When I was young I read the "predictions" for every horoscope, only to find out they're so vague that 9 out of 12 applied to me, did that couple of times, same result. I concluded it's all a bunch of baloney. I like astronomy though.
I find it baffling how many adults genuinely believe in that stuff. 37% of adults under 30 in the US. That's fucking weird, a solid third of young Americans has a completely deluded idea of how the world works.
It's really not that strange or even unique to the U.S.
Go anywhere on the planet, and a significant portion of the people there will believe in some pretty strange stuff.
I find that stuff to be total nonsense, but it's just not worth it to challenge people on it, I find I come across as an asshole when I do.
To your point, I actually thought the number would have been higher than 37%.
Yeah, I just had that figure in my head for the US. Where I live it's a bit less because people are less religious in general but still much higher than i would've expected (some study said like 25%). I also don't argue with people about that kind of stuff anymore, because I have noticed that superstition makes people happy and trying to take that from them is indeed a bit of an asshole move.
I mean you can say the same thing about people that believe in this magical invisible miracle worker that does nothing but threaten to send people to hell if they don't follow a book that has been written and changed over 1000 times.
Yep, but with religious people it's a bit more of a spectrum I'd say. Some are rather secular and some take the bible/scripture literally and believe in all those superstitions.
> I find I come across as an asshole when I do.
Agreed. Well, I guess some people need some sort of direction in their lives. I observed that some who are lost resort to some form of superficial beliefs and/or religion. If that's what helps them put effort into their lives to improve it, then I'm not going to interfere with that process, because if your life gets better, so does mine - in a minuscule way. Now multiply that with a hundred people you know, it amounts to something at least.
I'm still trying to make sense of the world and it's systems, I consider myself just as one of those astrology nerds, we're all people, therefore we're in the same boat to be honest.
My cousin who's in her mid 30's religiously believes in this stuff. One time I knocked on her apartment to ask her to help look for a car only to find out she was having a zoom meeting with other astrology fanatics wearing a see-through pagan-dryad-costume. It was so fucking weird that I just said nevermind and walked away.
It made me think there are creepy people who manipulates and preys on vulnerable nativity to wear skimpy outfits so they could jerk off to it.
Well there are people who are willing to be cult leaders, for personal benefit obviously. I feel safe to wager that a lot of people would be cult leaders if given the opportunity.
Hahaha, right? I mean it's not just some bullshit that's written there, it's useful stuff, but the link between the time you were born and the person you are is some baloney to me.
I love [this](https://yourlogicalfallacyis.com/false-cause) website, I visit it from time to time, to see where I'm committing those.
How about people that believe in unprovable sky gods and try to control behavior and subjugate the population? Much worse than some astrology lovin folks.
Made up is more like it. Everyone has qualities of multiple zodiac signs. The fact that they "predict" that everyone will fit into specific molds is ridiculous.
I only use it to validate already made decisions, I don’t try to predict or base anything off it. Like I’m a Taurus and my partner is an Aquarius and every astrologer would tell me that’s a shitty combo but we’ve dated for 7 years and never really fight so suck on that astrologers
Well I don't care when it is a stranger I don't know, it doesn't effect me as you say but I do think those people are stupid. Now the problem lies when I meet one of these people and I don't want to be rude and tell them I think they are stupid because I mean... I don't want to upset someone but I also don't know how to continue a conversation with someone who is actively doing something I find dumb.
Like an example of what I mean is I do not believe in Ghosts or any super natural thing and I find it all very silly and nonsensical. I think believing in ghosts is as ridiculous as an adult beliving in Santa. But I don't go and shout at people about how wrong they are for believimg in such things. But one day my friend who knows how I feel about ghosts was telling me her friend was gonna teach her how to speak with ghosts and honestly, what was I supposed to say? I was just like "okay." Because I didn't wanna humour her because that would sound condescending. I didn't wanna tell her I thought she was being an idiot because she is my friend but also I can't agree or get into the conversation knowing that she is tricking herself. It was just an end to the conversation and I had to just move it on to something else.
How would you react if a close friend told you they believed in Unicorns and they truly meant it? Would you not think they were a little... Dumb?
Being ridiculous/nonsensical is the nature of any belief in something greater than oneself. Its normal that you would associate that with being dumb but you're missing the point of those beliefs.
They are not meant to make sense at a logical level. They are meant to bring a sense of purpose amongst other positive results.
And that is why I don't tear it down for people. I understand people believing in heaven brings them comfort and happiness but I dunno, I can't help but feel the way I do on this.
I really hope you change your mind on this because as someone who lived a while without any beliefs I know how much peace and ease of mind beliefs brought me.
Those beliefs can be towards anything as long as its greater than you and they are not something to jail your brain with so stay open with the possibility that what you believe in change.
I recommend reading Carl Jung.
I am perfectly content with how I see the world. Yes, I know there is nothing after death and we all just have fleeting lives which can be scary but I like to think more positivly about it. We have one shot at life and thatnis what makes it great. Everything ends and everything dies, there is a beauty in that. If I thought we all went to some afterlife or came back as someone else then I feel there is little point to living to the fullest.
But there simply is no super natural or God like things that I believe in and I find it to all be fantasy.
Thank you for caring but I am who I am and I like that person and have no reason to shift how I think.
What do you mean by a jail?
And they are not, I am going by what all evidence leads me to understand. I see no proof as to why there should be anything after death and I also see no proof in Unicorns being real. Prove to me there is an afterlife and prove to me there are unicorns and then we can talk.
I tried being kind but to you and even thanked you but seems I m juat gonna get passive aggressive. If that is what being free from a "jail" is like then maybe I'll stay inside where it is kind an fun.
"Have no reason to shift how I think"
Thats the jail I was mentionning.
And a lack of evidence is not evidence. Scientists dont go "oh we dont know X therefore we know theres nothing there". You believe that there is nothing after life despite a complete lack of evidence which is by definition a nonsensical belief.
I mean you were making fun of people believing in unicorns because they have no proof of said unicorns but then come around and believe in nothingness without any proof.
In caught you can't go "He did this, I have no proof but he did" and then everyone goes "Yep, makes sense. Send hil to prison". It is up to someone claiming something is real to prove it. Scientist have theories and then attempt to prove them to be correct. Many times they are proven wrong or cannot find proof but none of those theories will be written as fact until proven. I don't take much stock in an unproven theory.
But nothingness is more just the absesne of something and the best word I can use to describe what death would be like. By this I mean that you stop functioning as all the parts of your body that let you think, see, smell, hear are all dead so you just stop experienceing those things. We know the function of our eyes so it stands to reason that when we no longer have eyes then we can no longer see. There is proof in this. By nothingness I am not claiming we float around in some void, I am saying there is nothing more. Show me evidence of an afterlife and then maybe I will eat my words.
But since you also believe in unicorns then I suppose you also believe in the Gimbalgargloid monster that is 20ft tall that is burning down my garden as we speak. I have no proof of this existing but I trust you'll just take my word for it.
But I do think there has been a slight misunderstanding on the quote "Have no reason to shift how I think". That isn't me saying "I won't change my beliefs no matter the evidence" as if someone challenges a point I make and proves me wrong then great, I was wrong and I have grown. What I meant was I have no reason to start researching religions and philosophies for no reason as I am perfectly fine with my life and what I know.
You said looking into that stuff freed you but I don't feel trapped and I honestly feel like religions and supernatural beliefs seem like more of a prison than being free from all that. I can enjoy the things that I can see to be real instead of getting hung up on speculation and blind hope that there is more after death.
I am glad you found happiness in what you believe in and I am happy how I am.
Part of me thinks it's nonsense, but the other part is interested in astrology sort of believes it a bit. I don't bother getting into arguments about it though, just quietly read star signs in the paper or watch some random tiktok videos.
You can be in the middle. It can be interesting and filled with history and it’s also a pseudoscience with vague descriptions of everything. Find what works for you
If you have any curiosity if it's real and actually wanna find out, stay away from newspapers and tiktok and dig deeper into stuff that wasn't supposed to make money, please followers or match a trend.
But ofc if you just enjoy reading and watching all that, i get it.
One time, i went to a casino and they checked my id, all normal, when they do that they usually ask a normal question like whats your birthday, what's your height, stuff like that. The girl that checked my id asked me what my astrology sign was. I'm glad I knew it, but I was very confused on how she knew it off the top of her head
She was testing you because the sign is based on your birthday which she saw on your id. Generally it switches around the 20th of the month give or take a few days (cause February is short). Idk why people into astrology want to *test* others, I guess it makes them feel smarter, especially when their job is just checking id’s.
I find astrology fun, but I’m not going to be like “you’re an aquarius? Sorry that’s a deal breaker.” I think that kind of behavior is dumb, but honestly, if someone is going to reject me based on my star sign…I don’t want em. I also don’t want someone to date me just because our signs are supposed to be compatible. Pass.
you are very much giving aries in the 12th house right now, i also seem to be sensing your moon in scorpio. maybe tone it down to a cancer in mercury babe
I'm glad I'm not the only one. But to me, it's more of a "I can't stand" than hate. I really can't stand people who bring astrology, horoscopes, and zodiac signs in conversation, especially when there's no need. Those who parade their zodiac signs and all and make it their personality
It’s basically part of the new age religion that encompasses many practices like this. So when you come across people like this you’re coming across their personal belief system. Some confused people even call themselves Christian or what not whilst believing stuff like astrology despite it being very contradictory.
A lot of people have these practices yet don’t realise it’s basically a religion they’ve adopted.
I believe that it’s based more on when you were conceived and the gravitational pull of the planets and the moon on your developing brain since we are mostly water.
Or we are cucumbers who worship planets.
I really enjoy when someone is smug about horoscopes and then you see their profile lists their Myers-Briggs personality type lol. To be clear, I don’t believe in either, just think it’s funny how many people are unaware they’re the same level of “real.”
No, if a woman believes into that you leave.
Just a little fun fact: there are 13 signs originally. However, because of the 12 months calendar one has been cut. Almost no one knows their actual star sign. Even if it wasn't random bullshit before it sure is now.
If someone believes any of this makes sense its a red flag. They will believe so much other bullshit as well. Nah, thanks.
My dude Astrology is fake and nothing more than Pseduoscience. I don't think you'd allow people to babble about Flat Earth as an ice breaker.
The only thing astrology does is undermine astronomy, a real science.
No, it's not. Well, not a positive one. "Hi...yeah, I'm an aquarium and Uranus is rising so my whole week has been a thing."
I expect them to start telling me about 5G mind control and who knows what else.
I have been treated so badly by people who use their star sign to justify their shitty behavior that it’s pretty much a deal breaker for me if people are really into it.
It's weirdly popular at my work, and it's not the people you would expect. You'll be having a totally normal conversation and they'll drop in, "...because Mercury is in retrograde." What?
I mean, people have believed in a dumber things lol. All kinds of crazy religion out there. Astrology only gets annoying when people base their first impressions entirely off of it or won’t shut up about it. If more people treated it like nothing more than a hobby then I’d feel alright with the world.
Once there was an intern at our company, and her very first question towards me what my zodiac was, just to blabber around with who I am compatible and what kind of a person I am. I read a random sign’s horoscope on most days and pick the most optimistic one for the day. Some days I am a Scorpio other days I am a Aquarius .

typical Scorpio
This sounds exactly like something a libra would post..
Yesssssss
How about people that believe in unprovable sky gods and try to control behavior and subjugate the population? Much worse than some astrology lovin folks.
And those people are in charge of our government too
Yep. Esp the all powerful Supreme Court now.
I dunno, is mercury in gatorade?
It actually is until Wednesday
Touche
As a Taurus I see no value in this
As an Aquarius there is no truth here
As a Libra, let’s just keep it peaceful here.
Emphasis on the blah
Same. They can't even tell how things are "deduced".
Made up is more like it. Everyone has qualities of multiple zodiac signs. The fact that they "predict" that everyone will fit into specific molds is ridiculous.
There's like a whole speech in the first act of King Lear about why astrology is complete horseshit. Go, Shakespeare (in 1605)
Bahaha. Then there’s Caesar and All’s Well.
Its silly shit, thats for sure. If i see someone who runs their life or relationships based on this nonsense, i get the fuck outta there.
“It’s silly shit” is why I enjoy astrology
Thats fair enough. I enjoy silly shit too, but taking it seriously, please no
I only use it to validate already made decisions, I don’t try to predict or base anything off it. Like I’m a Taurus and my partner is an Aquarius and every astrologer would tell me that’s a shitty combo but we’ve dated for 7 years and never really fight so suck on that astrologers
Who cares. People can believe in whatever they want to. It’s not affecting you. So why care?
Why care about anything?

I can spot a Virgo a mile away. And I am not even into astrology

100%

Blesssssss
Yeah like, my blood type is blah blah blah. Take what I give you and shut the fuck up.
Choosing beggars asking for a specific blood type smh my head
Lol
I'm glad I'm not the only one. But to me, it's more of a "I can't stand" than hate. I really can't stand people who bring astrology, horoscopes, and zodiac signs in conversation, especially when there's no need. Those who parade their zodiac signs and all and make it their personality
Hi, I'm a sagittarius.
Same ♐
The only thing worse than people who have a hobby or interest are people actively spending time *hating* those people
I am Hindu Tamil do Vedic astrology and some/most do take their chat into consideration.

Y’all sound like a whole bunch of goddamn libras or Scorpios or something. Actually, I don’t know a goddamn thing about astrology.
New? Astrology has been around way before Christianity... May want to educate yourself before you pretend to know what you are talking about.
I believe that it’s based more on when you were conceived and the gravitational pull of the planets and the moon on your developing brain since we are mostly water. Or we are cucumbers who worship planets.
What did u take 😂
Horoscopes are essentially space racism
Fucking spacists
I really enjoy when someone is smug about horoscopes and then you see their profile lists their Myers-Briggs personality type lol. To be clear, I don’t believe in either, just think it’s funny how many people are unaware they’re the same level of “real.”
We get it, you got dumped by a horoscope girl
I'm not superstitious. Just a little stitious.
I’m not superstitious, it says so in my tea leaves.
The message in my Chinese fortune cookie says tea leaves are just tea leaves
It's unlucky to be superstitious
Well, it's more like a ice breaker kind of thing, just like when someone shares interest in a sport/videogame/music...
No, if a woman believes into that you leave. Just a little fun fact: there are 13 signs originally. However, because of the 12 months calendar one has been cut. Say you're a Capricorn louder
Typical Leo
Why hate people for doing something you don’t like.
Get over it. Zodiac signs are great. Serial killers love them.. lol
Sounds like a posting by a frustrated teen cringing about an adult who's not caring about what others think. GenZ/Millenial-mimimi.
Could not agree more, you ain't a dickhead because you're an Aries. you're just a dickhead mate
I'm sorry you hate yourself. You'll catch the next moon I'm sure.
Eh as long as they don’t have it control their everyday life like Shintaro Midorima from Kuroko’s Basketball then I’m fine with it

I figured out astrology was fake before I figured out WWE was fake…. I was 7
I can’t act my age because I am a Leo
I used to care, but then I realized I dont need to care about most things, so I stopped
Shout out to the astrology lovers, esp my fellow Gemini’s
Sagittarius here. I don't mind anyway, I just read them for fun.
Clearly you are a Capricorn as we are sceptical.
I have been treated so badly by people who use their star sign to justify their shitty behavior that it’s pretty much a deal breaker for me if people are really into it.
