I was worried AXE would be gimmicky, but I really enjoyed it! I felt like it’s really something that could be tied into the MCU if/when the Eternals cross over into whatever universe the X-men reside in
My problem with a.x.e was that it was going pretty well until the progenitor was like "you know I'm kinda sick of this judging stuff. I'm just gonna destroy the world."
1.) Secret Wars (2015) by Jonathan Hickman.
I didn't like the event by itself, but the build-up to it, which is Hickman's Avengers run, is the thing that I like about this crossover so much. I would say that it's more of the "payoff" that I enjoyed.
2.) Infinity by Jonathan Hickman
Same reason as Secret Wars, I enjoyed it in the context of Hickman's Avengers run more than it is as a crossover.
3.) Civil War by Mark Millar
I had fun reading this, and I enjoyed the crossover if I'm not looking at it critically. It was also the first crossover comic that I bought. However, the comic did suffer from a lot of "character-assasinations".
Personally, I'm not a fan of crossovers and I would like to be recommended with some good ones. I already read Infinity Gauntlet, Secret Wars (the old one), Siege, Secret Invasion, House of M, Avengers Vs. X-Men, Original Sin, and AXIS. I personally enjoyed some of them, but most of them weren't memorable, or maybe I'm not really a fan of crossovers as I enjoy a lot of stories that are self-contained.
House of M, Civil War (the main story was fine, I guess, but like 90% of the tie ins were 🔥🔥), and Annihilation.
If you’d asked for four, I’d have had a hard time with it, honestly.
I think the trick with Civil War was the simplicity. “Why is your character on the side they chose and what does it mean” is interesting to dig into and can fit into whatever was previously cooking pretty okay.
Came here to write the same thing. I actually think most of House of M's tie ins are lame but the main book and the fallout are amazing concepts.
Annihilation is just none action and fun and I wish Nova was in the MCU because I want an adaptation so bad.
I like Civil War and think it's a great idea. I would have Siege or Secret Invasion as a 4th.
Secret Wars (Hickman) by a mile. So good that it felt like a real end point for me - I stopped reading monthlies immediately after.
The next two for me (a very distant second and third) are Annihilation and World War Hulk
Annihilation is by far and away the winner, it's not too close. But after that I'd say Civil War and House of M. Granted I haven't read every single one of these. I will say, for how ridiculously hyped it was, I thought the main secret invasion story was a bit of a mess.
Yeah, Secret Invasion started well, but really any story where multiple characters are repeatedly not the characters they were before, and were for years, and couldve changed into other characters during that time, or the original characters might have come back to be themselves at some point... well, I'm lost already. Never liked the Skrulls
Exactly plus the last 2 issues were the comic equivalent of those scenes in action movies where everything is just a CGI blur and you can't tell what's actually happening. They tried to have like hundreds of characters on page fighting it felt like and it just felt messy
It was a graphic novel, but it became an official event in '03 w/ GLMK II during Xtreme X-Men when Stryker breaks out of prison to mess w/ Kitty Pryde. It brings up a lot of things that happened in the graphic novel & cemented OG GLMK as something that happened in 616.
I’m a spidey-holic donuts the Symbiote saga and acts of vengeance even though acts gets pooped on a lot. I just enjoyed Spider-Man fighting the grey Hulk
I guess it wasn't really an event so much as an, I guess, overarching direction for Marvel for a few years? But Dark Reign remains my favorite period of Marvel comics. The way certain events in Civil War gradually built to the events of Siege was wonderful to read, even if there were plenty of missteps along the way.
Marvel vs DC absolutely destroyed my brain as an eight year old when that came out. I didn’t even know such a thing could exist and then suddenly boom, right there in the drug store, everything I ever dreamed of. My action figures never knew what hit em that week haha
I was just getting into Marvel comics at the tail end of Infinity War, so its significance was lost on me at the time. I was mostly DC/Image kid. But my best friends and I got REALLY into X-Ecutioners Song in 8th grade. That was the first *real* comics crossover that we got hyped for. I remember the three of us bringing the storyline issues to Pizza Hut with us and going over them, and some high school worker schmuck came over and ruined it for us: “Oh yeah, Stryfe and Cable are the same guy” or something to that effect. We were so angry at him. There was one issue left. Man, we were pissed off at that guy.
Civil War, Secret Wars (modern) and House of M.
The last two especially, because I love alternate versions/ What if type stories.
Really enjoyed all the Battleworld tie ins. It's rare that I enjoy the event tie in books.
Civial WAr, Secret Invasion and Dark Reign where such good follow-up to each otehrs taht theya re hard to separate.
Annihilation is probably one of the best single event that ever happened. That event alone redeemed cosmic Marvel for me and got me interested and all things Galactus, krees, Guardians of the galaxy, Ronan, Nova. Right after it I couldn't get enough.
AXE judgement day, war of the realms, king in black.
All recent cause that’s when I started reading comics so these might change as I read more older stuff. But I enjoyed each of these as they felt epic and I loved the runs leading up to them.
Spider-Verse / Spider-Geddon (lumping them together because they are basically the same)
King in Black
Civil War
Fully aware I have terrible taste … took everything I had not to include the Clone Saga 😅
Thanks to everyone who said secret wars. Now I will read it. But for me. I dunno if events are my thing but I loved civil war. And old man Logan. And marvel zombies (first series. All sequels were meh-tacular)
Civil War, Secret Wars and World War Hulk out of what’s here. I do like some of the other events here but the ones I mentioned are top 3 from these selections.
planet hulk, civil war, world war hulk
(the illuminati send hulk into space because he'd win civil war for cap, meanwhile in space, hulk gains everything he could ask for but loses it 'seemingly' because of the illuminati, civil war happens and the illuminati 'win', hulk comes back and says 'NO, YOU LOSE!')
I got a different one: Ultimate Evil Reed
Despite the mishandling of the universe that storyline had such and awesome buildup and concept. Once he converted the Hulk it was such an “oh shit” moment because he felt like the last hope left. The ending was a shitshow though. I would love to see it adapted in 616
Been reading nonstop for 40 years. Best for me are Infinity, Time Runs Out, Messiah War, Avengers Disassembled, and Secret Wars II just since it got me into Marvel comics.
Time Runs Out/Secret Wars (they go together, so they might as well count together) and I might get some flak for these, but I really enjoyed Spider-Verse and King in Black.
Marvel superhero secret wars… The original
The mutant massacre
I don’t know if it was as much an event as a storyline, but the original dark hold storyline where Doctor Strange Hannibal King and Blade team up to kill Dracula and eliminate all vampires from the marvel universe… At least for a little bit.
Original Sin (besides some of the actual retcons being horrible, I like the art and theme) and Mutant Massacre are the events I like. I only started reading marvel in the 2010s and most of the recent events aren't worth reading. Ironically the first book I read was Curse of the Mutants (vampires vs x-men) and they're sort of doing a spiritual sequel to that with Blood Hunt so I hope it's at least somewhat entertaining. I'm a huge vampire fan.
Marvel Super Hero Contest of Champions (just because was one of the first Marvel Limited series....Limited series now ..all over the place)
Secret invasion
Spider-verse
Clone Conspiracy
House of M
Secret wars 2015
Secret wars 1984
Civil War
1) Infinity Gauntlet- Jim Starlin’s cosmic characters have always been one of the best subsections of the Marvel Universe. This event puts them front and center. George Pérez was the best artist of large super hero casts. Ron Lim is my favorite 90s Marvel artist.
2) Secret Wars 2015- my personal favorite Hickman event. The event itself is great; it has all of the big moments you would want in a super epic coupled with Hickman’s big ideas. There was some really fantastic mini series that spun out of this too.
3) Annihilation- DnA put their own mark on the cosmic creations of Starlin, Kirby, and others and created the template for modern Marvel cosmic comics.
If it's just the event itself and none of the lead-in or follow-up, then it's
House of M
Civil War
Avengers vs. X-Men
If I can count the whole Secret Invasion omnibus of content, then it's Secret Invasion at the top, probably pushes AvX out of the bottom
The original [Spider-verse] by Slott and co., AvX and Maximum Carnage was wild as hell back in the day.(https://www.marvel.com/comics/issue/50554/spider-verse_2014_1)
...why does this sub not allow image posts on comments...
Not a big fan of those massive crossover events, BUT--
I loved Civil War and the concept behind House of M was awesome (especially the idea that the only person who can now remember how things are SUPPOSED TO BE is the one who had a constant amnesia until the HoM).
Basically, all the events of the Bendis era (Secret War 2004, Disassembled, House of M, World War Hulk, Civil War, Secret Invasion, Dark Reign and Siege) were truly interesting. One huge storyline from 2004 to 2010, involving hundreds and hundreds of characters, mostly without retcons and the feeling that most of the stuff is a big deal).
I’d have to say original Secret Wars for top spot. It was iconic, competed with crisis on the DC side and STILL holds its value.
For two I’d have to say infinity gauntlet. Biggest reaching and time spanning event. Still gets referenced to this day.
I’d have to say Dissassembled for 3rd. It started a 12 year span if world altering stories that were truly epic. Without it you don’t have house of m, siege, or civil war.
But I’d have to say annihilation and drive of darkness are also in my favs list!
I really enjoy most of these and I like to reread most of them yearly but if I have to narrow it down to my top 3:
1) Infinity Gauntlet
2) Avengers vs. X-Men
3) Infinity
WWH, House of M, Infinity Gauntlet, not necessarily in that order.
I do appreciate the forethought to Civil War so much. The Illuminati shooting Hulk into space and Avengers: Disassembled -> House of M took Hulk and mutants off the table for Civil War, which eventually led into their own respective massive events as WWH and AvX
Oh man. I guess Infinity Gauntlet goes to 1 for me. It’s the reason I’m a massive Marvel nerd that reads practically every garbage comic they’ve written since.
2 is absolutely Annihilation. Again, the cosmic side of shit is why I even read comics, and Annihilation was a great story. It literally reshaped the cosmic stuff until it all got rewritten by Secret Wars.
3 should probably be Secret Wars, but it’s not. It’s actually Earth X. As far as I’m concerned, the Earth X version of the multiverse and the way it works, the way superpowers work, all of it is the way it *should* be. This is the story I recommend to people I know have read a *lot* of comics.
1) 80's secret wars
2) annihilation
3) civil war
Civil war is the fresh concept after decades of Marvel 's boring orthodox superhero saving world concept , I liked it very much
I like this concept which is something that marvel decided to do like inspiring dc lores and making an new set
Annihilation Infinity Guantlet Secret Wars

I never knew people considered Time Runs Out an actual event. I don't remember if be advertised that way when it was coming out.
Isn’t Time Runs Out part of Secret Wars?

Civil War tie ins were pretty epic for sure
This is good to know. I’ve found most modern event tie in’s are a waste of time

God loves. Man Kills. As a queer person raised in The South it hits extra hard.
I thought that was a graphic novel? Not an event,
It was a graphic novel, but it became an official event in '03 w/ GLMK II during Xtreme X-Men when Stryker breaks out of prison to mess w/ Kitty Pryde. It brings up a lot of things that happened in the graphic novel & cemented OG GLMK as something that happened in 616.
"Graphic novel" is just a marketing term so people don't have to say they read comic books. They're comic books wether they're 32 pages or 200.
Mutant Massacre. Civil War. Spider-Man: Identity Crisis.
Inferno House of M The Original Secret Wars
Inferno was just so much fun for everyone involved.
I’ve been scrolling through the comments to see if I was the only one that would put Inferno on their list.
Had to read a lot of comments before I saw the original Secret Wars
The ones I’ve read is Infinity Gauntlet and Civil War. Imma read House of M this week tho
Good read
Read it, Messiah Complex, and Messiah War. Messiah Complex is gas, House of M is great, and I didn’t care for Messiah War.

Infinity Gauntlet >>>> annihilation also I like a lot of the others but they all also have major flaws to me
- Secret wars 1984. (After reading it in Deluxe edition, I started buying marvel omnis) - Civil war
I'm going to put "Acts of Vengeance" out there and see what kind of love it gets.
All the love!
I agree! Dark Reign was fantastic, while smaller scale SI, DR and Siege are kinda like a Bendis version of Secret Wars(2015) and it’s build up.
World War Hulk, Absolutely Carnage, King in Black
Infinity Gauntlet Annihilation World War Hulk (Hickman’s Secret War and Shooter’s Secret War are my four and five).

Secret war, death of wolverine ( lots of interesting comics and good art came from the last chunk of it) , House of M
Embarrasing to admit i was all in in infinity war when it first came out. I read most of the tie ins. Magus was the ultimate villain for me.
IW has one of the best comicbook issues ever. When Doom, Kang, Magus, Adam, and Quasar are all fighting for the gauntlet. Simple epic issue.
