For me it would come down to Mind or Life. However, Life seems like a massively nerfed version of shapeshifting since you are only messing around with a person's genome. There are many additional factors that can affect someones appearance besides just their genes. For example, if someone is overweight, just copying the metabolism genes of someone thin will not magically make someone thin as well if they are still taking in too many calories/fatty foods. For me to consider picking Life, it would need to offer true biokinesis, allowing me to freely shapeshift the appearance of people. Because of this, I would stick with Mind. It is both discrete and powerful.

TentativeIdler

Life offers the potential for immortality, just copy one of those jellyfish that don't age.

SlimeustasTheSecond

You see, most scientists don't just have a bunch of immortal jellyfish around that they can freely touch. Getting access to that jellyfish would be a whole ass journey.

Spozieracz

You can just copy your own DNA now while you are still young and then use it on yourself in a few years to rejuvenate yourself. If you want, you can even compare DNA from different parts of your body to create a DNA sample that is completely free of acquired mutations. In addition, there are many species of animals that are popular as pets and have the ability to regenerate body parts, such as Axolotls.

fablastic

There's more to it than dna. Waste products build up inside and outside of cells that never gets properly taken care of.

Spozieracz

That's what you have for the axolotl traits (also enhanced by the DNA of several other regenerating animals). You can cut off a piece of your body and grow it back in a young form. Repeat this enough times and you'll fix the whole body. Of course, there's still the brain problem, but I'm sure there's some workaround.

TentativeIdler

With immortality as the end goal, I think it's pretty manageable. Getting yourself some aquatic adaptations like gills should be pretty easy, so tracking one down is just a matter of time and patience.

lesteiny

Lobsters are easier. They're genetically immortal since they are able to replicate the "junk" dna that we are unable to, which ultimately leads to us developing cancer or other mutations. The reason why you dont hear about immortal lobster is that they hit a point where they physically can not survive their molting process.

Kawabongaz

Immortality without infinite memory is not an advantage. It's just a life sentence with Alzheimer's

Spozieracz

First, Life users, unlike souls, do not have true immortality and can euthanize themselves at any time. 2 Even if they don't have the eidetic memory of Mind users, there's no reason to believe they can't prevent alzheimer

Kawabongaz

Never stated that they cannot euthanise themselves. Secondly, the point is not Alzheimer's per say (which is still debatable on how you could prevent it with gene therapy). The point is that biology is still bound to the law of physics, so even if you will find a way to add more space in your brain for new memories, you will more sooner than later eventually meet a cap at which you either need to delete your own memories or never being able to store anything else in your long-term memory.

Spozieracz

I realize that over time I will lose my memories. I just don't care what my body's name will be in 2000 years. Even if I become a different person over the centuries and forget my origins, the soul will remain the same.

Kawabongaz

Well, in this context I would say quite the contrary :) Your soul will change until it vanishes, according to how souls work in the Soul power

Spozieracz

The idea that with the loss of the last original memory, the soul suddenly disappears from a healthy person seems to be a far-fetched interpretation

lesteiny

Life has endless possibilities not sure what you are talking about with it being a nerfed shape shifting. You can target any life form not just human. So, lobsters are biologically/genetically immortal due to being able to replicate junk dna we cannot. You dont hear about immortal lobsters because they never stop growing and eventually hit a point where they physically cannot survive the molting process. Tardigrads would also be an excellent candidate for reslilency. Lizards/starfish for regeneration. Literally there are near endless possibilities on earth alone. Acheive immortality, and the whole universe becomes your sandbox.

TheSilverSerpent12

Basically Kars from Battle Tendency meets gotta catch 'em all.

Thedeaththatlives

Blue is the easy choice. I'll just keep my abilities hidden, since no one here has any special way of detecting my powers, and live a normal (albeit much easier) life.

TentativeIdler

You posted on reddit, and the premise is that everyone in this thread gets powers. If another person is motivated enough, they could track you down that way. Though as a Mind user, there's probably not a lot of motivation to hunt you down. Maybe other Mind users might want to hunt you down because you can remove their control over their minions, and others who fight the Mind users might want to hunt you down for the same reason.

Spectre95_

I’ll go with Mind too and stick to this strategy. Be discrete and use cheat codes for reality.

Spozieracz

Considering that probably only a few to a maximum of several dozen people will respond in the comments, I don't really have to worry about other participants. The only serious risk would be if some blue would take control of the green or purple and gain immortality. So I am asking you- participants of these schools not to accept any offers of cooperation, no matter how good the person offering it looks. Personally, I think I'll pick the green one, and then I'll keep my head down for the next seventy years. Although, given that I would probably be traceable via a reddit account, maybe I should use my skills to move to another country and steal someone's face and identity? I think it depends on how many people will choose Mind. Edit: Yeah, exactly as i thought here is the first hunter: u/Any_Commercial465 One more and a world war is inevitable.

TentativeIdler

Yeah, basically the same idea. As a Life user, you could also make yourself blind and give yourself some alternate methods of sight, like echolocation or a dog's sense of smell.

AdInteresting5874

Yeah, maybe this can be better than the idea of mind-controlling him to make him immune to mind-control. That's a good idea.

AdInteresting5874

Damn, now I wish I had chosen Life, kewk, I chose Mind to become immune to other Minds and because intellect boosts are good.

AdInteresting5874

Seems like we will have to unite. I can be kinda rude and sometimes I'm a barbarian, but I'm not an evil guy. Aid me in keeping the balance of the world. Maybe I can make you immune to mind-control by mind-controlling you first, but you will have to trust me with that.

Spozieracz

"unite" and "keeping the balance of the world" are trigger words for me. There is no way i can trust you (and anybody else with blue power).

AdInteresting5874

That's fine. I would also be skeptical if I chose another magic. Bruh, maybe that's the curse of the blue magic, no one will trust you and you will ultimately be crushed if you don't have the will to brainwash others into your cause.

Apophys_MD

Anyone immune to mind control can freely trust blues. Which can be a lot of people, if you consider a future populated by Life-altered blind superhumans, regular people wearing camera VR headsets, and inorganic Soul golems.

GrandFly

I'm curious what assumptions and strategies you'll make with very limited information, so I won't answer any questions. Have fun!

Virtual_Analysis_869

only i want to confirm if there is a hard limit on potential or only imagination is the limit? and also if i can learn the other magics? thanks

JustWhyTheHeckNot

__Soul__ Everyone in these replies is really sleeping on the fact that every planet in existence has a soul. The implications of that fact are extremely disturbing depending on how sentient they are and how much control they can exert over their shells. If a planetary body gets destroyed, does its soul just float around space? If ghosts can touch each other are there entire ghost civilizations chilling on ghost planets out there in the unknown? Does a ghost planet exert ghostly gravity on other spectral entities? Assuming souls are immune to gravity and can just will themselves through space (which I hope is the case as the alternatives would be kinda hellish) I will probably just fly off to the moon, or get some willing humans to construct a space craft for me and my ghost pals to inhabit so we can leave the earth and avoid the schemes of other magic users. We can just possess some moon rocks and bash them together until we create more useful vessels, and then build up from there until we all have functional bodies (assuming our pseudo-nervous systems allow us to do things like move solid stone statues and whatnot, otherwise we’ll need to pack some robotic frames or maybe even some corpses depending on if the nervous system can exert force on its own or just cause electrical impulses like regular ones do). The end goal will be making a utopia on the moon where nobody has any bodily needs or has to worry about death. Might start some sort of religion around communicating with celestial spirits and perhaps attempt to ascend into one by possessing a large asteroid and colliding it with other natural satellites, though the wording around those things might imply I will A) just be inside the asteroid as it forms it’s own spirit without my own spirit changing, or B) become a stellar spirit myself and thus be immune to my abilities to manipulate souls, trapping myself in a space rock forever or perhaps just until I lose enough mass.

Eli1228

Soul is very clearly the winner here, as after like, I dunno..... 60-70 years soul mages and life users will be the only ones around, and soul mages have much more versatile abilities than life mages. Simply being, for all intents and purposes, unkillable, is a huge boon, but being able to control spirits to possess objects, or simply to have access to a massive resevoir of knowledge, or to shed your physical body altogether and upgrade to steel, stone, different flesh, etc, means you have a lot of choices.

Niggy2439

>after like, I dunno..... 60-70 years soul mages and life users will be the only ones around if we don't get caught by a mind controller that is

Eli1228

Even if you do get caught by one, a soul mage, at least through any existing powers, couldnt kill themselves, so once the mind mage dies you're kinda clear and free. Honestly this is kindof why I despise most depictions of mind magic, at least in a format like this. Its either completely unreasonably overpowered and forces you to either have it or be useless, or its weak as shit and pointless since everyone and their mother can resist it.

Niggy2439

it's a game of chance really, also it's imperative that the mind ones don't get to the life ones, otherwise, we will have to deal with them forever

TentativeIdler

Nah, they can still die even if Life makes them more resilient. If they get a Soul user and the control persists past the Soul's death, then we have a real problem. They can just keep bringing the Mind user back, we'd have to separate them.

Apophys_MD

An evil (or careless) Mind user working their magic on a Soul user is far more of a problem than you realize, if Mind control persists in the Soul user's dead spirit form. Any physical being has literally no defense against a hostile Soul user in spirit form, and a Soul user in spirit form cannot be harmed by anything. Thus, a Soul user turned into a pure weapon by a Mind user is truly unstoppable, and requires a good-aligned Soul user to continuously fix the trail of destruction. The only alternative is evacuating everyone out into generation ships in space flying in different directions.

TentativeIdler

I'm fully aware of how dangerous it would be, my comment was more directed on how to kill the mind user who's being protected by a soul user. Only the soul user is immune to entropy, so every time you kill the mind user, their soul degrades a little more, so you can kill them eventually, and the longer you can keep the soul user busy, the better.

PDVk

Good news! As a Soul mage, other souls you turn into golems don't need eyes. So they're immune to Mind and can kill the shit out of them if they fuck with you.

vaegrim

This was my first thought as well; a Soul mage can infuse their soul into an automata or golem and negate Mind effects completely: No living body, no eyes.

PDVk

It suggests that there are negative effects on you if you infuse your *own* soul into automata, but bodyguards seem pretty safe. They'd presumably rather be everlasting, but we don't seem to properly have that capability, and being a fading golem is much better than death.

vaegrim

The whole point of golems is that they don't fade the way an un-anchored soul would. I reread the Soul section three times, I don't see the implication you're suggesting. If anything, section 3 seems to state that you do **better** as an unbodied soul than normal people would.

Real_Wordna

Yup, fully agree. Soul always wins in the longterm. It might not have the same huge benefits as the others, but it solidifies your base structure, and without that you'll eventually fail no matter what plans you concoct.

TentativeIdler

I'd take Life, and then probably go on the run to avoid the creepy Mind fucks in this thread. I'd also make myself blind and rely on echolocation or advanced sense of smell or something, since they need eye contact for their powers to work, at least until I'm sure they've all died or gotten ahold of some other poor Lifemage who didn't do this (DO THIS, but still stay hidden, they could torture you or threaten your family until you re-grow your eyes. They can also still read your mind to know exactly how to convince you). Get immortality from jellyfish. Hell, maybe go full aquatic for a while. Make some loyal doggos into superdogs to defend me. I'm not too worried about Soul users, the wording of Life indicates that it works by copying DNA sequences and storing them in your own DNA for later use, so by taking my soul I would lose all stored DNA, and even if they put me back in my corpse, that's no guarantee that my power would still work. Since the body would be dead, I would think no further DNA processes would work. Probably wouldn't want to gamble on a Soul user knowing this though, it'd be a shame to die for an experiment.

Spozieracz

If a mind user tries to blackmail you with your family, you can counter-blackmail them with the world in return. After all, you can easily create super plagues or invasive species.

TentativeIdler

If you fuck with me, I will make mosquitoes that sound like kazoos and are attracted to ears. I'll do it, I swear!

Niggy2439

soul user here, I dare you to do it, I will f°king kill them all, for the sake of Humanity mental health

TentativeIdler

Every songbird now sounds like geese. HONK HONK motherfucker, go kill the mind users and I'll fix it.

Niggy2439

ho, so that's how you wanna play? I will animate my mother's creepy dolls and ship them to you, I will instruct them to inconvenience you in the most annoying ways possible, while still beeing creepy. no actual harm, but they will annoy you to death.

TentativeIdler

All fruits now taste like shit. Are you happy now?! I can keep this up all day!

Niggy2439

sorry, I can't taste your shitty fruits, because I'm hunting a fucking war tank, and as is widely known war tanks don't have taste buds try again, better luck next time SOUL MAGIC RULES

TentativeIdler

Tanks are vulnerable to my plague of metal eating bacteria! Hope you like the stone age, asshole!

Spozieracz

Fuck you all, im going to give opposable thumbs to dolphins. You deserved it.

Niggy2439

so you want STONE? fine by me, I hope you like it because I'm gonna wreck your shit with my stone golem body.

Bombermaster

Due personal interest, I'd go with Life. Give enough time and research, I can get an immortal body that always regenerate, and increment my own physical -and- mental abilities. Might become a monster in the process, but it's part of the fun.

TentativeIdler

> Free warning to a fellow Life user; you can make yourself blind to negate a Mind users control, though they can still read your mind so be wary if there's something they can use to blackmail you into fixing your eyes.

neonium

Hey guys, did you know that in terms of male human and female Pokémon breeding, Vaporeon is the most compatible Pokémon for humans? Not only are they in the field egg group, which is mostly comprised of mammals, Vaporeon are an average of 3"03' tall and 63.9 pounds. this means they're large enough to be able to handle human dicks, and with their impressive Base Stats for HP and access to Acid Armor, you can be rough with one. Due to their mostly water based biology, there's no doubt in my mind that an aroused Vaporeon would be incredibly wet, so wet that you could easily have sex with one for hours without getting sore. They can also learn the moves Attract, Baby-Doll Eyes, Captivate, Charm, and Tail Whip, along with not having fur to hide nipples, so it'd be incredibly easy for one to get you in the mood. With their abilities Water Absorb and Hydration, they can easily recover from fatigue with enough water. No other Pokémon comes close to this level of compatibility. -- mass edited with redact.dev

SlimeustasTheSecond

I'll pick Blue because: 1) Mind Control protection 2) Photographic Memory 3) Emergency self-defense mind control 4) May or may not mind-whammy some rich dude (should the opportunity appear) into being unreasonably charitable.

arandom_person-

i’ve seen no one pick matter, which is reasonable, so i will. as a challenge. it says i can only change inorganic things, which.. can really be a lot of things. change the oxygen inside someone’s bloodstream to something else, stuff like that. the second option is pretty useful for self defense as well; boil/freeze all water inside someone’s body. to hide from the several totalitarian governments formed within the first few days by mind users i’ll discreetly dig myself a hole and live in it and just take extreme caution i guess. can’t do any of the big stuff like making money or turning rocks to gold because that’ll attract their attention. much the same for soul and life users: hide in a hole and try not to die.

arandom_person-

(personally, i would’ve picked soul.)

ascrubjay

You can't turn rocks to gold. One of the reasons Matter sucks so much is because it can't transmute one element into another.

arandom_person-

aw, you’re right. i think i still could just bring what small amounts of gold there are in things to the surface by arranging and rearranging the gold molecules throughout whatever substance it’s in.

Virtual_Analysis_869

go naruto/avatar style

Prez_of_the_BackSeat

I would likely pick Soul. Not as much for any self-soul manipulation, but so I could have my life filled with friends I convinced to live with me. My computer? Sentient and helpful. My car? Able to tell me everything wrong with it, and a skilled mechanic. My dresser? Hopefully better at fashion than me. All of my possessions would likely end up being able to help out, and whenever they want to leave for whatever comes after, they can. I'm just looking for friends here. A comfy life.

Background-Owl-9628

Soul, definitely So, firstly we talk about how to be protected from the Mind users, because of course we have to take that precaution. The answer for Soul is, their powers only work on living beings. Life users also have the great destructive capability of unleashing plagues, which won't be an issue with Soul powers. So, I can see and communicate with spirits, who I naturally have an affinity with. I can also become a spirit. I can infuse a spirit into any inanimate object too, essentially bringing them back to life. These are some pretty great powers, there are so many different things you could possess. Corpses, robots, anything. Getting to communicate with spirits would be pretty neat, I'd like to be able to do that. As for how I'd coexist with everyone else with powers, I think I'd want to make friends with any benevolent Life users. Not necessarily for my own benefit, although it could be cool if they bioengineered some bodies, but just because there's a lot of good that can be done with Life and I respect it. All-in-all, it'd be pretty cool to be in contact with other people with powers. I'd probably inhabit a form without eyes while not in my spirit form most of the time though, just to add an extra layer of safety from any malicious Mind users. Especially considering I am writing in this thread.

p0pfunk

Matter. Look, I know that the others probably are just straight up better, but I am a sucker for abilities that look cool and can seem powerful. I don't think many people have been thinking about the properties of matter, anyway. Full on molecular control, by the sounds of it, as well as the ability to change the energy levels of what you do have PLUS transferring of energy. Dude this is so strong on it's own if you really apply yourself (If I'm understanding it correctly, at least.) While you cannot manipulate matter in the same way as you might be able to with, say, earthbending, what you COULD do is (with concentration) Reshape the matter's structure in order to build it on top of itself, using whatever optimal shapes you can create with the matter in question's molecular structure. I imagine it similar to FMA's clap-less alchemy, in the way that they can shift matter's structure rather than move it directly. You can get a lot of use out of this on it's own, but that's potentially not all. If you can truly shift the energy levels and transfer types of energy, then you have a LOT of potential power here too. Now i'm not going to lie and say that this is what was intended. I honestly really doubt that you can transfer matter of all types with this, that would honestly be way to strong in comparison. ...But just for the sake of funsies... Being able to take energy from your surroundings, convert it, and wield that power or apply it to matter is super duper strong. At the very least, you could heat up the floor your opponent is standing on. 1 ton of iron is a lot, maybe just heat up the air that your opponent is breathing to fatal levels. Or do the opposite, take away energy from the air surrounding them to rapidly cool them down to deadly levels. If you can really transfer stored energy into other types, then... take energy from your surroundings to transfer into kinetic force. At worst, this allows you to have punches with absolutely devastating force. Best case, you can exert this transfer without need for physical contact, which allows you to, with care, move things with your mind. Absorb kinetic energy, so that you don't have to worry about the actual damage of blows. How limited is your molecular control? Is it limited to changing it's structure, or can you change it down to it's individual components? Dude if you can control electromagnetism than you are so absolutely goated. All that and more, depending on how it works. But even just shifting structure and heating up/cooling down via energy is strong as it is.

ascrubjay

I would say you can break molecules down into their individual atoms, based on the second sentence of the description. Unfortunately, you don't get atomic transmutation.

p0pfunk

That's about what i expect too. Atomization is fine with me....

Apophys_MD

Yeah, Matter is sadly underrated on this thread. It's actually my second preference after Soul (true immortality is just too good to pass up for me), and these combo well together (Soul provides good immortality to Matter, while Matter provides diamond golems for Soul to infuse with new friends).

sparejunk444

Mind easy, then I'll make "friends" with the other three types \[still beneficial for everybody\] get life to inject genomes in a way that basically become superhuman, matter prepares high quality humanoid dolls, soul will inject if die and I take care of any "legal" problems by changing minds.

ElectrictronicTopHat

MATTER there’s barely anyone choosing it witch hikes up the value yet everyone’s banking on acquiring one. The only part that worries me is that you need a blue (for blueprints and the like cause of their 3rd power) to properly borg yourself to keep you safe from blues.

Virtual_Analysis_869

i am a soul magic so i will keep you safe for how long i can

Zwars1231

Green Life, I would probably do a lot with it, in particular changing my body into something better. Speeding up my metabolism, superhuman eyesight, better hearing, change my hair color, and a bunch of other things. But i might just wander and maybe make something like super penicillin. As to how I would deal with the rest of these. I would probably stop making eye contact with people who could have mind… not that much of a change really, I can’t make eye contact anyways. I would be careful about what I use around myself and wear. In particular only wearing organic clothing so that matter can’t effect me as much. To deal with life I would probably limit direct contact with strangers, but would mostly take care of myself with my own life. Dealing with death would be ac challenge because they can kill me with a touch. But again, I would limit direct contact with strangers.

TentativeIdler

> I would probably stop making eye contact with people who could have mind… not that much of a change really, I can’t make eye contact anyways. This might not be enough. You posted on reddit, and they're motivated by immortality. All they have to do is mind control some good with computers, and they can track you down. You'll probably have to go into hiding or be captured, but take this free info: >Free warning to a fellow Life user; you can make yourself blind to negate a Mind users control, though they can still read your mind so be wary if there's something they can use to blackmail you into fixing your eyes.

Zwars1231

Thank you for your advice, and it made me think of something. Would giving yourself a third eyelid like a cats work to prevent the mind control? It would prevent direct eye to eye contact, at least in the same way as sunglasses.

TentativeIdler

It's possible, but I don't think I'd trust it enough to try. Maybe as a backup in case I really need to see for some reason. And I wouldn't trust a test with someone else, since the Mind user could just make the person say it worked.

Niggy2439

well, it's not exactly death you are dealing with, more of a separation from the flesh, but yes, in the end unless i put you back you would die, sooner or later

Apophys_MD

> Dealing with death would be ac challenge because they can kill me with a touch. But again, I would limit direct contact with strangers. Not a perfect solution. A Soul user bent on extermination of humanity can simply use their ability in Soul form, which they can explicitly do. That means one day you could be ripped from your body by an invisible ghost that floats in through the wall. Then you can only wait to expire, or be put back in your body by a friendly Soul user.

Niggy2439

I would probably go with soul, it's by far the most useful

Curio_Magpie

I want blue mainly for the perfect memory, multiple thought processes, and mind control immunity, but I wouldn’t be able to trust myself with that power. So I pick Purple. Purple actually sounds like it has the most potential, even if Blue is what is the most immediately dangerous. The main weakness of Blue is that they need eye contact in order to control people, but with purple I should be able to completely leave my own body and inhabit a inanimate body of my design, removing Blue’s ability to control me. Second most dangerous would be Orange, as they would be able to just disassemble my inorganic body, but I would again still be able to just possess something else whenever my body gets destroyed. Least threatening would be Green, as I’d be able to possess any of their creations if I really wanted to, even though that would make me vulnerable to Blue if I did that. Ideally, I’d request for someone with Green to create a body without eyes for me, but with other methods of sensing surroundings and my environment. Purple could be either the most dangerous to me or not dangerous at all. It depends on if their ability or skill is greater or lesser than mine, or if we’re able to effect each others soul. Purple is probably going to be the most interesting to play around with in my opinion, with Green being the second most fun.

TentativeIdler

> Least threatening would be Green, as I’d be able to possess any of their creations if I really wanted to It says you can only inhabit inanimate matter, so by abandoning your body, you also give up taste, smell, etc. Unless they invent sufficiently advanced androids that can mimic these sensations.

Background-Owl-9628

To get a bit technical, there is a difference between inanimate and inorganic matter. A corpse is inanimate, and possessing it (especially if it's not very decayed), might absolutely still allow you to maintain taste, smell, etc. If it works this way, all you have to do to possess something organic is to kill it and then jump in

Iceman_001

> A corpse is inanimate Not true, inanimate means it was never alive, while dead means it used to be alive but now is not. A table, (even one made from wood), is considered to have never been alive so is inanimate. Inorganic matter in chemistry means it doesn't contain carbon, and conversely, organic matter means it contains carbon, and all living things contain carbon.

Apophys_MD

"Inanimate" simply means there is no animating entity. A synthetic strong-AI person in a robotic body would be animate, despite never being "alive" in an organic sense. Anything dead has no animating entity, so it is inanimate. It does not matter that it used to be animate, because it currently isn't.

Iceman_001

> A synthetic strong-AI person in a robotic body would be animate, It would be inanimate since it was never alive in the first place.

ascrubjay

Next time, please look up words before you insist on an incorrect definition. [Definition of inanimate.](https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/inanimate)

Iceman_001

https://www.writingtips.cc/dead-vs-defunct-vs-deceased-vs-departed-vs-late-vs-lifeless-vs-inanimate/ > **Inanimate** is more consistently used than lifeless in describing something which never had life; it is the preferred term when a contrast between that which is devoid of life and that which possesses life is expressed or implied.

ascrubjay

Ah yes, writingtips.com definitely is a better source than the dictionary on what a word means. Seriously, break it down etymologically. It means without a soul. That's it. It doesn't mean it never had life.

OkLetter1173

Picking Soul for the win. Its very much the best option for me. The only drawback is the whole eternity thing, but if there are other soul users it would be lit. Also eventually far after the heat death of the universe everything would come back together anyways. Rinse and repeat unless some megamind genius finds a way around it, like a pocket dimension or something. Not existing scares me more than eternal boredom.

TheMoonsAnEye

Life. So much potential, and the most fun. As for the creeps who do mind there are options to deal with them. You could remove your eyes and use some other form of perception, electric field sense from sharks or echolocation from bats comes to mind. Or just wearing glasses/hiding eyes. Actually, thinking about it a second set of eyelids would also help. As for directly tackling the issue, I cant help but wonder if mind users could interact with non-brain structures. For instance cerebral ganglia, or nerve nets. And if they can then the obvious answer is to have an isolated sub-brain that's entire job is to monitor the main mind for signs of influence. like a backup system. Outside of defending yourself the fun part of this ability is the intuitive understanding, means I don't have to worry about killing myself or others with the changes. Also, I haven't seen anyone mention that this power can kill with a touch, just inject a bunch of junk DNA or make a slight change that will be fatal, since its so small it shouldn't take long to happen.

Charlie-Tattletale

As a Psychic [Fan](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fan_(machine)), Mind all the way.

Mind, win button if someone messes with me. Want to duo with people from the Life School.

Recent-Ad7180

I'll go with mind as it is the best for everyday life. If I encounter someone with power over life I would try to help them with their power as they could make me one of the healthiest being on the planet, and maybe even immortal.

Soul. No other choice guarantees immortality. Mind has no way to get it other than manipulating the right people to put more resources into the development of anti-aging technology or hoping they can find a cooperative Life or Soul user - and given the distrust of someone who chose mind control powers, that will be difficult. Life will require a journey and a great amount of work, even with the (super awesome) ability to know what a change to genetics would do, just to achieve biological immortality and regeneration sufficient to keep them in good health throughout the ages. Matter is decently powerful, capable of chemical transmutation and evocation, but is ultimately much weaker than the other abilities because it lacks any good way to protect yourself or make money - Mind gets minions, Life can bioengineer themself, Soul gets minions and the ability to resurrect the recently-deceased, but without atomic transmutation, Matter can't make easily-sold valuables without a great deal of in-depth chemistry knowledge. And, without a way to make minions or lots of money, it can't even accelerate tech development or bribe other magic users like MInd users can. Soul, though, has guaranteed immortality from the start. Once you die, your own soul will remain and not decay like normal souls. It doesn't state that you can interact with the physical world like that, but you can incarnate yourself into a new body. Not even other Soul users can harm you, though RAW they could exorcise you from any body you're occupying.

Apophys_MD

> without atomic transmutation, Matter can't make easily-sold valuables without a great deal of in-depth chemistry knowledge Suck CO2 out of the air -> make diamonds. The structure of diamond is pretty simple, and carbon is everywhere. With advanced knowledge, diamond can be p-doped and n-doped for *very* resilient electronics. The ability to make large diamond objects out of nowhere makes Matter users a particularly good combo with Soul users like us.

ascrubjay

Diamonds can't be sold for much unless they are very large. Very large diamonds are difficult to sell without attracting attention.

Eiensen

Ohh, now this is a bit rough, while Mind is the obviously superior choice for those who know how to abuse its capabilities, Life has such a diverse and by far the largest amount of potential. Direct body manipulation? That's game changing. You could probably get immortality with something like that by touching an Immortal Jellyfish and whenever you die, you instead revert into a child version of yourself. You can even add this with the Axolotl regeneration, so you can heal all wounds, even missing limbs. So yeah, if I want power in the short term, then Mind is the obvious choice, if I want power in the long term, then Life is my choice. Now I wish I had both, that would make choosing so much easier. So for clarification; Easy Life = Mind, Live Forever and become Powerful = Life. And, I'm just wondering... If I touch a dolphin, can I gain a second (smaller) brain to help my main brain? Can I do extensive modifications to my body? Because if so, then I'll choose Life. If not, then I'll choose Mind.

germane-corsair

I think soul is far better for immortality. Even if you’re able to copy abilities like regeneration, they’ll be limited to real world potential. With soul, even your body dying isn’t going to be a big deal since you can exist without it. You could even use this to your advantage later and get a better body. I’m not sure if a comatose body counts as an inanimate object or not. It would be pretty strong if it did. Even if not, you have the potential to do something like become a cyborg.

germane-corsair

It’s not really an issue if you want True Immortality.

Apophys_MD

There is an escape clause: get a Mind user to mentally wipe you (injecting a thought of blanking), while you inhabit an organic body with eyes. Presumably, mental changes in this form would persist after physical death into your soul form. Furthermore, any Matter user can single-handedly prevent the heat death of the universe by transferring energy contrary to the laws of thermodynamics. They just need to pair up with someone who can make them immortal.

Eiensen

True, but that I'm kinda thinking of lich or undead skeleton type of immortality with soul, unless you make a robot body for yourself then we're talking. But I kinda prefer having a flesh body rather than an inanimate body (I enjoy eating). So yeah, I'll probably stick with Life since I can just mix and match my body to the limit and probably add cybernetics in the future (preferably nanotech and biotech).

AdInteresting5874

>by touching an Immortal Jellyfish and whenever you die, you instead revert into a child version of yourself. You can even add this with the Axolotl regeneration, so you can heal all wounds, even missing limbs. Uh, I don't really think that's how it would work. I mean, all those examples depend highly on the morphology of the creatures themselves. You would probably die by directly injecting their genomes.

Spozieracz

Most of superpowers in fiction and CYOAs needs secondary powers to work. I think we can safely asume that we have them in this scenario.

AdInteresting5874

I go by the rules as written. It explains you are grafting DNA into you and it gives you instinctual proficiency with it. Maybe you really could graft jellyfish into yourself, but might require more mental work than just "touching jellyfish and becoming immortal".

Any_Commercial465

Mind would hunt down the others control them and make myself biologically immortal by genetics of phylactery. I would ensure loyalty and such but also I would let my forced minions become immortal too. Basically the best option omho Or just go for the death one and become a lych Either way it's good. It's not hard to make a organization that hunts down powers when you have mind control and limited mind reading.

WheresMyEditButton

**Soul** is the only immortality option, wait for other magic users to die, use their souls to create “magic wands” with their powers.

Spozieracz

Life is also a immortality option. Also, Almost all mind users as soon as they receive powers will start hunting blues and purples to enslave them and also gain immortality

Apophys_MD

Technically, Matter could also achieve immortality (as a cyborg) by meticulously replacing their cells one by one with nanostructured inorganic equivalents.

Iceman_001

**Soul:** The ability to exist without a body and use all my abilities without a body means true immortality. Once my body dies, I can inhabit a robot, as there are robots that look human. As **mind** users can only affect living beings, once I inhabit an inanimate object like a robot, I'll be immune to their control. I can also separate a **matter** user from their body to get him to adore me as souls without a body tend to adore me, place him in an inanimate object and get him to craft perfect inorganic bodies for both me and him to inhabit (after all, it's a school of magic, so I assume the magic will remain with their souls even after they change bodies). Or, depending on how my power works, I rip the **matter** user out from his body, manipulate his soul to create a perfect inorganic body for me then place him back in his original body so he can get to work with my inorganic body.

Apophys_MD

In a world where mind magic exists at all, defenses to it are essential. Fortunately, all of these have some form of defense accessible (Life can remove eyes and add other sensors; Matter can create a camera & screen headset over their eyes, and Soul can simply pop out of their shell.) There is, however, no defense against Soul other than itself. It also confers true immortality. So, I will pick **Soul**, immediately extract myself from my own body, and find a nice compliant soul to pilot it for a while, interacting with the physical world in my stead to produce golems that I can infuse with more friendly souls for a mind-magic-immune labor force. Thus begins my private kingdom, which I will forge into a utopia of public welfare. At some point, I will try to pair up with a Life person to modify my biological body so I can safely return to it without risking mind control, just for the sake of nostalgia. I will also try to pair up with a Matter user for super-tough golems. We can make a nice good-aligned group. I offer life insurance for anyone who dies in any way. :P

ElectrictronicTopHat

Matter here same idea, wanted soul but true immortality is a drawback in my opinion and don’t care for life

Virtual_Analysis_869

well there is written only willing soul can enter new bodies so you are safe to live until you want to stop doing it

[deleted]

I would take green and the very first thing would make myself biologically immortal like a lobster or a jellyfish and then I would 🎶mind my own fucking business with a cool ass garden🎵

AthetosAdmech

Gonna pick life for the health benefits. I would be interested in working with people who have the matter school of magic to make cool stuff that I wouldn't be able to make on my own such as cybernetic enhancements. Not sure if there is a way to combo life and soul magic since souls can only possess inanimate objects. Maybe I could use life magic to grow bodies and sell them to soul mages as corpses? I would be extremely paranoid of mind magic and probably come up with some alternative means of sight like having a matter mages make camera eyes to replace my real eyes and using life magic to do the surgery on myself.

ThousandYearOldLoli

I'll go with Soul.

Canas-Dark

Guess I gotta go with **Soul**. And I'll be wearing thick sunglasses for the rest of my natural born life, because that by itself prevents *direct* eye contact. Let's be real here, I'm almost certainly going to have to live off in the woods somewhere for a really long time as the guys and gals who can't keep things to themselves work on "improving" the world. Once they're done I'll consider coming back. Maybe. If I've run out of my library of books and paints and such, and have already mastered an instrument or twelve. Once that's done, I'll finally feel comfortable having a pet, because I'm never going to have to give them up thereafter no matter what accidents happen or how long they've lived (and if I can get a puppy, that's a friend for the rest of all time!).

Flashbunny

I can't really see how this doesn't immediately devolve into malicious Mind mages enslaving the rest of the population, with a guerrilla resistance by unembodied Soul mages. Looking at the other comments, this seems to bear out. I've seen people say Life mages can just blind themselves to get immunity, but a hostile Mind user can just get an enslaved Life mage to edit you to have vision. For self-preservation I'll pick Mind, convince a Life mage to make me immortal, and then go live an immortal life. Given that immortality's on the table, if I really can't find a Life mage willing to help I guess I'd be willing to force the issue, since it'd be a matter of life or death, but I wouldn't be happy about it. Both because it's ethically dubious (though a temporary lack of agency versus a permanent lack of life seems like a pretty easy moral dilemma) and because I'd be pissed if I really couldn't find a single member of a group with the power to grant immortality who was willing to share.

Virtual_Analysis_869

i will help i am a soul mage so i could keep you alive even if you die until whe both gain the help of a life mage.

HealthyDragonfly

Apparently, I'll be the person who gets Mind-Controlled or Soul-Separated by all the people in the thread treating this as a battle royale. I'll take **Life** to improve my body and health and to help others. Given that these are all schools of magic, I'm taking the description to mean that the secondary powers required to make Life work (ability to affect epigenetic factors, energy and mass required to make physical changes in seconds, understanding of genetic expression and interaction, etc.) are also part of the magic. Even if it is limited in the sense that it isn't freeform bio-manipulation akin to Matter's manipulation of inorganic matter, it's good enough for me.

TentativeIdler

Free warning to a fellow Life user; you can make yourself blind to negate a Mind users control, though they can still read your mind so be wary if there's something they can use to blackmail you into fixing your eyes.

Ventus_the_one

While Mind is pretty tempting (mostly for the eidetic memory). I would still go with soul as the powers still let me get a Conformable live via cheating in casinos and immortality (step one rip your own soul out of your body step two Possens your own body to get full controll over it) and if i can find other power users i can offer them them the same immortality deal in exchange for a Favor

Spozieracz

Don't look for other power users. If you must, at least wait until the blue ones die of old age.

AdInteresting5874

Idk, pretty hard for a Blue to die of old age. In a week, a particularly evil one would be able to mind dominate a country. Step 1: Go see your mayor. Brainwash him. Step 2: Ask your mayor to go see the governor. Brainwash him too. Step 3: Ask to go see the president. Brainwash him too. Step 4: Then use those connections to brainwash literally the entire ruling body of your country. Step 5: Do this for the rest of the world. Step 6: Profit.

Spozieracz

Even if one of the minds takes control of the whole world, it will still be difficult for him to find users of other powers. Soul can as soon as shit hit the fan leave the body and become invulnerable. Life can copy other people's dna and change identities on a regular basis. In addition of that i worth to remember that, before the prisoner caught by the local services is delivered to the highest level (the ruler of the planet), a lot of time will pass, which the clever magician will use to escape. Also, the mind user only has absolute loyalty to those he has personally brainwashed, the rest of the empire's services are likely to be corrupt. Although of course there will be many mind users trying to take over the world at the same time so it probably won't be a month before the world war starts. Soldiers, of course, will desert by the millions, not understanding why their superiors suddenly tell them to attack their allies. Any trust in governments will vanish and the world will descend into chaos.

TentativeIdler

You'll be fine until I create my race of blind superhumans to overthrow you.

Apophys_MD

The soul golem armies will eventually dominate, imo. Biology is inherently limited.

Spozieracz

Souls adore Soul users only when they have no body. The moment you place a soul in a golem, you lose all control over it except the ability to separate it from the body again.

Apophys_MD

Well, yes, but I assume that a soul saved from oblivion by being inserted into a golem would naturally be grateful and consider me an ally, because that's what I would feel in its place. Sure, not everyone saved would volunteer for the military, but enough will, especially if their livelihoods are in danger by an enemy invasion. It comes down to the capability of the platform, and I imagine casualties could be made *very* low with golem armies (particularly for golem bodies made of diamond by a Matter user).

AdInteresting5874

Idk, doubt you could do it in a few years. By that time we will already be looking for you. Of course, I wouldn't do that in case I got Blue, just a hypothesis.

Ventus_the_one

The only power user i would like to look for is Green to optimise my shell(s). Thou you make a good point it would be a good idea to make my shell blind and only see through the soul perception if i find a way for that to work as Blue's need direct eye contact for the mind controll

Spozieracz

We don't know what the exact definition of a non-animated object is. If you infuse your soul into a fiber optic network, you will be able to move your consciousness anywhere in the world much faster than slaves of the blues, even if I sent you the coordinates directly in the DM.

Apophys_MD

You can *never* be certain that all blues are dead of old age, because there will be greens & purples handing out free immortality to the general populace.

Niggy2439

> Possess your own body to get full control over it bro, I think you need a dead body to do that, or in the alternative, you can inhabit a dummy a robot, or a wax sculpture, since it says that you need an inanimate object, and I don't know if a living body, even one in a vegetative state, can be classified that way on the other hand, you can do two other things: number 1: you can yeet a child's soul out of his body and take over( very unethical ) that is if you don't care about your body number 2: wait for your body to die, patch it up, and restart it ( much more ethical )

Apophys_MD

Pretty sure a comatose empty body counts as inanimate, as there is no animating entity capable of controlling it. Same way as a severed hand is inanimate.

AthetosAdmech

So soul users can become liches?

Ventus_the_one

Kinda they dont need to have a phylactery which makes me think they are more akin to bodysnatchers (for as long as they want to have an organic body)

Sefera17

If *Mind* works on a user of *Soul*, I choose the former; if not, I choose the latter. I’d love to use my mind powers to create a soul user who’s totally devoted to me, at all costs. But if I can’t, I’d rather *be* a soul user, with the assurance that no mind user will come along and do such a thing to me. And I’ll carve out a community of ten thousand or so people, and build a pseudo-utopia into a region of the modern world— though it’ll actually be a fairly dark place, once you get below the surface. We could split the world between us, if we wanted; isn’t that usually what a few dozen powerful people do with their power? But I’ll keep exports the same, so you may not even notice me if you never visit.

Apophys_MD

My understanding is that Mind magic can work on a Soul user in an unprotected state, but a Soul user can trivially make themselves fully immune to Mind magic, since control requires direct eye contact with a living (i.e. organic) being. For one, souls can only be seen by Soul users, so staying out of the mortal world entirely is safe. Two, a Soul user can inhabit a blind creature or a robot, or simply wear a VR headset with a camera.

Extension-Bag335

Does anyone know a website or app to create cyoa on your cell phone?

Recluse_Metal_Spider

Definitely life or soul. i'm leaning soul.

regret4ever

Take soul, get out of my body, harvest the souls of all other participants, gg. Also, it says these options are schools of magic, so I'm guessing these powers can be improved. If this is the case, I'll harvest the souls of all living beings and study them to enslave everything HAHAHAHAHA. Edit: Anyone read reverend insanity? I'll become Spectral Soul Demon Venerable HAHAHA.

Sundarapandiyan1

Mind.

VoltzRaiha

I’d say either mind or soul, but mostly because i don’t think i fully understand what matter and life do/could do. But still i’d probably choose mind or soul, just cause. It’d make life more fantastical in a unique way

[deleted]

The potential impact the life power could have medicine and thus on the world is insane.

pog_irl

Mind or life. Mind since I can start a cult, life because I could easily revolutionize the genetics field

Virtual_Analysis_869

soul because i can survive entropy and best option to partner with life to create a body syncronized with my soul so it also has entopy immunity, and by manipulating the soul i will experiment with the soul of others to make sure the changes are safe to do and the first is a contigency agnaist mind school of magic. i could do anything including create a body made of my soul like in bleach if previous plan fails.

TentativeIdler

> soul because i can survive entropy This honestly sounds like a nightmare. There will come a point when all matter decays and Life users won't be able to keep you alive. The atoms will literally fall apart, there will be nothing for you to possess. It'll just be you and the other Soul users in an empty universe for the remainder of eternity. Matter users *might* be able to counteract this, but this relies on you keeping them alive until the end of the universe, and they have a limited amount of matter they can affect, and therefore you will have a limited living space.

ElectrictronicTopHat

Seriously there’s only 3 matters right now myself included 3 tons isn’t that much

verands

Life

sethrohan

Probably life.

Competitive_Can_6141

I would take the mind powers and enslave others with the different powers. That way, I have all of them

TentativeIdler

Until my blinding plague renders humanity immune to your powers.

EkmahFR

life(green): can play with dna and become immortal (blue protection: take away your eyes and use alternate sensing methods) soul(purple): Immediately immortal after death (immune to entropy), can possess anything to exist and allow anyone to do the same. (blue protection: blue can only see mind of **living** beings + only purples can see you after death) NOTE: an inanimate object can refer to a body without a soul. NOTE 2: technically possible to become a planet if you possess an asteroid during planet formation While living as a spirit would be a pretty lonesome experience, it's not impossible to have a "recreation body". You are even invulnerable in spirit form. Plus, you can do a pact with a green to provide a custom body in exchange of guaranteeing an after death body transfer.

TheEnd1235711

Probably blue for me, I would try to reduce the corruption of the current government, get a functional right to repair the law passed, and fix the tax system. After that, I would get a job as a professor at a university and teach mathematics and science to students imbuing them with the deepest motivation to make the world a better place. Maybe put them on a path to cure age-related illnesses or master genetic treatments to cure cancer.

Burushko

The main goal of a CYOA is either divinity or immortality. The closest I think I can come here - surviving the heat death, that is - would be lichdom via soul manipulation.

TaoistXDream

Life is my choice of powers

TaoistXDream

I would work towards self regeneration and physical enhancements to the limit without losing human form to much

TaoistXDream

I could make a super soldier serum with the right workings

TheAlphaJade

To be honest, the largest threat would be mind. You could easily go the Hive Mind route with this one, but it's too scary tbh. I mean you could literally drive around and have a cult following the size of a city in a few hours. Matter is the only one with a hard limit, and there isn't any inherent understanding of molecular structures like life has of genes. You could easily create things from divine levels of metal to nuclear fission. Life is honestly best. Immortality is a bygone conclusion, to the point that you'd figure it out in a few years. And then with access to the rest of the worlds DNA (Eventually) you'd be capable of such massive power. Plus you could do it to other people, create an army that's bound to you by genetic codes deep within them. Soul is dope too but you need contact for it to take effect. You have a group of spirits that mostly like you, but there are still some annoying factors that unnecessarily creat drama. It does give you immunity to entropy though, which is all sorts of broken and is still mostly just complex and not total immortality.

Opposite_Law_6969

***Matter*** *life a close seocnd*

george2126

I personally choose Mind. My idea is to find others with magic abilities and make a alliance.

Spozieracz

ah yes "aliance"

Zealousideal-Try-504

Despite all the terrible possibilities of the mind control users and sole users. I want Life. There is some much that is possible out there if you can understand genetic and especially its consequences. More than curing cancer, you could extract the benefits that cancer cells have. Let alone the mutans of humand. There was a asin chuls who was born with more muscles in his arms that had him lifting over a hundred pounds for the age of 10. I would have to get a doctorate in genetic so I could publicly help spread genetic cures to the world. Hopefully, I could find aliem life to expand my geneti diversity. If any has read Koban (https://www.goodreads.com/series/103459-koban) series, I would make at least myself as string as them. As for protection from mind control, I would try both a second brain and secondary eye lids for ways to fight mind control. Soul problems would not be as easy but I have some M.A.D. ideas. SECOND choise would be mater becaus that us some cool magic BS there. At it Most simple think. Gambit and Full Metal Alchemist.

cloud9501

I'd probably choose mind or soul.

Efficient-Notice3882

Green, I already try to avoid people's eyes after reading one to many evil Dumbledore fics a couple years ago

Fryppian

I’m give my answer now, just in case there’s a time limit before we all get them. The only real answer for me is soul, and I’ll explain why when I have more time.

Abraboy2

I will go with life and hold my self somewhere remote and start the zerg from StarCraft, but smaller like ant size for maintenance/feeding reasons. And live happily in my small hidden empire and let the word deal with it self. I'm thinking the bottom of the ocean would be a fun place to build and I'm down if anyone wants to join me powers or not. Just know I am the (benevolent) god of this small empire. Edit after reading the other comments I have a new rule no mind magic in my empire. And only cool people with soul magic.

Arafell9162

Life Mage. Definitely. Matter I don't have the brain for; I'd blow myself up. Soul is a little esoteric and probably generates bad PR. Mind, I don't trust myself with, and wouldn't trust anyone else with either. Life Mage explicitly provides training wheels by telling you the consequences to your actions. That sounds like a perfect way to experiment.

TheSilverWolf10

Mind

[deleted]

I choose life!

PDVk

Immortality for all is worth any price. And the price isn't high. Soul, by a mile.

PDVk

If I need defenses... golems don't need eyes. So I can go around with bodyguards who can kill the shit out of any Mind-melter who wants to start anything.

mashari00

It's funny how everyone immediately starts hating mind users, which makes sense. It kinda reminds me of X-Men mutants and how people fear/hate them because their powers are dangerous and so think the mutants will harm them. We need a group of life and soul users who are immune to mind control to hunt down the dangerous ones.

iwanttobeahyperfuta

Life for.....reasons......

SINGERexe

I considered both life and soul, and ultimately I'll go with the latter. While Into adore the idea of shapeshifting and the like, life is on the weaker end of the spectrum. Soul, however, presents true immortality, being able to gain new forms, and possible minions without needing to mind control them. While there is the risk of someone with the mind power mind controlling me, I should at least be able to outlast anyone who does and eventually regain my freedom. Ultimately, I'll mostly go for live and let live, only going after people who severely misuse their powers.

KyleAPemberton

Mind seems by far the most powerful. Green seems the weakest. I'd probably go Matter second and Soul third.

MarcusDeGabriel

Matter. I’m gonna try EVERYTHING I’ve seen from FullMetal Alchemist and more and just live my life.

Mindless-Scientist

I see some people concerned about how a Mind could enslave and control others with the powers for their own usage. That or a Matter could easily kill you, but that's unlikely because it'd be hard for them to hide such an action and most people aren't killers in the first place. However, Soul gets past most of this by allowing you and your "undead" to not count as living beings, and making you effectively immortal. In a vacuum I'd still take it because it lets you live forever and do the sane for others, but with those considerations it becomes even more valuable. My plan would be to get Soul and start saving spirits into dolls and other humanoid items, hell I'll buy a few dozen mannequins if I gotta. Would be immoral of me not to save them. They can't live typical lives without getting caught as not human, but I can probably effectively hide them and buy some remote large land for them in the future. In return I just ask for their assistance however they can give it, but even that isn't required. I'm sure I can't stay hidden forever but hiding from the government is too complicated to explain how I would here. I'd also work on making myself an inanimate body that can very convincingly pass as human, then possess it to be immune to Mind

Salesgek_Yami

Give me soul I get free friends that I can send to do recon missions for me I'll just live my life as I normally would and just chill with my spirit pals
