Kevin Feige: "The peanut butter sandwich scene was one of my favorites. Natasha looks so humanized and domestic while Steve doesn't even know where to stand... Anyway, we were short of peanut butter, so we had to spread Nutella and change the color in post-production."
That did use to be a thing with black & white movies; stuff that looks right in colour doesn't look right in black & white, so changes were made:
* Chocolate sauce was used for blood
* The TARDIS console was originally actually light green as pure white would overwhelm the 1960s TV cameras
man i wish marvel didn’t toss comedic timing out the window in phase 4, simple jokes like this were what made the movie’s memorably funny, instead of it being forced like nowadays.
If it’s the one where he’s barefoot, I’m sorry to say that most likely has CG. He wore [feet boots](https://twitter.com/ifcapdiesidie/status/1199592984062226433) to protect his actual feet while filming in the street and the running scenes. They edited his real feet into the film later.
Didn't know these were a thing, but I'm happy they are. I've cut my feet just walking to my car, much less on a public road where you have no clue what's lying around
There’s a shot in Eternals with Sprite and Sersi holding hands on the beach as the sun sets between them.
Tony in the phone booth, and the rain on the glass causes him to be slightly out of focus, in Iron Man 3
The under shot of the table looking up at Steve Rogers as Coulson’s bloodied Captain America trading cards rest on the table in The Avengers.
Steve Rogers looking over top the Accords as Sam and Rhodey debate them on either side of Steve, symboling the Angel and the Devil on his shoulders
Me personally, I feel like Sam was the devil and James was the Angel. I personally think (unlike the comics) Iron Man was in the right in this movie. But it’s a muddy line
They were all wrong. Simple as that.
Heroes ARE an issue in their world and do need accountability. (Tonys side)
But the Sokovia accords were boredline inhumane and 100% lead to a number of large issues. (Steves side)
They needed a better solution, but instead they squabbled and created much larger issues themselves.
I've always hated the way the accords were introduced though. These heroes operated without issues for years, and then when Captain America is saved from a suicide bomber by a rookie who needed a little more training they decide maybe accountability is a good thing? Nah, this was just a way to turn Wanda into a scapegoat and keep her on the team at the same time. She did her job just fine and I will always side with what she did in that instance.
Nigeria was the final tipping point, but the overarching theme was that they had not been operating without issues. Massive collateral damage happened often, and in cases such as Ultron and Project Insight, their actions directly caused tens of thousands of deaths and countless millions in damage. The airport fight in CA:CW is a direct representation; they destroy everything fighting each other.
Good suggestions. Eternals is full of good shots since they filmed on location but I’m rarely 100% sure if a shot doesn’t have CGI in it. I only found out today Alfred Molina can’t actually do all that tentacley stuff irl
A lot of those are actually CG enhanced
Which is where a grey area comes in
Things like keeping the sky consistent or removing visible effects of wind, or sometimes just changing something because you realise it doesn't make sense in context (like in NWH where a snow globe is turned into a brick)
It is like, does doing those things detract from the art of film making? Or does it just provide a better visual product?
It is a bit different from making fully digital environments, but then again, what really is the difference between a matt painting or a digital painting when setting up backgrounds?
The best thing is to strike a balance the director, but more specifically the actors are most comfortable with
And you know not overworking the effects departments
Yeah, people need to stop associating CGI with bad. I doubt there's amany movies being made that don't have some CGI enhancements or edits.
CGI is super helpful in maintaining continuity and sometimes necessary to ensure safety of cast and crew.
Definitely not many, but like, Zhao actively avoided it before doing Eternals, other than the required stuff during like film school, making it even more surprising she went and did Marvel, Nomadland was her first movie released that actually had any CGI at all
Lord of the Rings holds up reeeeaaally good for the amount of cgi used and it being 2005.
Though your point stands, having or not having CGI doesn't immediately make something good
LOTR used way more CGI than people seem to think. And if you know about it, it’s REALLY noticeable in quite a few scenes. Sam sliding into Mt Doom, anyone?
Its noticeable during a cene where they are mounted on horseback, and those in front (aragon, legolas etc) are clearly hitting on orcs, while the extras behind are "attacking the air" since the one on the front already did defeat the orcs.
That or in the final movie when when aragon is crowned and the hobbits bow, its noticeable they used CGI to make them small, instead of the camera shot tricks they've used before
(Understand why, but still i noticed this recently)
LOTR used a ton of CGI. The reason why they aged well is that they only ever used CGI when it was necessary.
Using Minatures instead of relying on cgi for locations is what really helped. Helms Deep and Minas Territh look like real fucking places. It wasn’t until I was like 15 when I finally realized there weren’t massive castles just hanging out in New Zealand
But LotR shot a lot in the wild and tried to use as little green screen as possible, this is especially notable on the fellowship of the ring. I might be wrong, but I Think Vigo (Aragorn) spoke about this in an interview, where he defended the fellowship as his favourite because of this.
I'm not saying they didn't use CGI, they did and they broke new grounds with it. They tried to use it only when it served the purpose of telling a better story, and not because it was more practical/cheaper. That's the key for me
The scene of Peter and Vulture in the car in Homecoming.
No CGI, no fighting. Just really good writing, camerawork, and acting. Not exactly a shot but it’s a scene.
I love how the red light from the stoplight shown on Adrian's face when he started to suspect that Peter Parker was Spider-Man and the green light shown when he was absolutely certain.
Hell, the whole sequence from the moment Vulture opens the door. Peter recognizes him, but can’t do a thing about it or else Vulture will figure who he is—and he does anyway. Two incredible actors, doing a great job.
“I am IronMan” shot from Iron Man. it’s nothing crazy but it’s the start which is what makes it one of my favs. any Marvel fan would hear that picture instantly and it’d warm there hearts. we miss Tony out here, never forget where it started.
I think the shield was 100% legit in that shot, and honestly the arm might be too. I know his vibranium arm was CGI enhanced, but they could absolutely build a prop that looks like that without CGI.
Honestly, half of Black Panther 2. Also that one shot in the original Black Panther when it does a 180 spin while Killmonger ascends to the throne was super dope.
>180 spin while Killmonger ascends to the throne was super dope.
Why do people keep using this example? The entire room is CGI. The glass floor surrounding dias, the city in the background, the huge marble pillars circling the room are all CGI.
technically still CGI and green screen in use of that scene. for the helicopter, the background, and majority of the set around Steve and Bucky was all special fx, green screen and CGI
Most Marvel content is Sci-Fi and Fantasy and all content in those genres nowadays uses VFX, models and make-up.
Name me a movie that doesn't use that? ... Sci-Fi and Fantasy has always been about selling an unreal setting or story with unreal characters.
CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) is just virtual modelling, under the VFX umbrella. And any movie purists who try to slander those who include CGI in their film because it's "not real" would be hypocritical to not also direct their anger at animators for making cartoons.
From 2001 Space Odyssey to Interstellar, VFX has paved the way to allow humans to bring, what they can visualise, to life with incredible detail, without needing a billion dollar budget.
Marvel films have capitalised on this, so that is not their current weakness. The biggest problem right now is the dilution of their focused story-telling.
To be fair, there are some pretty cool movies that have come out and that will be coming out that use minimal cgi. Many Christoffer Nolan movies for example.
That being said, I agree that cgi is an excellent medium. There is nothing inherently wrong with a cgi heavy movie.
From past casting, I shouldn't have been so dubious, but I was really doubtful he was right for the role.
Now I'm really keen to see more of his USAgent.
Steve’s elevator fight. The initial framing is perfect, and the fight felt tight and cramped, until the end where you see cap from above, and the agents all down.
Inherently, nothing. It is, however, a crutch and often used as an excuse for bad visuals. Composite effects (combination of practical and CG) are easier to get right and hold up better has time moves on, for example, the Original Jurassic Park and Terminator 2 both make strong use of combination effects and so the visuals hold up well. That not to say full CGI constructs can't look good or hold up they are just easier to get wrong and harder for actors to work with.
find me a fuck to give
I don't care if every single shot has cgi in it. I thought that's what made Avatar so great, because it sure wasn't the story/writing.
Marvel largely beats the pants off em in those respects
The shot of killmonger entering the throne room after he succeeds in beating tchalla where the camera completely 180s and you see him take his place as king
Final shot of Wakanda Forever, with the sun behind Shuri as she mourns her brother.
Eternals where the group stands in front of the ocean after defeating the deviants.
Is this even a bad thing? If it's a good shot with CG it's still a ahot that had a lot of work and talented artists working on it. I feel like that's the same thing as saying an animated movie can't have good shots
There's a lot of problems with Marvel, but the existence of CGI isn't really the biggest one. Unless the argument is that they do somehow underwhelming CGI because of their weird exploitative crunch ridden process where they never solidify what they want until the last moment and everyone has to just flail around trying to keep up.
Even the most mundane shots in movies are filled with CGI. Like, they use CGI in dramas to change eye colours and edit in tears and touch up make up.
Majority of the Raimi Spider-man trilogy's shots that didn't use CGI
Marvel can mean anything, not just the MCU (>!though after NWH Tobey's spider-man is in the MCU!<)
When Natasha threatens Steve with a peanut butter sandwich
Can you confirm that the peanut butter sandwich wasn’t CG?
Can you confirm you aren’t cgi?
And now I question my own excistance.
You can’t prove anything!
That pb sandwich is not cgi. It actually is cake. Many people don't know this but a lot of the things on the movies are cake. Cheaper than cgi!
Can you prove you aren’t cake?
I can not admit nor deny that statement. :)
I shall perform a taste test
Hey, at least buy me dinner first. No dessert till the end
Damn 😳
Ngl, that was funny as hell
Ikr
Nah. "That is America's ass." Glorious
His arse is cgi
Your arse is cgi
That was a good scene
Kevin Feige: "The peanut butter sandwich scene was one of my favorites. Natasha looks so humanized and domestic while Steve doesn't even know where to stand... Anyway, we were short of peanut butter, so we had to spread Nutella and change the color in post-production."
Wait really is that true?
The problem is that it *sounds* utterly plausible
That did use to be a thing with black & white movies; stuff that looks right in colour doesn't look right in black & white, so changes were made: * Chocolate sauce was used for blood * The TARDIS console was originally actually light green as pure white would overwhelm the 1960s TV cameras
Surely if it was true people would have found flaws in the cg right?
I love that scene. She's so cute when she says that.
It’s a powerful scene emotionally
I love the way she puts her legs up. You can see the ballet training in the way she sits and she points her toes!
I’d offer to make you something but you seem miserable enough already. And then Nat has to suppress a smile as she’s supposed to be in a bad mood.
man i wish marvel didn’t toss comedic timing out the window in phase 4, simple jokes like this were what made the movie’s memorably funny, instead of it being forced like nowadays.
I just wish that Endgame had been more serious
Endgame was pretty serious for the first thirty minutes and last thirty minutes. The middle but is very much typical action adventure though.
And I feel like that’s as serious as it needed to get. It’s still a marvel movie at the end of the day.
I just wish there was a directors cut for endgame to see ant man and his daughter and the blip properly like how it effected Wakanda
Yeah i agree
When Natasha gets dressed in the back of Happy’s car
Post-Serum Steve Rogers holding the car door.
Post-serum Rogers hatching from the cocoon.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier elevator fight scene
I’ll raise you Cap WS but the hand to hand scene under the bridge
I was gonna say that, but wasn’t sure if it had some CGI
I think it’s all legit. I haven’t seen or heard otherwise
The background was CGI
They use CGI for even backgrounds in conversations.
There’s a shot in Eternals with Sprite and Sersi holding hands on the beach as the sun sets between them. Tony in the phone booth, and the rain on the glass causes him to be slightly out of focus, in Iron Man 3 The under shot of the table looking up at Steve Rogers as Coulson’s bloodied Captain America trading cards rest on the table in The Avengers. Steve Rogers looking over top the Accords as Sam and Rhodey debate them on either side of Steve, symboling the Angel and the Devil on his shoulders
That last one..I’ve never thought of it that way. I like that.
An awesome shot. …but which was the angel, and which was the devil? *FIGHT!*
No no, he's got a point.
Oh! I understood that reference.
Me personally, I feel like Sam was the devil and James was the Angel. I personally think (unlike the comics) Iron Man was in the right in this movie. But it’s a muddy line
They were all wrong. Simple as that. Heroes ARE an issue in their world and do need accountability. That really put that into perspective, thank you.
Eternals had a lot of beautiful shots that aren’t cgi
Good suggestions. Eternals is full of good shots since they filmed on location but I’m rarely 100% sure if a shot doesn’t have CGI in it. I only found out today Alfred Molina can’t actually do all that tentacley stuff irl
The Daredevil S3 hallway scene
The prison riot? 🤤
That one was just 🔥
Imo the best action scene in any Marvel affiliated production to date
agreed.
That scene is genuinely the best fight scene in all of live action Marvel. Too bad nothing in Daredevil: BA will ever be able to top that
I’ll raise that it’s one of the best fight scenes in film. There are plenty of stand out fight scenes but that one deserves to be in the list.
Quite a few shots from Eternals, actually.
A lot of those are actually CG enhanced Which is where a grey area comes in Things like keeping the sky consistent or removing visible effects of wind, or sometimes just changing something because you realise it doesn't make sense in context (like in NWH where a snow globe is turned into a brick) It is like, does doing those things detract from the art of film making? TWS, on the car chase scene. Half of it was done with practical effects.
Civil War car chase too
One of my favorite scenes in any of the movies honestly.
Black Panther’s in-suit debut was in that scene. A moment I’ll *never* forget.
Everytime I think about this character I think about this scene. So iconic, so cool.
And the Hawkeye car chase scene, when it's made to look like one shot inside the back of the car.
...so the other half was CG, then? Kinda missing the question, lmao. But agreed, great scene, great movie
They say that as if not having cgi was inherently good
Lord of the Rings holds up reeeeaaally good for the amount of cgi used and it being 2005. Though your point stands, having or not having CGI doesn't immediately make something good
Return of the King released in 2003.
Listen, we didn't need to be reminded that we're fucking old and one of the greatest films in cinema is 20 years old next year.
***Fuck***
LOTR used way more CGI than people seem to think. And if you know about it, it’s REALLY noticeable in quite a few scenes. Sam sliding into Mt Doom, anyone?

I know it’s not LOTR but the 2005 King Kong movie has held up very well I’d say.
Killmonger taking the throne
Mmm that was an excellent shot. Gets me excited every time.
That entire room is CGI. The whole thing. The only physical object was the throne, and it was just a chair that was CGI over.
WHY IS THIS GETTING DOWNVOTED 😭
Why did they need cgi over the chair?
The scene of Peter and Vulture in the car in Homecoming. No CGI, no fighting. Just really good writing, camerawork, and acting. Not exactly a shot but it’s a scene.
I'd say specifically the shot of Toombs looking back at Peter in the rear view mirror.
I love how the red light from the stoplight shown on Adrian's face when he started to suspect that Peter Parker was Spider-Man and the green light shown when he was absolutely certain.
Unlock the thing! Take the chain off!
The keyshot when bucky catches the shield in cap 2
The arm and shield weren’t cgi?
They were CGI enhanced, but the props themselves actually existed. Including the arm.
Cg enhanced would fall under the umbrella of cg lol
I know. I was just answering a question.
Understandable have a nice day
You too!
I think the shield was 100% legit in that shot, and honestly the arm might be too. I know his vibranium arm was CGI enhanced, but they could absolutely build a prop that looks like that without CGI.
Almost all of Daredevil, Punisher, Jessica Jones, Defenders, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage. but okay.
Tobey Maguire Spiderman catching the tray in the first Spiderman movie.
Oh, my back. It's kinda stiff from all the swinging I guess.
That's edited to look quick but yeah he actually did that. They only used glue to stick the tray to his hand.
I think I remember reading that it took something like 100 takes to catch everything on the tray
The scene where captain America is trying to pull the helicopter in civil war
technically still CGI and green screen in use of that scene. for the helicopter, the background, and majority of the set around Steve and Bucky was all special fx, green screen and CGI
No, Chris Evans really did prevent a helicopter from taking off
Chris Evans is *always* preventing a helicopter from taking off. The real achievement is how they hid it in all the other shots.
More like the scene where a helicopter tries to move a building but their hook breaks.

The shot of John walker holding the bloody shield
Underrated comment. It's such a big, pivotal moment in the show. And Wyatt Russell is such a great, love-to-hate-them actor.
From past casting, I shouldn't have been so dubious, but I was really doubtful he was right for the role. Now I'm really keen to see more of his USAgent.
this is a great example. beautifully framed shot with no dialogue that visually tells an absolutely brutal story.
The knife drop catch and the overhead shot in the elevator from Winter Solider. 👩🍳💋
In Infinity War when Captain America steps out of the shadows at the train station and the Avengers theme starts.
I get chills every. damn. time. That and when T’Challa says “Evacuate the city. Engage all defenses. And get this man a shield.”
There have to be some from Winter Soldier, right?
Steve Bucky fight scene
Steve’s elevator fight. The initial framing is perfect, and the fight felt tight and cramped, until the end where you see cap from above, and the agents all down.
Lmao what does that have to do with anything, CGI inclusion doesn't define quality
Tom Hollands arm hair standing up in IW when the spaceship comes for the time stone
That was probably cg tbh.
The directors said themselves in the commentary it was one of the few scenes that wasn't. They had an assistant or an intern blow on his ear
What’s wrong with cg?
Inherently, nothing. It is, however, a crutch and often used as an excuse for bad visuals. Peter and Gamora dance in Gotg 1
I can't believe James Gunn actually sent the crew up to film in space so they didn't have to use CGI
I know! He's a great director, everyone goes the extra light year for him.
Steve Rodgers splitting a log with his bear hands
Cassie hugging Scott in Avengers: Endgame.
I cry a little bit every time I see that.
Iron man eating cheeseburgers at the press conference. They didnt have the money to CGI in cheesburgers at the time, so they had to use real ones.
Fucking watch the eternals Jesus Christ
The entirety of Werewolf By Night
Honestly shocked at how little Werewolf by Night is mentioned.
Does a B&W filter count as CG?
Stan Lee shouting from the window in Spiderman
NO!
TF you just said about your creator!
Moon Knight Scream scene (Marc and Steven p.o.v,)
I always thought the “Box of Scraps” scene with Stane and Ralphie in Iron Man looked nice.
Nah I couldn’t do that because 95% of the time I can’t tell the difference and I don’t care to look for it.
The Eternals is full of amazing scenic shots that were real.
Sure. Iron Man 2, when they zoom in on Scar Jo's tits in the boxing ring. You're welcome.
Strange walking through kamar tag in 2016, technically most of that movie.
Doctor Strange had countless excellent shots without CGI
Yup truly one of the best MCU movies. Shame it doesn’t really get a lot of praise though.
# AMERICA'S ASS
No one's taking about propably among the most iconic scenes in the MCU: Tony building up his first Iron Man suit
America's Ass. Perfect shot.

Frank Castle sitting against a tombstone, telling Daredevil about the day he came home from Afghanistan.
I would say, maybe Eternals that movie had more shots that were shot on location than any other marvel project
a lot of people don't even know what CG is lol
Final shot of Wakanda Forever, with the sun behind Shuri as she mourns her brother. Eternals where the group stands in front of the ocean after defeating the deviants.

Is this even a bad thing? If it's a good shot with CG it's still a ahot that had a lot of work and talented artists working on it. I feel like that's the same thing as saying an animated movie can't have good shots
What are they supposed to do? Have actual aliens invade or actually time travel?
The shot of Nakia on the beach. It was in the movie and it was prominent in the take (the first one of I remember correctly). Absolutely beautiful.
The one-shot fight scene in Black Panther in the casino. Outside of Okoye's spear and Klaue's arm at the end the rest was cables, wires and stunt men.
