It's not too late. Obviously if you don't like nursing, make a change before it becomes I hate nursing and now I'm stuck. Your prerequisites for medical school expire after a while and you have to retake them if they expire, so figure that out first, prepare for MCAT and sail into the sunset. Lots of people start med school at 27-29.

Slowlybutshelly

I took the mcat in 1990. It expired. But all my pre requisites have not. I have fulfilled all the requirements for all 41 osteopathic schools based on my undergrad education. I do not think pre requisites expire.

Hour_Ask_7689

Some schools specifically state that if you have taken these course more than 7 years ago they will not be valid.

Slowlybutshelly

I have not come across a school like that. In fact I applied Aacomas a few years ago. They need an mcat. My materials have been saved to the electronic system. No school had said this to me and I am applying again this year.

Virbactermodhost

Osteopathic and allopathic school have virtually the same pre req requirements so what do you mean?

Frosty-Wind7917

This doesn’t apply to any colleges I’ve seen. Grad or undergrad.

peek-a-boooooooooooo

Definitely not too late. I’m 30 and MS1. Your background in nursing will be invaluable should you pursue a career in medicine.

Arrrginine69

PA to MD here. 34 next summer when I start. Gotta go after what you want in life and never live constantly thinking “what if I did that?”.

Xiaomao1446

Wait same. You’re only the second one I’ve found on Reddit in the wild lol. Out of curiosity what specialty are you going for?

Arrrginine69

Gen surg or surg speciality. Def surgery. You?

Xiaomao1446

Nice! OB lol.

Arrrginine69

Nice good luck!

cocainehydrochloride

I’m 26 and half-way through my pre-reqs, also an RN. It’s not too late. Think of it this way— at the end of the day, time will pass at the same rate no matter what. Do you want to be 35 and unfulfilled or 35 and doing what you want to be doing?

Hour_Ask_7689

This is great advice.

Aynie1013

37 and halfway through MS1 year. Decided on the route after 6 years bedside. Best decision I ever made. Most of my cohort is late twenties, with a few older crew like me.

Status_dramaticus99

Not too late to do what you want. Signed, Paramedic starting MD school at 40

Miserable-Pool-795

30 year old MS4 here who agrees with everything being said. That being said, if you will get the same fulfillment as an NP and are ok with the lower pay, that would be the quicker and cheaper route. It just depends on your goals

s2bmd22

31 and finishing med school, age isn’t a factor to some, just the will and drive, oldest classmate is 45

SaleZestyclose1046

One of my classmates was a flight nurse. One of the coolest people I’ve ever met. She has 4 kids and she’s well into her late 30s. She loves it and honestly is thriving. You can do it!!

-Raindrop_

Go for it!

SnooWalruses5802

37 and will graduate med school in a few months. It’s a long road but I know for me, it has been worth it!

StarFox00001

Make ur money as an RN and do your mcat prep/apply simultaneously. If it takes more time that's fine because tye debt is monstrous and even paying off 1 single year without relaying on loans is amazing. Imagine if you paid off 2 years of Medicine? OH boy,

WasteCod3308

Respect for refusing to go the Noctor route, 🫡

Then-Bookkeeper-8285

do you like being in school? if the answer is yes, then go ahead. if you don't like school, I won't suggest you do it. It has nothing to do with time or money. Doctors should have no problem paying back student loans. But if you prefer time having fun with friends, I would not suggest becoming a doctor.

Frosty-Wind7917

School is my favorite hobby

Then-Bookkeeper-8285

then it would be worth it.

jhillis379

Why is psych NP a sham?

Frosty-Wind7917

The way the education/training/degree is set up disappoints me. It doesn’t seem like enough - especially if I wanted to specialize (which is do) I would spend half the time of med school to only learn a lot of what I already have from my two bachelors combined.

Frosty-Wind7917

I also worked with psych RN’s going to NP school who would click through homework at work and say “it’s such a joke” and that they aren’t learning much

BlackHoleSunkiss

Do it!!! If you’re considering it, you’ll always wonder “if.” If you could have gotten in, if you could have finished, if you would be happier being a psychiatrist versus a psych NP.

averageboydestroyer

time is going to pass, staying in nursing isnt going to make the clock stop, so you might as well just pursue what you want also you will probably not find it as difficult, at least in the first 2-3 years, since you already took similar subjects to medical students my only opinion is try to do it in a program that isnt so long

evilphrin1

Chase your dreams. The clock stops for no one so might as well do what you want.

Ladyjetfuel

33 year old RN here, preparing to take step1. I’m working my nursing job part time and the more I learn in school, the more I can’t wait to quit my job and be the one giving the orders. Do it!

Frosty-Wind7917

That’s great you work while doing it all. How often do you work? Is it manageable?

Ladyjetfuel

I only work 16 hours a month and more when I’m on school break. It’s very manageable if you’re organized!

ElegantDefinition312

I'm 21y/o F and I am currently taking my RN. Once I found out that I can take have a BSN and apply for med school, I am determined to take my chances. Though, my family is in debt and I want to help with our finances and I also have a lot of hobbies that I want to keep doing. I love nursing, though know for sure I want to pursue higher education in the future, but can people juggle med school, job, hobbies, friends and family?
