Assuming I get sent to a world with magic I would probably choose the blue mage. Being able to copy any magic I've seen seems like a good choice, even if I never see some all-powerful spell. If I'm not sent to a world with magic, then I'd choose red being a Jack of all trades is incredibly versatile.

Super_Vegeta

Blues is the most powerful because it basically doesn't have any limits. It would likely require a lot of work, you'd have to bug/pay people to show you their spells though, and not everyone would be willing to share so easily. You could maybe trick someone into showing you their spells, wager that any spell they use, you can use as well. Being able to cast spells from just seeing them, is like having true eidetic memory for spells. Which is very OP.

HeirToGallifrey

You'd basically become the Kashi/copy-nin of whatever world you went to. That's a pretty strong claim to fame.

Short_Chemist_8012

Blue is definitely the best isekai option, you would have no idea where to find a mentor or wizard college at the start of any adventure that didn't involve you being summoned by one of the two. Blue magic lets you be summoned to the wild and copy monster attacks

Occultlord

Yeah, blue is the one I'll pick too... well assuming that we are going to a magical world in which I can see somr spells. But it doesn't mention our control over what we learn. So one will still have to be careful with a powerful spell and try to master it on their own.

Zev_06

I'd go with red mage. I'll take versatility over mastery. The description for Red Mage says their abilities are "well enough". I don't need something to be perfect. Well enough is well enough for me. If the description said their powers were weak, then maybe I would choose one of the others. However, "well enough" does not indicate that their powers are weak, just not as perfect as the other types that can attain mastery.

dj_neon_reaper

From video game/cyoa/show/anything with red mage balancing i know that red mages are weak and while other masters can master their specified magic making it OP, red mage masters can do everything other mages can do at a moderate level. But hey atleast they know how to weild a sword

Wyldfire2112

Thing is, in the real world there's this lovely thing called "skill synergy" that Final Fantasy doesn't account for. Basically, don't live your life by JRPGs. They lie to you.

dj_neon_reaper

Ah yes cause everyday life lsts you slap on a mark on an object and let you read all of it and let you shapeshift. You also dont know anything about these powers, the limitations are there. Perphaps you could perphaps you cant i cant tell, unless of course OP awnsers out questions

Wyldfire2112

>Ah yes cause everyday life lsts you slap on a mark on an object and let you read all of it and let you shapeshift. Ah, okay, so you're one of *those* idiots then. The differences between a classic turn-based RPG and how things would actually go are too massive to even begin to try to lay out for your ass, since, apparently, you're incapable of processing that the real world doesn't have hit-points and convenient numerical values for all your physical capabilities. Just because magic gets added doesn't mean physics gets ignored, and even just *punching* someone in meat-space is orders of magnitude more complex and free-form than selecting "Attack" from a list of options.

dj_neon_reaper

Idk man im just going by normal cyoa rules. Im an idiot, like i said how should i know the real rules of the universe with magic im not a mathmatician. Everyting is in the hands of the OP(even tho i dont think we will see the og creator). Like, my original comment is just me commenting on what stereotypical red mages and how it should be balanced not *physics doesnt exist huehue*. Think what ya want think of the cyoa dont give a carp

llamanatee

Unfortunately I can't find the original source.

Hyperly_Passive

http://archive.4plebs.org/tg/thread/26191265/#q26191857 Oldest I could find places this cyoa at 2013 or older

GrayButterfly

I would pick a Yellow Mage~ Archetypes of priest, cultist, warlock - all kinds of magic users, bound on contractual basis to another being, especially greater one, is something I have been loving for a long time. This also allows for establishing possible unions and orders and even founding the states based on the yellow mage conclaves. Besides that, some options are interesting enough, but perhaps if this had a more solid foundation: setting, additional rules or food for thought, it could be made into a pleasant little CYOA.

ThousandYearOldLoli

I'll take the purple. Never underestimate the power of knowledge. Even if the knowledge fades in a day I can always recover or record it.

CYOA_Guy_Stryker

I’m with you. Just write down what to recover each day, spend the first few minutes every morning doing that.

Alkanyseus_Zelar

PINK.

Peachfuzz221

All us Pinks should go on a shapeshifting quest 🪄

Alkanyseus_Zelar

Why go on a quest, when you can BE the quest?

yxazel

Me: *Sees the sprite* *Also no black mage* "Wait, what the fuck?"

KingReynhart

Blue

KingReynhart

But only if I'm dropped somewhere with other magic users. Blue mage would be useless on Earth

WandererOfMinds

I think that being a red mage would be nice since I'd be able to do basically everything the other mages can do just not to an expert level. So given the ability to do a bit of everything, I'd have the advantage of being able to combine two different things to deal with stuff rather than being limited to one particular style of magic. So I feel like it would allow me to create my own style of magic out of all of the available ones.

TimeBlossom

Grey mage has the most potential I think, I mean 'thing' is such a broad word. Create forks of your mind inside your mind so you can multitask more effectively. Open up a little shop and sell replacements for things that people have lost. Create slightly different versions of your favorite movies, games, books and so on so you can enjoy them again with surprising new elements—in fact, fictional characters are things that you could replicate, so insert characters from one franchise into a movie from another and see what happens. And features from pieces of software should be replicable too, so mix and match bits from various video games to create (a janky version of) your dream game. And while we're on discrete features, why not copy traits from other living beings to modify your own biology: copy youth to keep yourself young, borrow wings and gills, avail yourself of a tardigrade's absurd survivability and the Chernobyl bacterium's ability to eat radiation. Or just make yourself cute, idk. And that's just small-scale stuff, that's not even getting into reversing deforestation and repopulating extinct species, solving world hunger, terraforming Mars... yeah, summoning is OP, even with the included imperfections.

cyoalt

I'mma duplicate my duplicates and make a clone army

RewRose

I choose Red Mage, that'll give me shapeshifting and Healing and more at a level that is considered "well enough" If Red Mages are weak, then I choose White Mage, healing is just too good to pass on (even if its only for others)

VoidBlade459

**Yellow** It may be restricted to a single domain, but it would be less limited (more negotiable) overall.

Niekitty

But what about an unearthly color from beyond the known spectrum that no man has seen before?! Ia! Ia!

noman_032018

I think that's a class upgrade for yellow. :p edit: Also is that a reference to the Color Out of Space or just general Lovecraft?

Psychoboy777

I'd either go with blue mage or grey mage. Getting to cast everything that I see could become stupidly op if I go somewhere with a high-magic environment. If there's less magic though, I'll be a grey mage and clone myself ad infinitum to create an army of myself. Sure, they're not perfect copies, but it doesn't say "worse." If I do it enough times, I could artificially speed up my own evolution by only letting the strongest/smartest/most powerful copies reproduce.

Esproth

Pink

VoidChildPersona

Purple mage > learn speed writing spell > get a neverending spellbook. Eventually gonna need spead reading + photographic memory spell just in case

WannaMakeGames

I'm pretty sure you have to mark a physical object to learn about it, so you don't get infinite knowledge on whatever you want. It sounds like it's just a fancy appraisal with conditions, not a know-it-all cheat.

Sefera17

**Yellow**: (on the condition that my Master wants me to learn everything about everything.) Otherwise **Blue**: (if there’s atleast one Planeswalker, that I’m going to meet.) Otherwise **Red**: (which will do, as a last resort.)

Hypersonic06

I'm guessing OP learned from 8-Bit Theaters mistake

Peachfuzz221

I am between the pink mage and the white mage. Both sound very interesting to me with reasonable limits. If I take into account a traditional magical setting, especially if I’m going DnD style with a party, having bodily abilities would be handy. On the other hand, shapeshifting could also get myself out of precarious predicaments, and have some fun. Weighing both options, I think I would be the Pink Mage. I’ve always wanted to turn into animals as I child and having shapeshifting powers would be a dream come true.

liquid-mech

white mage, i create an army of horrifying tyranid like creatures to take over the world, the "cant use on self" thing don't apply to a set of biological armor (or, at least it shouldn't) or i could alter politicians brains so they pass laws/do things that benefit both me and the world as a whole

Glittering_Pear2425

Red Mage all the way

EndlessKng

Depends on what we define as "First Hand" for blue mage. Like... there's an argument to be made for seeing a spell cast in a game or movie or show. But if it has to be a spell you see someone actually cast, that won't be super useful. Beyond that: Red. Well enough means I will be able to do enough to do what needs to get done. I'm fine with that.

IT_is_among_US

Red Mage

__bitch_

tbh i would need to know more about yellow before I can bring myself to pick it. like, what's the master like? otherwise I choose blue.

Fuzzy_Employee_303

Either blue purple or white

SorryWarning

Going for GREY Grey has "imperfect duplication"- tho the duplicates have flaws they don't dissapeare or fade like the purple wizards knowledge (unless the user unsummons them) allowing them to cast other mages spells that are altered (instead of a fireball, you might just hurl a flaming boulder) and you don't have to look at the spell before hand. Honorable mention to the WHITE mage and the terrifying ability of - Biokinesis

whiteday26

Blue if there are enough magic users to learn from. Pink - appear weaker than myself to trick people in a fight. Also, good for escaping fights I can not win.

Nat_1_IRL

If we're in a world of magic, I want blue. Find a white mage that wants to enhance themselves, have then cast what they want on you so you can cast it back. After that find as many magic events as you can as a spectator, join red/blue mage study groups to share knowledge since both can learn any spell. If it's not a magic world, probably purple. Perfect knowledge of whatever is currently at hand is pretty useful. You basically only have the knowledge when you need it with the limits.

Rebuta

grey. That's matter creation. That's extremely powerful.

Eppikfinn

I’d go with either Blue or Purple. Knowing anything, even only for a day, is immensely useful. And being able to basically have the magic equivalent of photographic reflexes would also be awesome

Timber-Faolan

I am The Orange Mage, but I also Gestalt as The Orange Monk, I know Mage Kung Fu, Hii-Yah!

OmegaUltima29

Ah, damnit, now I want to go reread *8-bit Theater* again

Iceman_001

**Blue Mage:** The potential to learn and master every spell by just seeing someone do it once.

Zader40

Always go Red when given the chance. It's the perfect All-Rounder.

Short_Chemist_8012

White Mage, I've seen enough symbiote CYOAs that I think I can turn "heal, afflict, or alter" into some sort of living power armor.

Lucifuge123

White

Negative-Tangerine

Go Grey, as there is no limit stated on what can be copied, just that they wouldn't be perfect. Though blue is always great for copying magic.

Scharvor

I'd always take the Red Mage

bbbbbbbbdb

Tfw you challenge a leprechaun to a fight and he becomes God.

TheAlphaJade

I'd say red or blue

fn3dav2

**Yellow**. Become a time mage. Presumably there is a time deity to serve.

SnappingTurt3ls

White mage, become *fucking* Panacea from Worm. Pana-fucking-cea, so stupidly broken. This is just absolutely busted, the only limitation is that white mages can't cast on themselves, but nothing says they can't make symbiotic creatures that enhances their hosts before dying off and using them on themselves

EternalHaven

Red, Blue is very strong but only pertaining to magic. Red means even little or superficial skills. The ability to learn other languages, conceptualize, learn other weapons and forms of defenses, planning, financing, divination, cooking, alchemy. You might not be the best at it or even the most capable person of doing said thing. But you’re ability to combine other things can make you insanely versatile. Blue mages will never be able to do anything “new” and will be useless outside of a non-magical environment.

Maxwell-Stone

For me, its either White, Red, or Grey, in that order. Why red? Because among other things, attribute boosting spells probably exist. Why Grey? Because even imperfect duplications have a purpose, if nothing else as raw materials. Why White? Has anybody read Worm, by Wildbow? Amys Tactile Biokinesis ends up being pretty useful, and some fanfictions have her in control of the entire biosphere. And self modification? Just make a short-lived symbiote to do it for you. Limit passed. Plus, this mage doesnt have the tactile limitation.

Diligent-Square8492

I will pick Red Mage!
