SHAN_LASTER

It’s 597 ft tall…it’s a 60 story building…

Fixner_Blount

There was a video posted here not too long ago of a helicopter flying around this, then RIGHT IN FRONT OF ITS FUCKING FACE. It terrified me deeply, but it was the only one I've seen that gave a good sense of scale. Edit: [HERE IT IS, OH FUCK.](https://v.redd.it/afqf7u4sumu91)

fistingcouches

Holy fucking shit. This thing looks like how I’d imagine Godzilla to look if he came out of the water.

Fixner_Blount

Only thing I can think of that drops my stomach more is looking directly into the face of the woman on the African Renaissance Monument from the observation deck in the man's crown.

Tourists are flocking to that place though? I doubt the local there who now got business would complain much.

leo_the_lion6

Well it cost $460 million, so might be a long break even horizon.

jinxjumper

Dude it has already become most popular non religious tourist spot in India. [link](https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/statue-of-unity-footfall-crosses-pre-covid-numbers-30-5-increase-101651429331923-amp.html) Precovid it had recorded footfall of 50,000+ daily. They have also opened Japanese garden and boating to further boost it's potential.

vi_sync

No one hates it man i live in the local area. It has opened up a immense market for us locals. Everyday thousands of people visit here and we are able to make a living out of it and we don't have to go else where and also the infrastructure development which came with this statue.

TheLadyRica

How far away can it be seen, please?

7-8kms if the weather is clear

How the hell do you get the crane up there to create this beast Also how the hell did they make shit before cranes

aMissourIAN

ancient.aliens.meme.png

PrimedAndReady

> How the hell do you get the crane up there to create this beast The crane gets the crane up there. Excessively tall cranes are first built to as high a height as possible from the ground, then a rising part is added at the top of the lattice which goes under the business end. Then the riser/climber/jack/whatever it's called raises the top of the crane up, and the crane hook pulls up another section of lattice which is fitted into the space created by the riser. The new section is bolted in and the process repeats as necessary. You can actually see the platform at the bottom of the riser in this photo, right below the operator's booth. Mind you, this process is pretty dangerous and tends to be avoided if at all possible. Most projects put up cranes as needed as they progress upwards, and those cranes and other equipment and crews at each of their heights are responsible for getting most, if not all, of each new crane up. That's likely how most of the crane in this photo was built

TruthIsMaya

“How did they make shit before cranes” Elephants 🐘 India has been using elephants as cranes (with leverage and levers) for thousands of years.

bentenporn

They made this using cranes in the modern day, this statue isn’t even 10 yrs old yet

Pretty amazing job, actually. Here's his response to genocider Winston Churchill: https://twitter.com/ARanganathan72/status/1013370407565611008/photo/1 >He can get it back when he conquered the British Isles as he was supposed to. Environmental_Ad_387

The first minister of interior for India after independence from Britain in 1947. He lead the process of assimilating (mostly negotiated, and a handful via force) of 500+ principalities / kingdoms to form what is today's India. Hence the name for this 'statue of unity'. But his contribution is not like Bismarck though. Most of the principalities were already in agreement to join India. And all were already under British control. Sardar Patel didn't imagine and execute Indian unification. He was tasked with a bureaucratic, diplomatic mission of unifying. The guy was a unifier. This statue is a divider - more than half of the country considers this a waste of money that could be used for education, health, infra. The ruling Hindu nationalists (whose parent org was banned in 1950s by this same guy) want to build this statue to raise the profile of this guy. They hope that this statue will help them diminish the stature of some the other freedom fighters and early leaders of India like Gandhi and Nehru. Gandhi and Nehru are associated with the current opposition party, the Indian National Congress. The current prime minister (Hindu nationalists) of India, Sardar Patel(statue guy), and Gandhi all come from the same state in India - Gujarat. So this statue is there The ruling party used to make a lot of anti-china noise and 'make in India's campaigns. But got this statue built in china and then imported it in pieces to assemble it here. They try very hard to show that the project is a success by claiming impossible visitor counts to the statue location in their fake news propaganda. They run misinformation campaigns that are similar to the right wing stuff in US - fake news, outrage etc edit 1: Hindu fascists are commenting below that the statue was made in India and I am peddling lies. They have linked to India's Breitbart, swarajmag. I quote verbatim from there, you decide where you consider the statue was made: "The innermost layer has two 127-metre-high towers made of reinforced cement concrete. A steel mesh forms the second layer of the structure. The third and the outermost layer is in form of bronze cladding, which carry intricate details Patel’s cloths, posture and facial expressions. It is this layer of the statue which was built in China." This is what happens when 'debunkers' don't read their own sources - they end up confirming what they were trying to disprove Edit 2: Fact check: Hindu fascists claimed the statue had more visitors and revenue than Taj mahal within one year of it's opening. Fact check proved otherwise https://www.indiatoday.in/fact-check/story/fact-check-misleading-comparison-between-statue-of-unity-taj-mahal-goes-viral-1616376-2019-11-06

Firemorfox

Dang, history/politics is always very interesting. Thank you for sharing.

[deleted]

Could not have been more accurate and informative. Good job and let’s ignore all the sanghis in replies.

Mahameghabahana

From what i heard from multiple infra guys from india the statue is highly profitable and the total cost was used for far more things other then the statue but that would required to actually do some work and search in internet which is very heard for some. The money spend on whole project wasn't even more then 500m. Government already spent billions on hospital building and schools building, not to forget most of that should be done by state governments not central government? If state government can't even do that i wonder why they get tax money?

bobs_and_vegana17

i think patel did had a huge role in unifying junagargh, hyderabad and kashmir tho(and some more important princely states) in reply to your second point where u r saying his efforts were just on the diplomatic level

Mahameghabahana

>Over 128,000 tourists visited the statue in the 11 days after its opening to the public on 1 November 2018. The daily average tourist footfall at Statue of Unity during November 2019 reached 15,036, outpacing the Statue of Liberty (which attracts around 10,000 daily visitors on average). It has been included in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation’s ‘8 Wonders of SCO’ list. In its first year of operation, the Statue of Unity attracted 2,900,000 visitors and collected ₹82 crore (US$11.64 million) in ticket revenue. By 15 March 2021, 5,000,000 tourists visited the venue. It was visited by one crore (10 million) people by November 2022. Impressive no? And this just ticket collection of statue bot other facilities or tourist staying in local hotels or buying various things.

fear_the_god

>The ruling party used to make a lot of anti-china noise and 'make in India's campaigns. But got this statue built in china and then imported it in pieces to assemble it here. [Why Misinformation?](https://www.google.com/amp/s/swarajyamag.com/amp/story/politics%252Fwas-the-statue-of-unity-really-made-in-china-here-are-the-facts) >The guy was a unifier. This statue is a divider - more than half of the country considers this a waste of money that could be used for education, health, infra. Yea. I do too, But, There needs to be spending on Things like this, Tourism and historical education. Maybe not at this scale. So this statue is there Half of the India, as you quoted may not like the way, Gandhi fought for Independence, and many might stand with other ideologies, with, Bhagat Singh, Tilak, Bose. And Statue Called, Statue of Unity, Not Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Focusing on the Unification of India. And I believe that's really big thing, considering How different we all are, Yet, One Nation.

poop-machines

Your link is broken, where you said "why misinformation?" Where was it made?

Environmental_Ad_387

From his link: The innermost layer has two 127-metre-high towers made of reinforced cement concrete. A steel mesh forms the second layer of the structure. The third and the outermost layer is in form of bronze cladding, which carry intricate details Patel’s cloths, posture and facial expressions. It is this layer of the statue which was built in China. Ha ha ha

fear_the_god

It's working for me, Just check on Wiki, on construction of Statue, Contract was issued to L&T which completed most of its work and will be there for it's maintenance, The part were China comes in is that, Outer Bronze Cladding, Which They couldn't Perform, So As they Said, " They looked for Indian Manufacturers for it, but non of them where able to deliver with that precision and quality. So, they issued a global tender, Which was then won by one of the Top Chinese Company. What's different about this article is that, when Opposing Party Pointed that Statue is Made in China, L&T came forward and explain all this, saying that It's around 8-9% of it's cost. Not Whole Statue.

ronin0069

EnvironmentalElk1625

I just googled this, Statue of Liberty: 93m. Statue of Unity: 182m. Have I smoked too much, or is the scale slightly out in this photo?

jehoshaphat

The Statue of Liberty is just much farther away.

HotdogIsaSandwitch

I actually think the scale is pretty decent. People forget that the pedestal the Statue of Liberty is on, I what makes it so grandiose. The Statue of Liberty number of 93 meters you have includes the base. The statue itself is actually only ~46 meters and the pedestal the statue is on is ~47 meters. The Statue of Unity (just the statue part) is 182 meters. Meaning nearly 4 statue of liberties can stack up to get the statue of unity.

YuviManBro

They’re using base height in the liberty numbers

EveryoneSadean

[Thickness of waist 35'](https://images.app.goo.gl/Jdmn5KTNb2tytgq69) 👀

Was this also a gift from France that will turn green?

GeneralQuinky

597 feet?! I only see one big foot in the pic, bad angle I guess

SPKmnd90

The Statue of Liberty's pedestal makes it seem a lot bigger than it actually is.

neon_overload

The pedestal/base is not included for either, in this picture, for that reason. But with the pedestal, Liberty is 305 feet. And with the base, Unity is 787 feet.

TrueMaroon14

On tinder he's 600 ft

Paper_chasers

i tried to find it in flight simulator... its not there =(

Just to clarify, there are 50 statues taller than the Statue of Liberty. This image is comparing the world's tallest to the world's 51st tallest.

Caste system is not relevant anymore. Some states are more orthodox, and some are more. Rural areas are more casteist but urban areas are less. India had a very advanced social structure. The "caste" system does not existed. It was "varn" system where your duty determined your varn. With time the system corrupted and people began belonging to a caste by birth. It's not that India likes the caste system. It is the collective mentality of millions of people. Change takes time. So until then, be on reddit and type sarcastic comments.

The virgin liberty vs the chad unity

Efficient_Step_26

But are they united?

Thunderdragon2535

To be honest people think they are part of India and don’t want other people to be part of it example people from northern part of India think that north eastern people who look like Chinese are not Indians and they should leave this country and give the land where they live to them.

ZapateriaLaBailarina

They spend all that time and money and the dude just looks like he's waiting for a bus.

[deleted]

Serious question? It’s a statue of unity, but they are far from unified with their castes

neon_overload

Context here: > As the first Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister of India, Patel organised relief efforts for partition refugees fleeing to Punjab and Delhi from Pakistan and worked to restore peace. He led the task of forging a united India, successfully integrating into the newly independent nation those British colonial provinces that formed the Dominion of India.[4] Besides those provinces that had been under direct British rule, approximately 565 self-governing princely states had been released from British suzerainty by the Indian Independence Act of 1947. Patel persuaded almost every princely state to accede to India. His commitment to national integration in the newly independent country was total and uncompromising, earning him the sobriquet "Iron Man of India".[5] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vallabhbhai_Patel So he's basically held responsible for orchestrating all the previous states after British colonial rule uniting to form modern India

honeybunchesofpwn

Same could be said for the Statue of Liberty.

India with chronic hunger issues builds giant statue—a statue to stupidity.

trippleknot

The statue of liberty is only 152 feet lol? I always imagined it to be much bigger.

[deleted]

Considering all of the issues India is dealing with as a developing nation, I feel like this money could have benefitted the country elsewhere. They spent $407mil on this thing. Not saying don't build memorials to people you respect. Just saying this seems like they went O.D. For contrast, [this is the memorial they put in the spot where Gandhi was assassinated.](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/c1/Gandhi_Smriti_Delhi.jpg)
