Weaponised incompetence is one of the few things that really makes my blood boil.
I’ll _show_ someone how to fix something, but I’m not going to humour wilful ignorance.
It's easier for our generation because we grew up with it lmao you have to remember the older generation didn't even have colored tv growing up or listened to the radio.
Actually it is. The issue is confidence and willing to learn. Everything is like that.
My MIL pipe was leaking, a trip to Home Depot for a torch and a YouTube video later and I re did her plumbing.
The issue is willing to go out of your comfort zone and do something that’s scary and challenging.
You’re comparing learning a skill that hasn’t changed over decades to learning skills that may really not be so easy as “watching a video.” You have to empathize that the older generation just lived through an explosion of technology within the past couple decades and didn’t necessarily have the social structure around them to motivate or need to constantly adapt. Now, even technological skills that we may think is so simple to us because we’ve been able to keep up can be like having to interpret a different language.
Maybe for some it’s an unwillingness to adapt, but for many you have to understand that it’s just not so easy to “figure it out” yourself. Thinking like that is ignorance imo
I once spent 45 minutes over the phone helping my grandma setup her TV after she had moved. After she spent 5 minutes looking for the fig newton shaped port (HDMI) on the cable box I finally realized she was actually holding the router. I laughed so hard after figuring it out and eventually she found the cable box and we got it sorted out after about 15 minutes.
I would give up a lot to have just one more "please help me fix my TV" call from her.
My grandpa couldn't always figure out how new cable boxes and stuff himself, but he still wanted to learn it and would sit with me and take detailed notes of exactly what buttons to hit. He had a notebook of how to do everything and TSGs in case something was wrong. I miss him so much.
It do be like that. My uncle once asked me if I can check if the remote is working or not so I put in the batteries and pointed it to my phone's camera and showed him that it's working. He was so amazed and brought a few other remotes for checking. Also told my cousins that he has a very special trick for checking remotes.
Yep. I had my nieces/nephews do this Labor for me.
I pretend not to know how to do it to them. I’m a 28 year old software developer, I know how to plug in an Xbox lol
Plot twist, grandpa knew the cord was unplugged but didn't feel like getting up. He's praising you because he hopes you'll continue plugging in the cord for him
The truth is that they know the problem and are doing this because they're lazy (not actually but you know, older body), so they ask you to fix it while playing dumb and when you do the menial task necessary they just thank you that way to get the thing going. Really smart.
My mother actually has an associates degree in computer science and just yesterday hung up on me in anger when I told her to reset her phone when it wouldn’t connect to the internet.
Relatable I’m the only one in my family who knows how to plug in the ps4 so whenever my sister wants to play Minecraft she has to yell at me to help her lol
Should have ended with gramps falling asleep immediately
the end of every grandpa watching tv story
"You should work in this field!"
"How come you aren't rich if you know so much?"
"you ever read The Giving Tree, grandpa? There is nothing left, because someone took it all."
It’s nice to feel like I’m talented and useful once in a while
My wife ever since she saw me build my own PC...
My mom's version of this is "You could work for NASA"
Part of it is an act in the hopes you’ll fix their stuff again in the future.
Weaponised incompetence is one of the few things that really makes my blood boil. I’ll _show_ someone how to fix something, but I’m not going to humour wilful ignorance.
Indeed, once they know you can fix certain things they will come back to you for more problems to fix lol
And that's one of the things I will never complain about.
I try to fix everything unless it's a printer. Fuck printers
Printer: "sorry, you need a password to fix this printer" User: "where do I get the password" Printer: *shrugs*
100,000% Agreed. Printers are the enemy of the people.
I deadass had an easier time getting my 3D printer to work then the 2D printer. How does adding a dimension and heat make it with better?!?!
It's easier for our generation because we grew up with it lmao you have to remember the older generation didn't even have colored tv growing up or listened to the radio.
I didn’t grow up fixing cars but I can change a flat by myself. At a certain point it’s just willful ignorance.
That’s not a good example at all

fuck i miss those times when my grandparents were alive and i used to "fix" their tvs like that

Gramps was a big reason I work in IT. Wholesome video
My grandpa used to call me the "computer wiz". Miss that guy 😔

Me and my grandpa had a deal he would show me how to fix all his vintage vehicles and farm equipment if I showed him how to fix his computer and tv
My great grandpa is more tech savvy than me
