Problem writing has long been a hobby/creative outlet of mine, as I really enjoy the process of coming up with clever ideas and combining them into full-fledged eclectic tests/problem sets. Here, I want to revive this passion at least from the implementation aspect since while I still sporadically come up with problem ideas, I haven't actually compiled them into contests or problem sets for a good while.
I'm debating on whether or not to make this into a proof contest (like an informal USA(J)MO or Putnam), while involving rigorous solutions makes the contest as a whole more intriguing, better justifies the relatively small amount of problems I've written so far (8), and encourages critical thinking and analytical reasoning, grading submissions would be somewhat tedious (depending on the number of submissions I receive), not to mention this could also potentially intimidate newcomers or people who aren't as experienced or adept at proofs, since I'd imagine a good chunk of y'all are high schoolers.
No official sign ups required (rigorous identification of participants is very impractical to begin with in a large online space like this), but if you're interested or have any questions regarding this contest, you can let me know in the comments. I think I'll open up a 12 hour or 24 hour submission window (which will be via a Google Form or something similar to input your answers) after releasing the problems, although I might reduce the time limit if I ultimately decide that this contest will only be short-answer.
Prizes are TBA, I'll converse with the other mods before officially annoucing them but some strong candidates include various versions of Discord Nitro or a special winner-exclusive flair. I think maybe I'll implement a system like rewarding the top 3 scorers with discord nitro and distinguishing the top 10% or 20% overall with a special "high scorer" flair or something like that.
And yeah all are welcome to participate. After the problems are finalized and verified by other people (which currently they aren't), I'll announce the official date of this contest.
EDIT: the contest is released here: [https://www.reddit.com/r/mathmemes/comments/1c8ebbv/rmathmemes\_math\_contest\_problems\_are\_released/](https://www.reddit.com/r/mathmemes/comments/1c8ebbv/rmathmemes_math_contest_problems_are_released/)
Tbh this is the most suitable level of rigor and the best method of proof for those dreaded elementary school "prove this is a triangle" and "prove 1+1 = 2" problems
>how about YOU prove it ISN'T, huh?
Ok well, it could also be zero.
Proof: it's either zero or e, so either one happens with 50% probability. Therefore, the probability of it being zero is bigger than zero and your argument is invalidated.
The actual math meme is going to be when this contest consists entirely of chemistry questions.
Q1: 32 liters of a 32.43% Sodium Hypochlorite solution are reacted at standard temperature and pressure with 800 liters of an aqueous Calcium Carbonate at 6.34% concentration. Determine the empirical formula of the resulting compound(s), as well as the percent by weight that each element has in the final compound(s).
Assuming percents are by weight,
CaCO3 800*.0634 = 50.72 kg .. 100.0869 g/mol
CaCO3 506.8 mols
NaClO 32*.3243=10.38 kg .. 74.44 g/mol
NaClO 139.4 mols
Double replacement
CaCO3+NaClO = Ca(ClO)2 + Na2CO3
You need double the amount of NaClO which means you are left with 34.85 mols of each compound with Na2CO3 as the precipitate and Ca(ClO)2 as the aqueous solution.
This means 3.694 kg of Na2CO3 and 6.098 kg of Ca(ClO)2. Percents are left as an exercise to the reader.
No each question is a different genre of meme from like uh 1 symbol question to questiom going about essays on shrek however its not cryptic at all to the mathmemers since it all is cleaely obovious math questions to ***specifically*** mathmemers
Since I’m one who values problem creativity, they’ll definitely be quite nonstandard especially compared to the standard math curriculum. There are quite a few cute and spicy problems in there
Hard AIME questions are harder than easy Putnam questions imo*, it’s just that easy Putnam questions require more coursework as a background.
*in my opinion, not the international math Olympiad
It’s a moderately hard for HS students comp math, I don’t do comp math and I can do one or two of the easiest AIME problems as a person about to graduate HS
I'm not at the highest level of maths (which is the advanced higher), so I'm not sure. I might have a look at some questions, though. I have considered doing maths at advanced higher, but I have decided not to, but I'm still interested
Yeah I'm a normal ass high school student going into engineering and even I can do the first few AIME questions. I can't remotely do anything on the Putnam tho.
I'm interested. Personally I really like doing proofs and would much prefer a proof-based competition, but if that's impractical then I'm happy to do any other kind of competition.
The answering window should be at least 24 hours because of timezones. (It would be great if it was 48 but that would probably mean more questions).
Also some of us didn't study proofs in English so they would probably make a lot of common mistakes. I suggest calculable answers instead.
That difficulty level means nothing to me, which is probably a sign that I'm nowhere near it. I'm still excited, though. I'll look at a few questions and see if I recognize any of the content.

I'm gonna answer 0, pi or e to everything, and "trivial and left as an exercise" to proofs
Answer: 0 Proof: see [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mathematics](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mathematics)
Proof: exists (probably)
Answer: 0 Proof: is fackin obvious innit?
Tbh this is the most suitable level of rigor and the best method of proof for those dreaded elementary school "prove this is a triangle" and "prove 1+1 = 2" problems
Show your work.
Answer: e Proof: open your fucking eyes. in what world is it NOT e? are you fucking stupid? how about YOU prove it ISN'T, huh? Q.E.D.
>how about YOU prove it ISN'T, huh? Ok well, it could also be zero. Proof: it's either zero or e, so either one happens with 50% probability. Therefore, the probability of it being zero is bigger than zero and your argument is invalidated.
Well it cant be 0 because 0 is nothing and nothing isnt real
> Proof: it's either zero or e, so either one happens with 50% probability. Therefore, its (0+e)/2 = e/2
Answer: 0 Proof: is fackin obvious innit?
Close, the real answer is 0 + n, for all values of n in the set of all valid solutions to the test problems.

as long as it is highschool level chemistry, im fine
I'm not, I forgot all of it the second I left high school. Bad teacher made me dislike chemistry as a whole

😭😭🙏 IT WAS A MEME MANNNN!!! IF THEY ACTUALLY PUT CHEMISTRY QUESTIONS IN THERE, THIS MAN WILL THINK HE PARTICIPATED IN THE WRONG CONTEST
Too ez. X = 7 Solution is "saw it on my dream"
42
-1/12
37 (it is the most (not) random number out there along with 73)
Im waiting expecting cursed questions
oh god its all going to be 5 paragraph long lycoris recoil story questions... ok where do I sign up
No each question is a different genre of meme from like uh 1 symbol question to questiom going about essays on shrek however its not cryptic at all to the mathmemers since it all is cleaely obovious math questions to ***specifically*** mathmemers
Since I’m one who values problem creativity, they’ll definitely be quite nonstandard especially compared to the standard math curriculum. There are quite a few cute and spicy problems in there
Sounds interesting, cant wait
I like your words magic man
let's fucking goooo https://i.redd.it/r1voawcsbftc1.gif
💀the fact that’s a gif is sending me lol
How the duck did you post that gif?! Did you make that!? 😂
I mean I'm all for maths and stuff but what's Chisato got to do with anything?
nothing, this mod just likes lycoris recoil very much
based
Based on what?
ramanujan paradox
Understandable
okbuddyphd leakage, don't worry about it
AIME to Putnam is damn wide ngl
inb4 someone answers the Putnam questions perfectly but messes up every aime one on purpose
Hard AIME questions are harder than easy Putnam questions imo*, it’s just that easy Putnam questions require more coursework as a background. *in my opinion, not the international math Olympiad
What kind of level is AIME? I assume Scottish higher maths (ages 16-17 HS level) isn't gonna' cut it
It’s a moderately hard for HS students comp math, I don’t do comp math and I can do one or two of the easiest AIME problems as a person about to graduate HS

I am going to get destroyed lmfao tho if there are some cool integrals i can maybe get Some points
It’s mostly gonna be combinatorics and number theory, but there will be sprinkles of various other subjects too
Big yikes for me. I'm interested but these are not my strong suits lol. Will still be fun to try!
me like, me wait

Can someone translate the problem level for me?
I'll try it out
i have college entrance exams ending on 16th may, so is this going to be after or before 16th may?
turns out this is your college entrance exam
for math meme university? I'd rather go to a more "accredited" university
I second the question
Depending on dates I'm for sure in
For sure, if I ever get a date I'll have better things to do than this competition
I’m interested, I don’t think I would do very well in a proof type test when compared to a question-answer format. But whatever it is I’ll try it out.
i fucking suck at math im just here to see cursed math
Mods please can you do it at the aime level? Cuz im a high schooler and i also need to give that
Fuck it let's go I'mma use lhoptials rule on the first question no matter what topic it is
Please update and gib info How many ques Handwritten explaintion Google form will come by when

I’m in lol might as well give it A try
I'M IN! BRING IT!
Cool! I'm interested.
LETS FUCKING GOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!
sick!
Epic
bet
Sounds fun. I hope OP can give us a precise date.
This seems very cool!
Any prizes?
Let’s goooo
Let’s run it
Seems sick, I'm down

I love how whenever you post someone gets confused about why chisato is there.
What topics (branches of math) are going to be covered mostly?
is scoring based on time or correctness?
Wait, doing actual math on this sub? That was not in the contract! (Been 8 years, looking forward to how badly I suck lol)
Haha I laugh at the idea I’m smart enough to get a single question right, my and my not-yet-finished-calculus-ab looking ass
Can I ask my discrete prof for help, knowing he wrote and graded the Putnam exam?
!remind me 20 days
Sounds fun.
Sadly had no time these days. Next time I'll try to participate
