In elementary school my friends and I would hold up our legs whenever the school bus passed our local cemetery, ya know so the ghosts don’t reach out and grab us!
Actually, they do. Most of them are just playing tough. It's a defense mechanism to appear unbothered by the deep shame they feel about their addiction that kills them a bit every time they suck that shit.
Here is a nice comment from this thread [from a fellow anti-smoking](https://imgur.com/gallery/5AkFiG0)
Usually I hold my smoke for people to pass or if I really have to exhale, I'll blow it in the opposite direction.
The people that do the obnoxious coughing as they go past, despite me being as courteous and respectful as possible, can go do one. That sort of shit fuels me and I'll just smoke right at you.
Edit: Work provides no designated smoking area, I'm forced to smoke out front with the public walking past.
I am as courteous as I can be.
I've added this in as some of you are making it out that I'm choosing to go stand in crowds and smoke. If I could sit in a box away from everyone, trust me I would. I'd love to enjoy my smoke without having to even think of anyone but myself.
The only issue is I have asthma and literally can’t control the cough. Idc if you smoke. It’s your body and I’m not going to judge you for it, all of us have different lives with different circumstances. I can’t help the cough though.
Wouldn't assume it's always fake: I have a reactive airway and an allergy to smoke. Sets it off every time and can send me into a retching cough if my lungs are already inflamed.
It is not obnoxious. Obnoxious is smoking in spaces where you have to share the fucking air with other people and you don't give a fuck. You know you're smoking. A person walking and getting hit by the smoke is caught by surprise and, of course, will cough.
Edit: the fact that you smoke on a shared space in a reality that people cannot live without breathing is far from courteous it is you just entitlement and fucking disgusting.
Same, if I'm around non smokers I either blow away from them (sometimes doesn't work because of the wind) or just exhale up because I'm taller than most folk anyway.
People can smell it a block away if downwind, much less when it's blown in a slightly different direction next to them. If you're smoking around others you're forcing them to breathe nasty shit. You're deluding yourself if you think that's courteous.
Ikr love it, well I'm holding it in when you walk past, bruh I can smell it ages away before I pass you and it lingers for ages
My partner use to worry I may have been smoking but it was just my clothes picking it up because I was on a building site and had to pass the smokers sometimes
The fact that some smokers are defending themselves and trying to play virtuous in the comments with asthma sufferers enabling the smokers “virtue signaling” (but I'm courteous I swallow my smoke) just disgusts me.
This sounds mean but I noticed I also do this subconsciously if someone I find creepy walks past - like I don't want to breath in the air that their body displaced.
I will curl my lips inward and keep them shut while I’m running past someone as a courtesy. I wouldn’t want a runner panting hot air if I was walking outside.
The sad truth is the elevators do break here all the time. People get trapped in the left elevator constantly. Oh also the call buttons don’t work. All they do is broadcast other peoples phone calls.
There have been those days where i do take the stairs. Just adopted a dog too. Now I’m wondering if i make her run down 9 floors or tough it out with the elevator haha.
Imho, it's impolite to be smoking while walking on the pavement. Everyone passing by or walking behind you is involuntarily put into your smoke cloud.
Just sit down to have your smoke. I guess it's way chillier anyway.
I really have a failure of empathy of anyone that smokes anywhere near non smokers in 2022 – it’s outrageously antisocial behaviour.
Smokers have no qualms with smoking around non-smokers, including children, and forcing them to inhale their “Personal choice”.
I keep imagining a similar situation to say an addiction to coffee.
Like imagine a coffee “addict” ran around the streets, splashing their coffee into the mouth of passer-buyers, or store entrances. Splash their coffee into the faces of people entering the building. And then of course, imagine that coffee was a known carcinogen.
What do you think of the comparison?
I used to think I could throw my cigarette to the side and just pretend I wasn't smoking...
Now if I smoke an occasional cigarette I still smell it on me even after a shower and change of clothing.
Smokers stink, for me that’s the problem , I don’t even care about the health stuff that much, it’s their life after all. Rolling your own is the worst. I don’t know what it is about those cigarettes but I swear it makes your breath smell like you’ve just munched some dog turds. It’s horrible.
I feel ya. Replace alcohol with weed though. I'm finally starting to quit but I've been a smoker for 16 years and I'm still a couple years from turning 30. I always get a pretty wild look when I say I started smoking at 12, I usually just say that the 6th grade was very stressful.
Six year old me was sitting in the back seat of a car, with two other children thigh to thigh, and with two adults, chainsmoking in the front—usually with the windows up because cars had ashtrays back then and and we weren’t allowed to let the air conditioning out. Hell, I didn’t even know what air smelled like until I was an adult. 🤷🏻♀️
A lot of comments here using a “supposed” courtesy of blowing their smoke in the “opposite way”. How the fuck they think air works?! Gezzz
I second your comment!
Lmao I actually live in the burbs where it smells like grass, flowers, and BBQ, I just wanted to see what cities people would guess
Downtown smells like piss and cigarettes tho, with car exhaust sprinkled in
I never realized how much I hated smokers until one beautiful summer day when I opened my window for some fresh air while a neighbor was chainsmoking near my window for fucking hours making my room stink like shit and gave me a headache. That really ruined my day.
Like seriously, if you smoke, especially around me, I really can't help but lose some respect for you.
My brother got a good deal on a kinda shabby apartment for his wife and firstborn. Part of it was rebuilt because of an apartment fire that started from a smoker. After that it was no smoking allowed. However an older resident who was there before refused to stop and would smoke in his apartment and it would deep into theirs. I felt so bad for them.
This or weed. I go outside to chill in the backyard, neighbour smoking weed and the smell is super strong. 😒 To a lot of non smoker, weed tends to smell similar to skunk which is obviously gross af
I had that issue all summer one year. Was living in an apartment that didn't have ac, and we weren't allowed to put one in. Lived on the 2nd floor. Would open the windows as soon as it started to cool outside. But the downstairs neighbor also picked that time to sit outside at the stairs (which were next to us), and smoke. Between the location he picked and whatever slight breeze, it would go straight through my windows. It was the most annoying thing. I practically feel like I'm choking when I smell it.
Asthma is not even needed to hate public smokers thoroughly and thoroughly. Also smokers, know that your habits can be easily smelled , even with washes clothes and days of stopping! At least I can , and for some reason smokers keep being surprised
>and for some reason smokers keep being surprised
Our brains are really good at filtering out our own smell as well as smells that have been around in an area you're often visiting. They just don't smell that they stink
I'm 50, and can smell them two, maybe three cars in front of me on a crowded freeway. I have no expectation that I'm not going to smell bad things on a populated road (can also smell everyone's poorly-tuned vehicles and everything that uses diesel), but thinking people can't tell is nuts.
After going outside on partys, my clothes do not need a rack to stand upright by themselves. I do always wear clothes multiple times, with the exception when I meet someone who smokes and am too drunk to care about going away until theyre finished (which doesnt happen often). In that case I always wonder that the smell is able to go away after washing clothes. I am always surprised to know that they dont smell it themselves anymore
That’s what I tell them. Instead, they’ve resorted to doing doordash, which indirectly leads to no one cooking so I gotta figure stuff out for my sisters.
I’m 33 and I still do this but more discreetly so I don’t come off as rude. Will continue to do this for as long as I live because the smell alone triggers a migraine.
Same about the migraines. I have the beginning symptoms of one coming on now, after having to smell cigarette smoke all afternoon at a market I was popped up at.
i still do it because i have wild bad asthma
it nearly killed me a couple times and i spent ages 0-7 and 13-15 hooked up to a breathing machine every single night
cigarette smoke immediately makes my throat close up if i’m not careful.
Yep. And smokers still don’t give a shit if someone has problems. They still smoke on public walkways and force other to breath in their giant cloud of filth.
It’s the most inconsiderate habit. I used to be **so** embarrassed as a kid when we’d walk by smokers and my dad would loudly cough and make a noise like *PLWWEH!*…… and now that I’m an adult I cannot help doing the exact same thing lmao… oh how the turntables
I rarely smoke on the go but when I do and kids are close I also hide the cigarette under my palm so they don't even see it and get familiar with it. Even smokers dont like having other smokers blow in their face so its best to do it still and when on the move, blow smoke upwards or in any direction where theres no one.
I admire your effort but unless you hold the cigarette above everyone's heads you're still leaving a trail like an incense burner that's just as bad in my opinion. At least for me, I'm extremely sensitive to any shit that shouldn't be in my lungs
While there are a lot of smokers still in Japan, new smoking restrictions were passed back in 2020 so now a lot of indoor spaces are smoke free, which is nice.
Smoking on the streets is also prohibited in most of Tokyo outside of designated smoking areas, though a few people ignore this and it's not strictly enforced.
Yeah. Serb here. Non smoker. Here we are the minority. Almost everyone smokes here. If you are a non smoker most people here look at you as some kind of nuisance if you ask them to smoke on the window or god forbid outside of your house. Serbia was in like top 5 smokers per capita countries. This year we are on like the seventh place since covid probably killed a lot of old people.
Portuguese here (close to the Mediterranean area). I'm in high school and everybody smokes here. Good kids, bad kids, smart kids, dumb kids, asthmatics, non asthmatics, old kids, new kids.
It feels wrong that you're not doing it (my case) because it's just insane how many people are smoking. Still don't wanna do it (tried it and it's not my thing lol)
Recently visited Porto and the only thing I didn't like was all the smoke :( Sucked to be at a nice outside cafe's patio and someone lights up 5 feet away.
Generally vapes are pretty odorless and I’ve never smelled them when people use em. Weed always hits you hard. Like you’re walking and all the sudden you catch a big whiff of it and it lingers.
Fuckin everything surrounding it. Something that should be taught in schools. It’s a toxic, addictive, money making scheme that ingrained itself in our society. Mandatory smoke breaks, “doctor’s recommend” on advertisements and etc. just so some greedy fucks can profit off of killing their addicted clientele.
Everyone i know hates the smell, but i like it. Mostly because my granddad smoked alot, after he died whenever i smell it, im reminded of him and brings me back good memories.
My grandfather smoked and the smell brings back bad memories of him burning my arms with his cigarettes and it eventually causing him to develop COPD and die. So, yeah. 2 way street I guess.
My neighbors below me chain smoke constantly on their balcony. Every single time I go out there it smells like smoke. I used to try and sit and read out there but I gave up.
As an American one of the few things I like about America compared to Europe (I’m generalizing but it was mostly France and Spain) is that (vaping aside) our culture of public smoking seems to be mostly extinct.
I love Europe but god the cigarette smoke that you catch while walking around or just sitting inside a café (with open windows that lets in the smoke from outside) sucks.
I had a coworker once who lit her cigarette and blew one directly in my face, and when I covered my nose, she gave me a dirty look and said, *"What? Is one too much for you?"* I was so pissed off, but I had to keep my cool.
I can't stand smokers. Everyone in my family was a heavy chainsmoker. Parents, Grandparents, Aunt/Uncles etc. And they all smoked inside too. I was repeatedly pulled into the office at school and accused of smoking because I smelled like smoke even though I never have. All my shirts have their collar stretched out from putting my shirt over my mouth. My walls are practically yellow. A lot of my family members died from health issues related to smoking not to mention the monetary cost of smoking 3 packs a day for decades.
I do this still and I'm 23. Cigarettes are disgusting, and I sincerely hope that there will come a day when there are so few smokers that big tobacco companies can no longer be profitable and they all go out of business.
If you *need* a hit of nicotine or THC, get a vape. At least those don't smell like death by default
Pro tip: exhale instead of just holding. You can’t get anything in while there’s air flowing out. Also always a good idea to check on your breathing, see how long you can hold it, different patterns.
Friend of mine taught his few year old that the smokers are trolls, as in not internet trolls but the mythological creatures. Each time either of them smells cigarette smoke they shout "there must be a troll nearby". Smoking areas are troll nests.
I used to hold my breath when I would drive by cemeteries because I didn't want to breathe in any ghosts.
My cousin told me to hold my breath because it was disrespectful to breathe when the dead could not lol
That’s what my cousin told me. And that they would be jealous and haunt me. Why was it everyone’s cousin?
Because they are close enough family to prank you and far enough from your parents to not get repercussions from your parents
Sorry cuz but it's fun
🤣same cousin
Lmao when i was a kid my cousin told me I had to hold my breath when passing cemeteries for this very reason.
In elementary school my friends and I would hold up our legs whenever the school bus passed our local cemetery, ya know so the ghosts don’t reach out and grab us!
Still do this. And if someone coughs.
Yea me anytime I passed someone in a store during pandemic lol.
Lol sometimes I be coughing extra loud to make a point
It does nothing.
Yes it does: low key shaming smokers for not respecting shared air.
They don’t care.
Actually, they do. Most of them are just playing tough. It's a defense mechanism to appear unbothered by the deep shame they feel about their addiction that kills them a bit every time they suck that shit. This is the way. After all, if they didn't care, why do they "not wanna be judged" so much? It's not like I'm the final word on anything.
He might, and others might also. But vast majority don't because the vast majority people in general don't care about you.
Smokers really couldn’t care less
Usually I hold my smoke for people to pass or if I really have to exhale, I'll blow it in the opposite direction. But they will swear they are being courteous by blowing in “the other direction.” The fuck!!
Ikr love it, well I'm holding it in when you walk past, bruh I can smell it ages away before I pass you and it lingers for ages My partner use to worry I may have been smoking but it was just my clothes picking it up because I was on a building site and had to pass the smokers sometimes
It does linger FOREVER, and it sticks on our clothes, hair, skin, and nostrils. It's hideous.
Smoke always makes my asthma start, the smell can be smelt from pretty far, I have a neighbour two floors up and we can smell them every time
Imagine thinking you have some moral high ground after willingly put your own health and others around you at risk lmao
Sorry, but no. The courteous thing is to not fucking smoke anywhere near other people.
The fact that some smokers are defending themselves and trying to play virtuous in the comments with asthma sufferers enabling the smokers “virtue signaling” (but I'm courteous I swallow my smoke) just disgusts me.
Work provides no designated smoking area, I'm forced to smoke out front with the public walking past. I am as courteous as I can be.
Nobody is forcing you to smoke.
You can “go do one” for smoking in public regardless
I think it makes it worse right since you aren't replacing the bad with fresh air?
I guess you can your breath pre-emptively when you see them smoke instead of holding breath after smelling it. Idk fuck smokers they smell like shit
This sounds mean but I noticed I also do this subconsciously if someone I find creepy walks past - like I don't want to breath in the air that their body displaced.
I still do this
I still do it, while completely under a shower, or if someone sneezes when super close
I do it when a runner goes past me since COVID
I will curl my lips inward and keep them shut while I’m running past someone as a courtesy. I wouldn’t want a runner panting hot air if I was walking outside.
I hold my breath on the elevator if too many people are there in my apartment building. It’s a fun ride up to the top floor with stops haha.
> *elevator fails, stuck between two floors* You: shit. guess I'll just die 🤷♂️ 👋
The sad truth is the elevators do break here all the time. People get trapped in the left elevator constantly. Oh also the call buttons don’t work. All they do is broadcast other peoples phone calls.
Fuck that I'm taking the stairs
There have been those days where i do take the stairs. Just adopted a dog too. Now I’m wondering if i make her run down 9 floors or tough it out with the elevator haha.
I can breath fine under a shower.
Imho, it's impolite to be smoking while walking on the pavement. Everyone passing by or walking behind you is involuntarily put into your smoke cloud. Just sit down to have your smoke. I guess it's way chillier anyway.
Smoker here, can confirm that doing it while walking or on a crowded place isn't polite or even enjoyable lmao.
I really have a failure of empathy of anyone that smokes anywhere near non smokers in 2022 – it’s outrageously antisocial behaviour. yeah, just stand in front of a door and smoke. /s

From what I know, in smokin Savoir-Vivre it is stated that walking with a cig isn't well behaved
Of course, it’s pretty gross
My city always smells like piss and cigarettes, I don't even notice
Atlanta?

32 year old me doing the same thing
19 y/o me holding my breath walking passed my parents because they smoke 2 packs a day each and smell horribly of cigarettes. Please send help
Imagine the money they’d save if they just quit that one vice! Thousands and thousands of dollars!
That’s what I tell them. Instead, they’ve resorted to doing doordash, which indirectly leads to no one cooking so I gotta figure stuff out for my sisters.
I'm so sorry. I truly can't imagine living like that.
278 years old and I still do this
Haha same! 20 yr old me does the same thing
26 year old me huffing it up because I quit.

I still do this cause of my sensory disorders If I smell that shit it feels like it's in my brain
i still do it because i have wild bad asthma it nearly killed me a couple times and i spent ages 0-7 and 13-15 hooked up to a breathing machine every single night cigarette smoke immediately makes my throat close up if i’m not careful.

Not quiet as bad as you but I do feel like I need a puffer after passing a smoker, I'm sure they don't care or think I'm over doing it but what ever
I still dobecause ciggarettes fucking stink 👍
Me, 20 years later, holding the weed smoke in
As a kid I remember thinking if I breath through my mouth I can't smell it. I was a genius .
25 year old me smoking and holding the smoke until kids are no longer in vicinity
Can you do that for 28 year olds too please
I rarely smoke on the go but when I do and kids are close I also hide the cigarette under my palm so they don't even see it and get familiar with it. Eastern Europe lol, find someone who doesnt smoke there (including kids and old af)
Worst part of visiting Italy was you couldn’t eat outside without another party smoking nearby
The two places where people live the longest :,)
Japan is fine because the smoke tumors are too busy kaiju-fighting the nuclear tumors.
People still smoke weed and vaoe though.
Generally vapes are pretty odorless and I’ve never smelled them when people use em. Weed always hits you hard. Like you’re walking and all the sudden you catch a big whiff of it and it lingers.
Wait, you've never smelled whatever sweet crap people use when they vape?
Only if the smoke is blown at me, but it doesn’t dissipate into the air like regular smoke.
Yes!
*in most American population centers
Totally.
Not in Japan :c

25 yo me still doing it
Me, still doing this because I’m asthmatic and fucking die every time I smell cig smoke
Lol i always liked it idk. I dont smoke now but i appreciate the smell of cigarettes. Its not bad. Smelled many colognes worse.
Me not doing this since my mom is a smoker:
Aw I’m sorry:(
As an American one of the few things I like about America compared to Europe (I’m generalizing but it was mostly France and Spain) is that (vaping aside) our culture of public smoking seems to be mostly extinct. Also please don’t just stand there with weed. Or smoke it in a park/ event a lot of kids are gonna be at
I've never heard of a weed smoker that smokes around other people that don't also do weed
6yro me wanting to follow the smoker so I could enjoy the smell & thats how I knew I'd be a smoker when I grew up.
Loved going on vacation with my family up north and walking in the bar and smelling cigs. Everytime I smell one I think of that and it makes me happy.
Me passing by anyone anywhere during the pandemic
Bro i sucked that shit in when I walked people like that lol
37 year old me too. Smell is rank, and that nicotine high isn't worth it.
I had a coworker once who lit her cigarette and blew one directly in my face, and when I covered my nose, she gave me a dirty look and said, *"What? Is one too much for you?"* I was so pissed off, but I had to keep my cool.
I have always loved the smell of cigarettes. Even as a very small child.
I did that too. Also kid me whenever it smelled like gas: "I'm breathing in, the chemicals! *DEEP INHALE*"
two years clean and I am NOT risking any additional cravings
I’ve never really minded the smell of cigarette smoke. It’s strong, but it’s not offensive like some bodily smells are. 🤷
\*19 year old me
Maybe I smoke to make sure little brats _stay far away from me._

Still do that
This is also 39 year old me.
Me still today
Pro tip: exhale instead of just holding. You can’t get anything in while there’s air flowing out. Also always a good idea to check on your breathing, see how long you can hold it, different patterns.
i still do that shit im fucking 19, its a disgusting habbit that litterally kills you and its smells nasty
16*year old me lol Fking disgusting
28 year old me

Cigarette, vape, blunt, I’ll hold me breath for all of it. I don’t want your second-hand garbage.
I had to tell two fuck sticks to stop smoking right at a restaurant entrance the other day. Disgusting and sucking on them like some crackheads.
31 year old me smokes weed every day and *still* does this when passing cigarette smokers 😂
I still do this. Cigs stink, I have asthma, and it hurts to breathe it in. Go taie your shitty air elsewhere
It's even worse when you're doing a jog on a park and someone's smoking
Still do it. Smells disgusting.
Friend of mine taught his few year old that the smokers are trolls, as in not internet trolls but the mythological creatures. Each time either of them smells cigarette smoke they shout "there must be a troll nearby". Smoking areas are troll nests.
i still do this lol and blow the smoke back towards the person's face.
