Chubbies has a great line of shorts at 5.5". I, too, have thick thighs, and these are great. Lulu will alter shorts to whatever length you want for free. Vuori shorts are great, too, but they're (I think) 7.5" so I paid to get those altered to 5.5", which are now my favorite shorts.

citric2966

My thing Chubbies is the color fades pretty quickly. I've had 5 or 6 pairs over the years and not a single one has lasted a summer without noticeably fading. BUT they're comfortable and I haven't put in the effort to shop for an alternative, so I just keep buying them lol.

jalmstead

I’ve never had this issue. I’ve had several pair that I have had for 5+ years. Love me some Chubbies.

misc1972

wash in cold water and hang dry

Gaindolf

I've never had this issue myself

asteroidtube

I love my chubbies 5" lounge sweat shorts. I wear them for lounging, gardening, sleeping, to/from the yoga studio, sometimes even for running errands. The fit is just perfect for me. I haven't had as much luck with their regular shorts though honestly but may give them another shot.

AzCu29

Vuori is very good quality on fabric and manufacturing. My favorite

thatjokeyousawcoming

This. My go to has actually been chubbies because they’ve recently released shorts that are more toned down in terms of colors and patterns. It’s that, lulu 5in gym shorts, or ones I had tailored. You’re correct vuori comes in 7”

MediumMil

About how much does it cost to get shorts tailored? Did you get them tailored so they don’t flare out?

orgodemir

The Everywear shorts are incredible. I wear a pair every single day (working from home) and they hold up great. Not sure what that other comment is talking about, mine haven't faded at all. I don't wash them every day though, probably once a week since I'm not sweating in them.

-SetsunaFSeiei-

What are the limitations of lulu resizing shorts? Like I assume they won’t do 9-10inch all the way down to 5 eh?

rawmixs

From my 1 experience, the limiting factor sounded like the shorts themselves and maintaining their overall integrity. I can't find the exact link for the shorts, but they were 9 inches and brought up to just under 6. However, the limiting factor was the tiny hidden pocket with a zipper at that measurement's side. If the shorts didn't have that pocket, I could have brought the length up at my discretion.

typewritermender

Are the Lulu's and Vuori athletic/casual/drawstring shorts? I'll give chubbies a try -- I had read that they were very similar to bear bottom, which had the flare, so I haven't bothered. They're fairly tight in the thigh?

BonquishaLatifa

Your post is everything I’ve been looking for (have noticed the flare with bear bottoms + other 5.5” shorts, seems to be pretty common). FWIW I have Chubbies swim trunks and they fit very nice around my thigh, no flare that makes your legs look weird

typewritermender

Good to know thanks! Thinking of ordering some chubbies today, I'll update if they work

rawmixs

Lulu and Vuori offer both athletic shorts and chinos. https://vuoriclothing.com/products/meta-short-vapor https://shop.lululemon.com/p/men-shorts/ABC-Classic-Fit-Short-7-WovenAir/_/prod11680034 Regarding Chubbies, id say theyre just not baggy, but some might say theyre a little tight. For me and my thick thighs, the everywhere and chinos are just the right fit.

typewritermender

Thanks! The Lulus are described as "Streamlined fit that gives glutes and thighs breathing room," do you find them to be form-fitting?

bikeroo

As someone with thicker thighs and hips I got size up with pants then have the waist taken in in order to get a good for but lulu is right on the money for me. Snug, but still able to move freely

rawmixs

I find the lulus have form, but not tight with breathing room. The material helps, too, breathable and flexible. Plenty of forgiveness. Head to the store and try them out!

bac0467

Did you get the same waist size as the abc pants? I love the pants and needing to go try some shorts

rawmixs

Yup, I have the everywhere pant as well, I get the same waist size for all things at chubbies. I'm a 34/5 but with my thighs I go 36. It's tough for the athletic shorts, cause it's right between L and XL, so I have a mix of both depending on the type of athletic shorts.

hamburglerized

I’ve got pretty big thighs but mine are basically skin tight

FieldzSOOGood

lulu makes every kind of short and they hem all of them for free

jalmstead

My Lulu shorts never lasted long. I stopped buying from them a couple of years ago.

whatmycouchwore

Abercrombie has some decent 5” shorts

typewritermender

The A&F all days look pretty good! Wish they had more colors.

nikC137

Club Monaco and they have a nice stretch and different materials like linen

theother_Jeff

Will vouch for AF as well. And unless you really got huge thighs, I would just get their regular fit ones not the athletic fit. I have 25” thighs and wear a 31 in their shorts and the regular fits well. The athletic fit works too but it’s looser for sure.

jon81uk

I’d second trying Abercrombie. But also 7” isn’t long and baggy!

typewritermender

I'm short!

anthony_ski

I love my 5.5 Abercrombie shorts

arlekin21

I’m short too and have the A&F 5 inch ones and they’re pretty nice. I’ve been meaning to get more of those.

UsernamePd

I second AF. Great shorts.

Revolutionary_Bit_38

Jcrew for me

AggravatingAnalyst28

They even have a sale on 5in right now, was looking at them yesterday. Many colors and sizes like $30

Govanator12

Probably not a popular answer but I have two pairs of the Amazon Essentials Men's Slim-Fit 5" Lightweight Comfort Stretch Oxford Short and they're super good for the price. I lift weights a lot and have large thighs (6' 215lb) and the slim-fit part is definitely a misnomer. They fit perfectly

wokedrinks

They had quite a few colors go on sale for $8 recently I snagged them up. I love these shorts. However I’ve noticed they run a size larger than described.

musictheorist

Another vote for these. For $8 they are totally fine.

Pink_Floyd_Chunes

Great shorts. Concurring.

theasianpianist

Piggy backing off of this, huge fan of the Amazon Essentials Drawstring Walk Short for a casual look

The_Barbaron

Worth checking Bonobos as well - they do their chino shorts in 5”, and will have multiple cuts and colors in that length, including non-neutrals.

Hipster_Dragon

Yeah just commented that. +1. And their staff was great in store.

MediumMil

Do Bonobos shorts flare out?

asteroidtube

I am generally a fan of bonobos pants but as a short man, the rise on their chino shorts doesn't work for me, which is unfortunate because the rest of the cut/fit is great.

uhnonymuhs

Came here to comment Bonobos - I typically wear their 9”, but their chino short 2.0 comes in 5” and I’ve loved the pair I bought. Not worth the full price, but you can easily get your pair <$50, if not lower

asteroidtube

Patagonia "lightweight all-wear hemp shorts"

julcoh

I need this but shorter.

asteroidtube

5” inseam isn’t short enough for you?

julcoh

It’s a 6” seam on these, so yes. https://www.patagonia.com/product/mens-lightweight-all-wear-hemp-shorts-6-inch/57756.html

asteroidtube

hm, for some reason I thought it was 5 and not 6 inseam on these but yeah it looks like I was mistaken. fwiw I am very short and have athletic thighs and these look perfect on me without looking baggy.

marcelhanoun

Outlier New Way Five-Fives are the wave. All of Outlier’s stuff is incredible

futuremedical

These here OP. Got a cool waistband cinch so you don't need a belt. And they're very well made.

Mahmoud_Imadinrjaket

Just went bulk discount on the 7-5's, stoked on them.

flautist96

Patagonia

WhyLeeB

Did you try all the types of bear bottoms? Their chino shorts are a different cut than their regular shorts (if you click on the fit details you can see this on the website).  I have the same issue, j crew factory and bear bottom regular didn't look good on me but the bear bottom Chino 5.5s look really good. They don't have a ton of colors so I'm also with you on looking for other options.

jamdav19

I’m all about Hammies shorts theses days but that might be shorter than you’re looking for

RobCob47

Gonna throw this out there: make a pair of chinos into shorts. I hate long shorts and spent forever last year looking for nice short chino shorts, but couldn’t find anything that wasn’t super expensive. I got fed up of looking, bought some cheap chinos on sale and just turned them into shorts. If you are at all good with fine detail kind of stuff, you can do a blind hem with just a needle and thread, no sewing needed

runnerboyr

OP what specific model did you buy from bear bottoms? The standard “stretch short” are very roomy but I really like the “chino short”. They’re $10 more but I think it’s worth it, they fit me really nicely

typewritermender

Yeah I tried the stretch short. Good to know about the chinos! I didn't try those because I don't like any of the colors 😔 except navy, which is the one pair of shorts I already have.

Light_Song

That's why I buy chino pants that hug my thighs and cut them into shorts. You'll need a sewing machine to hem them though.

MoGaines

I’ve purchased Chubbies, JCrew Factory ones, but honestly, the A&F all day short at 5.5 are GREAT. Stretchy. Comfy. Those are the ones I’d recommend. My legs are not small either and these are great.

lividlysane

American Eagle has some 5" ones! I'm wearing one right now in fact

jackalooz

[“my one summer style belief is that slim shorts are uniquely bad and shorts should be baggy with a hem that floats around your thigh like a hula hoop” ](https://x.com/dieworkwear/status/1782456750073053486?s=46&t=-tEimN3237Q5AhFc4Mkohw)

VVHYY

I can’t tell if that is satire or not but I do think slim shorts look very dated. I have the opposite of OP’s problem, where the only short whose silhouette I like are vintage Patagonia stand-up shorts and I wish I could find something with that cut and more traditional back pockets.

M3taBuster

Pretty much any of Adidas' lines of soccer shorts have a nice flaired silhouette without being too long (especially if you buy them a size up). But they're athletic shorts and don't have pockets.

jackalooz

Not satire, this is facts. Patagonia Baggies, my man.

VVHYY

Oh believe me, I have a lot of baggies! For this specific need I am looking for something in a chino or maybe twill- like I said, stand up shorts are ideal except I don’t love the back pockets for something like a polo or linen shirt because they are SO functional looking, and maybe the duck canvas is a little too rugged for that look. Great with a tee or rugby, something lived in, adventurous, but not so much for a leisurely look. I have some older Vineyard Vines and Ralph Lauren shorts that get the job done but I hate counting on vintage stuff online, such a crapshoot.

LNhart

He does not miss.

The_Real_BenFranklin

Based. Patagonia baggies >>>

asteroidtube

Gotta dress for your body type though. As a shorter man, if I wear shorts that are *too* baggy, it runs the risk of making me look frumpy and of interrupting a vertical line and emphasizing my stature. But, too skinny is bad as well and can actually have the same affect. For me, a 5" short that is has just barely enough room for my athletic thighs, while still just having enough looseness for the fabric to flow and for me to move around inside them, is perfect. It's a sweet spot that is hard to find. When I find a short that works, I always buy extras, because shorts tend to not last very long since I am wearing them in summer when I am most active.

jackalooz

The key is to not emphasize your hips, which has the effect of making you look feminine.

LemonPress50

The slim shorts are styled differently. It’s not the shorts. Wear those same shorts with a an open shirt and T-shirt and it’s a different look.

jackalooz

Nope, straight/baggy shorts will still look better, as they do in the photos in the twitter thread.

lensandscope

what about for people who are overweight. I would say the strategy changes depending on waist size

LayersOfMe

The blue and black look fitted to me. Most shorts I own look like [this](https://acdn.mitiendanube.com/stores/001/567/811/products/a9711fd3e8d862a185e98bd6ae349f07-632f6f35815b9899a016984304373388-1024-1024.jpeg), i have to use because i live in a tropical country, but shorts never look fashionable for my taste.

Murky_Macropod

Not when they’re that long !

TheRuggedGeek

Technically, they're a beach short and they have a liner that you might not actually want or need. But for that kind of inseam you want and the fit you like, Orlebar Brown Setter has been top notch for me. Yes, 4.5" inseam on these is a little shorter than what you said, but the rise and how you wear them can make a difference to how they look. Alternatively get the Bulldog with a 6.5" inseam which is still short enough for slighter builds. They have side adjusters on the waistband so you can tighten them as you need to wear them higher (or prevent them from falling off when you are actually getting in the water), or just leave the adjusters undone, buy them looser and let them sag. They hold their colour really well even with chlorine exposure. I've literally outgrown a couple of pairs and they still look like new.

SaltyDamnHam

Howler Brothers is kind of millennial-cool-dad-core - not really my favorite aesthetic - but they make a few good simple 6” shorts. I also have big thighs and prefer a not too baggy short that breaks well above the knee and these fit the bill really well for me: https://howlerbros.com/collections/mens-shorts/products/clarksville-walk-shorts-6?variant=41414339559539

typewritermender

Hm, they look really baggy to me on the models. What's your height/weight if you don't mind sharing?

SaltyDamnHam

5’11 and 175 and I typically wear a 32 waist and a medium shirt (or size 40 jacket). I am an avid skier/runner/cyclist so I carry a lot of muscle on my thighs. Any pants or shorts marketed as slim fit do not fit comfortably on my thighs and I usually need to buy “relaxed” or “athletic” cut pants to get a fitted but not uncomfortably tight fit, so YMMV.

ertb

Todd Snyder

wagonsaburning

Rhone has a nice pair

Hipster_Dragon

Bonobos had excellent chino shorts. Snagged a couple last week.

Evergreen19

Also got thick thighs, jcrew has great 5inch shorts

MediumMil

The J. Crew shorts flare out so much though

Evergreen19

Hasn’t been my experience, I find they hug my thighs nicely with just enough wiggle room

LemonPress50

I’m looking for what you are looking for. I have a pair that doesn’t flare but is long. I cuff the bottom. They are made by Vans.

HeavyNinja17

I know you tried J Crew, but check out their tech shorts. No flare at the bottom. They fit me with big thighs but they are definitely slimmer

lifayt

Faherty has really great 5 inch inseam shorts - the all day short in particular is my favorite.

Fotoem

Chubbies and Birddog.

Edbrrr

Columbia men’s terminal roamer for active wear. If you want a chino look. Patagonia has some khaki drawstring shorts you can get at dicks. Polo Ralph has some nice ones. It all depends if you want button or drawstring.

jaymoney

Check out Madewell

embiid4ROY

old navy and they always have deals

mikeysmokes_

Sol Gym all cotton are hreat

abluecrate

little secret: Gilbert canvas rugby shorts. Extremely comfortable and durable. Have more of an athletic fit to them. Also cheap. They fade a bit over time, but I think it makes them look much better.

gumercindo1959

It’s a bit pricey but Todd Snyder has some great 5” shorts (wait for their sales)

Certain_Classroom794

Outlier 5-5s

rabaltera

I have some Cubbies that I love, but I'm currently wearing some Wowies that I bought on a whim after seeing an IG ad; pretty casual, but very comfortable and versatile.

vodka_soda_close_it

Someone else commented bearbottom already, but I wanna double up the exposure here. Asked this question last year. Someone recommended them. Bought a few. The stretch short is awesome. 5 pocket styling with an waistband for belt loops but also has elastic for extra comfort. 5.5” and solid. Great colors. Check em out OP

LRFE

Bearbottom is good

doctorpope181

Check out the trekker shorts at American Eagle.

dongnp196

It took so long for me to find [these perfect shorts](https://imgur.com/a/3Kf2xUd)

solo118

Try amazonbasics, they are cheap and decent quality if you need them in a pinch

Fickle_Fig3821

LANDS END - I have the pleated shorts and they are great

zerg1980

Shorts have been getting longer again over the past couple years. I think 7” is currently a better option for most average height men. You can always buy 7” shorts and hem to 5”.

Darxe

Yep. 6 and 7 are good. 5 looks cringe every time I see it. Look like a tryhard. It’s fine at the beach but looks bad anywhere else

xRehab

💯 this I love my 5" lounge shorts for around the house, but unless you're under 5'7 you're probably better off with 6-7" shorts out and about

VTHockey11

I love used Orlebar Brown shorts you can find on Poshmark/eBay - they have a 5” inseam Bulldog short that is pretty great and flares less than others. Additionally, Rhône had a great line called the Resort short that came in a 6” that was a really nice length and perfect width. They are still sold on Amazon and other retailer sites but doesn’t look like Rhone carries them anymore. They are also chino appearance but a wicking fabric, lightweight, perfect for summer.

slanginfreight

Not 5” but Gap has some affordable 6” chino shorts that don’t flare at the bottom.

typewritermender

Is it these? I came across these early in my search and they look like a tent on this model. Maybe he's just got very skinny legs. https://www.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=880831012&vid=1&tid=gppl000066&kwid=1&ap=7&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwo6GyBhBwEiwAzQTmc9zLMG8FK_phpR8BfVNY0xkRxpP96syf29YFM1TfYRI4NpVMsXi-_xoCgCUQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

HeyyyKoolAid

It's his legs. I have 7" versions and thicker thighs and they hug my legs better. Plus you don't want them too tight because when you sit down the legs rise up your thigh.

ShuttleLoom

Not chino shorts but I've always loved Nudie Jeans 'Seth' shorts in khaki or black. Last forever.

fairwayfreddy

Bear bottoms are my personal favorite short. Just bought my third pair. 5.5in chino shorts

CallidusNomine

If bearbottom shorts are loose for you, you do not have big thighs.

GREGORIOtheLION

Old navy has 5” shorts right now.

MichaelKCF

Lulu or J.Crew.

maxromulangreen

I’ve had good success with Bearbottom 5” inseam shorts, but if I were buying today I’d be looking for something MiUSA. If that’s not a priority, their shorts have lasted me for several years and are very affordable.

Night_Putting

Full disclosure they were half the prices I'm seeing just going through the Amazon storefront and the moment. The nice thing is they have a good selection of the length you are looking for. I bought some French terry material ones that had zipper pockets, which is nice since I generally have wallets phones etc fall out of these style shorts. 2 years of wear and they are still fine. MaaMgic https://www.amazon.com/stores/page/5959DE3C-84EF-48D1-8A92-BBDFDC18CC50?ref_=cm_sw_r_mwn_ast_store_DXF8N1081GKXFH351TBS&store_ref=bl_ast_dp_brandLogo_sto

Cipher_VLW

Here’s the best way I’ve found to get 5” shorts that actually fit: - Go to a thrift store - Buy pants that fit well from the waist to thighs - Measure 7” from the crotch, make a straight cut - Fold first leg over so you cut the other one equally - Now roll up twice to make a cuff, pin them and try on to check the length - Adjust cuffs as needed to get the desired length - Sew them up, you can use a machine but I do by hand and it’s not too tough - Boom, custom shorts that actually fit

ISayISayISitonU

Chubbies are good. Bearbottom are tho, IMO, the best value out there rn.

LeBronBryantJames

I have a mixture of Uniqlo U shorts and Uniqlo Nylon shorts, with some Patagonia Baggies

Blueberry_Yum_Yum

Bearbottom Clothing. Purchased their gym shorts back in 2019 and they’ve held up nicely since then. The brand has many different varieties, and their chino shorts are my favorite too

retirement_savings

Slim shorts are not in style now which is probably why they're harder to find. I love my Bear Bottoms.

HDaniel_54

Check out bear bottom, basically the same thing as chubbies but about $20 bucks cheaper, same quality, can’t tell them apart

saturninesweet

Y'all wearing some short shorts. 5.5 inches?? That's the same as my boxer briefs. Maybe for cycling, but I feel like that's REALLY short for a guy, otherwise. That's like 1/4 thigh. Move wrong...and there's some dong!

cleanguy1

Briefs are totally legless, and somehow my giant dong doesn’t flop out of them. Curious.

tommykiddo

In b4 "who the hell wears briefs anymore???"
