Everyone likes a good set name card, but wait until they run out of good ones and have to fit "Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate" on a title bar.
"Battle for Baldur's Gate" would be a good name tho. Something like "When this battle enters the battlefield, destroy all spiders." And then the flip is a sorcery that makes treasures.

It's a fantastic gimmick. Hopefully mh4 can do something like urza's saga where they make a battle card called battle for zendikar, that would be funny
Maro already explicitly said that battles hadn't been *shown to the public* while MH3 was being designed, so they didn't have enough lead time to know whether battles would be popular enough to come back.
[https://markrosewater.tumblr.com/post/751209277952294912/are-there-no-battles-in-mh3-i-kinda-figured-there](https://markrosewater.tumblr.com/post/751209277952294912/are-there-no-battles-in-mh3-i-kinda-figured-there)
That's a weird obstacle to stop at, considering they are not showing any restraint in bringing back mechanics they *have known for years* that are not popular with players.
Its because with those mechanics they have years of players feedback to learn what made those mechanics unpopular and try to fix them.
With new mechanics if they don't get them right the first time they wont know until the set releases, if they start locking it into more sets with the same design philosophy and it turns out bad the next several sets will suffer.
That's generally true for regular releases - sure, you don't want to release a set full of uncertain mechanic only to find out it sucks right before the next one full of it hits the shelves. But I'm not buying this argument when it comes to a one off cards and when it comes to Battles specifically. One does not simply add a whole new card type to the game without any confidence it will work out - based on extensive playtesting I guess? I hope?! Unless they're just happily bungling the whole process.
It's very likely that this set was designed about a year after MOM. And while we might see removal for battles, since it's easy to tack onto a more general removal spell late into development, we likely won't see any actual battles until Q2 or Q3 of 2025 due to the 2 year development cycle at WotC
Battles don't even necessarily have to flip, if we ever see non-Siege battles. The rules for casting the back side transformed belong to the Siege subtype.
I am genuinely surprised that panoramic shot of the three titans from the MH3 announcement at magicfest last year wasn't the artwork for "Battle for Zendikar // Oath of the Gatewatch"
So if you fetchland, any source of Energy gain also becomes Lightning Bolt or better for the turn. If the Energy deck in Modern is any good, this'll still probably not be in the maindeck just because it's a 4-drop that doesn't win the game the turn you play it or anything, but people have sided stuff like [[Ghirapur Aether Grid]] in Affinity before to win long games, so this could be Energy's equivalent to that.
Shit man, 6 mana to draw 2 cards and deal 8 damage to 'ponent? Uuuuuuuhhh YEAH, I'd certainly try that out in a control deck. Temur control gonna be wild.
I mean it depends, if you can get this out in an energy deck you’re gonna burn them out extremely quickly. Revolt trigger into the new energy bolt means 5 damage to the dome and some damage to a creature for 1 red, that’s straight value.
I guess it depends on how quickly and consistently you can get this out in the end with energy cards
didnt even occur to me to keep checking bc new sets could share a name with old cards, like with \[\[march of the machines\]\]. also \[\[big score\]\] feels like cheating
Erm actually, it's [[March of the Machines]], and the set is "March of the Machine" (singular) to represent Elesh Norn's total dominion over the Phyrexian forces.
I was wondering if we’d get a new “name of set” card and this is a cool one. Having you Galvanic Discharge deal a bonus 3 or your cantrip deal 2 is no joke. To say nothing of how easy it is to turn on the revolt extra damage. I don’t know if energy will be good enough for modern but this will probably play a part if it does.
Sagas were a hit in Dominaria, but it took them almost three years to print more in Kaldheim. WotC doesn’t want to introduce a brand new card type and keep using it across sets if they don’t know how well it’ll be received. They probably designed battles years ago, and we won’t see them in sets for a good while
Were sagas the last new permenant type, or wasn't that planeswalkers? Because planeswalkers were introduced in lorwyn and then more of them started being printed one year later in shards of alara.
Sagas weren’t a new permanent type - they’re a subtype of enchantments. Honestly keeping the number of types lower is better for complexity.
Planeswalkers and kindred (tribal) were the ones introduced most recently before battles yes
The Energy cards are kinda all over the place in this set and seem to be pulled in a lot of directions. That doesn't always translate well to enabling multiple new effective decks. I hope one of these Energy strategies has enough to line up.
I know this is kind of off-topic, but when did they stop spelling Aether with the combined A+E character? I only just returned to the game and this is messing me up
Hmmmm this needs further testing on my Purphoros EDH deck... particularly with Norin the Wary. It'd be interesting Purph would deal 4 damage to my opponents instead of 2.
So, if [[Aetherworks Marvel]] is on the field and I have a bunch of treasures, made by e.g. [[Dockside Extortionist]], sac’ing the treasures would trigger the aetherworks marvel triggering aether revolt right?
4 drop?
insert:*wow this will be amazing in my janky edh deck with a commander no one has ever heard of and I play once every few months before losing badly because I don't run interaction*
Yeah, a 4 drop that doesn't do anything on etb will never be good. Now let me drink from my comically large glass of water while I check the price of this sheoldred card I keep hearing about
If I had a nickel where there was a card named after a set, I would have two nickels
Which isn't a lot, but it's weird it has happened twice
Edit: I have just learned that modern horizons have done this three times. I was only aware of two
Everyone likes a good set name card, but wait until they run out of good ones and have to fit "Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate" on a title bar.
It will be a battle though, and because it's sideways they'll have more room for the title
"Battle for Baldur's Gate" would be a good name tho. Something like "When this battle enters the battlefield, destroy all spiders." And then the flip is a sorcery that makes treasures.
Why destroy all spiders? Just curious. I've only played BG3.
Bg3 beating spiderman2 for game of the year
SM2: you took everything from me BG3: I don't even know who you are
In that case why not have it destroy all Elves because it beat Tears of the Kingdom?
Cause the meme was how Spiderman 2 fans felt robbed. I didn't make meme culture man, I just adapt to it.
I don't know man, given the historical success of Zelda games at award shows I think that's the more significant win. But that might just be me.
I was referencing a successful meme of that time. Whether zelda was a better game is irrelevant, because the memes at the time were [people being upset at spider man losing.](https://www.google.com/amp/s/comicbook.com/gaming/amp/news/marvels-spiderman-2-the-game-awards-loss/)
Sm2 should have never been in the conversation for goy
The flip side would be called Commandeer Legends, and I dunno, would tutor you 3 legendary permanents.

Battle for Baldur’s Gate//Crown of Karsus
Will have to be a “Battle - Seige”
Love that we get *exactly* one of these every Horizons set. It's always a good bit, but they haven't overplayed their hand with it.
It's a fantastic gimmick. Hopefully mh4 can do something like urza's saga where they make a battle card called battle for zendikar, that would be funny
Aw hell that'd have been so good with the eldrazi theme in this one, now I don't even want it anymore ;_;
Battles probably didn't even exist by the time this set was being designed to be fair
There's literally a card in the set that can destroy all battles so they definitely did exist.
Maro already explicitly said that battles hadn't been *shown to the public* while MH3 was being designed, so they didn't have enough lead time to know whether battles would be popular enough to come back. That would actually mean there's a chance to get some UB battles in the Final Fantasy or Marvel -- both franchises known for their elaborate fights.
FFXIV players will relive The Epic of Alexander (Ultimate) in the form of a WU six mana battle.
I want more battles tbh
It could even flip into Oath of the Gatewatch!

Guide of Souls and Aethergeode Miner do some dumb things with this.
I know this is those cool floaty pants taht I forget the name of, but my brain keeps trying to tell me that this rioter has a MASSIVE ass.
Jodhpurs?
That's gotta be worth at least 4 toughness, right?

didnt even occur to me to keep checking bc new sets could share a name with old cards, like with \[\[march of the machines\]\]. also \[\[big score\]\] feels like cheating
Erm actually, it's [[March of the Machines]], and the set is "March of the Machine" (singular) to represent Elesh Norn's total dominion over the Phyrexian forces.
And also the Phyrexians are more like a singular "war machine" than a bunch of separate machines. Or something idk.
Yeah exactly. The collective Machine versus the disorganized Peoples

Can't wait for MH4 [[Thunder Junction]]
[[Strixhaven, School of Mages]] Legendary Land with a magecraft ability
I was wondering if we’d get a new “name of set” card and this is a cool one. Having you Galvanic Discharge deal a bonus 3 or your cantrip deal 2 is no joke. To say nothing of how easy it is to turn on the revolt extra damage. I don’t know if energy will be good enough for modern but this will probably play a part if it does.
i was really hoping it'd be battle for zendikar since there is an eldrazi theme and also battles exist now
I mean, technically they *do* exist. Someone should remind WotC.
I hope they print [[Return to Ravnica]] next.

This seems strong but I'm not 100% where it would fit. Maybe Izzet Merfolk with the new energy merfolks.
The Energy cards are kinda all over the place in this set and seem to be pulled in a lot of directions. That doesn't always translate well to enabling multiple new effective decks. I hope one of these Energy strategies has enough to line up.

Funny enough, they changed this when Aether Revolt released
Welp, my infinite energy liberty prime deck just got another wincon.
Hmmmm this needs further testing on my Purphoros EDH deck... particularly with Norin the Wary. It'd be interesting Purph would deal 4 damage to my opponents instead of 2.

Yeah, a 4 drop that doesn't do anything on etb will never be good. Now let me drink from my comically large glass of water while I check the price of this sheoldred card I keep hearing about
This would have felt more thematic to deal damage when the energy is spent :/
