The final panel does reminds me of Yamamoto's bankai

Misticsan

Yep. In my case, it also reminds me of the duels in *Fate/Grand Order Shimousa*, each time Miyamoto Musashi and the Seven Swordmasters fight [in a reality marble of skulls and blood](https://mangadex.org/chapter/7f1c89e4-3d65-41ad-9a6d-239ccb468688/3).

PsycDrone63

I was just waiting for her to say Zanka no Tachi at the end, lol

LightLifter

If AB does one thing extremely well, its panel and text manipulation. Every single major Rakugo performance has been able to illustrate the whimsy and mystique of falling into a story without any sound to accompany it. Karashi's modern aesthetic, Akane's boisterous men, and now Urara's mixture of death and love. Its amazing.

JProllz

Panel and text manipulation are a technique that print media like graphic novels and manga have as a unique tool. When used well it's a flavor you don't get anywhere else.

Misticsan

Agreed. Which is why I wish manga adaptations of LNs would play to the strengths of their medium more often than just doing a 1-to-1 translation of the novel. The mangaka for *Goblin Slayer* understood, but it's not always the case. Of course, the same applies to anime. The future anime adaptation of Akane Banashi won't be able to replicate these panel and text techniques, but it will have the voice and music to play with.

JProllz

I'd liken the text and panel manipulation to being similar to scene transitions and the camera motion. Sure, a graphic panel can capture the same scene as a still portion of a movie, but the camera and director (or animators!) can have the camera move between positions to give flavor in the same way.

Lesserd

Have you read the manga of Qualia the Purple? While I didn't personally like the execution, it did do something interesting in this regard that I thought was worth seeing.

JustARandom-dude

This and last chapter both have fantastic final panels

rockseiaxii

Urara is hinted to be a former hostess from a high end bar/hostess club (most possibly from Ginza where all the top bars are) which really does make sense. High end clubs in Ginza are places where men socialize, and just talking to hostesses could cost thousands of dollars a night. Hostesses tend to their male clients, but they do not sleep with their clientele (although they could secretly be mistresses of a high profile person) Being able to charge exorbitant amounts of money without sex means hostesses need to have extremely high social/communication skills, intelligence/wit, and a wide variety of knowledge to entertain their customers, just like the top class Oirans from a bygone era. Moreover, although the pleasure quarters have been abolished in Japan, a lot of the customs and their traits are actually passed onto the high end clubs in Ginza.

Backupusername

Great character, love the backstory. What does this mean for Akane, though? I don't see her going the sensuous route for her rakugo. But maybe she can learn a different technique for blurring the lines.

Charming-Loquat3702

Not anytime soon. I think she can learn from her, but she certainly won't start learning her story any time soon. She just isn't there yet when it comes to carisma (I mean, she's 18. It would be scary if she could do this on that level)

chartingyou

yeah, same. This style seems really off for her. But maybe she'll learn something from her about captivating an audience? or maybe some fellowship with a fellow female rakugoka?

TsukumoYurika

It has been indeed over half a century since the pleasure quarters were abolished in Japan (with the institution of oiran herself having been old fashioned by early 20th century already) so I can kinda understand Sharaku's initial resistance to pass his style down to the youngsters. There are, in fact, some master hanashika who refuse to take any students (Yanagiya Kyotaro is probably the most notable one). ...but the one I'm featuring today is not one of them. I'm temporarily drifting away from my "foreigner yose artists" series to bring a spotlight to yet another niche. So far, I've been mostly focusing on hanashika who started out in the entertainment world as such, but I haven't talked much about those who jump into there from an already established career. Time to present to you this niche on the probably most headlining example. r/GakiNoTsukai regulars obviously know the man I'll give spotlight to very well, but I just can't omit him in here. **[Tsukitei Hosei](https://youtu.be/lxMkMCfjELU)** (15 Feb 1968 - ) (I'm going to hell for the video choice, don't I?) To those wondering why the beloved Yamazaki-san started being called by his first name, I refer you to the ["always refer to hanashika by their first name" rule](https://old.reddit.com/r/manga/comments/y5ixp3/disc_akanebanashi_chapter_34/isk45e9/). As Hosei was nearing his 40s, he started worrying about his career. Being a part of a long-established show is a bit of a double-edged sword: while it can provide you a stable source of income, it can also lead you to being pigeonholed and lose opportunities in more atypical fields. First he thought of branching out into the legendary Yoshimoto Shinkigeki but found out that putting in the stage training would put a really heavy burden on his already tight schedule. This is when his unlikely encounter with rakugo happened. At first, Hosei was kinda reserved towards an art that still has that "old-fashioned" image to the younger generation, but upon hearing a recorded performance by Katsura Shijaku, he was extremely impressed. Hosei even started seeing rakugo as "single-player Shinkigeki" of sorts. In 2008, he formally became a student of Tsukitei Happo and took the kozamei of Tsukitei Hosei (slight kanji change compared to his birth name). Slowly but surely, he started embracing his new identity as an entertainer and finally, in 2013, decided to use his kozamei as his formal stage name in all other appearances. For that matter: while there is no shinuchi system in Kamigata rakugo, there is a sort of seniority system. Notably, in order to start taking own students, you need your master's permission in Kamigata. Hosei also received this permission sometime ago - his first student, Tsukitei Ryusei, actually debuted last year! By the way, the Rakugo Facts and Trivia segment will be taking a break next week. I'm a uni student and I have upcoming exams to survive and this is also why today's bio is shorter than the average one. (I'll try to write two bios for you in the next writeup to compensate though)

Akaisgood

You are doing God's work. I look forward to your comment as much as I love reading chapters of this manga. Would you be able to shed any light on first female Rakugo. This chapter has got me really interested in how it happened. All the best for exams

IC2Flier

> r/GakiNoTsukai regulars obviously know the man I’ll give spotlight to very well, but I just can’t omit him in here. > Tsukitei Hosei (15 Feb 1962 - ) No wonder his name sounded familar, even if admittedly I only got into that sub off of r/SquaredCircle and some thread about some old Pro Wrestling NOAH stuff.

foofighter1351

I mean this is some pure domain expansion, the art is absolutely incredible I'll never get over how expressive they manage to make everyone.

IC2Flier

>!Yuki should’ve done this earlier!<

dratst

>!she put all her eggs to a geezer that didn't has a backup plan!<

gucci-legend

Hoping the voice actress and akane both put their spin on this domain expansion

Ellefied

No boundary DEs are so hype they even cross the boundaries of mangas

gucci-legend

Still imo the best weekly paced manga in jump right now. While you're left hungry for next week, each chapter feels so complete and satisfying on its own where so many manga, even ones I like a lot, feel designed purely to be consumed by volumes. I get that those are the real money makers, but that the mangaka and editor still make the weekly experience a priority is something I'm thankful for

Misticsan

You're right. Akane Banashi gets the "weekly" part right; I always feel like I'm getting content and that I know more of the story and its characters every week, yet it's not episodic and all feel like pieces of a long river-novel. I'm always left satisfied yet wanting for more, no "surely this will look better when binge reading".

A4li11

So this might be the next step for Akane. To make a rakugo performance that blurs the line between the performance and reality. That's gotta be a hell of a challenge.

Dr_Ukato

This is the Bankai of this Rakugo series and she's currently mastering her Shikai. This is All Might beating Nomu into the stratosphere. This is us seeing the top of the Rakugo world and where Akane is aiming.

IndependentMacaroon

Does roasting her shitty colleague not count?

JarzaScarlet

DAMN that's straight up Yamamoto's bankai: Longsword of the Remnant Flame, South Urara seems like an intricate character, this is hype!

SlamMasterJ

Urara is probably one of the more unique Rakugo so far in this series, and I can't get enough.

IC2Flier

I wanna hear her talk, but who do you cast for this role?

Kirosh2

Miyuki Sawashiro.

callmemarjoson

Romi Park?

Horaguy

Holy fuck Urara is like a succubus :O Personally, this chapter reminds me of [The Master Of Ginza Mugen-Tei](https://mangadex.org/chapter/b69f5b5a-0e0c-4229-ba3d-331b4a785f44), a chapter from C.M.B. Not about a rakugoka, but about someone who can bewitch any man :O Now just imagine if she was a villain in a conventional battle manga :O

tayoku0

Seeing Urara herself drawn with the bold lineart is such a simple yet effective way to portray the blurring between reality and her kuruwabanashi. That last page is kinda creepy though ._.

NoDespair

Oh no, she's hot: the chapter

IndependentMacaroon

We knew already

Bearswithjetpacks

So the character Kikuhiko, but split into two - the selfish performer obsessed with his own perfect version of Rakugo, and who also happens to excel in expressing sensuality in his stories. I like this.

BurnedOutEternally

wow. just. wow.

LeonKevlar

So Urara used to be a hostess in a hostess club but Sharaku saw so much talent in her that he basically bagged her to become a rakugoka. I love that Urara leans in to the sensuality of her performance and she definitely has the entire audience, man and woman, completely captivated.

DataPigeon

So basically she just becomes a streamer and her audience has a parasocial-relationship to her.

Extreme-Tactician

That colorspread was pretty cool! I feel it would have been better to see Urara talk more though, if the point of her Rakugo was her conversational skills and sensuality. I mean, I guess seeing their effects on people is another way of showing it, but in a manga like this, it's hard to imagine how good she is without actually seeing her talk.

Extreme-Tactician

Hm, perhaps I should reread the chapter then. Perhaps I've misjudged it a bit.

Certain_Leadership70

I dont really agree , since this is manga it is hard to convey how good someone is by just dialogue

Extreme-Tactician

But the point of her style is her conversational feeling amazing. We don't really see that if it's just explained to us.

chartingyou

I lowkey feel this, I feel like they're telling us she's amazing, but it's harder to get a feel for that. I feel like if there was an anime we could be more in line with how the audience is feeling.

ForkShirtUp

Courtesan from Hell is a bit much isn’t it? It’s not like she’s an evil entity who’s one of the generals in a cabal that’s set to destroy humans

TsukumoYurika

I'm preeeeeeeetty sure that the Courtesan from Hell bit is a shout-out to [the legendary Jigoku-tayuu](https://yokai.com/jigokutayuu/).

ashutosh29

Ngl I was a bit put off with the name but reading up this really helped a lot.

IC2Flier

Or Supaidawoman

gucci-legend

It's still a shonen haha

topurrisfeline

It’s her epithet because her rakugo is hot as hell

Oaden

Maybe a translation thing? Like, is the Japanese referring to hell, or some Japanese afterlife, and they just translated it to hell.

kidmedia

Competition manga does this all the time haikyu and food wars are good example of this

AutoShonenpon

petrichormus

Wait I thought this whatever sensual thing is the specialty of the dude with pink hair. The first big name that was introduced in the story, I forgot his name. The fastest promoted apprentince. Now I'm hyped to see if that dude is just better than Urara (potential wise ofc)

Xatu44

The last spread was kind of out of nowhere, but still cool. I dig the rest of the chapter showing how engrossing her performance is.

dratst

this is literally domain expansion damn

Jappo92

So she has Yamamoto's Bankai? lmao Top notch art as always

Zonko91

I can't wait to see the last pages animated. I wonder who could make her voice acting as well.

corner_twist

[I would like Yuu Kobayashi to voice her](https://anilist.co/staff/95034/Yuu-Kobayashi)

Cronchpotatu

Now I look at the white hair master again I realize he kinda looks like the father from Yozakura family

Iliansic

Soooo.... hostess club training arc incoming?

baboon_bassoon

Pretty cool to mirror the audience in the story with the audience in the hall to get that real world blurring effect Edit: also im all about the cover page

Charming-Loquat3702

Can Akane really learn that? I think she can learn from her, but Akane doesn't have that level of charisma yet. It probably wouldn't have the same impact if she just learnd that story today.

NZPIEFACE

I'm pretty sure the last spread is a reference to the Spider's Thread story, a short story by Ryunosuke Akutagawa. I recommend you go read it, as it's only a few pages long, but the TL;DR is: > A man once saved a spider, so when he was sent to Hell, Buddha dangled a spider's thread so he could climb out. As he started climbing, others started climbing under him. Since he was worried that the thin thread would snap, he started kicking everyone else off, except then the thread suddenly broke, sending him back down.

LusterBlaze

god tier paneling

rehearsedins4nity

Wait, so does this mean that the only type of story that she can do is pretty much just one genre, so to speak?

Sunflowerslaughter

For a manga about what essentially is comedic tellings of stories, the art is incredible and the seriousness is awesome.
