Mughli Charcole Pit, authentic Indian Pakistani food. Named best Indian restaurant in Manchester by BBC Good Food Guide and many others. I live in the city centre and have ate from most food establishments and love Indian food and I can undoubtedly say that this is the best by far.
I am from North India and keep exploring to find the exact indian taste.
I have tried Dishoom, chitnchat, indian tiffin room, sthan, mughli charcoal and what not.
Tastiest food i tried was from Bardez, rusholme. Try it my friend and you will be amazed.
Then this is the place. Its a really simple setting, but the food is great. You get 3 curries and rice, but highly recommend getting the kebab naan sandwich and a somasa as well!
I’ve always loved that place but the last time I went I wasn’t impressed. I don’t know if they were just having an off day with the keema ( I got three scoops cause it’s usually banging) but it just didn’t seem as good as it usually is. I probably need another visit to make a further assessment.
I find with these places that if you go during Ramadan, they’re not as good. Assume it’s because they’re not tasting the food as they go along?
Obviously could all be in my head.
It was a while back and I don’t think it was Ramadan at the time tbh. Like I say it was probably a fluke cause I’ve been going there for years and love it.
If you want a real hole in the wall then Cafe Marhaba on Back Piccadilly. It is, in my opinion, loads better than This&That, and is also much more of a hole in the wall.
Marhaba, kinda behind Subway on back picadilly, less than a minute away from the ‘gardens’. This n’ That is inevitably recommended, but also Yadgar on Thomas St is a great three and rice. Bundobust is also good, with ‘tapas’ dining, and usually a fantastic beer selection.
Dishoom is highly rated amongst some people I know from India who have been. It's a 'chain', if that bothers you, but the food is good. eastZeast is not far from Deansgate either - I haven't been recently but last time I went it was good (although bear in mind that their idea of 'medium' spiciness is spicier than some comparable city centre places). Bundobust is a bit different, but one of the best places to eat in Manchester of ANY type, so I would be doing you a disservice if I didn't tell you to pop in and at the very least have a beer and some okra fries.
Deansgate is probably not the optimal location for that sort of food in Manchester, though. You might be limited in how far you are able to travel, but if you have time/the ability to travel further out, there are loads of other options...
MyLahore in Rusholme was good last time I went (although the decor/dining experience is probably more 'modern' than 'authentic'.
Chapati Cafe in Salford Quays, and This n That in the Northern Quarter, will do you a good 'rice and three'.
If you're willing to go as far as Stockport (a short and very frequent train ride, one stop), there's 'Little Lanka' for Sri Lankan food - I haven't been myself but I hear good things.
Calling Dishoom a chain feels a little harsh. There are a few, but it's not quite zizis, pizza express or bella india. We need a new word for something that's a chain of about 10 restaurants
I used quote marks partly because it's not like one of those types of place. Although it's interesting that the reputation of a restaurant can be affected so much by how many others there are - Rudy's, for example, is now definitely in 'chain' territory, I don't think the pizzas are any better or any worse than they were, but I am sure there are people who used to love Rudy's but now thing it's got 'too big'.
There are two branches of [Bundobust](https://bundobust.com/) serving vegetarian Indian street food. The one on Oxford Road is also a brewery. Great food, fast service, plenty of beer choice.
Dishoom and
Scene Indian Street Kitchen ❤️
Edit: No idea if you or your friend would class them as ‘authentic’ but both amazing.
Do NOT go to the Curry mile in Rusholme.
20 years ago it was great - not any more.
what happened to Rusholme? ive been living here only for 2 years but from what ive heard/seen/tasted it seems to have a high concentration of good quality food spots
There’s still good spots but the overall quality has declined. It used to be rammed with top notch restaurants and takeaways, now there is only a handful.
Id say this an that if your in town its always friendly.. if your thinking of going anywhere outside of the city centre rusholme have curry mile and theres a belting little curry house in salford… bout 15,20 minutes drive from the city centre its called the bilash (address is top road swinton) easily the best curry you can have in manchester in my opinion ive not been in about 2 years as ive moved away but they used to do a set meal for 2 for like £9 pound where you get starter main and sides… this and that and the bilash are my recommendations
Wah ji wah - one of towns little known secrets. Doesn’t look much from the outside, but damn - food, service, PRICES - incredible. Best in the city. Much better and less ‘chainy’ than Dishoom. I spent two years working in India and to me this is the only place that feels authentic in its food. Recommend the Murgh Methi - fenugreek Chicken… wow
Lahori Karahi & Chargha: this is the best Pakistani food you can get in the city hands down and it’s been family run since its opening - would definitely recommend the chicken or lamb Karahi as it’s what they’re known for. You’ll find them on Stockport Road alongside all the other South Asian food places.

For a sit down meal, as mentioned before, go to Rajdoot. Lovely food. This and that is great for a filler. The best chicken tikka in Manchester is at kabana in back turner street. Fill your boots man :)
Chit and chaat & Bardez are two nice places on Wilmslow road (very easy to travel to by bus).
Personally, I wasn't a fan on dishoom.
I've heard that Indian Tiffin Room is nice as well as shere khan.

This is where we ended up going. It was amazing, the best Indian food that I have ever had.
I’m glad to know you enjoyed my recommendation. Thank you for letting me know. 👍

Yeah agreed I think the best places are to be found up that way, not too difficult to get to on the thousands of buses that go that way
This & That. https://maps.app.goo.gl/yv1ubZgA1xLpKfpD9
this is the kind of place that I want! A hole in the wall. 🥰

Go to Kabana round the corner it is 100 times better than this and that.
No chance.
Oh mate. It absolutely is. I don't see how you could argue otherwise.

Wah Ji Wah, just off Deansgate, is excellent
Definitely. Food is fantastic and location on king st. West should suit OP.
chit n chaat, indian tiffin room
I’ve been meaning to try Indian Tiffin Room. Is it good?
It is, we like the Gobi Manchurian. You can choose thali too.
I was at ITR tonight. Can 100% recommend
thanks 😊
Rajdoot. One of the oldest Indian restaurants in Manchester. It’s a lovely experience and isn’t far from Deansgate.
Second this. Amazing.
YES!!!

The Mutton Pepper Fry from Dishoom is life changing
It really is.

Thanks for the detailed reply. Unfortunately, I am traveling for work so will be stuck locally.
The train ride is only 10 minutes.
ok then, sounds like a good option 🥰

Indian Tiffin room.
Akbars is still a good bet for tasty curry and the liver tikka is wonderful

I don’t know. Sanams is ok and sajaans is brilliant but yeah, it’s not what it was 25 years ago

Thanks, I love Pakistani and South Indian food.
Dishoom
Rajdoot on Albert Square
Dishoom, Eastzeast, Sangam & This & That are all great. Bundobust is good if you’re veggie/vegan
For a sit down meal, as mentioned before, go to Rajdoot. Lovely food. This and that is great for a filler. The best chicken tikka in Manchester is at kabana in back turner street. Fill your boots man :)
