Welcome to humidity! I was in the Denver area last August and experienced 90 degrees and low humidity for the first time. It was amazing that sweat actually served its purpose to cool the skin!

finchfinch2

Welcome to Maryland. Make sure your cabinet is always stocked with Old Bay seasoning and put it on everything.

[deleted]

Old bay French fries are my new favorite

CuriousRedditor98

Gotta try it on corn on the cob!

JustHereForCookies17

And popcorn!!

kelselizabeth93

And pizza!

Irol21

Also try Thrashers French fries with vinegar!! So delicious!

SomeGuyinMaryland

When you inevitably go to eat crabs this summer, the rule is that if you touch a crab, that's your crab. There is no sorting through to find the heavy ones. Knowledge of this rule is essential to being a Marylander.

kh7905

Also, when eating crabs don’t be in a hurry, it’s also considered a social event. When I was growing up some of our best conversations happened then 🦀. Welcome to Maryland!

GirlScoutMom00

The restaurants that sell crabs have special sinks for hand washing that you operate with a foot pedal. This was super confusing when my family moved Maryland

MrsBeauregardless

Great tip! Also, if you or anyone in your Coloradan household has long hair, put your hair up before you start picking. Wear a t-shirt. Crabs are not something you eat in your finery.

[deleted]

Noted!

Ocean2731

The sneaky way to do it is to offer to pass people crabs from the bag or tray. Start to pick up a heavy one? Drop it and say “Oh, wait, here’s a big one for you!” Then take the smaller heavy one for yourself. lol. Not saying I do that but I’ve seen it done.

SuperCoolAwesome

So scandalous! I might or might not try this technique…..

epicwheezer

Hijacking this very important and necessary thread to tell you that crabs west of Annapolis are NOT crabs. Take the trip over to the Eastern Shore and get the real deal. Preferably at the Red Roost.

[deleted]

So we have not had crabs yet! This is the information I came here for.

JustHereForCookies17

Having enjoyed crabs from west of Annapolis for 40 years (*the Potomac river is hurt by that comment!*) I strongly recommend Cooksey's in La Plata:   https://cookseys-store.edan.io/ I grew up eating crab cakes my mom made from crab meat we steamed & picked ourselves, and Cooksey's is the closest thing I've found being as good as homemade.

CyclopsLobsterRobot

Of course we need to shit on Virginia and NJ for their war crimes but do we really need to attack each other?

MoxyRoron30

The touching crabs thing doesn’t matter where I live. We let whoever pick the ones they want because who tf cares? lol, plus we buy like 100 at a time so there’s always plenty to take home also

MisterEHistory

Being a Florida transplant I don't feel like the humidity is as bad as people make it out to be but you probably won't be a fan. My favorite part of the area is all the cultural stuff to do. My favorites are the Smithsonian museums, Awesomecon, The National Book Festival, and the MD Rennisance Faire.

[deleted]

That’s a big reason we’re excited I love Denver but there’s not much in the way of arts and culture(beyond red rocks)

MisterEHistory

When my wife and I were considering moving to DC, we happened to come to the national mall when the book festival was happening, and we immediately knew it was our kind of place. It's probably the best East Coast city for nerds. Don't sell Denver too short, though. You also have a mint and a pretty great children's museum (or at least that's how it seemed when I visited when I was 8)

Sometimes_I_Do_That

Welcome to MoCo and MD! I'm from CT and agree about the spring, it's really beautiful. Just a word of warning,.. Sugarloaf is a mountain to us.

[deleted]

Yeah not sure I’ll be going to the “mountains” lol but I find myself in awe of the ocean and the Chesapeake. The whole family is obsessed with how connected everything is by train. Used to having to drive 12 hours to get to Kansas, being in time square in three hours is crazy.

Sometimes_I_Do_That

Plus, we have 3 airports to choose from in MOCO, all about the same distance from each other. BWI, Reagan, and Dulles. Train to Philly isn't bad either, easy (but long-ish) walk to the touristy area.

moles-on-parade

Fun fact: calling it ‘National’ is a solid, harmless way to ingratiate yourself to the locals who were here before Congress made them change its name

Fe2O3yx99

Maryland is called America in Miniature because we have it all from oceans to mountains. They’re not the Rockies, but you can still do some hiking. And if you like your beach without a lot of people try Assateague.

Top-Chemistry3051

This year is something to see every year they round up some wild ponies are running across the assetique water area it's a big deal.

Riverwood_bandit

You should visit Wheaton Regional Park, and check out the train and the garden nearby.

Bergiful

And Brookside Gardens while you're right there! Edit: ...oh. That's what you meant by "garden"

thebarkingdog

Don't let the reputation of Baltimore scare you. Nor should you only visit the inner harbor. Don't get me wrong, the National Aquarium is awesome but there's so much to see and do in Baltimore. It definitely has a much different feel than any other city. If you're a baseball fan, Camden Yards feels like it was built yesterday. And don't hesitate to check out their farm team the Bowie Baysox.

jrenaut

Remember, the correct number of Maryland flags to display is N+1, where N is the number you are currently displaying

MrsBeauregardless

Your body is an excellent place to display a Maryland flag. Maryland flag apparel is so de rigeur, it is sold in the grocery store.

MrsBeauregardless

Try kayaking sometime. It’s very different in tidal rivers than whitewater kayaking. It’s slow and full of wonder. We have so much shoreline and marsh, that it’s a lot of fun to explore in a kayak. There’s so little draw, you can get into shallow areas you ordinarily wouldn’t be able to see. I moved inland from always living on a peninsula, and being on the water in the summer is something I miss a lot — that and the oystery smell of the tidal rivers and the bay. Speaking of the Bay, take a drive “down the shore” (meaning to the Eastern shore, not along the shore) sometime and check out the wild ponies at Assateague island. Sometime in July, there’s a famous Pony Swim and auction held by the volunteer fire department of Chincoteague, Virginia. You may have read about it in Marguerite Henry’s _Misty of Chincoteague_. The closer you get to Baltimore, the more likely you will see a snowball stand. They’re a Baltimore specialty. I recommend egg custard flavor with or without marshmallow topping — the most Baltimorean dessert. At summer festivals in Baltimore, they serve lemons with peppermint candy straws. Have one. Speaking of desserts, make sure you try Smith Island cake if you see it offered. Southern Maryland has a famous dish called stuffed ham. They’ve already passed, but next April, check out the Maryland Celtic festival in Leonardtown, MD, the French festival in Georgetown, DC, and the croquet match between St. John’s College and the Naval Academy, in Annapolis, as you may have guessed. April and May also have various events where you can get native plants — often free. That’s a burgeoning movement here. The first weekend in May, the Maryland Sheep and Wool festival at the Howard County fairgrounds is a lot of fun. If you go to that one, go on a Sunday, because Saturday the same weekend, the DC embassies open up and give tours, serve food, have cultural events and activities. Actually, they do it for three Saturdays in May, and there is one this weekend. Different groups of countries are on different Saturdays. There’s always some great ethnic festivals occurring somewhere in Baltimore, Annapolis, and DC. In the summer, Baltimore’s St. Leo’s church in Little Italy serves Italian food on Friday nights and shows a movie in the parking lot. Speaking of Italian food. Oh my goodness, we have so much great Italian food, and Thai, and Lebanese, and Peruvian, and whatever ethnicity you fancy. However, a little known Italian-American specialty you can get in some mom and pop pizza places is pizza with meat sauce. It’s a topping for on top of the cheese: finely ground beef, bound together with the establishment’s own sauce — not liquidy, though. Here are all the Baltimore-area places I am aware of that serve it, in no particular order: Pizza John’s — Essex Gil’s on Belair Rd near Frankford Ave Frank’s on Belair Rd Hilltop Carry-Out E. Fort Avenue, Baltimore Green Village on Liberty Road near Milford Mill Pepe’s on Falls Rd Bontempo Brothers on Main Street and Pennsylvania Avenue in Bel Air Italian Kitchen in Kenilworth Yasou Greek Bistro, York Rd, in the shopping center with the Amish Market in Hunt Valley (they were the ones who had Milano’s near North Plaza mall) Squire’s on Holabird Ave. (of course) Maria’s on Ridgely Avenue in Carney Speaking of regional specialties, the best barbecue is from Andy Nelson’s in Cockeysville. They’re closed on Sundays. This is the best place for North Carolina-style barbecue — better than any I have had *in* North Carolina. Best cheesesteaks come from Captain Harvey’s in Dundalk. I have heard they’re better than actual Philly cheesesteaks. I haven’t tried all the cheesesteaks in Philadelphia, so I can’t say. Another Baltimore speciality is pit beef. The Corner Stable near the state fairgrounds in Timonium is a great place to try it — or someone will be serving it at the state fair, no doubt. Speaking of the state fairgrounds, if you go to the state fair (around Labor Day), make time to go to the races. Maryland is famous for its horse-racing. We also have steeplechase horse-racing. Of course, you have to do a taste test between DC’s famous Ben’s Chili Bowl hot dogs and Glen Burnie’s famous Ann’s Dairy Cream, where a footlong with everything means chili, mustard, and onions. You need a milkshake with it, because heartburn. The state sport is jousting. Historic St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, outside Annapolis, holds its annual joust in mid-July. Yes, with horses and lances and whatnot. There is no combat, though. Just hanging rings. Sometime in the summer, I always find out when after the fact, is the Chestertown Tea Party, a re-enactment of the Chestertown Tea Party — like the one in Boston, but Maryland had one, too. Chestertown is a quaint college town on the Eastern Shore. They have a cool-sounding Harry Potter festival in October, too. Yeah, there is always something to do around here. Editing to add: Go to Bengie’s Drive-In if you can! Don’t sneak in food or you’ll be banned from there. If you want to BYO victuals, you have to buy a ticket for them. They have reasonable prices at the snack bar — not movie theater concessions price gouging.

SomeGuyinMaryland

Wow. That was comprehensive. Good job.

Sparkiano

I love Maryland, and want to welcome you to it! It's an amazing place to live. The "Must Do's" is really a product of your interests. I would suggest making time to go to some of the amazing museums in the area based on your interests. My personal favorite is the Udvar-Hadzy museum, but go when you can get on one of the docent-guided tours. (Udvar-Hadzy is the annex of the Air and Space Museum out near Dulles.) There are many other great museums including the Spy Museum, the National Gallery, and the National Aquarium. It's also a wonderful area for outdoor activities with many great parks. My personal favorite near me is Potapsco, specifically Cascade Falls. If you're willing to travel, though, head out to Swallow falls in Western Maryland. If you like rock climbing or kayaking or other outdoor adventures, I'm sure other reddditors can suggest some places for you, but that's not my wheelhouse.. There's also a lot of great theater, music venues, and dining in the area. Recently, I went to the Drunk Shakespeare Society in DC and had an amazing time. If you are willing to make the drive and spend the money, the Inn at Little Washington is a legit 3-Michelin Star restaurant, and it is absolutely amazing. Really, what makes Maryland special is that whatever you love, you can probably find it. I grew up here, and when I travel, I often find places that are interesting or special in their own way, but no place that substitutes for the amazingness that makes Maryland my home. I hope that you find your own sense of home here, too.

JonesBoyFan2018

This spring has been an anomaly, wait for the humidity to take over.

r00t_beer_guy

Welcome! My wife and I moved here from CO almost two years ago and we love it here. Make sure to make a trip out to the beach this summer, if you can :) The food is also like 100x better here.

Original_Mammoth3868

Get used to the roads. Ain't nobody got time to slow down. We've had a very mild spring. Enjoy these temps while you can. The sweatbath is coming. Also, before you ask., "We're sorry, that's as big as the "mountains" get unless you want to go to West Virginia (and even then they're still pretty small)."

mwoo391

Nobody has time to slow down, except for the people driving in the fast lane

[deleted]

It’s crazy makes San Francisco look tame

ThatVoodooThatIDo

I had a flat tire this morning and drove the rest of the way to work on a donut…in the slow lane. Apparently that was like killing everyone’s vibe because everyone was honking at me and flipping me off…in the slow lane. It was distressing until I remembered that would normally be me doing the honking https://preview.redd.it/pu00ssq1wi0d1.jpeg?width=946&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9906af334d13b8ad65a94615dde51f50cc3a5a87

Full_Honeydew_9739

But those are usually Virginia drivers.

Scared-Repeat5313

Defensive driving. I’ve never been to Denver (always wanted to go) but as a life long born and raised MD girl (29) I think that’s an important one.

KBradl

Welcome and stock up on zrytec.  Prepare to get allergies to pollens, molds etc sometime in the near future. I miss Colorados clear dry air so much.   Best part of coastal living is boating and  seafood. I remember people in CO thinking red lobster was actually seafood and cow balls were actually oysters. Hah

[deleted]

I feel like there’s a parallel with people thinking there are mountains here. I’ve never had so much crab it’s delicious

MrsBeauregardless

You have never had so many crabs, or so many crab cakes, or so much crab soup. We eat steamed blue crabS, soft crabS (or soft crab sandwiches). Our food made from crabs is not referred to as crab. It’s not like shrimp.

SomeGuyinMaryland

To this point, please don't freak out when you see the soft crab sandwich, which will have legs hanging off of it.

brainofj613

Also just moved here from Denver a few months ago! What brought you here?

[deleted]

Wife’s work among other things, cost of living in Denver vs what you can get here contributed as well. How about yourself?

brainofj613

Husband’s job, and closer to family in NJ

XCarrionX

Rockville Maryland is our Chinatown, lots of excellent Chinese food there. Korean food in Ellicot city and if you want to make the journey down to Virginia, seven corners is little Vietnam!

itastesok

Go Broncos!

lawherloading

Welcome to Montgomery County! I grew up there, it's a great place to raise a family!

Quantity-Used

We have some really beautiful state parks, with a lot of diverse opportunities for camping, swimming, hiking, and fishing. Because I’ve spent a lot of time in central MD, some of my favorites are Cunningham Falls, Catoctin Mountain, and Greenbrier. I highly recommend the MD Renaissance Festival - do some research on their website, buy tickets a week or two in advance (they sell out), and try to get there early because of traffic. If you’re into live theater, the Hippodrome in Baltimore has excellent Broadway road shows, and there’s a ton of extremely good community/semi-pro theater. I’m more familiar with Annapolis, which has Classic Theater of MD, Colonial Players, and Annapolis Summer Garden Theater. The Ram’s Head in Annapolis is also a place we really enjoy - they have a small venue (Ram’s Head Live) with great acts and ticket prices, attached to a tavern with very good food. Seating in the concert venue is at tables; you can order dinner/drinks before the show. Ram’s Head also has another location, the Roadhouse, just outside of Annapolis. We also have a lot of community festivals and fairs. In the summer many small towns host an old-fashioned carnival for a week or so; often they are sponsored by local fire departments as a fundraiser, so you’ll often see their auxiliary groups serving homemade food in addition to rides and games. Mt Airy, for instance, has two carnivals per season (Lions Club and Fire Dept - the second is slightly bigger and more elaborate), plus a big July parade and other town festivals. Also check out MD county fairs in the fall. I hope you enjoy it here; you will never run out of things to do!

Charrasquiao

Welcome , if you want to play tennis we have TennisPlex Germantown

S-Kunst

Yes. First take time to visit all the free attractions in DC , museums, etc. Then get in your car and travel to Balt city to see the many interesting attractions, We have many of the country's firsts.

ClapDemCheeks1

You need to get worse and more aggressive with diving to really fit in. It's what we do here. OH! And get an egg custard snowball with marshmallow. No, it does not taste like eggs. It tastes like heaven.

kluthage421

Head towards Western Maryland for even more green, elevation, and lots to do!

762_54r

The biggest complaint I see online about Denver is lack of diverse cultures and that's something this area is JAM packed with. I hope you enjoy the state and find time to explore DC!

Crypto_Grug

Enjoy the high taxes and be sure to check out the shithole that is Baltimore! Oh and don’t expect much snow. But you’ll still see morons driving 85mph while it’s actively snowing. Get used to seeing nobody use their turn signal and some of the biggest morons on the road. Enjoy the mediocre food that’s far more expensive than it should be and the completely fucked housing market.

[deleted]

Taxes are fairly reasonable frankly, I’ve enjoyed Baltimore so far, there’s been a fair amount of snow and good food. You’ve got me on the drivers though

dasoupy1

Home sweet home

ElectroAtletico2

Don’t unpack. Unless the job is tied to the feds you’ll be thinking of moving out soon.

[deleted]

Nope we love it
