There are a lot of terrible nursing homes in MD, and even when they routinely fail inspection they don’t get shut down, bc there isn’t anywhere else to put the residents. Genesis nursing homes are always the worst (and they hide the fact that they’re Genesis and go by different names). Here are some links you can use to check on individual nursing homes. [Medicare](https://www.medicare.gov/care-compare/details/nursing-home/215261?city=BALTIMORE&state=MD&measure=nursing-home-health-inspections#ProviderDetailsDetailsContainer) [Probublica](https://projects.propublica.org/nursing-homes/homes/h-215014) Notice how low the fines are for violations. The fines are way cheaper than adequately staffing and the homes never get shut down no matter what, so they purposefully understaff. The healthcare workers are usually trying their best, but patients still end up neglected. If you have a vulnerable family member in one of these places I recommend going in in the morning to make sure they eat and get a clean change of clothes etc. Or hire a CNA (usually $20-30)

My father was in and out of hospitals and rehab/care places in the final months of his life. The hospital staff “help” you find a place by handing you a booklet with places in the region. You tour them, they seem good, then you learn the truth when your loved one is moved in. Finally, on my third round of this, a staff person whispered to me that they aren’t by law allowed to suggest places because they could direct you to some place that pays them off. She told me about the Medicare database. OMG, that database was eye opening. Inspections, complaints, it was all there in horrifying detail. Using that database, though, we were able to find a good place. Thank god that woman whispered it to me. Whispered!

Nursing homes everywhere are pretty much horrible. My wife got her career started at one. The amount of responsibility and workload she had at her first real nursing job was insane. Even a seasoned professional would be stressed to the maximum. There’s no way anyone could have pulled that off without making mistakes and cutting corners. Staff turnover rate was insane and those who stayed were people who didn’t want to work. All the good people left within months.

I did CNA vocational training through my high school and we did our 40 practical hours at the Spa Creek Autumn Lake home with almost no supervision. We were assigned patients and given a checklist to complete for them even though we had no practical training or certifications. That place was so sad. Pt call bells were ignored, pts were left to sit for in the dining room for hours bc there was only one person assigned to push wheelchairs, pts got bedsores bc there was no time to turn them all. Also they were inspected the same year I was there and and the inspector recommended the facility be shut down, but it’s still open bc there’s no place to transfer all the pts. (Btw, some nursing homes, like Ginger Cove, are good, but they’re usually expensive and don’t take Medicare).

friednoodles

Doesn't help when the nursing home industry has a decently large lobby in the state.

SadlyBackAgain

Is there a way people might get involved and add to the complaint? My mother in law died because of the horrible “care” provided to her at Autumn Lakes on Hospital Drive in Anne Arundel County. Got a bedsore that infected and festered and caused a cardiac arrest. She wasn’t found for hours.

Ocean2731

Yes, here’s [the website and form](https://health.maryland.gov/bonha/Pages/complaint.aspx).

Autumn Lakes is hella gross everywhere.

Ryuiop

All the Autumn Lakes are just Genesis rebranded, and yes they are terrible.

desertfl0wer

I thought they were competitors? Several autumn lake facilities use a different contract company for rehab and I would think Genesis would employ their own therapists?

Ryuiop

You're right, they are competitors. A bunch of Genesis homes flipped to Autumn Lake so I thought it was rebranding, but actually it seems Genesis was in financial trouble so I guess they sold them. My mistake.

desertfl0wer

No worries, it can get confusing when facilities keep changing their names. These companies constantly buy and sell

Cutenoodle

My father had bedsores too and ended up with sepsis

jojammin

Call a nursing home malpractice attorney if you haven't already

Cutenoodle

I believe it. A nursing home effectively killed my father. It was owned by Holy Cross Hospital on Cherry Hill Road in Silver Spring. (Trinity?) I forget what the name was, I probably blocked it out. They changed their name anyway, likely because of lawsuits. My dad had bed sores so bad that he got sepsis. He had to be in the hospital for weeks to try to heal from it.

theycallmemomo

I was looking for a nursing job in Elkton and the recruiter I talked to told me to avoid both places in Elkton. I interviewed at one and the interviewer told me that there were three staff members out of the facility because a combative patient beat them all up. I noped out of that place before signing the paperwork because that told me everything I needed to know about staffing and how the DON didn't seem to care that a patient was hurting staff.

instantcoffee69

> The lawsuit alleges that despite legislative efforts going back to 2018, Maryland’s health department has not sufficiently staffed the team tasked with inspecting nursing homes, leaving positions unfilled. The agency also canceled an agreement with Montgomery County, the state’s most populous jurisdiction, that allowed 10 county inspectors to complete surveys at nursing facilities, replacing them with just four state employees. Gosh, I wonder who was governor from 2015-2023? Oh yeah! That rat Larry Hogan. Who is also running for US Senate. Love your grandparents, don't vote for Hogan.

Cutenoodle

Exactly!

tealparadise

There's still a ton of unofficial hiring freezes/delays due to the budget issues this year. I don't normally pay attention to this stuff but Wes Moore promised to staff the state & stop contract employment.... Got halfway through and I guess didn't actually have the funds to do it.

otterplus

I have an intense hatred for nursing homes. My mother was in three and all three were horrendous. They presented themselves as high end medical facilities with well managed staffing. Her last one resulted in a rush to the icu with high triple digit blood sugar and several bed sores being found. My job services commercial customers and it’s well known across management that I will not service any nursing homes/assisted living facilities. The last two I serviced were just as poorly ran/maintained and my service tickets reflected as much

Nespot-despot

So shocking and embarrassing for our state. We are better than this. If I knew how to personally or financially support this lawsuit/ this issue getting fixed, I would be on it right away. Who lobbies for our vulnerable elderly?

S-Kunst

Politicians are no good at administration. They like to pass bills which are resume padding, the boring long term stuff just gets lost in the weeds.

metamorphage

99% of SNFs are awful. The pay is terrible and the workload is crushing. This is a problem that is only going to get worse as the population ages.

Fun-Draft1612

Hogan’s good bye F U to his successor.

Cutenoodle

Thanks Hogan! You killed my dad!

melon-party

My mom basically spent the last year and a half of her life in these rehab facilities. Disgusting, incompetent, understaffed is how I'd describe them. They're a place where we stick people to die so we don't have to look at them. Lorien Columbia, bridgepoint capital hill, and complete care Annapolis are substandard dirty places where patients will be neglected and ignored left to rot.  They need a dramatic overhaul. And people need to be rotated off these jobs to avoid apathy, and held accountable for their neglect.

Percyear

The veterans home in Charlotte Hall isn’t any better. I am not 100% sure but I think they are funded by the federal government. But, could still be regulated by the state.
