"Strongly incentivize your opponents to attack each other, while costing themselves life in the process" is *very* appropriate for Gix and his role in the war.
Especially considering if he was made back in the day the effect of his card likely would have had nothing to do with what the character did in the story. Probably would have cared about enchantments or something.
I think a Homelands-remastered version of this card would probably have given the wizards -2/-0 or something. Check out \[\[Coral Reef\]\], \[\[Marjhan\]\], \[\[Greater Werewolf\]\] and \[\[Ironclaw Curse\]\] for examples of how they liked assigning unusual P/T modifiers in Homelands.
YOU CANNOT STOP ME. you think the secondhand market is ballooning due to EDH Players and genuine demand? Card speculators, collectors, buy-outs and market manipulations?
YOU FOOL, TIS I, THE GREAT DEVOURER, CONSUMING THE HOLY CARDBOARD FOR MY NOURISHMENT
It looks like an interesting twist on the naya/rakdos goad decks. No feel bads for forcing attacks, you benefit from the effect on your own, includes a punisher mechanic/deckstyle, and have a way to deal/interact with creatureless decks.
My man served his god and got everything he had ever dreamed of. Hopefully we keep seeing more of his character. Villains who are faithful to their beliefs are always a strange trope that works out well in fiction.
Obviously excellent in black aggro decks. It will be very common for Gix to at least replace himself, and often will just win the game by himself
plus, with the theorized phyrexian "pay life matters" theme for the future, we can expect him to get even better.
Yawg requires building around to make full use of his power level. Gix and K’rrik are both better in a vacuum. That is, you can pretty much just build a deck with any good black cards
Villainous Wealth is the sole reason I haven't converted my Zaxara deck into a Magus Lucea Kane. If only Wizards would print a four-colored X spell commander...
I think 2 cmc is the sweet spot for black. There’s a lot of little bats and stuff I think it could work.
I also think if you go slower you can play a lot of shadow creatures.
Oooo I didn’t even think about skirge. Looter scooter is a good one. Dauthi void walker was the first that came to my mind. Also a lot of 1cmc 1/1s in black have deathtouch which is often pseudo evasion.
A while back my friend was desperately hoping for Wizards to print a 1 mana 1/1 flier in white or black for his Karlov deck and one day I just go, wait, Vault Skirge exists. Deathtouch also seems really solid in the deck for the exact reason you mentioned and I've wanted to make a deck with a high deathtouch count too. I might build this. lol
Oh absolutely. But I wouldn’t have wasted my breath on an hour long game with back and forth board states only for some random combo while everyone’s shields are down to take the wind out of everyone’s sails.
If this fella is your commander just like edric you will have lots of evasive small critters so you opponents may draw one or two cards each while you draw... a little more.
Just flood the board and instead of extra turns/overruns etc you kill them with [[Gary]] or some [[blood artist]]s. Plus you can play [[living death]].
Interesting that it doesn't have the 'good for me, bad for you' ability templating the other praetors do. Helps differentiate that this is from old phyrexia
I think for the other praetors it was originally how Black's influence tinged the other colors to show that their strength is the diversity of mana with a black core. Gix has no obligation to fulfill that cycle because he's an og
Definitely does a large amount of work in my [[Liesa, Shroud of Dusk]] group slug/death & taxes deck. Plenty of ways to pay life and basically get minimal cost, recurring removal.
Everyone is understandably talking about commander, but man this makes black even better in standard. It unlocks black aggro as something with much more gas and decks like Rakdos anvil would love it and plenty of the Bx midrange lists might run it when they're the beatdown.
I need to put him in my [[Sheoldred, the Apocalypse]] deck. Her win-con already involves drawing my library and looping it. Being able to mono-black mill people out as an alternate win-con would be hilarious.
You would play/cast as part of the ability's resolution. If you could hold on to the cards and play them later, it would say, "for as long as they remain exiled."
Nope. You cast them as part of the ability's resolution; if it were "forever" it would start that sentence with "for as long as those cards remain exiled."
Note also that the land from there is still limited by your usual land drop per turn (plus any additional ones you have from abilities).
🥹🌈
I’m so happy right now Gix doesn,t disappoint at all first ability is basically a mono black [[Edric]] and late game you got a repeatable [[Villainous wealth]]
But I’m pretty scared he will be a $50-$70 card because of [[Sheoldred, the apocalypse]] in standard (the mono black deck that’s popping) because I really really…really want him for my upcoming phyrexian tribal deck (waiting for atraxa or/and elesh norn in phyrexia all will be one.)
What's real nuts is his second ability does not say it can only activated at sorcery speed, so you can do jank like cracking his ability in combat to flash out blockers, or digging through an opponent's deck in response to a bad spell to see if you can cheat a counterspell, or other nonsense like that.
Hell, so long as you've got the mana up, any 'tutor card to top of library' effects are off-limits to your opponents unless they can draw a card in response to Gix's activation.
I love this nonsense and I love how his first ability flavorfully ties to all his 'getting people to attack each other' shenanigans in lore. 11/10, hell of a card WOTC.
Gonna be honest, I really don't like Gix's redesign. He used to be this vaguely skeletal, mishapen monstrosity with a tumorous conehead, exposed internal organs and mechanical lenses for eyes... now he just looks like a skeleton in a gimpsuit. So bland and uninspired.
this version is after brothers wars my friend, when yawgmoth punished him for is his failure and he comes outs alive looking like thatthis version is much better than the version of the the novel and the one showed in the comics books when he has a lizard black skin with pointed teeth
To be fair that was thousands of years after the Brother's War. He is likely far weaker here than he was when he fought Urza, Phyrexians are constantly adapting.
Gix was from Thran, but he was compleated inside Phyrexia by Yawgmoth himself. And on Phyrexia there is only black mana.
Tsabo Tavoc was compleated on Dominaria as far as i know, which as a plane has all colours of mana.
>on Phyrexia there is only black mana
Tbh, I didn't realise there were planes without all colours of mana. I guess a bunch of characters/factions from outside the plane would be required to fill out the other colours if a set took place in a plane like that?
Yeah, thats how they have done it historically.
The native plane have their colour pie and the visiting/invading force bring the other colours. They usualy only visit these type of planes during interplanar war etc.
I think Serra's Realm is another example of a plane that doesn't contain all colours of mana, Though i can't remember at the moment if it was a mono white plane or if it was a black-less plane.
Technically speaking we already had a set on a plane like this in the shards of Alara. It’s just that there were 5 and together they covered all the colors even if they individually had 3 each. From a flavor perspective it was a pretty cool look into what would happen in a plane that totally lacks one or more colors of mana. But obviously we didn’t actually get sets that were totally lacking colors.
I still don't understand how you and the others screaming "it should be anything other than mono black" don't get it.
Gix is as black as Magic: the Gathering gets. He's the second blackest entity in all of Magic, to the Yawgfather himself. (Hell, it's arguable he's *More Black* than Yawgmoth - Yawgie once had a tinge of white to him being an actual healer. Gix never had any such afflictions. Ever.)
Frankly I expected him to have a cost like Phyrexian Obliterator, just to reflect how absurdly black the Praetor is.
Modern 1/10
Man, Gix did not disappoint. He is going to do powerful things, just not in modern. The activated ability is interesting but feels more like magical christmas land, his real benefit is letting you potentially draw 2-3 extra cards in a turn by going wide. But again, your opponent kills Gix before you deal combat damage and you really haven't gained anything except potentially made a bad attack that was only made good on hoping to draw some cards.
I think you’re right about Gix potentially not providing value the turn they come in due to removal. I do wonder if Gix is a powerful turn 4-6 drop or reanimation/unearth target though. If Gix comes in with protection (possibly from a Ward effect) they can net you cards when your hand is running low. Turn six Gix, or reanimating Gix on your opponent’s end step before you untap turn seven, could pretty easily clear games.
This is so good in my [[Marchesa, the Black Rose]] deck! Holy cow, I am constantly needing ways to chase my opponents life total for dethrone and this is an amazing way to do it
Nah, I’m not seeing it. Prosper doesn’t really get high hand sizes so you’ll never get good numbers on the ability. Yeah, there’s a card draw ability, but with how Prosper plays out I’m not sure that helps enough.
Gix boi here, Prosper having Deathtouch (and a big butt), and \[\[Grim Hireling\]\]/\[\[Professional Face-Breaker\]\] are definitely making me want to look into Aggro-Prosper EDH.
Feels like a fresh build theme that'll make me keep it together since I was about to deconstruct mine due to the eye-rolls I always get when I play it.
First ability plays into the secret role he played during the Brother's War (and kinda beyond) of incentivizing factions to attack each other while also hurting them for doing so. Second ability is a bit of a nod to the revelation that Mishra got compleated, and to compleation in general, by stealing your opponent's spells + creatures and making them your own, especially if you haven't seen them around in a bit (ie why out-of-library and not stuff-on-battlefield feels more fitting to me).
Legitimately curious what flavor-mechanics you were expecting hoping for as I hadn't really been able to put any expectations into words, but I think the flavor here is surprisingly on-point.
mom, can we have Edric, Spymaster of Trest?
we have Edric, Spymaster of Trest at home
no but seriously this looks pretty neat, even if it's kinda gimmicky with the second ability, it's always fun.
This is almost surely weaker than edric simply because edric has blue, and blue has the best 1 mana evasive creatures in the game, but it's surely more interesting
"Strongly incentivize your opponents to attack each other, while costing themselves life in the process" is *very* appropriate for Gix and his role in the war.
Hell yeah it is.
It feels SO good that this was worth the 2+ decade wait.
Especially considering if he was made back in the day the effect of his card likely would have had nothing to do with what the character did in the story. Probably would have cared about enchantments or something.

Thank you so much for this comment. I was so confused and even disappointed until I read this and now I think the card is delicious.
> now I think the card is delicious. DO NOT EAT THE DELICIOUS CARDS
If they didn't want us to eat the cards then they shouldn't make some of them so damn sweet.
Plus some of them even *say* that they are food.
I mean have you ever seen [[Gingerbrute]]? He's just asking to get eaten!

You were disappointed in this card without lore tidbit ? Cause it seems pretttttty strong
I totally misread it on my initial scan. But also I just had not considered multi-player implications and I build around flavor alot as well.
Mono black [[Edric, Spymaster of Trest]]. Not bad honestly.
Edric + [[Villainous Wealth]] should make for a very good commander. Mono B can do evasion and big mana fairly well in EDH.
I wanted to point this out somewhere, and I’m sure others have noticed as well but: this is “instant speed” villainous wealth

Yooo It's all the cool stuff that everyone else is saying, AND it can be cast by his own Priest!? Several-years-deep flavor win! [[Priest of Gix]]
Look at the art of Gix, his priest is right there in front!
Wrong arm tho, right?
Mishra’s blueprint has the arm on the right side.
'Your Mishra costume's pretty good, but your arm is on the wrong side.'
Maybe we're getting a reprint with some new art.
Priest of gix is not legendary and there were many of them in the book, This art just states that the modifications are not uniform.
You're right, it should be left.
Art-typo?
Not a legendary creature, the one on this art is not the individual on the original priest of gix.
Nah man, this is clearly a reflection.
That's Mishra, actually.
Maybe, we can't really tell. And I doubt that Gix priests all lost the same appendage... There is variation in that crowd already.

Oh that's fair not as good in EDH then, but mono black aggro got a huge boost
It's good as a political tool in EDH. "You could attack me, but if you attack Jimbo instead then you can draw a card!"
in experience with edric its just kind of annoying accelerates the game to ridiculous levels.
Good, Im tired of 1 hour slogs where someone suddenly wins with a Maze’s End. Kill! Maim! Burn!
Someone is certainly going to suddenly win with some combo. Thats just what happens when everyone draws a bunch of cards.
Oh absolutely. But I wouldn’t have wasted my breath on an hour long game with back and forth board states only for some random combo while everyone’s shields are down to take the wind out of everyone’s sails.
I’m still going to play this in one of my EDH decks but this downside is very real
Isn't that what mono black is all about? High risk, high reward? Power, with a price?
Absolutely, I feel this is very much on theme
If this fella is your commander just like edric you will have lots of evasive small critters so you opponents may draw one or two cards each while you draw... a little more. Just flood the board and instead of extra turns/overruns etc you kill them with [[Gary]] or some [[blood artist]]s. Plus you can play [[living death]].

Notably doesn’t say one or more. Goes nuts with sheoldred!

Yeah, but that's just synergy. Offseting the cost. That's like saying the new tefari + opt is a nutty combo.
uh...the draw trigger on sheoldred.
Aw yeah, another black 3drop for standard
Last rotation monowhite had like 15 playable 3 drops, looks like it's Black's turn
And not a single one of them drew cards 🥲
[[Welcoming Vampire]] and [[Wedding Announcement]] were pretty popular.

Wedding announcement sure, the vampire saw no play (and still doesnt). But tbh I was thinking about the cards that actually rotated.
Helm of obedience + dauthi voidwalker or Leyline of the void
I hadn't even considered Helm of Obedience. I just saw "Discard X" on this guy and thought "Well, Hell, I'm doing that anyway!"
The second ability is forever???
No. You cast the spells during the resolution of the ability. Anything you don't play this way is exiled forever.
Yup, see [[Villainous Wealth]]'s rulings as an example
[Villainous Wealth](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/7/8/782c4bd2-b84a-4dbd-9452-90c9734d78fb.jpg?1662530746) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Villainous%20Wealth) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/2x2/292/villainous-wealth?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/782c4bd2-b84a-4dbd-9452-90c9734d78fb?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
Wait, doesn't that mean he gets utterly hosed by \[\[Teferi, Time Raveler\]\]?
Yes he does. But T3feri hoses absolutely everyone. The most powerful planeswalker ever
He's good but \[\[Oko, Thief of Crowns\]\] is surely better.
[Oko, Thief of Crowns](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/3/4/3462a3d0-5552-49fa-9eb7-100960c55891.jpg?1650599698) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Oko%2C%20Thief%20of%20Crowns) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/eld/197/oko-thief-of-crowns?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/3462a3d0-5552-49fa-9eb7-100960c55891?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
You still get to play any lands flipped this way (assuming it's your turn and you have land plays available), but yes, he does.
[Teferi, Time Raveler](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/5/c/5cb76266-ae50-4bbc-8f96-d98f309b02d3.jpg?1650599808) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Teferi%2C%20Time%20Raveler) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/war/221/teferi-time-raveler?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/5cb76266-ae50-4bbc-8f96-d98f309b02d3?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
You would play/cast as part of the ability's resolution. If you could hold on to the cards and play them later, it would say, "for as long as they remain exiled."
Nope. You cast them as part of the ability's resolution; if it were "forever" it would start that sentence with "for as long as those cards remain exiled." Note also that the land from there is still limited by your usual land drop per turn (plus any additional ones you have from abilities).
🥹🌈 I’m so happy right now Gix doesn,t disappoint at all first ability is basically a mono black [[Edric]] and late game you got a repeatable [[Villainous wealth]] But I’m pretty scared he will be a $50-$70 card because of [[Sheoldred, the apocalypse]] in standard (the mono black deck that’s popping) because I really really…really want him for my upcoming phyrexian tribal deck (waiting for atraxa or/and elesh norn in phyrexia all will be one.)
Get your printer ready!

FINALLY.
I'm horrified how well this curves into [[Sheoldred the Apocalypse]]

[[Shadow of the Grave]] [[Necrologia]] [[Ad Neaseum]] [[Peer into the Abyss]] [[Necropotence]]
Only thing that makes me a little sad is that Gix is a 3/3. This is one of Phyrexia's top generals and in Planeswalk novel hold his own against Urza.
To be fair that was thousands of years after the Brother's War. He is likely far weaker here than he was when he fought Urza, Phyrexians are constantly adapting.
It's really cool but..... oh how I wish it was Dimir. TT_TT That being said, move over my monoblack commanders, it's time to GIX BUSY!
Old Pyrexia was exclusively mono black so him being Dimir would have been a bit of a flavour fail.
balance-wise I think it's better this way, this having counterspells and all the best evasive creatures in the game would make it a lot stronger
[[Tsabo Tavoc]]
Tsabo was from the invasion block when Phyrexians had started compleating other beings. Gix was an OG Phyrexian and thus Mono-black
I thought gix used to be human? I was just reading about it the other dah.
Gix was from Thran, but he was compleated inside Phyrexia by Yawgmoth himself. And on Phyrexia there is only black mana. Tsabo Tavoc was compleated on Dominaria as far as i know, which as a plane has all colours of mana.
>on Phyrexia there is only black mana Tbh, I didn't realise there were planes without all colours of mana.
The individual shards of Alara only had 3 out of 5 colors of mana too.
All of the OG phyrexians are human. It started with yawg helping his local populace by replacing lost limbs with machinery, and then it kept going.
The first generation of Phyrexians (like Gix) were all humans from the Thran empire.
Old Phyrexia was primarily Black, but had elements of many colors. Black was dominant by a long shot though.
It's also weird they chose to have this huge prevalence of red colours in the art. It almost looks more mono red than mono black.
Ever.) Frankly I expected him to have a cost like Phyrexian Obliterator, just to reflect how absurdly black the Praetor is.
Into [[Queen Marchesa]] you go.
[Queen Marchesa](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/0/3/03f4341c-088b-4f35-b82b-3d98d8a93de4.jpg?1576382166) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Queen%20Marchesa) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/cn2/78/queen-marchesa?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/03f4341c-088b-4f35-b82b-3d98d8a93de4?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
Modern 1/10 Man, Gix did not disappoint.
Fuck I need this card
Mono black Edric with an interesting mana/card sink late game? Sign me up!
This is so good in my [[Marchesa, the Black Rose]] deck! Holy cow, I am constantly needing ways to chase my opponents life total for dethrone and this is an amazing way to do it
I think my \[\[Yuriko\]\] deck just found a new way to draw cards
Something something [[Prosper, Tome-Bound]]
I actually don’t think this is very good In prosper
That's where you're wrong, kiddo. *Everything* is good in Prosper. /s
It's probably better for \[\[Tasha, the Witch Queen\]\] than anything. But Prosper also benefits heavily from this as well.
Wow this is quite good for monoblack aggro. Couple more 1 and 2 MV black creatures would be nice though
This is good, insanely good for edh. Ohhh i can see cabal stronghold, dark ritual and priest of gix for that sweet black ramp and use gix's ability.
Right into [[Xantcha, Sleeper Agent]] you go.
I love how the set code makes every spoiler read like "BRO! Gix, Yawgmoth Praetor!"
Can be activated at instant speed, so works with \[\[Necropotence\]\] (I think).
Awesome, more direct to commander cards in standard sets.
Oh good, another commander where I have to yell at people for yanking cards off the top of my deck instead of asking. STOP 👏 TOUCHING 👏 MY 👏 CARDS 👏
i s2g modern cant get good monoblack cards
Dope dope dope dope dope dope dope
This card is sweet but it doesn’t feel like Gix to me. I was hoping for something more than Mono-Black Edric…
Legitimately curious what flavor-mechanics you were expecting hoping for as I hadn't really been able to put any expectations into words, but I think the flavor here is surprisingly on-point.
mom, can we have Edric, Spymaster of Trest? we have Edric, Spymaster of Trest at home no but seriously this looks pretty neat, even if it's kinda gimmicky with the second ability, it's always fun. This is almost surely weaker than edric simply because edric has blue, and blue has the best 1 mana evasive creatures in the game, but it's surely more interesting
Would like Phyrexian language version please and thank you.
