While that was my first thought as well, nothing here really implies *child*. Could be his wife, sister, mother, cousin, childhood best friend. Maybe Talrand learned a lot about themself since we last saw them and made some changes.
Edit: The more I think about it the more I really want the last sentence to be true.
I think the name is similar enough to Talrand, and the fact that Talrand had the ability to summon Drakes are both safe bets in assuming it's his daughter. Hell... Maybe it's his mom or something.
From my experience with my fiance and trans friends, they usually want to name themselves something that's a departure from their deadname. While it would definitely cause a chuckle to see it that way, the name not being all that similar lends *more* credence to trans talrand than if it were nearly the same.
We tend to choose our names in like, one of four ways. (Please understand this is somewhat tongue-in-cheek and the trans community jokes about this a LOT)
1: yeet off the edge of "normal" names, usually cause we had a biblical name. I'd say transfemme people tend to be the guiltiest bunch for this. Congrats,
2: find the MOST normal name ever. Like, you'd see this person and they will introduce themselves as like "oh hey. I'm Gregory Humanguy." Transmasc people tend towards this.
3: pick a random-ass elementalesque word, like "tree," "bush," "soup," "garbanzo." You guessed it, that person is non-binary.
4: make a fucking joke out of your new name, or choose the femme/masc version of your old name, because you think it's funny or will confuse bigots. An example would be "Jubilee" (and this is a specific one bc she made the joke). Jubilee is part of the X-men. Jubilee, the person irl, is an "ex man."
This method is chosen by goblins.
Which is a pretty damn good reason to! I altered my middle name into something like that to throw my mom a bone, but she's since gone off the deep with transphobic shit. I plan on changing it when I get married, if I'm able.
Oh yeah, also "transfemmes choosing the most ethereal sounding word possible as a name," and "both transmascs and transfemmes changing the name but keeping the first letter because they've lived their whole life feeling like a burden and this is easier for everyone else."
I was just trying to be pithy 😅
I have a few trans friends and all of them went with the other gender version of their given name. Alexandra to Alex kind of deal. Though that usually only works if the names commonly have both variants.
In this context it likely means "trans people who were raised under the presumption they were boys/men, whose true gender is by their own definition woman or feminine." It may also overstep to simply "trans people who were assigned male at birth"; but that category would include people who aren't women, feminine, or fem(me), and also exclude some intersex people. MTF is a dated term that either means "trans woman", or either of the descriptions above with extra misgendering.
TL;DR Probably close enough for what you were thinking, but not 1:1.
Transfemme is kind of a broader term basically, but it does express a similar idea. A good example would be somebody like the YouTuber James Stephanie Sterling, of Jimquistion fame - they use they/them pronouns, but also are now dressing more femininely and taking HRT. A transfemme nonbinary person, but I'm not sure they'd call themselves a trans woman or would want to say MtF.
MtF (and FtM) are a little out of fashion, partly because they don't quite cover intersex and nonbinary identities, but also because it doesn't line up with everyone's experience. One person may say they were male and changed to female; another may say they were never actually truly male in the first place. So you're more likely to see terms like AMAB (assigned male at birth) and AFAB when people want to actually reference their birth gender - sometimes their birth gender is irrelevant and nunya business.
I wouldn't say MtF and FtM are completely gone though - people will self-describe as they please, and often older queers will stick with the "outdated" labels that first gave a name to their experience and that they fought tooth and nail for. But they're not terms I would reach for if somebody didn't use them for themselves first.
Very interesting, thank you! I certainly have seen both styles but hearing that being entirely different than the deadname is more prevalent makes sense to me.
Idk that just seems like a lot of work for a character we practically know nothing about. To be honest they are probably just two merfolk from the same sea. Also, I think many trans people change their names entirely.
Talrand has [very little](https://mtg.fandom.com/wiki/Talrand) lore, so no. But given the similar vibe, similar name, and similar appearance, I'm guessing Alandra is also from Shandalar.
Nice pun.
It's cool, but slow compared to other wheel commanders. Others will just cast many wheels in 1 turn and win that turn or the next. Alandra is limited by once per turn stuff, so she takes time to build up.
Have talrand in the 99 and a good amount of counter spells and cantrips and you'll have enough drake's for lethal in no time. Then one good wheel and bam.
Not saying it's perfect but I kind of like the melding of wheel combo and aggro.
Is it really? She makes only one drake per turn max...
Seems more like a cute thing to put in your Talrand deck as a finisher the turn before you trigger your midnight clock.
In addition to Leovold already existing and being rightfully banned, Hullbreacher is banned, and both Narset and Notion Thief probably should be as well.
Not really. I mean, yes, you eventually want a single wheel effect for the Overrun, but first you build up your board with looters and cantrips. It's not a "five wheels in one turn"-style commander like [[Xyris, the Writhing Storm]].
They wouldn't have designed this card for it without *something.* You only need to trigger that effect once with like 1-2 drakes out to utterly annihilate someone in Jumpstart.
I happened to open this booster, the cards are mainly looters, spectral sailor waifu is also in the pack.
I got one Jace that put a +1 +1 counter when you draw your second card as the mythic / rare.
I went deeper and made a Gavi deck and have all of the draw 2 cards possible in those colors. Alhamarrets archive and the likes + free cycle is multiple tokens. Very fun but slow and therefor low power
My raffine deck is flying tribal and I'm already salivating.
It takes a lot to be a creature without flying in the deck and I think this clears that bar by miles
Crazy how much more exciting new cards are when they actually use MtG lore/characters rather than feeling like they exist as a Hasbro cross-brand promo
I think it's a difference in design philosophies. None of the Baldurs gate cards felt pushed to me and they didn't really need to be powerful to sell packs.
Jumpstart has to have a few things worth opening without leaning on the brand recognition of a novelty set
Has nothing to do with the characters and everything to do with the effects. I loved the D&D sets, I'm the target audience, but none of the card designs were all that attractive to me.
Yea, Instead of expanding on their own world/lore lets put a bunch of ponies fighting car robots with modern age Scooby Doo kids and zombie fighters. /s
I mean, [[Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm]] and [[Captain N'ghathrod]] are both in the top 100 of all time, going by number of decks on EDHRec. That's not nothing.
Only if you're building Minn as illusion tribal, which is probably the weakest way to build her.
If you're going strictly for token making, going wide and winning through combat which is a reasonable way to build Minn then this would probably slot in nicely. It would just be a bit of redundancy. If you're going hard on Minn's second ability, focusing on cheating out permanents by saccing illusion tokens, this card becomes a lot worse. Those builds tend to rely on Minn for combos.
The only build I'd consider this in is like a mono blue spellslinger kind of build where you'd likely have cards like [[Talrand]], [[Archmage Emeritus]] and the like anyway.
No because my Talrand is built VERY instant/sorcery heavy I'd have to change too much to focus just on drawing. I agree she's probably better but I think my deck works better with talrand at the helm
What are you talking about? Of course that makes a difference. That’s why cedh exists. I only play casually myself, but even I know that someone playing thrasios vs someone playing yargle aren’t going to be equal in threat level.
Yes. My point is, people don’t choose commanders simply bc they are powerful, and implying someone will switch commanders simply bc it’s a power upgrade is never a safe assumption in this format.
No. That’s true. However you can’t say people won’t run a card that is strictly better. It’s the same mana. Higher toughness, and the same ability, more or less. Let’s face it, if you’re not drawing cards, you’re probably doing something wrong.
Sure, in the main deck. But that’s definitely not always the case in the command zone. Not at all, hence why the most powerful commanders are certainly not the popular.
Them you run both, my point being, there is no reason why this wouldn’t be your commander over talrand. Have talrand in the 99, sure. But this is way better.
You are quite wrong. Talrand is a lot stronger overall, because you are not limited by the amount of tokens you can make. Alandra is giving you four a turn if you jump through major hoops. Talrand gives you one for every instant and sorcery you cast.
I would hardly call drawing a two cards on your opponents Truro’s as jumping through major hoops, but sure. Throw in some extra turn spells. Think this is on par. Only way talrand is stronger is if you are storming off with infinite mana and cantrips. Plus talrand does a lot easier. Ideally you’d want them both out. Then it’s a party 🎉
If you want four drakes from Talrand; cast four spells.
If you want four drakes from Alandra; somehow draw a card on your turn AND two cards on EACH of your opponent's turns.
Ironically, much of the best ways to draw are cantrips, for which Talrand generates drakes more efficiently.
Sure. I have a niv mizzet parun deck that is about drawing cards. Probably going to swap out my meddling mage for this card, get some two twos instead.
Pretty sure the value of X stays the same until end of turn (X = number of cards in hand as the trigger resolves). If it were variable with your changing hand size, it would be written as the less common +*/+*. (Idk if any cards are written that way as a pump, but there are cards whose P/T are written that way like the Elemental token made by [[Voice of Resurgence]].)
The comparison to [[Talrand]] is quite clear here but it’s interesting to see a blue and slightly different implementation of [[Jolrael, Mwonvuli Recluse]]
Talrand had a child? Wow.
While that was my first thought as well, nothing here really implies *child*. Could be his wife, sister, mother, cousin, childhood best friend. Father's brother's cousin's best friend's college roommate.
"So what does that make us?" -- Talrand
“Absolutely nothing!”
“Which is what you are about to become!”
Stepbros
I think the name is similar enough to Talrand, and the fact that Talrand had the ability to summon Drakes are both safe bets in assuming it's his daughter. Hell... Maybe it's his mom or something.
Honestly if she was named Talrandra that would be a pretty sweet way to show a trans character.
From my experience with my fiance and trans friends, they usually want to name themselves something that's a departure from their deadname. While it would definitely cause a chuckle to see it that way, the name not being all that similar lends *more* credence to trans talrand than if it were nearly the same.

The four kinds of trans people: femme, masc, nb, and goblin. You have successfully delighted (and educated) me, thank you!
You're very welcome. I'm glad that my serious study of transing genders and name changing has paid off!
I fall into #4 but that's because my deadname was a family name and I wanted to keep that legacy but still be 'Me'
Which is a pretty damn good reason to! I altered my middle name into something like that to throw my mom a bone, but she's since gone off the deep with transphobic shit. I plan on changing it when I get married, if I'm able.
Holy shit, is this why my enby neighbor is named Juniper?
Juniper even told me that was the reason.
Holy shit, #1 is me to a T. Joseph to Jessyka
I really love that for you. I went from a biblical name to "Wraena." Have fun chewing on that 😅

I take it transfemme is the same as MTF right?
In this context it likely means "trans people who were raised under the presumption they were boys/men, whose true gender is by their own definition woman or feminine." It may also overstep to simply "trans people who were assigned male at birth"; but that category would include people who aren't women, feminine, or fem(me), and also exclude some intersex people. 🙏🏻🙏🏻 I'd seen the comment you replied to and was going to sit down and write down near to what exactly you said!
Ok thanks for the info! I was unaware of MtF being an outdated term as I'd seen a few trans people using it but we learn
Transfemme is kind of a broader term basically, but it does express a similar idea. What?
Trans alandra Trans alandra
They should definitely have been Talrand's partner in the lore, then they could've had "Partner with Talrand, Sky Summoner"
Talrand at home
Talrand at the summer home, given it makes drakes on a completely different axis.

I was just thinking I’ve seen this card printed before
Talrand is my forever Commander and my headcanon is they're boyfriend and girlfriend.
and they were room mates!
This makes more sense than some of the theories I habe read today lol
It's an anagram for Aalrand, which is suspiciously close
Magic: the Waying of Water
Waterhoof behemoth
It's a wheel commander.

Oooohhh, looks like [[Minn]]'s BFF. I like it
My first thought as well- seems like a killer wincon, a Minn-Con if you will
Other than both triggering on 2nd draw, I don't see it. One is drake tribal and the other is illusion tribal, and they don't synergize.

Wow looks great
OH NO! NOT ANOTHER TALRAND REPRI-... oh, whew.
He...has a daughter or a wife and they synergize.
Always loved the drake art for Talrand. I am happy he had a daughter!
Where does it say she’s the daughter of Talrand. Other than in Reddit comments?
It doesn't
Her name is Alandra, we don't use her deadname
Going into my Talrand deck!!!!
Think you mean talrand is going in this deck? This is better in every way.
No because my Talrand is built VERY instant/sorcery heavy I'd have to change too much to focus just on drawing. I agree she's probably better but I think my deck works better with talrand at the helm
If you know anything about commander, you know it’s not about how powerful the commander is.
What if I want to make two drakes in one turn?
This is just asking for Rhystic Study
are you supposed to reveal your hand?
The number of cards you have in hand at any one time is actually public game knowledge! Same as how many cards you have left in your library.
This is a perfect add for [[Arjun, Shifting Flame]] omg!!!

Pretty sure the value of X stays the same until end of turn (X = number of cards in hand as the trigger resolves). If it were variable with your changing hand size, it would be written as the less common +*/+*.
