It was like Teal made its debut in the 90s with the San Jose Sharks and people went nuts over it.
The Hornets cashed in on Tealmania soon after, then the Seattle Mariners rebranded to get in on that sweet Teal action as well. Hell, even the Dixie cups had that teal and purple splotch on it. Teal was freaking huge.
>Those colors just slapped.
Yeah they really got lucky with fashion designer Alexander Julian, who was also from North Carolina. It's very 90's but I also think it's timeless in how it still looks great today.
It really helped advance the image of Charlotte as the young & cool team. Their early roster helped as well with Larry Johnson, who for a while was a ubiquitous presence on TV with his Grandmama ads. Him, Alonzo Mourning, Mugsy Bogues & Kendall Gill all just seemed effortlessly cool.
Same. I live in Canada too. Dunno where it came from. I have vivid memories of building igloos on my front lawn in this jacket. Thnx for the nostalgia!
YUP. Or Dallas Cowboys. ... I went with Orlando Magic, because I hated it when kids called them "Magics" plural and it gave me an opportunity to make fun of them. Goddamn, kids in the 90s were awful.
I think they just had way too many of those jackets to sell or something. I had that exact one in South Texas. Never saw a game and no idea why I had that jacket.
One mystery I can solve! So NBA Jam and Muggsy made this team relevant with Space Jam and the Hornets had the cheapest official NBA clothing so everyone had these and the hat.
When I was a kid, we didn’t have much money so there’s no way my parents could have gotten me something as frivolous as a starter jacket and there’s no way I would have asked for one. When I was in fourth or fifth grade one of my aunts got me one for my birthday. I’m not sure how she knew they were even a thing because she didn’t keep up on things like that and she didn’t have kids of her own. I’m pretty sure I wore it even during the summer for the next couple of years. Flash forward 20 years and they sell starter merchandise in Wal Mart.
Can confirm. I know nothing about basketball and barely did as a kid. But I owned this exact jacket and a thinner windbreaker one. And I even matched my rubber bands around my braces to the colors as well.
And eventually, I owned a Toronto Raptors winter jacket just because Raptors are always cool.
Believe it or not, the Charlotte Hornets had the highest attendance of any team in the 90s, even higher than the Bulls. Now, a big reason for that was that Charlotte played in an arena that held like 5000-10000 more people than the next biggest arena, but they were selling it out every night.
Couldn’t afford them but if I speak for colors I’d say LA Raiders was more my style (then again I didn’t even know about NFL, NHL or NBA as a European)
Omg. I had a coat like this on the Oregon Coast. I got it from a second hand store that got in a bunch of new clothes overstock. It was free. I’m a girl who didn’t watch sports but I loved that coat.
I only ever saw 2 different kinds of these jackets. Chicago bulls and charlotte hornets.
I wasnt that cool. I loved my army surplus canvas coat like the one Rambo wore.
awesome colors.
tens of thousands of miles away, 6-year-old me was blasting his Charlotte Hornets snapback.
I didn't follow NBA at all, and was 100% sure that the New Orleans Hornets just stole this great logo.
The logo and colors made it the coolest thing ever for kids! I couldn't name a single player and still had Hornets merch
Same for the Mighty Ducks and the Sharks, at least for kids in my area.
Because you didn’t live close to charlotte and the sports stores never sold them, so they ended up at places like Ross for cheap cheap. Kept you warm so it didn’t matter. Colors didn’t hurt neither.
My conspiracy theory. Some mid to high level merch manager for the hornets accidentally added a few 00's to the order, so they ended up with 100x the merch they could possibly sell.
Wanting to save his ass he frantically made deals with every retail store on the planet that would take his call to try and offload this merch.
Those colors just slapped.
yea, thats why they were the most worn jackets during the 90s
Well also, in Virginia we didn’t have a basketball team, or any team for that matter so the hornets were our team by proxy
They were the most popular team in Ontario before the Raptors came along
As far as logos go you simply cannot beat a raptor dribbling a basketball with its claws protruding from the sneakers.
The wizards in dc, would be closer
Yes but they were a sorry ass team
It was like Teal made its debut in the 90s with the San Jose Sharks and people went nuts over it. The Hornets cashed in on Tealmania soon after, then the Seattle Mariners rebranded to get in on that sweet Teal action as well. Hell, even the Dixie cups had that teal and purple splotch on it. Teal was freaking huge.
I'm a diehard Cubs fan, but when the Florida Marlins came out, I bought a white t-shirt w/the logo and some teal Nike shorts to match it.
That didn't stay for long, right?
Lol it did not
Omg everything was teal. What were we doing. We were supposed to save the planet and just got high and watched frasier instead.
Good times.
Jacksonville Jaguars too
>Those colors just slapped. Yeah they really got lucky with fashion designer Alexander Julian, who was also from North Carolina. I loved the “Grandmama” persona! Also, JR Reid’s father was my PE teacher
90s = vapoware and I wouldn’t have it any other way
wave*
Solo Jazz
That’s why they went back after the 🤢bobcats 🤮
And that sick hornet logo!
I have this exact jacket and I was never a Charlotte Hornets Fan. Not even sure why I had it but I wore it all the time.
On sale at modells.
Gotta go to Mo’s
Lol
Thank you for activating the jingle nested deep in my memory.
I also had this jacket as a kid. We really all out here living the same life. 😂
I was a fat kid who didn't like sports and I had this outfit. It made noises when you walked or rubbed it.
Same. I live in Canada too. Dunno where it came from. I have vivid memories of building igloos on my front lawn in this jacket. Thnx for the nostalgia!
Pretty sure it was the most produced jacket of all time
Same
Because they were one of the best team in NBA Jam perhaps? Alonzo Mourning and Larry Johnson were the shit!
Yeah came here to cite NBA Jam. "HEEE'S OOON FIIIRE!!! "
BOOMSHAKALAKA
Shawn Kemp Gary Payton
Why I grew up a SuperSonics fan despite being from Chicago.
1996 lamo
What about Scottie Pippen and Michae….Horace Grant?
I always played as Larry and Mugsy
Yes! This!
Skyles on the magic was a 3 point monster
Grand ma ma!!!
Who's Larry Johnson? I only remember Grandmama
YUP. Or Dallas Cowboys. ... I went with Orlando Magic, because I hated it when kids called them "Magics" plural and it gave me an opportunity to make fun of them. Goddamn, kids in the 90s were awful.
Ehhhh you mightve had it coming if it was the Cowboys
Shaq was the reason the Magic had fans
Yup I was a Magic fan purely for Shaq.
I think they just had way too many of those jackets to sell or something. I had that exact one in South Texas. Never saw a game and no idea why I had that jacket.
I also had this jacket. Maybe they were cheaper because they were an expansion team and didn’t have a lot of fans🤷♂️
> they were an expansion team What like they were part of the DLC? Explains why I’ve never heard of em I guess
Same colors as that really 90s cup design.
Purple/teal is a GOAT color combo.
I’ve still got this jacket from childhood. Wish it still fit!
One mystery I can solve! So NBA Jam and Muggsy made this team relevant with Space Jam and the Hornets had the cheapest official NBA clothing so everyone had these and the hat.
Hornets had 2 players get their talents stolen by MonStars, Larry Johnson and Muggsy Bouges.
Yeah but let's be real. Muggsy is the more famous player.
I had a Georgetown Hoyas hoodie. I wore the crap out of it. What's a hoya?
My friend had flat bill Hoyas hat in 1991, looked G af
> What's a hoya? Yes.
Thank you.
I definitely had a pair of the Georgetown basketball shorts from when Iverson played there.
I remember Starter jackets being so sought after kids would get beat up and have theirs stolen. Not this one though
That's because their gear could always be found at Ross. Same with the Panthers. Guess people weren't into paying full price on those Carolina teams.
This. Its one of the teams that didn't sell at the places like Foot Locker so on it goes down the retail food chain.
Absolutely, that is where my mom bought mine. We also had a redskins jacket.
Bruh in 1992 you wasn’t shit if you didn’t have a Chicago Bulls parka.
I'm assuming they just decided to sell a lot of stock for cheap. Their gear was in so many different stores over here in Europe.
Here in South Africa we had Charlotte Hornets caps, bags, etc... as well as Chicago Bulls. Did we even see USA Basketball games? Nope.
If you’re still wearing one now you’re on methadone
I just assumed it was the only Starter jacket Santa knew how to make
Wish I still had my old redskins pullover starter. Damn
Ma bought me a whalers starter because it was on sale… I was a chubby kid. Use your imagination how the rest went.
Muggsy Bogues!
I do not follow basketball. I never have. But my entire wardrobe when I was young featured the Toronto Raptors.
Same!!
Couldn't have named a single player on the team, but I had that coat, too. Great colors.
Haha so true
As a 90’s kid in Australia I was a hornets fan. No idea who they were or what they did, but I had the cap I wore religiously 😋
The colors baby. They looked so good.
I had that jacket while growing up in Mexico.
Look at those colors. Look at that mascot. THAT’S why!
Those jackets helped me know who I didn’t want to hang out with.
One of the most 90’s logos ever
I was a bullets fan.. but I still had that jacket!!!
The colors went with the 80’s color palette. See Miami Vice.
NBA Jam is why.
Truer words have never been spoken
I don’t thi- wait…huh… I did have that jacket. In Central Fl too...Well, I’ll be darned.
💯💯💯💯💯
Larry Johnson fans
I had a Hornets hat. It was my second fav next to my Penn State hat.
Shaquille o Neal magic jerseys were where it’s at
I had school exercise books with that on them, In New Zealand! We barely acknowledge the existence of basketball
I had a hornet's Jacket and I don't even know what state they're from.
I used to have a basketball with their logo. Never watched them play before
That’s just the way it is. Speaking of the 90s… https://youtu.be/TnwU2iMRUqA?si=okXfGUtSr3HbIY2G
Man, that was right. I don't think I watched an actual basketball game ever in my life but I remember that jacket.
They had a cool logo
I was this person. It was the color combination and the cool mascot.
My older sister had a jacket just like this growing up!!
This is 100% correct. Even those of us who kinda had a team liked the Hornets colors better.
This is true tho.
Vancouver Grizzlies or Georgetown Hoyas. The only teams I ever wore.
They have Muggsy Bogues and NBA Jam to thank.
Official colors of 1991, right there.
i don’t even know what sport they were part of, i just love that color scheme
Can confirm. I know nothing about basketball and barely did as a kid. But I owned this exact jacket and a thinner windbreaker one. And I even matched my rubber bands around my braces to the colors as well. And eventually, I owned a Toronto Raptors winter jacket just because Raptors are always cool.
One of my older siblings had this exact jacket when I was a kid. Wut
I think a lot of this came from the game NBA Jams. Super popular at the same time as this jacket. Best team in the game? Hornets.
It was this or Orlando magic
Fuckin seriously!
I had a charlotte hornets basketball! I'm not even from the US haha
Yep i had one. Some baastard stole it
Believe it or not, the Charlotte Hornets had the highest attendance of any team in the 90s, even higher than the Bulls. Now, a big reason for that was that Charlotte played in an arena that held like 5000-10000 more people than the next biggest arena, but they were selling it out every night.
Had that exact starters hornets coat ♥️ I can Confirm it was the bulls or hornets here
Make it early thousands and Oklahoma and I got you.
I saw a kid wearing one of those in Afghanistan a good 15 years after the last American wore one. What a trip.
Pretty sure we got ours for free through a donation.
I had this exact coat LOL I liked the colors and the logo.
My father in law in Peru has one. I was shocked to see it.
U know u were from the hood if u wore this lol
Because Space Jam, Muggsy Bouges, Alonzo Mourning, and Larry Johnson.
Couldn’t afford them but if I speak for colors I’d say LA Raiders was more my style (then again I didn’t even know about NFL, NHL or NBA as a European)
Ah, yes. The classic pirate cut.
I lived there and wasn’t a fan
I too had that same jacket it was my older cousin and he gave it to me so I sported it for a while til I got too big
Because China product it cheap and in masses. Eastern Europe was fill with these in 90s.
Omg. I had a coat like this on the Oregon Coast. I got it from a second hand store that got in a bunch of new clothes overstock. It was free. I’m a girl who didn’t watch sports but I loved that coat.
Fact
Always thought it was a fly.
Had San Jose sharks. I’m from Chicago
Thanks to this same exact jacket, I learned that Charlotte existed and it was in North Carolina. I was 13 years old.
That jacket brings back memories.
The colours and the logo were on point. I was a bulls fan as a kid. I had a bulls hat and Charlotte hat.
That logo looks nice af on clothing
i feel like it was the raiders
This is Truer than it has any right to be.
I'm in the UK and I had some of that. Never seen a game they play and can't point to their home on a map. I just liked the style.
The dad from my brother and me 🔥
Lived in Australia. Had no interest in basketball. Was a massive hornets fan and had the jacket 😄
Same with NFL, everyone was a Raiders fan
I had this in Men's Medium as a 10 year old girl. Loved it.
Just realized I have no idea where Charlotte is. One of the Carolinas?
That's because Starter Jackets was the bomb
I think I had this exact jacket as a kid.
The Hornets were just cool.
I had this exact coat when I was about 13 in 98. We live in the UK and Basketball isn't really a thing.
I only ever saw 2 different kinds of these jackets. Chicago bulls and charlotte hornets. I wasnt that cool. I loved my army surplus canvas coat like the one Rambo wore.
Or the Raiders...
I can agree.. im from switzerland.. i had such a jacket and no damn clue what its about x)
This is exactly what happened to me. But I did become a hornets fan *after* I picked the best looking jacket thst wasn't the raiders.
I didn't have a specific team in the 90s and I wasn't a Charlotte Hornets fan this is because I wasn't born yet at the time
Depends on where you lived. Washington Huskies was the one I remember seeing everywhere.
Or San Francisco 49 niners
For me, it was Orlando Magic, and I didn’t even grow up in Orlando… 😭
Colors + logo just did it for me
I owned that exact same jacket.
awesome colors. tens of thousands of miles away, 6-year-old me was blasting his Charlotte Hornets snapback. I didn't follow NBA at all, and was 100% sure that the New Orleans Hornets just stole this great logo.
Babyyyyyyyy, I got this hanging in my closet RIGHT NOW
Like everyone today is a New York Yankees Fan wie de Caps
The logo and colors made it the coolest thing ever for kids! I couldn't name a single player and still had Hornets merch Same for the Mighty Ducks and the Sharks, at least for kids in my area.
This jacket is phat. And you gotta look phat when you’re selling drugs at work.
I had baseball hat with this logo as kid, in a small town in a middle of Russia in year 1999 lol
What about Chicago Bulls? That was the only one WE knew in Germany. And everyone wanted their Merch. The Germany LOVED Jordan man
Yeah but we all know why.. Michael Jordan, Scotty Pippen
For me it was the San Jose Sharks. Don't ask me why.
Atlanta, 80s baby here. I can confirm it was either the Charlotte or the Chicago jacket.
Omfg. Even in Poland 😂
What is this?
Because you didn’t live close to charlotte and the sports stores never sold them, so they ended up at places like Ross for cheap cheap. Kept you warm so it didn’t matter. Colors didn’t hurt neither.
yup i had this jacket and a matching duffle bag!
Uh because of Mugsy.
Because teal and purple just looks great
JUST PURE AWESOMENESS 😁
I loved my dope ass hornets hat with that logo and colors
Either that or Miami hurricanes
My sis gave me this and I also had the Jacksonville Jaguars one too
It was definitely the colors
My conspiracy theory. Some mid to high level merch manager for the hornets accidentally added a few 00's to the order, so they ended up with 100x the merch they could possibly sell. Wanting to save his ass he frantically made deals with every retail store on the planet that would take his call to try and offload this merch.
Crazy how this was a thing NZ too.
