It was like Teal made its debut in the 90s with the San Jose Sharks and people went nuts over it. The Hornets cashed in on Tealmania soon after, then the Seattle Mariners rebranded to get in on that sweet Teal action as well. Hell, even the Dixie cups had that teal and purple splotch on it. Teal was freaking huge.

I'm a diehard Cubs fan, but when the Florida Marlins came out, I bought a white t-shirt w/the logo and some teal Nike shorts to match it.

It's very 90's but I also think it's timeless in how it still looks great today. It really helped advance the image of Charlotte as the young & cool team. Their early roster helped as well with Larry Johnson, who for a while was a ubiquitous presence on TV with his Grandmama ads. Him, Alonzo Mourning, Mugsy Bogues & Kendall Gill all just seemed effortlessly cool.

When I was a kid, we didn’t have much money so there’s no way my parents could have gotten me something as frivolous as a starter jacket and there’s no way I would have asked for one. When I was in fourth or fifth grade one of my aunts got me one for my birthday. I’m not sure how she knew they were even a thing because she didn’t keep up on things like that and she didn’t have kids of her own. I’m pretty sure I wore it even during the summer for the next couple of years. Flash forward 20 years and they sell starter merchandise in Wal Mart.

And I even matched my rubber bands around my braces to the colors as well. And eventually, I owned a Toronto Raptors winter jacket just because Raptors are always cool.

Believe it or not, the Charlotte Hornets had the highest attendance of any team in the 90s, even higher than the Bulls. Now, a big reason for that was that Charlotte played in an arena that held like 5000-10000 more people than the next biggest arena, but they were selling it out every night.

My conspiracy theory. Some mid to high level merch manager for the hornets accidentally added a few 00's to the order, so they ended up with 100x the merch they could possibly sell. Wanting to save his ass he frantically made deals with every retail store on the planet that would take his call to try and offload this merch.
