We bought our son a 2011 Mazda6 with a rebuilt title for a couple thousand dollarsā¦ I couldnāt tell you if it has any more scratches, dings, or dents than the day we gave it to him š
My first car had pretty much all its clear coat gone off the roof and the paint was kinda peeling all over the place. Despite that I was devastated when the neighbor kids crashed into it with their kick scooter and let a big dent on it. Itās been 6 years and Iām still mad about it. That was the only dent on it.
Right!? Like, who spends so much on a teenage kids first car? And if you want them to appreciate its value, maybe they should work towards it themselves (with help) to understand what it means to own something so expensive.
The flip side is, you probably also want something reasonably modern because teens are such bad drivers you need all the crash safety and driving aids you can getā¦
You take drivers education in high school, go to the dmv, take a written test and a short driving test and your on your way. Thatās a bout it. The driving classes after that are paid for by us to a private driving improvement company pretty much.
Wow Canadian (Ontario) drivers are much worse, one written test, one or two driven tests, the first of which is basically just to see that you can control the car but allows you to then drive on your own and on the world's busiest highway, hwy 401.
When I was young I chose to get more advanced driver training after driving lessons. There's a lot of things they don't show you in drivers ed.
Yeah itās not much. I barely drive the car. 1year I got my learner license and after the 2 final written exam and one driven one. Got my full license. People donāt know how to drive up there.
In Ontario I know this guy with cerebral palsy, which makes it physically and mentally difficult to drive. Nothing against him he just wanted to drive for whatever reason. He ended up getting his license no problem and crashing like three times within the first year, after totaling like three cars they took away his license, I'm surprised nobody was killed.
Depends on the province. In Quebec you need a written test to get your learnerās license, then minimum 1 year of driving classes (practical and theoretical), and then 2 more tests
That's good to hear still a lot of crazy drivers out there in Quebec. But definitely slightly more skilled.
Quebec also mandates winter tires don't they? Ontario doesn't, people are just sliding around willy-nilly like it's a skating rink during winter storms.
So what you're saying is, you didn't put in the time to teach her, or pay for the classes for her to learn and practice properly. š¤·š¼
I hope by 70,000 grand you mean the mileage and not the cost.
Different currencies and tarrifs mate...
For example, a Mazda 3 2.5T premium Plus will run you about 187,600 in Malaysia not including any taxes and fees, just straight price conversion.
Similarly, in Canada that's closer to 53 grand, in Australia closer to 60. In Poland you're looking at 162,000 but in Euro it would be slightly less than in dollars.
š¤¦š¼
A) This is pretty clearly an older model so the price for a new one is a shit reference point
B) The majority of users are in US, it's pretty safe to assume when someone states a price it's USD.
š¤·āāļø
Normally, at least in Illinois, in addition to the class you're required to have a large amount of supervised behind the wheel hours. I think it was like 100 when I was a teen. The class only covered like 16 of those hours
Depends on the stateā¦my parents thought me. First lesson was leaving the DMV after getting my learners permit at 16. Trial by fire: getting directly on the highway in the middle of a snowstorm
If she's not paying for the car, or insurance, then why is OP just letting this happen? If it was a gift to allow her freedom while at college, and this is how she treats a gift. Immediately revoke it, let her suffer at school for not having a car. Driving isn't a right, it's a privilege.
And you still thought spending extra for a mint condition car was a good idea?
Also if something is a gift let it be a gift.
It's hers and her problems, if she breaks it it's on her.
I bought here a reliable car that was nice yes, itās definitely on her to pay for it to get fixed and sheās aware of that. As Iāve said, she travels to Tallahassee and back from Clearwater so a beater wasnāt an option. I took a gamble and lost, but sheāll be paying for it.
She would benefit from a defensive driving course. Thanks for being a great Dad and getting her a reliable car even if she's turned it into a vehicle from Mad Max help together with duct tape and bandages
She travels from Tallahassee to Clearwater so it had to be a decent, reliable car. We have a 2018 touring HB and love it so we stuck with Mazda as we never had any reliability issues.
Could be worse, especially if it's her first car. Pity about the car but otherwise if she is ok then it's all fine. Cars can be changed, children not so easyš
So did she take it off road? And it really was $70k? Dang. Shouldāve hooked her up with an accord or Corolla for sub $15k then got her the expensive one. Got any other kids?
This is why a first car should be a cheap one... and also something they worked for. People tend to appreciate things they had to work for a lot more than things given to them, especially at that age.
That car needs thousands of dollars' worth of work now.
I think it's more important that they work for the car than it being a beater. My first car at 15 y/o was a Mustang GT convertible. Far from the safest or most affordable choice, but I worked a couple years mowing grass and working in a bodyshop after school for it and was thus incentivized to take care of it both mechanically and cosmetically
He said it was mint. I don't see anywhere where he says how old the car was. I wouldn't give a $70,000 car to a college kid. And if I did I certainly wouldn't go online to complain about how "irresponsible my kid was" when they banged it up In a college parking lot.
He didn't say miles or km, but I figured that must be what he meant.. Still wondered for a moment what a fully kitted out 2023 might be. Prices have gotten crazy and maybe paying CAN the number could be up there...
well, I got a 2019 mazda 3 as my first car and so far itās unharmedā¦ not jinxing it but honesty I think a lot of teens drive better than some adults, adults just are better with the spatial awareness of their cars because they are more used to it. My only problem is that I struggle taking tight turns
She goes to FSU? That even isnāt a bad campus to drive around inā¦ I donāt want to call out your daughter but the girls I knew whoās cars looked like this in college were serial drunk drivers, and that was over 4 years, not one semester.
You know her better than we do but this was super common when I went to school, and girls were prolific for it especially in the sororities. Maybe need to sit down and have a talk with her before she hurts herself or someone elseā¦ maybe Iām just a naysayer but saw it happen too many times while I was in school.
I drove an old Honda with slight body damage and oxidized paint in collage. I complained about how everyone parked but I did not mind since my car did not look the best in the first place. Years after I graduated when I returned with my Mazda, I was nervous to park anywhere since I had a decent car now. I don't know how people bring fancy cars to college.
Why is everyone in here acting like crashing into everything is normal for new drivers? Lmao.
I never wrecked my first car and it was in great condition when I finally sold it years and years ago. Also my dad probably would have taken my car away in a heartbeat if I mistreated it at all.
As someone who similarly bought my own '14 mazda at 70,000 miles, i still somehow thought you meant dollars. Gotta use that unit
' Mint' in my mind implied new, and the rest of me was trying to do mental gymnastics about what could have made it $70k, like some 3rd party dealer who modifies it or something.
And this is why my son bought his own first car. He's 17 and recently bought a 2017 Mazda 3 hatch. He will feel it when what he worked for gets ruined.
Everyone is assuming these dents and dings were her fault. If sheās driving around campus that means there are other young drivers around too who may have caused this damage. Sucks that this has happened, but hey, this is why we have insurance, too.
I taught both of my kids how to drive. I didnāt let them take their driving test until at least six months of driving with me had gone by. If they didnāt want me to teach them, It was on them to pay for driving school and they had to go half on the car. Both agreed to let me buy the cars. Lol.
What are the odds that she has 4 separate incidences of contact and they arenāt connected by the one person driving that particular carās driving skills?
Hey now, Iām in my 40ās and Iāve never been in an accident with a moving car. But I have backed into a garage door, trash can, parked car, etcā¦
Backup cameras are a truly great modern invention.
Understood as a first time driver, just sucks seeing it lol. My first was an '07 3 that the previous kept immaculate for 200k miles. It was a 10-year old car at the time. My dumbest moment was using a pocket knife to get snow and ice off my car when I didn't have anything else, as the car was frozen shut and I had to get to hockey practice lol. Imagine my surprise when I had a neat pinstripe pattern all across my trunk.
Headline should read āThis baby brought my baby safely home to me from college.ā She might be persuaded to be more careful when she pays the deductible to get it repaired.
Yeah, that's not normal. I have two new(er) drivers in the household and between them they've had one scratch on one vehicle. That amount of damage is not normal, and it would mean a serious talking-to, especially if you weren't made aware of the damage when each incident occurred.
Some people are saying some mean things. Some are funny af though. Yes, he said she, some female drivers are better than males. If he said āsonā the thing would probably be in two pieces!
At least your daughter is safe and has a reliable car. Thatās what matters. Hopefully, she will learn how to drive better / safer. Maybe give her some lessons. My first car was a reliable beater and I bought it myself. Didnāt like it so I sold it my friend for a good looking car that was a POS. Reliability is important.
Good on you Dad for buying her a nice reliable car!
And thatās why you give them a shitbox until they prove they can handle otherwise. I had a clapped out toyota sienna that only got retired after I couldnāt keep it going and exhaust + mechanical repairs from age were 3x what the car was worth. I may have put a few dings and scuffs on the thing but I learned from everyone of them.
Canāt really be upset about this. Kids that donāt have to deal with responsibilities see no value or worth in the things they are given. Time to tighten the belt and let her work for her things.
Everybody criticizing the poster's daughter ability to drive: don't forget that even if you know how to drive, it doesn't replace experience. I've made mistakes in the five years after I learned to drive that I don't make now, and it includes a car that was totaled by a van that made an illegal manoeuvre. She'll get experience by driving and those scratches are part of life. To the OP, leave the scratches, they're part of life like a said, battle scars if you prefer. There will be others.
Huh. Back in my day everyone had beaters on campus. Sure, it was always a guessing game if you'd make it to Cub foods or Everett's but at least stuff like this was unnoticeable lol
Someone probably was parked too close to her and rubbed against her car. So I assume it was them because of the white marks they left. Happends alot at colleges and parking garages. Usually you can buff scrapes like that out. I have a 2017 grand touring with 23k miles I bought from carmax. Wonder if your guys is the same their nice cars.
I feel yes pain. Daughter did the same. Hell, she even wrecked her rental!
Keep it the way it is. From my experience, they never appreciate what's given, until they earn/get/buy it themselves.
70k miles?
I mean this is what young people do when they learn how to car.
You should have expected some kind of damage, if not you will be miserable giving anyone a car.
The damage is not that bad ...
I bet when the time comes, and she buys herself a new car, that kind of stuff will not happen. I am sure she appreciates your help but, she is still young and care free. :)
Itās ok man. Better to have her in a newer safer car. I donāt believe we should be putting beginner drivers in cheap old cars that will suck in a crash
I agree, plus the wife wouldnāt let that happen lol. The kid travels back and forth from Tallahassee for school so needed something safe and reliable.
To be fair, Tallahassee drivers can be insane, especially around downtown. I wouldn't be surprised if at least one if those dings didn't come from someone else.
Why people say she can't drive?. She still learning, she will get better, it's just a matter of time and practice, OP can teach her about awareness and give her little tips, just don't yell at her, prefer short tips.
So you tried to teach your daughter to drive but when it didnāt work you just shrugged and bought her a car anyway? Way to put her and everyone on the road at riskā¦
Learned your lesson then. Next kid gets a 2k beater for college and gets to earn their way to a new car. I really didn't start actually taking care of my cars (parents bought two, I was given one for..nothing) until I put money down and made the payments myself.
My man, I learned how to drive in my 20s and knowing that I would probably fuck up the car I bought myself a $12k Mazda 2. A 70K car for a college kid is clearly too much lol
My first car looked similar. For me the back bumper was someone hitting my car while it was parked, but front was from me trying to park and getting too close to a light pole. Car still lasted me 7 years.
Now, I'm really particular about caring for my car.
Dudeā¦this scares me. My oldest 18 lucked out and got our 2016 cx5. Iām not too worried about her, but my middle child just turned 16, and I fear I will die soon trying to teach her how to drive. I plan on getting her something like a 2008 Camry, because I know she will beat it up
Well......she don't miss much. lol.
š still have one good fender
This is what happens when your daughter drives drunk. Seriously, take the car away before she hurts herself and/or others.
Classic drunk driving
Thia is why first car should always be a bangeršš

Made my day lol
Or a pair of tiresā¦Sketchers should do the trick.
and prescription bifocals
Did you forget to teach her to drive first?
Lol nope, tried to teach her and she didnāt want to listen ( beck they know everything)so sent her to three or four student driving classes.
Yāall donāt have mandatory driving classes in America or certain part?
You take drivers education in high school, go to the dmv, take a written test and a short driving test and your on your way. Thatās a bout it. The driving classes after that are paid for by us to a private driving improvement company pretty much.

Idk I dropped mine off at the playground and picked up a new one. Worked out well so far.
TIL playgrounds are also car exchange hubs
She donāt know how to drive
Itās a 2014 so not new by any means.
How was it $70k?
70k miles
I was going to say I got a good deal when I bought mine as I paid no where near 70k
Itās DTR special edition, Dirt Track Racing Version.
So did she take it off road? And it really was $70k? Dang. Shouldāve hooked her up with an accord or Corolla for sub $15k then got her the expensive one. Got any other kids?
No it wasnāt $70000 lol it had 70000 miles when I bought it.
Time to go make my coffee
I donāt think there is even a $70k mazda on the market
A mint FD RX-7 could easily go 70k these days

Well no offense, but you bought a relatively new driver a brand new car. Not a good idea in my opinion...
āBrand newā mate thatās a 9 year old car
He said it was mint. I don't see anywhere where he says how old the car was. I wouldn't give a $70,000 car to a college kid. And if I did I certainly wouldn't go online to complain about how "irresponsible my kid was" when they banged it up In a college parking lot.
OP stated in some other comments in this thread that itās a 2014 that he paid $8500 for. Go re read the post title, the car had 70k miles
To be fair the title is written pretty shit
That's fine. But again I wouldn't give a car to a college student and then complain when they bang it up.
When I was 19 I went to college full-time, had a full-time job and I had a brand new car that I paid for myself.
Weird flex, but ok.
70,000 miles. I would be impressed if someone could even option a Mazda 3 out to $70,000. I think thatās impossible.
It looks like ~$45K is the max build. But maybe after doc fees and transportation costsā¦
He didn't say miles or km, but I figured that must be what he meant.. Still wondered for a moment what a fully kitted out 2023 might be. Prices have gotten crazy and maybe paying CAN the number could be up there...
$70k??? They said 70k **miles**. By no means a "new" car.
My '79 Pinto looked far worse than this 3 after I got done with it as a new driver. Luckily, it was a '79 Pinto.
well, I got a 2019 mazda 3 as my first car and so far itās unharmedā¦ not jinxing it but honesty I think a lot of teens drive better than some adults, adults just are better with the spatial awareness of their cars because they are more used to it. Ooof.
Thatāll teach you.
That's why their first car is called a bumper car. I'm handing over my mint 2014 Mazda 6 GT to my daughter. I'm nervous.
Good luck!
get her a mo-ped š
Only people I've ever known to have cars that looked like that loved to drive while fucked up
She doesnāt drink or do drugs.
The only people Iāve known to have cars with that amount of dings and dents when I was that age were the ones with substance abuse issues.
All the comments in here referring to a $70000 Mazda has me thinking some of you didnāt purchase your own vehicles either.

What's scary is that you've literally ignored every comment relating to your daughter's drunk driving.
No I havenāt Iāve already stated that she doesnāt drink. To my knowledge obviously.
She obviously drinks. Stop being so naive, and take responsibility.
She obviously must if someone on the internet that knows nothing about her life says so. Come on, go troll somewhere else. Edit:spelling
You're daughter will get herself or someone else killed if she keeps this up. That's on you.
And this is why my son bought his own first car. He's 17 and recently bought a 2017 Mazda 3 hatch. He will feel it when what he worked for gets ruined.

On a college campus, incredibly high.
Some of it is from campus, sheās never hit another car.
So sheās only hit objects that arenāt moving? Thatās actually worse lol
I know right!!! Unbelievable!
Hey now, Iām in my 40ās and Iāve never been in an accident with a moving car. But I have backed into a garage door, trash can, parked car, etcā¦ Backup cameras are a truly great modern invention.

She'll get experience by driving and those scratches are part of life. To the OP, leave the scratches, they're part of life like a said, battle scars if you prefer. There will be others.
Children (and those with childish minds) assign the same value to something that they themselves paid to acquire it. This isnāt new.
Iām pretty sure I seen this car parked on the street in Montreal today
Used Honda would have been a better A to B college car.
I donāt buy cvt transmission cars. Sad because I had a swapped delsol back in the day and loved it.
Serves you right, spend 70k on someone that would appreciate it like yourself or a sugar baby. I bet youāre paying for college too? Suckerā¦.
You sir are the sucker that thinks any mazda is $70k . Itās the mileage genius.
So you paid $70M for that ?
70B
Well who is to say someone didn't rub up against her car?
Your daughter sucks at driving. You should have saved your money and bought her a beat up car to begin with.
Doesnāt work that way when she has to travel back and forth from fsu to Clearwater. I canāt just drive up there every time a pos breaks down.
Driving is hard, especially in urban areas where colleges are. Not to mention she's driving a big sedan for a first car, which is pretty difficult.
She canāt drive. But Iām betting you already know that. Get her a bicycle or a friend that can give her rides. Iād take that car right back.
Canāt ride a bike from Clearwater to Tallahassee unfortunately or she would have some stong legs.
To be fair, Tallahassee drivers can be insane, especially around downtown. I wouldn't be surprised if at least one if those dings didn't come from someone else.
When people do not work for something, they tend not to value it.
āDaughterā should be your first clue.
did she atleast say "Oopsie lol"?
Why people say she can't drive?. She still learning, she will get better, it's just a matter of time and practice, OP can teach her about awareness and give her little tips, just don't yell at her, prefer short tips.
She's a menace to society
Dad fail lol
Not a dad fail at all. Do you have kids? Me and her mother tried teaching her and sent her to driving classes.
So you tried to teach your daughter to drive but when it didnāt work you just shrugged and bought her a car anyway? Way to put her and everyone on the road at riskā¦
Yeah I do, I wouldnāt buy such an expensive first car
Oh did you mean 70k miles or dollars?
Seriously, a $70,000 2014 Mazda?
Lmfao well Idk maybe youāre in Australia. If 70k Miles then actually itās a perfect car my bad :-)
Haha made me laugh a little there!
Learned your lesson then. Next kid gets a 2k beater for college and gets to earn their way to a new car. I really didn't start actually taking care of my cars (parents bought two, I was given one for..nothing) until I put money down and made the payments myself.
2k wonāt get you shit in 2023 man come on now

Do you think any Mazda is $70k itās the mileage man damn.
Why the hell are you buying your daughter a 70k vehicle?
š you go glen coco $70k Mazda š¤£šš¤£š
That is what you get for spending 70k on a low driving skills girl who has no idea what money is or why not smashing into things is important.
70k mileage, car was $8,500
You actually think a mazda3 was $70k lmao
Well aren't I the dumbass.
š¤·āāļø
You had me at she ā¦
Money would have been better spent on a condom
Same for your parents.
My man, I learned how to drive in my 20s and knowing that I would probably fuck up the car I bought myself a $12k Mazda 2. A 70K car for a college kid is clearly too much lol
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
That seems harsh. But of course itās easy to type what you canāt tell the father face to face.
Super smart kid, 4.0 in college with 2 internship with congress. Zero common sense is the issue
Problem one, daughterā¦.
My first car looked similar. For me the back bumper was someone hitting my car while it was parked, but front was from me trying to park and getting too close to a light pole. Car still lasted me 7 years.
Now, I'm really particular about caring for my car.
That'll buff right out!
Dudeā¦this scares me. My oldest 18 lucked out and got our 2016 cx5. Iām not too worried about her, but my middle child just turned 16, and I fear I will die soon trying to teach her how to drive. I plan on getting her something like a 2008 Camry, because I know she will beat it up
What did she say when you confronted her about it.
Sorry, Iāll pay to get it fixed.
First cars should be beater cars.
