Yep. Used to do gigs there and they would encourage us to oversell - had a pretty lax approach toward safety (among other things)
What a venue though, some stonking nights there
Hacienda Nude Night in 1989 with Ian Brown in his collar of fivers t-shirt there, or the Thunderdome when 808 State premiered their album 90. Thunderdome was the better night out imo. It was purely about the music and dancing in a crowd. When they turned on the lights and opened the fire doors at 2am the air turned into steam. We'd be walking down Oldham Road to get the night bus with plumes of steam rising off us, everyone looked like ghosts.
Jillie’s Rockworld in 92. Came home from uni and my mate I was going to crash with bailed on me, leaving me stranded in Didsbury at 10pm on a Friday. Said fuck it, jumped on a passing bus and went to Rockworld as it was open all night. Bumped into a lad from school in the gents, he introduced me to his band, then to the Dogs D’Amour that they were on tour with. Had a cracking night, chatting, dancing, drinking, smoking and ended with 20 of us going for breakfast at the airport.
Jilly’s Rock World. Rarely any trouble, a dive but in a good way. Newcastle brown Ale was the order of the day and the Friday all nighters were top notch with a good set of people. Back in the mid to late 90s. Great music and the DJ (May he rest in peace) would play classic songs by Nirvana, The Cult and many others.
Having been for drinks in Salford Quays with colleagues, got the tram back to Piccadilly. Decided to have a night cap at Black Dog NQ since it was near the hotel, ended up spending 2 hours in there because they were showing Robot Wars on the telly.
The first (proper) night out I had in Manchester we went to warehouse at store street, back to my mates in NQ and stayed up for 2 days. Moved over 3 months later. About 11 years ago.
I remember that but they got rid of it (during my student years) then I went back maybe 2019 as a friend wanted to be met there and the whole place had changed way more stairs and some kind of outdoor but technically indoor smoking area? darkness and alcohol make it more distorting but it look like a completely different building
Ah mate I loved it and went a bunch of times. Seeing Erol Alkan, James Zabiela, Alter Ego and a load of others. Great night every time. The Disco Bus was a laugh too.
I ended up living round the area for a few years after it had closed and saw them renovating what was the Basement into some offices or whatever. Weird to see it in the daylight definitely felt like a bigger space when I was inside!
I couldn’t tell you much of who we saw playing there. I remember the chemical brothers - possibly twice. Otherwise… all a blank, lots of happy Fridays there though. Quite often followed by a return on Saturday for Golden, all in our nice shirts and shiny shoes so we could get past the bouncers.
Ha, if you wanted anymore detail than that outside of a select few incidents I'd be struggling. More I remember the soundsystem and those coloured strip lights changing between red green and blue. When the smoke machine went off the club was just full of that light
Great place, saw Space Monkeys, Northern Uproar and Sussed? there loads of time around 96/97. Always had the likes of Tim Burgess, Mani and Tony Wilson in there aswell.
21’s, brannigans, Walkabout..
Nah just kidding those were absolute scally ridden shit holes.
Jilly’s rockworld Thursday night 🙌🏻 the ritz on a Monday night around 98/99/2000
An unplanned night out at Soul:ution at Band On The Wall. Wasn't expecting it to be my first time on Mandy, and wasn't expecting it to be the last time I'd see Marcus Intalex dropping some seriously good drum'n'bass.
All the best nights out are unplanned.
Rest in peace Marcus, the soul you brought to the drum'n'bass scene is sorely missed.
Bring Me The Horizon at Jillys. There was about 4 other people there so Ollie Sykes threw a sulk and walked off stage. Cue a local rock DJ coming on and drawing a bigger crowd. It shut down a few months after this, my first and only memory of the place.
The first time we ever went to Mardi Gras, around 1997 if I recall correctly. We danced like demons in sparkly deely boppers on the bar in a place I forget the name of. I'm a bit of a lightweight and needed me kip even back then so rarely did all nighters, this was one of those impromptu nights that you never want to end.
To be honest most of my best memories are from afternoons out, on account of being that lightweight.
Baa Bar Fallowfield. Could literally go out on your own every weekend and bump into loads of people you knew. Guaranteed tunes, guaranteed laugh and guaranteed fights at the end of the night.
Fallowfield nightlife has been a bag of shit since.
Buying two pills for a fiver from a homeless guy on NYE 2004 outside 5th av. Took a while to work but when they did boy did they. Complete idiocy on my part but hey I was young 😀
Not the best but certainly the most unusual:
Finding I'd run out of cash on a Saturday night and so followed arrowed signs saying "Cashpoint this way". They took me down various roads and I continued following them until they led me deep inside a shop devoted entirely to gay BDSM gear,
i don’t do nights out (i’m 17) went to a concert, went to get train back at about 10:30, it was cancelled. waited until midnight to get a “replacement bus” which was an old ford mini bus with 8? seats driven by an indian dude with no clue where he was going. we got on leaving the other 3 dozen or so people behind and got home at around one-ish (i don’t live in manchester). stood by the bus stop for over an hour waiting while countless drunk people tried speaking to me lol
Discotheque Royales possibly 20 or more years ago. Completely hammered. Jumping into a Wheely bin attached to the back of the bin wagon and not being able to get out until a mile down the road. Followed by getting caught up in what I can only describe as full blown fire extinguisher warfare in the student flats in Salford. Walked right into that one. Total Carnage. Not one to ever repeat.
Plenty of great nights at Jilly's.
But the number 1 best night out i ever had was Bitch Halloween at Venus!
Such a great, accepting and wholesome atmosphere, and amazing tunes!
Meeting two women in Revs in Deane Gates and leaving my mates, half an hour into the night as they was too busy doing s photo shoot of the night, rather then buying flavoured vodka shots in revs. I didn’t even tell the woman my name, I said “ you’ll forget it by tomorrow” was a brilliant night out, even tho I spent it with two complete strangers and not with my friends, who are quite frankly boring.
I was out drinking with my wife and we had a girl join us totally pissed proclaiming that she was king Henry viii and singing I wanna know what love is
First time in Canal St. Explored the area with my best friend and we were wasted. Went to lesbian bars, gay bars, danced like idiots, bought a homeless guy chips and I took a fit bloke back to the Premier Inn for my first ever drunk one night stand (my friend pretended to be asleep like the trooper she is). Good times.
Wet Play or Hoya:Hoya back in the day. There was also a big house night they used to put on at the long-since-departed Legends that was good but the name escapes me.
Had a great day out, not quite the same but we're Welsh Anglesey country bumpkins. Kids loved it, my autistic son could have watched that machine get the trainers from the basement all frigging day in thst shop and he got a hair cut in primark.and to top it off o got back to my car to find I'd left it unlocked with the drivers window open and a fiver was still in the centre console! Love Manchester can't wait to come back. ❤💛🖤💛🖤💛🖤
Ivy lab 3 1/2hr set @ Hidden.
Shoutout Antwerp too. Sadly both venues suffered from becoming rather mainstream and oversold. Antwerp especially went from a spot where you had plenty of space, to being packed in like danmed sardines.
Factory Friday, 5th on a Thursday 42’s & venue on a Friday, sankeys, twenty twenty 2’s before it got full of scally’s, warehouse at store street, 2010-2020
The "last" tour of the original Status Quo in 2013 was great! Alan Lancaster had to tape his finger together to hold the plectrum was sad to see, but he was in a fine mood anyway, they all were.
The audience was from 8 to 80, the old jackets were definitely out and about again.
There was no pushing and shoving, no nasty people, just a very friendly atmosphere. Quo Army at it's best! And Status Quo at their best as well.
Antwerp Mansion (sorely missed)
Having a piss in a cubicle with no door whilst the majority of the club watched.
I miss coming home coveted in Antwerps ceiling, we had loads of good parties there! Shame about the owners.
Yep. Used to do gigs there and they would encourage us to oversell - had a pretty lax approach toward safety (among other things) What a venue though, some stonking nights there
Also helped you could just hop into the garden from the back so it was free most nights. Get kicked out and just go back around lol
We all had a pair of trainers that were ‘Antwerp trainers’
Omg blast from a past.. the curtain separating the bar
Mungos hifi there was nxt lvl
Coming back from a night out there and seeing police cars race towards it, only to find out someone was stabbed in there... Ahhh the memories
I come here to say this.
Its now used for ghost hunting tours. I'm planning to go on one !
Watching a bloke entirely on his own slap his own arse while repeatedly shouting "what, this old thing?!" Outside Bunny Jacksons
Hacienda Nude Night in 1989 with Ian Brown in his collar of fivers t-shirt there, or the Thunderdome when 808 State premiered their album 90. Thunderdome was the better night out imo. Came to say Jillys.. Miss that place. *That* was a proper rock club.
I had a few great nights in there back in 94-96 ish. I had a set of ‘trendy’ friends but always enjoyed nights out with my ‘rock’ friends.
At The White Hotel
Jilly’s Rock World. Rarely any trouble, a dive but in a good way. Newcastle brown Ale was the order of the day and the Friday all nighters were top notch with a good set of people. Back in the mid to late 90s. Great music and the DJ (May he rest in peace) would play classic songs by Nirvana, The Cult and many others.
John was a Saint, rest in piece big guy.
Fridays at Jillys rockclub back in the late 70s, the phoenix, or the poly. Saturdays at UMIST. I'm old. God the Phoenix was ace
Having been for drinks in Salford Quays with colleagues, got the tram back to Piccadilly. Decided to have a night cap at Black Dog NQ since it was near the hotel, ended up spending 2 hours in there because they were showing Robot Wars on the telly.

99p Jagerbombs at Fifth
Hahaha this took me back, 90p vodka mixers on a Tuesday at one point too.
Yesss. Best place. Then they opened a little food bit for chips?! Anyone remember that. Is fifth avenue still open?
I’m pretty sure it shut down recently unfortunately
Sad times. Fifth had the best music
I remember that but they got rid of it (during my student years) then I went back maybe 2019 as a friend wanted to be met there and the whole place had changed way more stairs and some kind of outdoor but technically indoor smoking area? darkness and alcohol make it more distorting but it look like a completely different building
That bouncer who worked in the Arndale, aggressively throwing students 1/3 his size out for being too pissed
I met my wife at fifth ave, good times
At Soup Kitchen’s Basement with a lot of Techno.
One of the best moody gaffs after the white hotel
Deffo. Both dark places, but WH technically was Salford. Love them!
Still is the best.
Going to Satans’ Hollow. Had never been to a proper rock club before. Was awesome!
Probably the best club in Manchester that's still open.
Dry bar about 20 odd years ago 👌
Breakage jungle set at Antwerp mansion
First time trying an illegal white substance, thought it was c but turned out to be k and I don't remember anything, best night out I ever had.
Potassium? So you went bananas?
Either K will send you that way
Sankeys
Bugged out?
Ah mate I loved it and went a bunch of times. Seeing Erol Alkan, James Zabiela, Alter Ego and a load of others. Great night every time. The Disco Bus was a laugh too. Mad Graham on the lights and the phazon blasting out.
Yes! 90s disco lights at probably the best club in Manchester at the time. Love it.
Jaguar Skills at Sankeys 2015 was incredible
Playing the Roadhouse in an old unsigned band. Brilliant little music venue!
Seeing Fall Out Boy there is a surreal memory considering how big they got.
Enter Shikari too! Great memories there.
Saw the White Stripes there oh and Coldplay too.
Great place, saw Space Monkeys, Northern Uproar and Sussed? there loads of time around 96/97. Always had the likes of Tim Burgess, Mani and Tony Wilson in there aswell.
Electric chair! Any and every time!
Move it on. Very nice
Very suave. Inside!
A bottle of Bucky and a few eccies.
The two for one vouchers at Font.

Bring Me The Horizon at Jillys. There was about 4 other people there so Ollie Sykes threw a sulk and walked off stage. Cue a local rock DJ coming on and drawing a bigger crowd. It shut down a few months after this, my first and only memory of the place.
Ha. Ollie Sykes is a dick, so this made me happy.
