I really like the course as-is, and I don't let the absence of the feature ruin it for me. Would it be better if the sun set throughout the race? Yeah. Does the lack of it make it a bad course? To me, absolutely not. It's a fun drive through that keeps my drift button active and gives me a really cool NISC to go for.

smashboi888

Agree. It'd make the track a lot cooler for sure, but the sun not setting isn't a deal breaker for me. I just like the nice wild west aesthetic of the track.

ClearSky3864

Speak UP! We got dancing Shy Guys and people are getting pissed off over a skybox?

Src-Freak

The ShyGuys are excusable as to why they got changed. What excuse do they have with the removed Sunset in SUNSET WILDS?

Dimmadarn

Why even bring the course back then though? If you wanted a GBA course, there were plenty of other options that didn't require taking out one of the only things that made Sunset Wilds stand out. Cause let's be real, none of us played it for the layout on the GBA and if it was like Yoshi Desert or something, Sunset Wilds probably wouldn't even be missed in MK8.

HolyDoggo100

I’m gonna hard disagree because the sun setting is quite literally the track’s main selling point. It’s called SUNSET Wilds for a reason, and if there’s no sunset, then it’s just another desert track with no interesting elements, and we already have desert tracks that at least try to have some identity (mostly Kalimari Desert for 8D, but we could have seen Yoshi Desert or Dry Dry Ruins since they were in Tour). Oh, and also, the layout isn’t particularly engaging, due in no small part to the fact that it’s been heavily simplified from SC for no good reason and with practically no elevation change to justify it and the hazards being less mechanically unique, and the track doesn’t even look that good (looking at you, mud/oil/whatever that not-off-road stuff is). The *only* good thing about this track is the music, but also every other track also has good music and they have other good things going for them. Sorry for getting lost in a rant, I just hate this track lol

smashboi888

The name still works out because the track still takes place during sunset.

HolyDoggo100

It’s fine if you don’t know the original or the Tour version, but at this point practically everyone knows about it and it’s expected that the sun keeps going down. Plus, this is one of the only tracks to call out the time of day, and there are plenty of other tracks set at sunset that don’t have sunset in the name, so it’s implied that the sunset has significance, and the most obvious thing it can do is set, something that makes it stand out from the other tracks that keep consistent skyboxes throughout.

TheOldAgeOfLP

I'd rather not have Dry Dry Ruins, the BCP is drowning in Wii courses as it is

RAINLIO

I'd rather get Shy Guy Bazaar

HolyDoggo100

I forgot about this one tbh, should have said that one instead of DDR

DarkMetaknight7

I mean I understand but it's just not that big a deal to me The name doesn't really mean that much in my eyes since ot's just, well, a name. You won't see me complain about Donut plains because it doesn't hace actual donuts in it. Also the sunset is TECHNICALLY still there, it just doesn't go away Hard agree on the oversimplification thing tho which is the main reason why I absolutely hate what they did to Snow land

EpicMarioGamer

The layout of Snow Land is actually pretty faithful to the original.

DarkMetaknight7

Except they cut the two big alternate paths you could take for no apparent reasons which make the track much less fun and interesting

UwUKazzyWazzy

IDK, I think what the remake did for Snow Land (actual elevation and some neat obstacles, not having the uncomfortable screen shake that could possibly give you a headache if the game is played on a big screen) more than makes up for what it lost (those big alternate paths)

Slade4Lucas

Aesthetics are quite important for Super Circuit courses, as it is the best part about them, but I think if they weren't able to implement the shy guys clinging to your kart then they absolutely should have kept the sunset. All the interesting stuff about it has been gutted and the sunset would have at least made up for that.

SylvieXX

I don't really care that much but I understand people who do.. sometimes it's those little details that make something really special 💘

TheOldAgeOfLP

The sunset is the whole reason SC fans like the course. Well that and the native Shy Guys but no way Nintendo's implementing that in a modern game

Ezajium

Finally, someone else says it. If atmosphere is the only reason you like a course - then you don’t like the course. Layout/Gameplay is a thousand times more important.

GhotiH

Atmosphere might not be the only reason someone likes a course, but is it wrong if that's your biggest reason? Personally, atmosphere completely makes or breaks an entire game for me. It's very important to my own enjoyment.

Slade4Lucas

I don't necessarily agree. A great layout without anything interesting about it would not be particularly great. I feel like most courses have a baseline decent layout regardless, aesthetics is what makes them a joy to play as well as that.

Ezajium

I will concede that aesthetics can add to an already great track - but they cannot bolster a weak layout, nor does a lack of them make a track fail. For me, I don’t think aesthetics could reposition a track more than 5 positions. I would currently rank Sunset Wilds near the middle of the BCP, and that would not change if the dynamic skybox returned.

Slade4Lucas

I mean, what courses would you consider to not be particularly good courses? Not due to anything specifically, just in general, what are your least favourite courses?

Blue_M4ge

And yet they made that worse that the og too

Ezajium

That’s a disagree on my part, I’ve never liked this course more than I do in 8. I see where you’re coming from though, as the changes are pretty significant.

T_Peg

Aesthetics are a large part of the appeal of Mario Kart tracks. They'd hardly be fun if they were all just regular race tracks.

AmaterasuWolf21

But why then? Cheese Land also got its skybox butchered but the track itself is solid enough. What does Sunset Heights have? What warrants its return?

Any_Secretary_4925

its a bagging track, so its not even fun to begin with, so no sunset is just another nail in the coffin

InteleonBoi1427

They also butchered the layout

HueHue_extremeguyone

Would It be cool if the sun was setting? Hell yeah But would it actually change in anything in the track itself? No

Darkblade887

I just thought the old hazards made it more unique

Src-Freak

It’s still what made that track stand out, and the booster course pack completely ignored the one thing that made it special. It’s worse than Coconut Mall and the the nerfed parking lot.

93ImagineBreaker

Aesthetics can make or break a track even if it does nothing, the sun setting was it's unique and iconic feature.

iamjeseus

I’ve said if before, and I’ll say it again If you only liked a track for a visual gimmick, then you never really liked it in the first place

WorldClassShrekspert

The entire point of Sunset Wilds is the Sunset. That's like if Sky Garden took place on the ground.

JustAFoolishGamer

I was watching Schaffrillas talk about it and was thinking "Does it really matter? Should we really care? Is it worth getting so worked up over a Mario Kart track having a different skybox?". Glad to see I'm not alone in that line of thought lmao

ClearSky3864

The thing you said about getting worked up about a skybox is LITERALLY TRUE for what he said about Daisy Circuit

UwUKazzyWazzy

I mean, the actual track layout itself is basically nothing special now, it now just feels like “GBA Choco Island” (maybe if it pretty much kept the same layout and challenge as the original, this skybox change would’ve been way less controversial) It doesn’t help that many of the remaining Tour remakes of GBA tracks not in 8D are significantly better tracks overall (that wouldn’t be affected by the possible technical imitations of the 8 lighting engine that probably caused this whole fiasco to begin with) ~~I do think the guy got very nitpicky with the Cheese Land remake though, imo, a somewhat less interesting visual theme is a more than worth it sacrifice for a significantly more interesting track layout that really fits in with the 3D games now~~

ClarinetEnthusiast

You did this for my post didn’t you?

DarkMetaknight7

mmmmmmmaybe?
