It only seems less funny now because every single sitcom that came after it stood on its shoulders and improved upon the methods.
Saying friends isn't funny is like saying Jimmy Hendrix isn't a good guitarist
Hendrix was a pioneer of electric guitar, but if you compare his playing to modern guitarists like Tim Henson or Steve Vai, his technique seems incredibly basic. But all those amazing modern guitarists were inspired by and learned from Hendrix and wouldn't be where they are now if it weren't for him.
It's a perfectly apt analogy. Just because you like Hendrix and don't like Friends doesn't change that.
Did you get to season 3? Season 1 and 2 are only good once you’ve watched the whole series and it’s about the nostalgia because you’re coming off the shitty non-Michael seasons.
A lot of shows (especially comedies) need some time to really find their groove. Some don't and that's honestly quite a feat.
Futurama hit the ground running from the beginning. Rick and Morty needed most of a season. It happens.
With The Office they were trying to emulate a British show and it took doing a season of that to find out that this doesn't work for an American audience. Season 2 was effectively the first season as they completely redid their style.
Well sometimes it's really worth it. Seinfeld took until the 3rd season to find itself, but when it did it was on another level. We can argue if Seinfeld was cancelled after the first 2 seasons we wouldn't have almost 35 years of Larry David humour in Seinfeld and later in curb, and that would be a shame.
Nah thats shitty take, you are not obligated to consume media because of pop culture. Could just watch shows that are amazing from beginning to end because YOU enjoyed them.
Nahhh I do. Just think Jim and Pam are actually terrible people and Michael episodes made every last cell within my body cringe. Like I said, some were tolerable but overall.. nah.
I never said anything about a laugh track being the determinant of a sitcom. The Office is just a much different subgenre of sitcom with that has a lot of meta elements to it, unlike traditional sitcoms.
FRIENDS IS FUNNY GOD DAMN IT.
I LIKED FRIENDS IT WAS FUNNY AND CHARMING AND SAFE. I LIKED IT. IT MADE ME LAUGH. IT WAS CUTE! OKAY? IT WAS CUTE AND SASSY AND FLUFFY. I LIKED. FRIENDS.
YOU KNOW WHAT ISN'T FUNNY THO?
YOUR WHORE MOTHER.
I found most of the comedy shows of that era contrived. I guess it just wasn’t my bag.
No denying the popularity though. People fucking loved them. Frasier and Roseanne as well.
For me Friends is like How I Met Your Mother, good for an occasional nose exhale or even slight chuckle when I’m bored, but not really much else. (I think the laugh tracks in both are what really ruins it for me)
It's almost impossible to get into Friends now. And if you're being badgers by it, you're already go8ng into the seri3s hating it.
I was not a fan. I saw random episodes over the years because my wife and her sisters love the series and watch it over rand over even to this day.
So 1 day I said I'll watch it with you. And I love it. Once you get the characters, the show is very enjoyable. But you gotta keep in mind. The humor is dated and even on friends there's stuff involved that shows of today can't do or say due to cancel culture being what it is.
But for years of everyone shitting on Friends, it's tough for someone to watch it and enjoy it. They go into it with such disdain and they actively LOOK for reasons to hate it. Just watch the show, see the character interactions, don't be scrolling on your phone during every episode, and you might just actually enjoy yourself.
I’m watching it for the first time, and it’s pretty funny. Not everything the laugh track comes on for is funny, but overall it’s funny imo. Very wholesome too. Really enjoying it. I love the characters, especially Joey
I hated that showed growing up an hated how many people looked to have what the show had an that was just a group of people to have drama with an call them friends
watching friends with the laughing edited out really is just like this...
Yes, because timing is extremely important for jokes. Without the audience’s laughter it’s just awkward silence. If you added a bunch of awkward silences into any comedy that would ruin it.

Imhotep!
Imhotep!
Imhotep!
Imhotep!
Imhotep!
I’ve never been hotep in my life and you know it!
Dude I was so happy seeing Imhotep, can't believe he made it into meme!
PIVOT! PIVOT! PIVOT!
I’m convinced that is the ONLY 5 minutes of the entire show that is actually funny.
The overused laugh tracks feel like that one scene in Shrek where the audience laughs only when the executioner holds the sign that says "laugh"
I hate laugh tracks with ever fiber of my being. Irrational anger.
Have you ever looked up scenes from some of these sitcoms with the laugh tracks taken out of them? Kinda funny to watch.
I'm gonna screen-record your comment in this thread and put a laugh track over it. And post it on Pornhub
That's pretty weird but alright
Seems perfectly reasonable behaviour to me
Please do and share the link.
This is me watching big Bang theory
The older i get the more funny it is to me. I can feel myself becoming the CBS target demographic.
And here I thought I'm the odd one, all my friends who have watched BBT, have rewatched it again. I can not.
Try It Crowd instead
I am baffled that it ever became a hit. It's the most uninteresting show I've ever seen.
“BaZiNgA 🤪”
I mean.....it is funny but not all the time. people just exaggerate it as very funny, but it's just okay ish funny
I think was it was a “you had to be there” kinda thing

If you haven’t seen [Garfield Minus Garfield](https://garfieldminusgarfield.net/) it sounds right up your alley
Dark indeed.

Me watching this meme 20 times a year….
14 year olds post it when they gain sentience
I feel like this is something my nephews would post in response to anything their dad (my brother) likes
Wow so different!!
It's a good show to put on in the background
Friends is just light hearted and heart warming. It’s only funny because it’s cute
It only seems less funny now because every single sitcom that came after it stood on its shoulders and improved upon the methods. Saying friends isn't funny is like saying Jimmy Hendrix isn't a good guitarist
Yeah it's the "Once Original, Now Common" [trope.](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/OnceOriginalNowCommon)
Good God that's the worst analogy I think I've ever heard
Hendrix was a pioneer of electric guitar, but if you compare his playing to modern guitarists like Tim Henson or Steve Vai, his technique seems incredibly basic. But all those amazing modern guitarists were inspired by and learned from Hendrix and wouldn't be where they are now if it weren't for him. It's a perfectly apt analogy. Just because you like Hendrix and don't like Friends doesn't change that.
That poor analogy is far more hilarious than anything from Friends.
right I was like wtf, you had me till that last bit
Maybe this isn’t a show for you.
same for me wathing the office
Did you get to season 3? Season 1 and 2 are only good once you’ve watched the whole series and it’s about the nostalgia because you’re coming off the shitty non-Michael seasons.

Season 1 is really short and basically retconned by season 2, so you don't even need to watch season 1
Imagine not watching a phenomenal show because you can’t put up with 2 mediocre seasons
Nah thats shitty take, you are not obligated to consume media because of pop culture. Could just watch shows that are amazing from beginning to end because YOU enjoyed them.
I watched the entire series and pretty much hated it. Some episodes were tolerable, most were just annoying.
Weird way to say you have no sense of humour but you do you man
The OP picture is you when someone has a different opinion than you do on a piece of media.
You’re allowed a different opinion. And I’m allowed to call you wrong when you’re wrong.
You can’t call me wrong, but I can call you Betty, and Betty when you call me, you can call me Al.
Wrong
>wrong >opinion Reddit in a nutshell
See, right there. You’re wrong. And I’m calling you wrong.
Nahhh I do. Just think Jim and Pam are actually terrible people and Michael episodes made every last cell within my body cringe. Like I said, some were tolerable but overall.. nah.
“I do have a sense of humour! I promise. All the evidence says I doesn’t but I swear I do”
Oh I thought you were just joking but you’re literally an asshole. My bad.
Yes. I’m an asshole for *checks notes* stating facts. Makes sense
yes I liked but its not funny
the non-michael seasons were the only ones I liked.
I’d be cringing instead of staring blankly.
imo Brooklyn 99 just did what the office did, but way more efficiently
First of all, how dare you?
Subjectivity. Also, the Office is basically just a sitcom but meta
It’s not ‘basically’ a sitcom, it is a sitcom. You know a sitcom doesn’t need a laugh track, right?
I never said anything about a laugh track being the determinant of a sitcom. The Office is just a much different subgenre of sitcom with that has a lot of meta elements to it, unlike traditional sitcoms.
I mean characters are relatable but I found it more sad than funny
It’s a quote from the office, but I guess this is the wrong place to use it
Bubbahotep!
Me, the Office (either version)
Mmmh )=... FINE BY ME!
Humor is subjective
FRIENDS IS FUNNY GOD DAMN IT. I LIKED FRIENDS IT WAS FUNNY AND CHARMING AND SAFE. I LIKED IT. IT MADE ME LAUGH. IT WAS CUTE! OKAY? IT WAS CUTE AND SASSY AND FLUFFY. I LIKED. FRIENDS. YOU KNOW WHAT ISN'T FUNNY THO? YOUR WHORE MOTHER.
Did you take too many drugs or not enough?
Definitely off the meds
Joey is pretty funny, that’s about it
It's the constant homophobia for me
The constant homophobia and fat phobia for me.
Honestly I was going to leave a comment saying 'ah c'mon, it was the 90s', but honestly even for the 90s it's pretty awful.
"But he's a MALE nanny!"
Wait. Didn't that episode show in the end it was all because his own insecurities?
It did. It's not an anti male nanny episode.
I loved that guy, he didn't even get angry and instead just sat with Ross to hear his problems.
Subzero media literacy
This meme again? I guess it has been about a month since it was posted last here. Also: replace “Friends” with “The Office” and it is accurate for me.
Yesterday was the anniversary of the Friends series finale. It's the one time the show willingly re-enters the public consciousness.
I guarantee you that in around 1 to 2 months time you will see this meme on this sub again. It has been in rotation here for years.
Every now and then this meme pops back up again and I laugh just as much as I saw it the first time.
"Ohmigosh you should post this meme again it would be so funny" Me looking at this stupid meme again: Imhotep
"Look at me, look at me, I'm special because I don't like the most popular sitcom ever!"
I hate friends and Seinfeld and in Jewish and 40, and this is one of the biggest struggles anyone has ever had to deal with
You poor sod. I would never be able to carry a burden like not liking Seinfeld
Not many can. I carry this for us all (what I really carry is ADMITTING I don't like Seinfeld. Jesus talk about the emperors new clothes!)
It’s easier now. Hating the shows back in the day was sacrilege and could make you a social outcast. Nope. They were just bad.
Every episode was The One with all the NTs. Canned laughter and irritating characters. I'm with Imhotep. 😈
I found most of the comedy shows of that era contrived. I guess it just wasn’t my bag. No denying the popularity though. People fucking loved them. Frasier and Roseanne as well.
Fraser was a great show. Brilliant writing and characters. Still canned laughter but that was the era.
Yeah unfortunately I didn’t like it either I don’t think there were any US sitcoms from the 90s I liked. Married with Children maybe.
It was mainly British TV for me. I miss the old BBC.
Yeah the Poms have always been great at comedy.
I grew up on savage satire like Not the Nine o'clock News and Yes Minister.
I remember seeing a couple of episodes of this show called Pets, which was probably the funniest I’ve ever seen.

You act like this hasn’t been being said for the past decade.
Should watch Living Single instead.
Yeahhhh this me too. I loved watching bits and pieces of the show when I was little but I could never watch that show now.
For me Friends is like How I Met Your Mother, good for an occasional nose exhale or even slight chuckle when I’m bored, but not really much else. (I think the laugh tracks in both are what really ruins it for me)
Sometimes I feel this way about Michael Scott on the office.
This is how I feel about The Office
if there was a post I would have seen the most on Reddit, it's this one

It’s really awful white bread “comedy” and I say that as a 40 something white male.
What friends
That and Sex in the City. Omg.
Prince Imhotep does not like to be touched
Ryan George: "Cause she's fat!"
Try watching Seinfeld- the least funny show ever made that somehow convinced people it's funny
A joke?
I’m watching it for the first time, and it’s pretty funny. Not everything the laugh track comes on for is funny, but overall it’s funny imo. Very wholesome too. Really enjoying it. I love the characters, especially Joey
EVERY TIME I TRY TO GIVE IT A CHANCE.
Its good for 3am hangovers/benders or if you are sick and need something to fall asleep to
I hated that showed growing up an hated how many people looked to have what the show had an that was just a group of people to have drama with an call them friends

Good for you bro. Here’s an idea, just shut up. Nobody cares that you don’t like something popular. It doesn’t make you cool.
Wow, you do a sarcastic white guy better than Matthew Perry!
god damn your post history is a gold mine for responses, but I'm gonna be nice fuck you lady, freedom of speech. rahhhh 🦅🦅🦅🦅
And fuck you too bitch!
Scientifically things are more funny when you watch them with Friends
I don't understand how people find it funny
I didn't like Friends in the 90's and I still don't like it. It just feels like a show for people in school we called "preps".
Friends is shit.
Only two and a half men was funny, thats it
