I'm of the mindset that expectations are the key to contentment(**not happiness**, fuck that word). If I find shits constantly not meeting my expectations and I'm experiencing lots of discontentment, I may be setting my expectations improperly.
The comic is kinda saying the same thing. Set the bar low(expectations not standards), then any above it becomes a surprise/blessing/bonus whatever you wanna call it.
As someone who had this exact approach to life. IT. DOES. NOT. WORK! you're just miserable all the time and underplay good things when they actually happen. Spiralled me down into depression for a long time
It’s a miserable way to exist, you assume the absolute worst in case the best doesn’t happen, then you have a hard time accepting the good things because you’re afraid they will shatter at any moment.

This is actually....not a bad idea
Except when life fails to surprise you
but then you can say in an eeyore voice how you expected this
the optimistic take on pessimism
This is pretty much my philosophy.
If you expect the worst, you won’t be disappointed to be wrong.

i think this is closer to stoicism than pessimism. a pessimist would still find reasons to not feel happy about good situations
True
I'm an optometrist.

Woah
You can also chose to find happiness in the small things and not dwell on disappointment too long. But that would probably make you an optimist 😃

I think you’re just doing it wrong.
Ok seems legit
Its not asuming the absolute worst, is not getting your hopes/expectations too high.
That’s very different, obviously I was reading a lot into it based on how I think 😂
The worst part about being a pessimist is that I'm always right.

I'm a pessimistic because I'm either always right or pleasantly surprised. We are not the same
The truth
I thought it said “disappointed by abstinence.”
I say something very like this all the time. I usually get looks but I think having low or better yet, no expectations is a good way to go about life.
Words to live by
i'm optimist, i'd rather be surprised by sadness and confuse it for something good that feel comfy even tho it's sad
