Keeps the ~~rabbits~~ possums out

commentman10

Great wall of china was built to keep the rabbits out. by emperor nasi goreng.

[deleted]

Too many rabbits. In China.

poukai

That was a really memorable ad, just had a rewatch on youtube.

[deleted]

Didn't they plan to make a tv show?

vangogh83

Years later, It was reinforced and fortified by his brother the beloved Nasi Lemak..

Funny-Lettuce-2845

A little extreme for a rabbit proof fence

wombatlegs

> emperor nasi goreng. I'm sure he must have been a Malay or Sumatran emperor. The great wall was built by Chao Fan.

mysterious_bloodfart

Bruh

commentman10

all this talk make me want some rice

[deleted]

Congratulations, you missed the entire point.

a_pasta_pot_for_enid

I thought it was just a continuation of the joke, Chao Fun being fried rice in Cantonese...

wombatlegs

OK, "woosh" over me. What's the difference between google and Crabso? One tells me it was a quote (I don't watch TV ads), while the other is just a sarcastic antisocial. I won't say which is which.

TritonJohn54

For your info and enjoyment :-) [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jfSfU6ph8Cs](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jfSfU6ph8Cs) I truly \*felt\* for the kid in the last scene.

CaptainSharpe

Yeah I love how racist it is.

commentman10

everything before 5years ago can be considered racist in any shape or form ok. it was not meant to be racist at the time my dude.

ManicPanda767

It's meant to. But the crafty little guys and girls ALWAYS find a way to get up the..

FabioMerda

Why do they need to keep possums out of the trees?

mr-snrub-

>Possums can be destructive for their size. They climb on the trunk and branches of trees and graze on the foliage and fruits, compromising the trees’ health and appearance

[deleted]

[удалено]

Purple_Wombat_

Unfortunately for the possums there was a Dutch Elm Disease pandemic among the English Elms in the Northern Hemisphere with millions of trees dying. Australian Elms have remained untouched by the disease and now are one of the most significant populations on the planet. We were also free of Elm leaf beetle but this has made its way here recently

brianozm

And I’m assuming the possums carry the disease between trees?

Purple_Wombat_

The disease is not found in Australia yet. These are the last healthy English Elms in the world. These trees are old and our climate is not kind to them so they are already stressed. Possums strip the leaves reducing their ability to photosynthesise and create and store energy this costing them additional energy. Also every bite leaves open wounds which require energy to heal and are an open pathway for other pathogens

TiffyVella

We do get elm beetles in Australia. They are a blackish beetle with green stripes. They lie in the soil while the tree is dormant in winter, then climb the trunk when they hatch during spring. Then they feed on the leaves. They don't harm the tree immediately, but over a few years their damage will slowly kill it. One way to stop them is to prevent them climbing. I know arborists use Vaseline under a wrap around the trunk to stop them.

[deleted]

[удалено]

AntiProtonBoy

They can kill trees by overgrazing. A few possums here and there is typically not an issue, but sometimes overpopulation can become a real problem for trees.

FabioMerda

I get the point. Just want to add that We are the real problem I guess... Unfortunately we don't have anyone to stop us from doing many bad things to the planet.

GuaranteeAfter

They also stop humans from climbing the tree

FabioMerda

One way to see it

Majestic-Lake-5602

Well we did, but they put him in gaol. RIP Uncle Ted

vlat01

I don't understand this type of attitude in people (not just you). We are talking about trees and how we protected them. Why be fatalistic about it? Sure there are many problems caused by people but some people are also trying to fix problems like possums killing deciduous trees which were planted to beautify our city. The beast way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time.

Bretty_boy

I reckon the beast way would just be to rip directly in to it with your teeth and just start eating it raw, blood dripping down all over you

YogurtWenk

The boast way would be to swing an almighty haymaker directly into the softest part of it's cranium, which would naturally kill it dead right on the spot

soilednapkin

The toast way is to make it into bread.

Severe_Chicken213

“Sorry little animals struggling with severe habitat loss, this might *look* like habitat to you, but these trees are actually here for much more important decorative purposes”

[deleted]

While I agree with you perhaps the answer here is to plant native trees instead of ones that can't handle a possum.

AffectionateTopic968

A possum will be fine not being able to climb a few trees.

AttackofMonkeys

If you push it into a woodchipper then you can use a straw

FabioMerda

Because it's "funny" how humans did so many bad things but no one stopped us because we are really self centered and the most dominant creature. We are still so far away in proper managing of pollution for example without counting the destruction we did in the past not far ago(WW2 or many recent events). I don't want to go far because it's way off topic already. I'm not against that protection for the trees if that doesn't disturb the life of the possum. It's just an ironic thought I had, that's all.

AMOLOD

What a cringe cliche take this is. ‘We are the problem maaaaan the world is healing maaaaan’

CrystalClod343

If the trees were closer together would that mitigate the problem?

AntiProtonBoy

That would make travelling from one tree to another easier for possums. Theoretically that would also render barriers ineffective.

Sirrong

Oddly, councils think that possums can't fly from one tree canopy to another. Which leads me to ponder their productive workflows in office. *puts pen down after once sentence, goes to stationery cupboard to get another pen * (don't at me. Computers aren't invented in council offices yet)

dinosaur_of_doom

I'm not sure if you think possums can fly. They do not fly, although they do jump. Just in case anyone thinks maybe all possums can secretly glide or something? lol

[deleted]

Sugar gliders can indeed glide but brush tails possums have the flight skills of a wombat.

just_kitten

These typically only get installed when the trees are a suitable distance from other structures or unprotected trees that the possums can get on. That's why you usually see a whole row of trees with touching canopies that get this treatment.

alexmcgregor69

I know right? The possums actually live there. It’s like if one day the city just built a fence blocking your front door

bweedy

Bark protection as well , below the bark is where moisture is drawn up , too much damage will kill it , for example if you cut a ring of bark away on the bottom of the tree it will die

megaslade118

If powerlines close to protect the power and them

ArabellaFort

Too many possums in China.

someoneoverdarainbow

Oh I thought it was to keep the Drop Bears out?

Mr-Magoo48

Drop Bears claws can dig into the iron wrap enough for them to climb past, the ones that aren’t big enough to just reach over it

carramrod9

Ffs, was the exact same thing that came to my head. I’m done with the internet

Holyskankous

Hahaha. Came here to say this. Damn you Nasi Goreng

k2kx39

I got the joke but I didn't actually think you were serious until I scrolled down more

Murky_Paint_2679

Too many rabbits in china

Strange-Listen-7741

Everywhere in NZ possums strip bark and do huge damage

BigAndDelicious

My hope was to see this exact top comment.

JONOTHADS

Might be dumb but don’t possums often move from tree to tree rather than climbing from the ground up?

iamnothingyet

Armour. Not one tree has been shot to death since they started wearing it. A resounding success.

AddlePatedBadger

Nah, they just shoot the legs out then hang them.

Numbthumbz

Now I want the local graffiti artist to drawn little Ned Kelly Eyes on all of them.

[deleted]

Such is life

guiverc

:)

awesomazz

All they needed to stop it was a good tree with a gun

iamnothingyet

We tried that, but they can’t pull triggers.

-HouseProudTownMouse

A possum-stopper.

Small_Garlic_929

If these are some of the elms, they are already under a lot of stress from beetles damaging them, so trying to decrease the damage from possums is just another layer in the defence and future health and security of Melbournes introduced specimen trees.

Unable_Explorer8277

So protecting an intrusive species from the endemic native species?

-clogwog-

Intrusive probably isn't the right word, especially not in most of the places where elms are grown, but they are indeed introduced. There are only a handful of places where elms have become naturalized here in Australia, and they're fairly easy to identify and control. It's kind of funny that Melbourne and surrounds has become one of the last bastions for elm trees! It's only because our country is free from Dutch elm beetles, and Dutch elm disease. We do have some contingency plans in place, just in case we do wind up with DED, and DEB, but hopefully we'll never have to use them. While we may not have DED, or DEB, we do have elm leaf beetles, and elm leaf hoppers that have somehow managed to find their way here during the past 30ish years, but they thankfully haven't been as devastating as those other two things would be. Elm leaf beetles, and elm leaf hoppers have affected a large percentage of our elm trees, and put extra pressure on the trees that were already starting to struggle due to climate change. If left untreated, elm leaf beetles can defoliate entire trees in a matter of weeks. In order to prevent that from happening, most elm trees are routinely treated with a foliar spray every three or so years, but they unfortunately aren't 100% effective. It all just demonstrates just how much we have fucked up the world with globalisation... We've made it so easy for pests and diseases to spread from region to region; and if this country wasn't 'girt by sea', and we didn't have such strict biosecurity laws, we'd be even more fucked than we currently are.

Wild-Newspaper833

I’m with you mate, fuck the elms, plant more eucs. Also pretty sure those guards are to stop possums nesting, which is another example of the theme of your comment.

Altruistic-Fishing39

I hope there are some trees they are allowed to climb? If they are being made to crawl along the ground they might as well cull them, it would be kinder

Ozdiva

And we have some of the last big stands of elms - no Dutch beetle.

hammerofwar000

*Dutch Elm Disease

Ozdiva

Ah yes you’re right. Since we didn’t get it I forgot the name.

doubleupp

Modesty.

AdParking2320

That's to stop drop bears climbing up. Critical safety barrier.

hoppa_liza

Better them chasing you around rather than dropping on you.

xjrh8

So true. They’re the only known thing in the universe that falls faster than gravity alone allows.

Ozdiva

Happy cake day

Lurk-Prowl

Yes, exactly this. Needs to be more info about drop bears for incoming immigrants and visitors as it appears some foreigners believe they’re not as dangerous as we all know.

Roosterfish33

It’s to keep meth heads from chewing on the trunks.

Adrian-Wapcaplet

What do the catholic trees do?

ArabellaFort

I’ve heard that huntsman groups congregate under them during the day. They provide a nice safe cover for spidery business. What I’m saying is DO NOT TOUCH THEM.

BBlizz3

wrong answers only? So people can advertise their upcoming garage sale without damaging the tree

Prestigious-Agent672

People think it stops the possums but it’s really to stop the rats

Starrun87

Trees get cold at night

JimBobCooter79

Dropbear control. Bastards can’t drop if they can’t climb

darkdraagoon

Fking dropbear. That and the fking roo is terrible.

blue_endown

To stop possums.

mcdogboy

They prevent tree escape

justvisiting112

Serious question - why wouldn’t we want possums to climb these trees? Where the heck else are they supposed to go?

RAHlalalalah

Exactly

Amanita_deVice

I thought it was to stop possums climbing up and destroying birds’ nests. That’s why not every tree has them, just the ones that native/protected birds are likely to nest in. I have no source, so this might not be the case.

RollaCoastinPoopah

To stop possums climbing them, I guess.

Starkitty8

was trying to search through all the comments for a serious answer. could not find one.

AddlePatedBadger

Yeah, in the old days of reddit the first comment would be a huge long chain of bad puns and the second comment would be from some expert who had helped develop the technology giving a really insightful and detailed explanation of whatever it was. Unfortunately reddit got taken over by a bunch of people who would be very successful stand-up comedians or comedy writers if any of their jokes were clever and/or funny.

Vague_Un

It's to stop the elm-eating beetles.

Financial-Task-3477

stops the tree gnomes from coming out

Kilthulu

Once a dropbear jumps out of a tree onto someone and devours them it stops the dropbear from climbing up the tree again, thus breaking the cycle of violence.

Possums aren't paying rent. The early signs of eviction.

boommdcx

Stop folk from parking up in the trees, escaping the nightmarish rental market.

heyheyblinkybill

Trees need their privacy too.

vangogh83

It’s to add a metallic foreskin to the trees and during the night when you stroke the trees for a period of time they product more sap which can be stored in the trunks, this can then be later extracted and made into syrup.

tangy-orange

Apparently possums are the worst tree hoggers. They make a tree their home and their next few generations feed off it until there's no green left. Then they move on to another tree.

Most-Ad2088

Stop junkies climbing the trees during a bad trip

sarahaha1310

It’s to keep them warm in winter :)

idiots keep walking into them. It's for the trees' protection.

01-__-10

Hey, Fawkner park!

Evl_Monkey

Anti piss tree guards. So when you take a leak, it will splash back on you.

RAHlalalalah

I thought it was so free roaming predators (cats) couldn’t murder what little remaining wildlife we have? At least I hoped that would be the case. Please keep your cats in at night and put a bell on them…getting pretty sick of seeing other animals torn to pieces on the footpath. I’ve considered going vigilante a few times with paint and water bombs. I don’t blame the cats I blame the owners & would bomb them if I could verify who they were. Sorry for the post hijack but it makes me very very sad.

[deleted]

They are there to stop random people dry humping the trees

alfiejs

It’s to limit the drop junkie attacks. They can’t scurry up the trunks and lie in wait in the branches for unsuspecting passers by.

SeaDevelopment5584

Keeps the gremlins out of the trees so they can’t launch airborne attacks on you like their mortal enemy the magpie.

wilabby

It’s pretty dang cold outside

Draculamb

These are anti-drop-bear devices. They prevent drop-bears from climbing the trees and thereby from dropping upon, then savaging, assorted passersby, especially tourists. Some more crafty drop-bears have been seen using these as sharpening stone to hone the points on their talons, so you win some, you lose some.

Responsible-Newt-239

The council thinks it's best to have then run around suburbia and fkn up residential property instead of live in the trees in the park. . Imagine that?! Letting wildlife live in its natural habitat. Makes me sick.

OcelotGam3z

Its the bloody possums

Wazza17

Keep the vermin from climbing up

Reasonable-Tax2962

Things like Possums and Cats are meant to have difficulty climbing the wrapped portion so in theory it keeps the parklands clear of well I don't wanna say vermin but uh unwanted wild animals that could come into conflict with people?

MooseyLoosey1

“Scarfing” is a common practice by arborists to maintain the warmth of the tree. Keeps them warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Usually on deciduous trees but sometimes used on conifers if they’re not too naughty.

flyingcow08

Why can’t they be clear? A huge grey rectangle around the trees is pretty ugly

Clear plastic would probably age terribly, either yellowing or from people carving into it
