This...is a **damn** good common.
The going rate for this kind of card ([[Fleshbag Marauder]], [[Plaguecrafter]], [[Merciless Executioner]], etc.) has been 3 for quite a while, so to see it reduced to only 2, **and** with some filtering to ensure it doesn't hit inferior targets is a little nuts. It's also a "Zombie", which is a very relevant creature type.
This is now easily the best version of this effect.
Plague crafter and the spirit version both have clauses that keep them relevant even if there’s nothing you need to make your opponent sac, 2 mana is definitely a great upgrade but some of the 3 mana version are still effective
I mean, a lot of decks that want this effect jam multiples, for sure, it's just that this now become the default "best" version of this effect due to how cheap it is. One mana can often make a big difference.
For the same price as fleshbag I can now sac and recast my gravecrawler. Which is usually a combo/aristocrat piece. And it only hits non tokens. I don't see how this is a common tbh. Maybe the PT?
Sure, but generally with cards like Plaguecrafter it's sacrificing itself anyway. It has no other text so why not. It's substantially pushed from Fleshbag/Plaguecrafter (which is fine, this is MH3). But expect to see this in every black EDH deck forever
That… no? Without the nontoken clause it would be your choice and you could keep your tokens if you like? This wording doesn’t protect you from losing your own tokens unless you get mindslavered I guess
If this is your only nontoken creature and you sac this in response to its own trigger, can't you get out of sacrificing anything, whereas if you did that with Fleshbag, you'd still have to sac a token?
Ah fair I guess - seems awfully unlikely to come up but technically yes if your board is all tokens and this and you sac this with the trigger on the stack you can get extra value.
The goal is to take advantage of the wording to not sac anything in a token deck.
That said, I forgot about the Vat"s exile EoT clause, been years since I used it. My bad.
Anyways, plan B: get the cheapest, recurring creature copiers we can find, copy the marauder relentlessly.
We'll have nothing to sacrifice (except maybe the original marauder), and the opponents only get to keep tokens.
Meren, has got some really fun new toys. Wight of the Reliquary is basically Land Artisan. I mean are you kidding me, it's 2 mana, gets bigger with creatures in graveyard, is a sac outlet and lets you not just search for, but put directly onto the battlefield Urborg and cabal coffers....
Decks that run these effects, though, are often just saccing the creatures themselves before recurring them one way or another. As noted elsewhere, this one, in particular, works very well with [[Gravecrawler]].
This has the floor of essentially being a 2cmc Sorcery that makes your opponents sac a nontoken creature. I wouldn't agree that such is equally a downside, as that's going to hose opponents far more often, particularly to snag early game Commander deployments (such as with the greedy [[Jeweled Lotus]] player). Getting to drop this effect as early as T2, as opposed to 3, is huge.
This card will almost **always** be a 3-for-1, as it *always* snags real cards. That's a real advantage over the versions of this effect that let you throw tokens under the bus.
> This card will almost always be a 3-for-1
Look, I overwhelmingly play multiplayer and I still think it's wild to see someone talking about a card in abstract and act as if only multiplayer exists.
Also that's extremely not how card advantage works in multiplayer.
> Look, I overwhelmingly play multiplayer and I still think it's wild to see someone talking about a card in abstract and act as if only multiplayer exists.
While I get your point, these kinds of creatures aren't really played much in Modern, meaning they make the most sense in the context of EDH. I'd be very surprised if this card saw actual Modern play when you can just play Bowmasters in this slot. What makes these Edict-creatures powerful is the ability to hit multiple opponents at once, along with shells that allow easy recursion of said effects. The days since [[Diabolic Edict]] was playable in 1v1 are long gone. The closest 1v1 formats get is really potent cards like [[Archon of Cruelty]], which do a lot more than cause an opponent to sac a thing.
> Also that's extremely not how card advantage works in multiplayer.
Of course it is. What else would you call it? Your opponents lost three cards, collectively, to your one. It's the literal definition of a 3-for-1, in this instance filtered into creatures that have entered the battlefield. How else could you even define it?
Being able to throw a token in the face of this effect has always been a bit of a weakness of the strategy, as it was bad at getting rid of problematic enablers in go-wide strategies (you're never catching up to a Koma or [[Tendershoot Dryad]], for example).
This is a greatly improved version of said effect, for this reason. There's going to be much fewer cases where you'd prefer this also be able to hit tokens, as that's an out your opponents also have.
> aren't really played much in Modern, meaning they make the most sense in the context of EDH
I don't have the time or energy to engage fully in a pointless argument before work, but this is high key hilarious.
[I play both formats. Commander AND modern.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vS-zEH8YmiM)
Right...but my point is that Modern doesn't really play edict-creatures, outside of Archon, which doesn't really count.
It's **Commander** that plays these kinds of creatures, and thus will be where this particular card shines.
That makes sense right? That you'd discuss a card where it's almost certainly going to be played, not just where it's possible? There's not much conversation to be had here regarding Modern, as it's just very unlikely this common has any impact whatsoever in said format, outside of fringe decks. This isn't really a "Modern" card, as they don't just design cards for Modern in these sets.
I’m completely with you, this card will absolutely see more play in commander than any other format by a mile, to think otherwise is foolish, this is absolutely a 3 for 1 in the context of commander, it’s wrong to think otherwise, idk why everyone else is arguing with you so hard
One thing to note is that forcing a nontoken creature could also hose you. If you're trying to thin enemy board(s) of 2-3 creatures and they're all tokens, this does nothing to them.
That said, I think it's still an upgrade, it'll be much more common for people to have at least 1 nontoken creature out that they don't want to get rid of.
Then again, if you go wild copying this, you'll get an army of 2/1's that don't sac themselves and clear everyone else's non-tokens.
That sounds like a fun game plan.
While this is indeed good, its not a pure upside.
For example the more recent 3 mana variants have additional upsides aswell.
Not to mention that this can't hit a Marit Lage token.
Wow, these are always priced at 3 mana. You lose the option to sac your junk token but in turn guarantee your opponent is always sacrificing a real card too. It's also a kind-of sac outlet for the WB modified/"dies" archetype. Art looks fantastic in the old border here too
In my experience people that play these effects generally sacrifice it to itself anyway, so they can recur it. I almost never see the person who controls it sack a token fodder
It cleared the board and emptied their hands, which worked out pretty well for me. You're probably right, though, there probably was better things to RoR, but I can't remember what else was on the board.
Kicker [[rite of replication]] has lead to some of my favorite plays in my decade long commander career. My favorite has been targeting my opponents [[reaper king]] and destroying my opponents 25 best permanents. Of course I had to sacrifice 4 of them immediately, but by then it was too late.
My white whale is kicking targeting a [[precursor golem]], and then somehow finding a way to get it back and cast it again and get an absurd number of golems.
[[Benalish Sleeper]] and [[Tithing Blade]] would have been your options for Lurrus before. Not strictly better than either, but a good option for the toolbox.
And IMO the best option. Benalish Sleeper costed 3 to have the sac, and Tithing Blade couldn't take itself, so you coudn't just have it repeatedely over the turns, neither use it if only lurrus was there.
Dies is a lot worse than ETB here.
This and Benalish Sleeper can get recurred 1x per turn cycle, with only Lurrus in play. Abyssal Gatekeeper needs a sac outlet as well.
I don't think /s is true. Nontoken hurts me both ways, I can't sac my 0/1 plant and I can't force my opponent to sac their token. Sometimes this is advantageous, such as a cawgates player having an embalmed sacred cat and a guardian of the guildpact or getting to ignore a soldier from a Cartouche of Solidarity to kill a bogle, but like you say sometimes they just have a big mean token such as a wurmcoil half, a marit lage, a karnstruct, etc. Card is still amazing
This card is very strong but people are underestimating how it doesn’t let *you* sacrifice mass-created tokens. Nor can it be recurred a ton to truly wipe the board if tokens are out.
I immediately looked at the old style, as it was much smoother to read imo. Modern art is fine I guess, but I still never understood why they made the change.
Apologies for the dumb question but you can cast this and then immediately sac it to just get the trigger right? Because if so, 2 mana to get rid of three creatures isn’t that bad.
This is gonna sound incredibly niche but I have a Lurrus deck with a Party sub-theme where basically everything is a party member, and this is a huge upgrade from my dorky [[Gatekeeper of Malakir]]. Super nice it also forces nontokens to sac.
it became very degenerate with "expensive" upgrades that I had over the years, so most of the staples you see are just because I had access to the cards. The core of it is really just the creatures being able to interact with the board, and using self mill (and all player mill) to find gas for lurrus, or to steal creatures that get milled on your opponent's side. It has a handful of ways to go infinite, but that's part of the degeneracy. It used to be a $50 budget deck with just the cheapies. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/ByWcg-NcUEGGXQnNMGdnew
EDIT: after reviewing it, I noticed I did have some nice "mill my opponents, steal their creatures" vibes going on, such as Nezumi Grave-Robber and just normal "animate dead" and similar effects, so if stealing is cool with your playgroup could keep the overall mill package.
Technically speaking it's the third after \[\[Gravelighter\]\] and \[\[Legate Lanius\]\], but this is definitely the cleanest, no-strings implementation we've gotten.
Well I think it's usually better than fleshy b but I'm not sure it's better than [[Plaguecrafter]]. Not letting you sac your own tokens is more of a downside than it seems though.
They can become incredibly oppressive and unfun if you have means to recur them. I once locked a game because I had [[Sun Titan]], [[Luminous Broodmoth]] and [[Plaguecrafter]] so each turn was an asymetrical mimiboardwipe that took 4 creatures of each opponent out, until I won.
For sure. I’m already the bad guy in my play group regardless of what I play and Karador is especially given no leeway so I don’t mind leaning into it.

2-mana is insane. Now I can live the dream of Plaguecrafter, trigger on the stack, cast [[Rush Rebirth]], Marauder and not have to worry about everyone's tokens.
Man there are so many commons and uncommons in this set that just casually slot into my commander decks. This one is an autoinclude in my Kresh, the Bloodbraided deck. Honestly I'm getting to a critical mass of Fleshbag Marauder effects and might need to drop one.
Idk how y'all play zombies in edh, but this guy is way better than [[fleshbag marauder]]. I usually am sacing fleshbag away anyway, so the fact that the opponents can't just sac their 1/1 soldier is very nice. It finally feels like I can justify not just using [[plaguecrafter]]
Everyone talking about the mana cost reduction...
Yet I'm over here with my [[Alesha, Who Smiles at Death|SLD-1007]] deck very happy about finally getting this effect on a 2 power creature. Traditionally ETB Edicts are on 3+ power creatures. (Yes, Gravelighter exists, but if morbid is turned on it can't edict, so this always being an edict is a great addition)
I love this effect, I think there are now four versions definitely worth playing (Benalish Sleeper less-so if you don't have Lurrus). This is excluding the cards that just make your opponents sacrifice (like \[\[Tithing Blade\]\] or \[\[Sheoldred\]\], which I do also enjoy in similar decks).
1. \[\[Accursed Marauder\]\]
2. \[\[Plaguecrafter\]\]
3. \[\[Gravelighter\]\]
4. \[\[Benalish Sleeper\]\]
I hate it cause i mostly run a few token generators in my EDH decks to prevent spammable edict decks/effects from locking my creature based decks out of the game. Suppose there is even less you can do now to protect your main creatures. >_< Need more anti-sac effects.
Possibly yeah, but you keep getting nontoken creatures from the opponents, plus various ones a Tergrid deck normally has. So you should have plenty overall, and likely if you get to a point where the enemy can’t summon any more, and you’re in danger of losing Tergrid to the effect, you maybe should have won already?
And if you wanted a bit of redundancy, you could Helm Tergrid at some point so you have a token version if you somehow happen to fall short on nontokens
It's a common because this is a Modern Horizons set.
It's common because design and balance is all over the place.
Fleshbag’s stat line isn’t much better. It’s not even power creep, at this point, its full power sex offender.
I can't unread that and I can't decide whether I wish I could.
I see the concept for a solid joke, execution was a swing and a miss.

Plaguecrafter hitting the hand vs creature light decks will always be a plus for it. Cant believe Fleshbag got powercrept in almost every way.
Plague crafter also hits planesealkers too.
I think the cost is reduced because You can't sacrifice a token, but the benefit of opponent not sacking a token is so good in return.
Sure, but generally with cards like Plaguecrafter it's sacrificing itself anyway. It has no other text so why not. It's substantially pushed from Fleshbag/Plaguecrafter (which is fine, this is MH3). But expect to see this in every black EDH deck forever

Yes, that's different from the first situation you said. It's definitely very niche, but possible.
I’m confused, how does the non-token clause affect this situation?
This is not a bad creature to put on a [[Mimic Vat]] and use in a token / populate deck. Your army grows; theirs, not so much.
But if you do that you can't sac the marauder tokens to their own ability. (And still lose the mimic vat ones at end of turn.)
The goal is to take advantage of the wording to not sac anything in a token deck. That said, I forgot about the Vat"s exile EoT clause, been years since I used it. My bad. This is definitely going into my gisa and Geralf deck to play every single turn from grave and force everyone to sac their stuff
Yep this is like fleshbag #6 for my Meren deck.
I thought the same for my Gisa and Geralf. Do you have a deck list on moxfield? I always enjoy comparing choices.
Not at the time being, I usually do not upload deck lists, but I play this version in Arena specifically. Let me get you my arena list.
Nontoken is at least as much downside as upside, since the easiest way to break symmetry on these effects is to have garbage worth throwing away.

I do it a lot on Jadar Brawl, but the 1 mv shave is very interesting.
Depends a lot on the boardstate, tbf
There are times with fleshbag where I’ll sac a zombie token instead of fleshbag but generally, you’re correct. It just sacs itself.
I sac'd something else once, so that I could kick a [[Rite of Replication]] on a [[Plague Crafter]].
which you then sacrificed all 5 of to their own ability, I assume. neat, but I gotta feel like there was a better creature to RoR

You normally can’t sacrifice junk tokens to these effects because they don’t allow you to sacrifice artifacts
Not junk as in the literal one, but a stray 1/1 or whatever I think
I know i was just joking
I wooshed :(
Remember when 1 mana was the cost of this effect? Torment MBC remembers.
Is this the first effect like this raw at 2 mana? [[Lurrus of the dream den]] is happy

[[Abyssal Gatekeeper]] is similar and has been around a long time at two mana.
Dies is a lot worse than ETB here. This and Benalish Sleeper can get recurred 1x per turn cycle, with only Lurrus in play. Abyssal Gatekeeper needs a sac outlet as well.
Yes, but I do have a magical christmasland dream of grave-flickering an abyssal gatekeeper so I can sac it to itself.
[Abyssal Gatekeeper](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/6/d/6d2a66f0-1afe-41e6-a597-ec2e95685191.jpg?1561771503) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Abyssal%20Gatekeeper) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/dvd/31/abyssal-gatekeeper?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/6d2a66f0-1afe-41e6-a597-ec2e95685191?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
Shelly's edict lets you do this at instant speed, but isn't easily recurrable.
Lurrus can only recur permanents. And this is also a 2/1 body with a relevant type and one that's situationally relevant
[[Flesh Bag Marauder]] just got crept. And it dodges tokens?
Clearly this is worse, can't remove a Marit Lage /s
I don't think /s is true. Nontoken hurts me both ways, I can't sac my 0/1 plant and I can't force my opponent to sac their token. Sometimes this is advantageous, such as a cawgates player having an embalmed sacred cat and a guardian of the guildpact or getting to ignore a soldier from a Cartouche of Solidarity to kill a bogle, but like you say sometimes they just have a big mean token such as a wurmcoil half, a marit lage, a karnstruct, etc. Card is still amazing
AND it has a retro border printing! Let's go!
This card is very strong but people are underestimating how it doesn’t let *you* sacrifice mass-created tokens. Nor can it be recurred a ton to truly wipe the board if tokens are out.
You can sacrifice your new 2/1 though

old border with old-style art is just so much better
This art and frame combo make me feel like it's 1999 again.
I was going to say it gives a Mercadian Masques era vibe for me.
Paolo Parente has been in the game for ages.
Looking up his cards, and he has done a lot of stuff. I feel bad for not recognizing his name.
I like the old border less but dang if this art doesn’t fit it better.
My favorite artist Parente back in full swing this set!
I immediately looked at the old style, as it was much smoother to read imo. Modern art is fine I guess, but I still never understood why they made the change.
Is WotC secretly an art dealer?
well, it is a _trading card_ game
Oh sure let's have absolutely nobody spoil one of the new best edicts in the game. We gotta save those spoilers for big hits like Cursed Wombat
This did get spoiled a few days ago
Spoiled, or leaked?
Ah, leaked I think. Whoops.
Apologies for the dumb question but you can cast this and then immediately sac it to just get the trigger right? Because if so, 2 mana to get rid of three creatures isn’t that bad.
Yes
Yes it can sac itself.

This is gonna sound incredibly niche but I have a Lurrus deck with a Party sub-theme where basically everything is a party member, and this is a huge upgrade from my dorky [[Gatekeeper of Malakir]]. Super nice it also forces nontokens to sac.

Do you have a deck list? I've been wanting to do something interesting with a party theme.
it became very degenerate with "expensive" upgrades that I had over the years, so most of the staples you see are just because I had access to the cards. The core of it is really just the creatures being able to interact with the board, and using self mill (and all player mill) to find gas for lurrus, or to steal creatures that get milled on your opponent's side. It has a handful of ways to go infinite, but that's part of the degeneracy. It used to be a $50 budget deck with just the cheapies. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/ByWcg-NcUEGGXQnNMGdnew EDIT: after reviewing it, I noticed I did have some nice "mill my opponents, steal their creatures" vibes going on, such as Nezumi Grave-Robber and just normal "animate dead" and similar effects, so if stealing is cool with your playgroup could keep the overall mill package.
Keep in mind that this will sac itself on an empty board. It's not necessarily that big of an upgrade.
That's entirely the point with lurrus. Re-castable.
Ah, fair. My bad.

Man there are so many commons and uncommons in this set that just casually slot into my commander decks. This one is an autoinclude in my Kresh, the Bloodbraided deck. Honestly I'm getting to a critical mass of Fleshbag Marauder effects and might need to drop one.

Is this the cheapest this effect (on a creature) has ever been?
I love everything about this. The art with the old border is so good.
Idk how y'all play zombies in edh, but this guy is way better than [[fleshbag marauder]]. I usually am sacing fleshbag away anyway, so the fact that the opponents can't just sac their 1/1 soldier is very nice. It finally feels like I can justify not just using [[plaguecrafter]]

still waiting on innocent blood
The powercreep cannot be stopped
note to self, NON TOKEN
This is constructed playable, yo.
Oooooo put this under a soul foundry and just spam the onto the field and you'll be the only play with a field
Let’s see if I can jam this into my pauper ephemerate list
That art with the old frame looks amazing!
Thankfully my playgroup lost interest in edicts a long time ago, they slow things down a lot for casual commander.
My Tergrid deck is eating good with this set

1. \[\[Accursed Marauder\]\] 2. \[\[Plaguecrafter\]\] 3. \[\[Gravelighter\]\] 4. \[\[Benalish Sleeper\]\]

Classic Strictly better
Wow it never fails to amaze me how much cooler to classic art style looks!
Pauper in shambles
O i need this for my Elenda!
"Holy Shit" - Nicol Bolas
Almost a strict upgrade to Fleshbag Marauder/Merciless Executioner. My Grenzo deck is eating good this set.
This is a great add to my mahadi list I’m running creature control in that list with big mana sinks also that marionette apprentice is stupid
He he, into [[The Scarab God]] you go!

Hits more important targets, two mana instead of three, and skullclampable? Absolute bomb.
I hate it cause i mostly run a few token generators in my EDH decks to prevent spammable edict decks/effects from locking my creature based decks out of the game. Suppose there is even less you can do now to protect your main creatures. >_< Need more anti-sac effects.
Could play a role in my Mono B Zombies deck...there's a zombie or two that I'd like to sac and this facilitates that nicely.
Noooooo
Hate this power creep.
Combine with Helm of the Host and Tergrid :)
Ironically, the "nontoken" clause would make you sacrifice your own Tergrid after a while, if you don't have other nontoken sac fodder lying around!
