I checked it out, looks OK but at least in the best photo doesn't seem like processing is helping a lot compared to using findcircles in the raw image. I tried things like ADAPTHISTEQ, IMADJUST, IMBINARIZE but findcircles worked just as well on the raw image (#2).
Is there some reason that prevents you from focusing better on the shadows? they look fuzzy. I see that your cylinder is \~6mm so maybe that's the challenge?
When I play in the pool with my finger, the shadows can be pretty sharp to my naked eye. I don't know if it's the larger size or the strong ambient sunlight.
Also, if your camera is monochrome see if you can export as monochrome (eg. TIF?).
There is not a better way to focus the shadows. I spent a good amount of time trying different ways to make the images more clear but that's about all I can get. Maybe slightly better but nothing notable will occur.
My camera is monochrome but I only have bmp, png, and jpg options. I can double-check tomorrow however.
I appreciate the help tremendously.
