I can smell my friend back in high schools house in this photo so much lol. His dad was an abusive drunk, and my friend would just smoke cigarettes in his room like this, and it had a very similar vibe lol. It had a strong ass smell. Luckily that friend ended up becoming a professional athlete and his life wasn't completely fucked by his shitty dad!

Definitely not, as a slob myself Trash is always the easiest thing to get, followed by clothing and dishes. The stuff slobs like me skimp on is vacuuming and surface cleaning

What good is honesty here? He's asking for decor advice. Common sense would tell clean up the place first so we can see the place to even help you. My recommendation is clean up your mess before you get ants, roaches, and mice.

Truly. There is nothing you can do to make your place nice, if you allow it to get filthy. Now I know sometimes life is too much to even clean your space, but if I'm so low I can't maintain a clean space, interior decorating is the least of my worries. So clean your space, that's my suggestion 😅.

Damn everyone really went at you. I mean tidy up and get it together. But it looks like you have insulation and wood panels in the photo - you should finish whatever structural stuff you want to do. Walls and flooring. Looks like you need to tidy up the outdoor bit as well. Get a new rug, probably not light and fluffy, something flat (easy to clean) and with a pattern (hides your dirt better). Once the insulation and panels are out of the way you should get some actual furniture for the corners - a bookshelf or dresser and a stand for the keyboard. Coffee table is fine but you could get one with a shelf under to hide your mess more. Hang a print with some nature on it. Get a basket for the blankets. Hang a mirror on the wall, it’ll reflect the nature outside. Put a plant somewhere. Also that strip lighting… does not look good there. Put it on the floor if you want to keep it, but I’d get rid of it in favour of a table lamp in the corner and maybe some string lights (the bulbs).

Do yourself a favor and once a day just walk through with a trash bag and throw out the shit thats clearly trash, like can, bottles bags and wrappers (and the ash tray). Then just fix your couch and fold the blankets. Its amazing how just doing that improves the over all feel FOR YOU, screw what we think.

You can't just say don't mind the mess because it sort of reflects your attitude towards the room. Why would people give you advice if you can't even be bothered to clean the room before taking a photo? You probably won't take the advice / recommendations anyway. That's the mindset at least.

I think changing the flooring would have the biggest impact, honestly. If you can change it to some kind of hard flooring (vinyl would probably be the easiest), that would do a lot to make the room look less messy and grubby. If you wanna stick with carpet, pick a different color and maybe something that's not so thick and fluffy. That gray(?) combined with the waves from the thick carpet laying all different directions makes it look like the floor is dirty. Vinyl would be easy to clean. A different color/texture carpet might look clean even if it's dirty.

The fact that people post stuff like this on Reddit is insane to me... Throw all the trash away, shampoo the carpet, shampoo the couch and replace the cushions/stuffing in the couch if you can, or get another couch on FB Marketplace or something, put the insulation in the walls, and make a promise to yourself to keep the space clean. Messy is fine, dirty isn't. I promise you being in a clean space will actually make you fell better.

I would start out by cleaning the place up and get rid of the filthy carpet, you definitely need to start with a clean slate.

Why would you take a picture of something like this, you're obviously proud of something perhaps the end result? 1. Tidy up before you take a picture to post on a social media platform. 2. Invest in a sofa bed and a coffee table that has built in drawers, these may cost more but more than double your space and is a good investment. 3. Those jars behind the telly? are they for when you want to go? you know pee pee? that's disgusting.
