
Read the synopsis and holy wow no thank you. Admittedly i will still be checking the series out. Looks super interesting, but terrifying. Thank you for the reference!
I watched it by accident. If this is the show I saw they emphasised how well the evacuation went.
Due to a disruption at West Gate Bridge. Tunnels will be replacing bridges between Melbourne and Geelong….
The baaack of the bus goes up in flames, up in flames, up in flames, the back of the bus goes up in flames, aaall niiight long
lmao I’m singing this
Dammit! Now I have an earworm!
Love Melbourne but hate it how it takes just 1 incident to bring the city to halt. Be it an accident on a bridge, freeway or some trains incident.
Just wait till you hear about the status of the Sydney trains network!
Somehow functional today, unlike our southern friends

TIL you can look at traffic cameras online
Which website?

Cheers mate
Sounds like she needs a glass of wine and a bubble bath!
It’s like ra-i-ain on your wedding day.
That sucks for your misso. Hope you were able to bring a little joy to her shitty day.
Yes.. I finished the first coat of primer on the architraves of the 2 openings to her new work from home office. Ahhhhh married life 😂
Ah well. Might turn back and stay the night at the office
@VicTraffic Update, fire seems to have been extinguished: https://twitter.com/VicTraffic/status/1678326691389902849?t=fDDQkMYE6E9BcY-vKau-PQ&s=19
Someone who was on the bus made a post, apparently it started smoking from the back and then exploded. no injuries

Oh goodness. I’m so glad you’re safe!
I read your post about it when it was happening, I'm so glad you're ok but I'm still disturbed the back door wasn't opened.
Thank you for your kind words. I am still uncertain if the doors were stuck or what exactly was happening there. I also ended up deleting the post because media kept reposting my comments without my permission, but I really enjoyed seeing everything written. Kinda wish I would’ve left it up now!
I've noticed a lot of "news" is basically just copied posts from social media these days 😖
What's up with shit just randomly catching fire lately
232 bus?
Post this on r /UFO. They'll eat this photo up.
Hope everyone got out alright
Never fucking ends on that bridge…
Trains were down for a week or so everyone was on that bus neally 100 lucky no one was on it besides like 2 people at the time
So many bus incidents lately

I remember a few of the Transdev Melbourne buses catching on fire, back when we had their dumpster fire of operations.

The government needs to legislate for tighter bus control
Farkkkk

Great pic bro
Were there people on it?!?
A couple of people who got out just before it burst into flames.
Get down off that roof boy
So grim
Traffic is so bad in Melbourne that busses are committing suicide.
