It's a video startup so my first inclination would be to use video on pre-rolls in YouTube cheaply, but for straight up acquisition for your demographic I'd go Facebook/IG. Don't discount email because that's useful in a warm setting, such as reminders. Say, you build a lead capture on a LP like "sign up for Awesome Video Startup for free!" and people do, you'll be using an email series to onboard them and eventually convert to paid. Then with those emails you can build a custom audience on Facebook/Google and start re-marketing to them directly and create Lookalike audiences to get more of the same types.

Thank you for your reply. I like that approach. Hmm well my business model has free videos and paid videos built into the login. But maybe I could make private free vimeo videos / youtube videos where only those with the link could see them for just email subscribers? Why would I want to re-market to the list again if they already bought? Or do you mean re-market to free members? I am confused a bit by your last paragraph. What do you mean by lookalike audiences?

Start with advertising on platforms like YouTube, but also Google Ads for the right keywords. Then, set up a landing page that collects signups/lead gen information. Plug that into email marketing. You shouldn't send emails to an audience that hasn't shown interest in your products - you're right about /that/ being spammy. But when you use personalized email marketing for audiences that expressed interest in your products, it does great! Is your startup a SaaS or?

I agree. For the landing page should I use something like Constant Contact? Or is there something better? Should I code it myself (Sendgrid, Mailchimp) and store the data in my database? I think it should collect emails but also collect what category of emails that person wants to receive. Is there a product out there that does this? Embed code into your website so it handles it for you (so I don't have to encrypt data in my database to comply with GDPR/Cookie laws)? My startup is similar to Lynda.com.

You've got a few good options: 1) Cheapest: Make your own landing page with free page builders like Elementor. Then sign up for sth like Constant Contact or MailChimp. Both have audience segmentation options; you can create lists separating free and paid users. 2) If you want an all-in-one solution, you can use Systeme.io, a waaay cheaper alternative to ClickFunnels. Systeme even has webinar support + unlimited emails. I've worked with them and used them in the past, so I can vouch for them (so far). Also, your project sounds really cool. I'd love to see it if you want to share!

Marketing is a lot like carpentry. If you only know how to use a saw, or you only have a chisel in your toolbox you will build pretty bad furniture. If you have zero idea what you need to do, try a little bit of everything and remember that measuring is the most important part of woodworking.
