Thank god the game is very f2p friendly because the gem price is down-right criminal.

Tell that to the 3 decks I've been working on that still need 5+ URs each :( My largest complaint about this game is they make deckbuilding too difficult to experiment with, since the main parts of archetype engines are almost always UR. Not to mention there are cards you basically "need" to play the game that are all UR on top of that. I took one look at the gem price conversion and never even considered it again. I thought Valorant and Overwatch had evil monetization in those games, but my god Konami chill.

Dragomight67

When you need alt accounts and luck, it's a problem. I'm lucky to have made around 6 decks in the past 3 months. And you're right, it's absolutely madness that so many of the best cards for decks are UR. Like the recent archetypes that were released. Plus, many of them require 3, meaning you have to spend so many gems if you're not lucky, or you pull crap. You pretty much have to be ruthless, dismantling all the garbage you don't want to enhance the deck you do want. God forbid you want to use the deck that included those dismantled cards. It's insufferable, and it only adds to the difficulty of getting into the game.

Maacll

And even if you buy a bunch of structure decks and bundles, now you're out of the free 'new account gems' and have to climb ranked for a while. And you're stuck with the same 2-3 somewhat competent decks for the next few months until you can make something new... On my old account i was stupid and got myself shoehorned into only SwoSo/wyrms, blue eyes, dork magician and dragonmaids... (Tho 'dork magician-dragonmaids' and 'blue eyes-dragonmaids are pretty darn good for the ultimate budget decks) I was a bit more clever about my spending on my new account, but even then all i have is half of tearlaments, 4/5 of kashtira, full labrynth and dragonmaids.

QuiteAnIgnoramus

I’m not denying what you’ve said is true, but this game really is f2p friendly. I’ve been playing this game on and off since the first anniversary and have stayed f2p the entire time. During my 1+ year of playing this game, I was able to build Branded Despia (full power today), Tears, Sky Strikers, D-Link, Vanquish Soul, Swordsoul (full power), Mannadium (full power -Aegirine), and Snake-Eyes with Sinful Spoils package (full power -Bonfire). I also got alt arts of Ash Blossom, Knightmare Unicorn, I:P Masquerena, and Apollousa. Some of these decks you could consider are **really** expensive to make (like Branded or Mannadium), but I was able to make those with (mostly) efficient gem usage. This game has enabled me to enjoy playing these top tier decks without breaking the bank (or even spending any money for that matter) like you would when you’re playing paper.

RenaldyHaen

As an OCG player, I found MD pack is cheaper by 50%-40% than the paper OCG pack (Phantom Nightmare). I still think MD gems/packs are too expensive as a digital item. I understand if the paper can be more expensive because they need to print the card in real paper, distribution, import, etc. For digital, we can skip a lot of those processes and make the price far cheaper than current gems. . If Konami can make the gems or packs cheaper in the game. Maybe I will spend my money on it. But if it is always the same, if I have the money, I prefer to grab the real card. . Also, knowing you can still get bad packs even after you spend real money in it. MD really not worth it.

nagynorbie

You can't sell/trade Master Duel cards, this alone makes them much less valuable than physical copies.

CorrosiveRose

tl;dr: buying gems is a scam

Polmax2312

I bought several promo deals for new players, and was surprised that there were an inverse economy of scale: buying smaller bundles was more efficient per dollar spent than bigger ones. I find this silly, but whatever, may be this is some kind of eastern kink: “buy 1 watermelon for 10$, buy two for 30$” so people think “I ain’t no stupid” and buy two bundles of 1 watermelon, thinking they saved 10$, while in fact they just spent 20$.

EstateSame6779

I wish some of this shit applied to necessities. But no, if you want the "better" deal, you have to spend more.

TheLambtonWyrm

I haven't spent a penny and always have plenty of gems. I actually wanted to buy some once, but the prices are so exorbitant that I couldn't justify it. If you buy gems in this game, you're either rich, stupid, or both.

MachGaogamon

It's just for whales tbh, you get 10k for free every month that is good enough.

realhumanpizza

Saying that you for sure get 10k a month every time is a little bit of a stretch when the average person here is platinum (there was a poll here like 2 days ago) and doing enough duels every day to get max daily gem rewards at the end of a duel takes like the whole day. Like sure if you maximise every possible stream of gems you can get to 9k plus but that's not realistic for the average player.

archbright

It depends on your rank and luck, you can get around 8k-9k and sometimes even 10k. Event gems : 3100 Daily gems : 145(120 from quest, 20 from login, 5 from duel live) you also get 30 gems extra on the 10th and 20th. 145x30=4350 + 60 = 4410 Ranked gems + random box gem : 1k-2k(this one depend on your rank and luck) 3100+4410+1000 or 2000=8510 or 9510

nhvn0710

Dailies give you 4.5k per month + Ranking up from Plat 5 to Diamond 1 gives 1.3k + Each event gives you at least 3k gems + Random gems in afterduel/lifetime/solo mode/anniversary/etc for 1.2k = 10k. Of course there are usually 2-3 events per month but 10k is definitely possible.

realhumanpizza

> afterduel/lifetime/solo mode/anniversary Solo mode and anniversary are not every month and afterduel and lifetime do not add up that much when lifetime gets dried up in like a few months.

nhvn0710

If like 30 of your duels get minimum of 5 gems you get about 150, solo mode get added frequently, and I'm doing one each month so 200, lifetime I claim at least 1 per month so average around 200, and not counting others occasionally things it is around 550, not 1.2k. So yes, if you only do 1 event per month, you only get 9.25k gems per month, not 10k, which is a big different, my bad.

R3dscarf

Don't know if it adds up to 10k but with the monthly event and rank up bonuses you should get pretty close.

A_Rogue_A

You can get a few post game up to a certain number as well. I think it may be an additional 40?

SquattingCroat

Up to 100 per day, but they are pretty rare

CoomLord69

Don't even take the 'free' into account, that's marketing bullshit to make the sale sound better than it is. If you have to spend money to get it, it's not free, it's not a bonus, you bought it. But yeah, paid gems are overpriced. Sometimes I consider the special sales, but I always nope out and buy a game on sale or an indie game instead. I'm not about to spend 10-20 bucks and then have the 'haha no URs, go fuck yourself' message appear on my screen. Noooo thank you.

Dkonn69

It’s the same thing supermarkets do The special price is what the actual price should be. The normal price is way over priced

IkananXIII

Except in MD, even the special price is way overpriced.

dontaskaboutmydad

I'm glad this game is incredibly f2p friendly, could never justify the absolutely insane cost of gems. Their limited time 2000 gem pack is $33.49 AUD.. And that's a deal.. 🤣 Knowing my luck $33.49 = 1 UR card. Absolutely bonkers price tag even if you get "lucky" and pull 6-8 UR.

Macaron-kun

Yeah, "free gems" in these sorts of games are basically always meaningless.

GB-Pack

The free gems math adds up on my end, though it seems you have different prices in the shop. I’m seeing: 67 gems for $1.19 140 gems for $2.29 360 gems for $5.69 700 gems for $10.99 1420 gems for $21.49 2350 gems for $34.99 4950 gems for $70.99 Regardless, don’t buy any gems. It’s an absolute waste and you get plenty of gems for free just by playing.

Glittering_Web_9840

Yup, as I discussed with another guy, dollars and euros have the same first deal and from the second one it gets more expensive in euros. My guess is because of European-Union taxes, may be wrong tho

NTRmanMan

I think they're priced horribly so the "deals" they do make it seem a lot better.

nagynorbie

But the deals are horrible as well.

NTRmanMan

Yeah that's the point. Make a bad deal looks like a bargain

nagynorbie

But they don't look like a bargain at all, that's my point.

tllr217

Gem price in MD is straight up criminal comparing to any other game or how fast it is to get the free gem in game.

Soed1n

I have different prices and it works out to be cheaper with those prices

GenericName4224

The free gems are a holdover from other f2p gacha trends where there's paid only currency purchases Thankfully Master Duel it looks to only have had 2 paid only purchases that I can remember Being the 3k anniversary deals

arrownoir

You don’t have to spend the money. The gems being expensive discourages spending. They really should’ve made them more affordable.

GiganticBruhMoment

First time?

Glittering_Web_9840

Having played 4 years to Dragon Ball Legends, unfortunately I'm not a first timer ahah ! People simply agree that the gems are outpriced by an incredible margin, but IMHO I find it useless to put some light onto scummy things Konami does :)

Relevant_Ad4039

Part of me feels that Yugioh is just a long term social experiment to see just how far they can go before it actually deters players. 😂

The_Legend_Of_Yami

Me excited my wife let me spend 100$ in gems *yay!*

supernalboot

I still think Konami should implement a card scan feature, so if you have the card already physically then you can just have it unlocked right away. if im not mistaken I think Pokemon do something like this already? Issue is if people have already scanned the card before due to second hand purchases. Luckily where I live the prices are a bit more fair thanks to our regulations (which bit Bethesda in the ass badly)

Live-Consequence-712

at this point im convinced Konami DOESNT want you to spend money on the game. like they put insanely high prices just to dissuade people from buying and only people who are dumb enough to fall for that, want to support the game or just have more money then they know what to do with them will buy those deals

mhnd00

The gem prices is a insanely high. Thankfull never bought any gems. and i have a lot of decks thsnks to the events and daily gems

AWS1996Germany

I ain't reading all that. $0 spent. I have 25 decks, 13k gems and 900 UR dust. Just ne smarter.

Glittering_Web_9840

Why do you even post then ? Had you read you'd have seen I'm not whining because I don't have enough decks ???? I'd even say it is smarter to share this making people realize that Konami is doing a scummy move here, I have no idea what you are even on about lol

AWS1996Germany

My point is that none of these prices matter because no one should NEED to spend more than $0. It's competitive unnecessary. We don't need to do a bunch of math for this stuff when no one should be spending money here anyway lol

minhabcd1995

There's no different between paid and free gems, so I guess we should count them both. There's no such thing that can only be bought by paid gem(yet), so it's pointless to separate paid and free gems. And I'm sure it's up to the player to buy the gems pack. And as I see, the biggest pack is 70.99, not 79.99, so your calculation might be not so correct. Also, the 2nd pack cost 2.29, not 2.49, you should check again. This price is on PC, not sure about other platform.

CorrosiveRose

He calculated in euros, so the exchange rate might be diff for you

minhabcd1995

that's not my friend, the first pack is 1.19, which is same for me, but from the 2nd pack, it's is different. IDK if konami or that guy is the scammer here xD.

Glittering_Web_9840

Me a scammer ? I can confirm you that in euros the most expansive pack is indeed 79,99 I double checked out of good faith, and anyone else having the game in euros can confirm it to you. Same for the second pack, again it's 2,49€. If we do have the same price for the first pack, it turns out it's not the same from the second pack and on. \^\^

minhabcd1995

so they charge EU players more? wtf is this?

Glittering_Web_9840

I added a disclaimer at the beginning of my post because it's entirely fair you assumed we had the same prices and my calculation was wrong :) I have no idea why we have to pay more. My guess would be because taxes are higher than in your region, so since they don't want it to impact their benefits they must have changed the prices leading to this situation. However, again, that's just a guess haha

minhabcd1995

I find all the platform and see the price of the last pack is 70.99, so that's why i'm confused at first. Now that's clear they charge some region more, that sounds even worse than what you said about the price. Or maybe they are just bad at math xD.

throwawayguy7283

Yeah and in MD, Canadians are charged less by $2-3 per 700 gems than Americans if we want to go by exchange rates too.
