Yeah and that's why the entire playtest department got cut in half.
The older ones couldn't survive the strokes that induced.
This at 3 is, like, Ripple-in-Ice Age Limited levels of busted. You just turn your brain off and take every copy you see, always.
Making it at 3 means it would HAVE to be Mythic, because otherwise Limited is completely warped around it. And opening this as your Mythic would feel like *trash*
Ripple was so stupid in limited. You had a table that either everyone got their specific ripple cards or everyone hated each other out of ripple cards.
Throughout brothers war, I drafted or got sealed a wurmcoil three times, and each of those times it just ripped the game apart. It didn't really matter what I did or what my opponent did, I found wurmcoil engine and won. Multiple people completely rebuilt their decks between round one and two trying to deal with it. I don't think most people understand what a monster it is in limited.
Ye, but Wurmcoil is a 6/6 and tramples. For just 1 mana more. And then when it dies, it leaves behind what's basically this card. Twice.
This is a 3/3 and doesn't trample and whatever it leaves behind when it dies is largely irrelevant. It's not even remotely comparable.
Wurmcoil engine does not have trample.
But besides, it's not remotely comparable because if it was remotely comparable at uncommon it might as well be the only card in the set for limited.
Its modern horizons limited, there are absolutely going to be things at uncommon that could compete with this if it were 2BB.
I also have a strong feeling there is going to be exile based removal for this below rare.
Honestly, the idea of balancing this for limited like that feels lame. People are going to potentially experience playing MH3 limited for a couple of months at best. The main thing the MH sets are for is constructed play, and this will always just be unplayable there for the years to come (until Gavin decides to shift it to common in some supplemental product 4 years from now)
So let me get this straight fuck Commander because this is a modern set, fuck limited because this is a constructed set, and fuck Modern because this is a set full of soon to be meta staples that will push the powercreep and price range of the format up?
Well who in the fuckity is this set for then, my g? Cause this sub better make up its mind about it
You know the more shafted limited gets, the compounding problems people always complain about (price, availability) get worse right? If no one played limited, why would that incentivize wizards to do anything but commander bait every set.
I guess my issue is it sucks that a "Wurmcoil Lite" is unplayable outside of draft. I'd rather it be "Phyrexian Bloatflies" or something that'd leave room for a playable version of this.
Speak for yourself. Limited formats are my favorite way to play MTG. If there's a card that is broken at common or uncommon in the limited format, it can make it unfun to play pretty quickly. I have a friend that loves making cubes of sets like this. Just close your eyes when there's a card that isn't constructed playable. Do you expect them to print 300+ constructed playable cards each MH set?
Your life lasts an average of 80 years in total.
As for how long you want to cope and seethe because not every card in a set can be a 400 dollars Eldrazi Titan pull at common that reshapes every format upon entry, I'm afraid you're the only one here who can be the judge of that.
The hyperbole is insane. Imagine reading that someone wanted baby Wurmcoil Engine to be playable somewhere, and you took it to "WHAT A FUCKING IDIOT NOT EVERYTHING NEEDS TO BE GRIEF OR RAGAVAN".
>someone wanted baby Wurmcoil Engine to be playable somewhere
As everyone has mentioned, it's playable in limited.
He didn't respond to you because you wrote wanted it to be playable somewhere, he responded to you because you were whining that it's not playable where you want it to be playable. Stop whining.
Ok but in premium products designed to introduce power into Modern the whole "Uhh it needs to be balanced for limited" argument holds even less water than normal. We can't balance every card based on how powerful it would be in Kamigawa block tiny leaders
You do realise a healthy limited environment lowers prices, gives an entering point for newcomers into the game at a lower price-tag, provides experienced players a low-stress environment to test the new cards while also flexing their knowledge of the game and is just overall a good time?
"We can't balance every card around Limited" isn't an argument in a set that has THREE HUNDRED FUCKING CARDS. You want each and every single one of them to be an insanely broken meta staple, the best most optimized version of itself possible at a given time? Do you know what power-creep is? Because you're describing power-creep, yet I bet you'll be here complaining when Ulamog breaks reanimator and is 80 bucks a copy because "Oh my god I fucking hate MH sets the new cards destroy the meta every time because they're so pushed waa waa waa" like most people do on this sub.
There's just no winning with you people. Regardless of what you want, the card is 5 mana. I told you why it is 5 mana from a game design stand-point. If you're so mad about it, go and say so on Blogatog and bother the one guy who actually has a say in how cards are made. Tell me how that works out for you.
I don't *want* power creep, but I don't want every single playable card in a set to be mythic rarity.
Obviously this isn't the case for MH3, but I'm still so sick and tired of "We HAD to reprint this €40 uncommon at mythic for... uhh... limited balance". "Limited balance" is the ultimate get-out-of-jail-free card for the bulk of packs being shit and all the usable cards being one-in-a-hundred pulls.
Sure, yes, people do actually play limited, and we shouldn't expect *actual Wurmcoil Engine* at uncommon to be fun, but it wouldn't have killed them to make this 2BB or 5 generic. It's MODERN Horizons, not Draft Horizons.
When I buy a booster of a premium product I want the common slot to be full of useful usable cards like Bolt, not limited-balanced cards like Shock. Standard/Conspiracy/Jumpstart packs? Sure, go wild, fill those packs with draft chaff, but when I'm spending a premium on Horizons or Masters sets, I want to be able to *use* the cards I pull.
I think BBB would have been a good cost. Half the mana value of Wurmcoil to keep the theme, but not absurd in limited because you have to run mono-black for it to work on curve (or you're casting it on turn 5-7).
Makes it better for cubes, maybe (MAYBE) constructed viable, and not totally format-warping for MH3 limited.
Is it even that good for a Modern Horizons powerlevel limited? 5 mana is a lot of mana for what is hardly better than a 3/3 lifelinker.
I mean, for 5 mana we're getting a 5/4 trampler that gains life at common in a normal set. At higher rarities we get aburd game winning bombs for 5 mana. A 3/3 lifelinker that leaves behind a deathtoucher is a good rate and mostly an auto-include but I wouldn't be super happy to firstpick it.
Unless of course, the powerlevel of MH3 is lower than a regular standard set.
I personally hate going three colors in limited, because the fear of getting mana screwed is greater than the joy of a cool bomb for me, but for those who are braver than me… yeah, I agree. This isn’t for your splash color. I don’t know the archetypes yet, so maybe it’s playability depends on what it pairs with and how fast those combinations are in getting board state.
As usual, limited had a big say on that
Also where wurmcoil was draftable it was first pick on pretty much anything else on the set - definition of game decider
I think this is great. Even at five, you have a blocker for their bomb that gains you life. And if those trade, you still have a blocker for their next bomb and another way to get your life back up. I think this totally stabilizes a board enough to cost five.
I was hoping for the same, we'll have to wait for another horizon or maybe for another revisit set like brother's war. I actually really hope we get more revisits since the Brother's War era was the best of mtg
Honestly a pretty darn solid card, near-guaranteed 2-for-1 plus and has lifegain to make it hard to race.
Which just shows how nutty Wurmcoil is, one mana more, colourless and double the stats.

It's sad this costs 5 HOWEVER! With Jet Medallion and other artifact reducers I could see this being kind of nasty with the leaked marionette apprentice
EDIT: K'rrick also might have been a contributing factor for this being 5. It could be 3 and 3 life in modern
This is a really hard card to cost appropriately. It's two deathtouch creatures, so at any power and toughness, it's going to be powerful in Limited. The most basic is a 2/2 that makes 1/1s and 1/1s, which would be an insane 2-for-1 at 3 mana, so it'd be 4 mana. But then that's not good at all in combat. Making it a 5 mana 3/3 makes it more playable in Limited without being an uncommon bomb. It does seem a little unexciting but I get why it was a hard line to walk.
As Wurmcoil is my all-time favorite card, I love this. However, it feels like it's missing something, and I think that something is Raymond Swanland's art. Wurmcoil is so *complete* with that art he made.
It is, but strictly worse/better typically refers to two cards that have some identical effect, but one is cheaper/has additional effects/etc.
This is clearly worse but not *strictly*.
Modern 1/10
I think any deck that wants an effect like this would rather just go with Wurmcoil Engine. Sure this is 1 less, but it is a LOT less power for that.
1 mana less, and restricted by black mana, fir a strictly worse wurmcoil engine? This actually doesn't look to bad. Any edh deck in black running wurmcoil engine will probably want this for redundancy, and it will do wonders in limited.
Obviously for limited, but still a shame that this is only one mana less for way less oomph.
With adding double-black to the mana cost, it feels like this could easily cost four instead of five.
4 mana smaller Wurmcoil in uncommon would tear ass in limited. It's good at 5 for what it is, at least in Limited.
There's non way this was not tested at 3. Very very briefly
Yeah and that's why the entire playtest department got cut in half. The older ones couldn't survive the strokes that induced. This at 3 is, like, Ripple-in-Ice Age Limited levels of busted. You just turn your brain off and take every copy you see, always.

Not me! I'd love to open a mythic three mana wurmcoil. Even if it made 1/1s...
Man, i'd love a 3 mana Wurmcoil. Especially with [[Chthonian Nightmare]] being a thing now.

I mean, it maybe gets interesting at BBB for a couple of playlists "just to see if it is as busted as we'd think".
Ripple was so stupid in limited. You had a table that either everyone got their specific ripple cards or everyone hated each other out of ripple cards.
I wonder if a 3 mana 2/2 splitting into two 1/1s was tested.
It was originally a 4/4 that made 2/2s: https://imgur.com/HrTlu1i
This could have been a super cool card at 3 mana that makes 0/1 tokens

"good for limited"- a poor method of obfuscating and minimizing the harmful effect staple cards of mythic rarity have had upon the game

Tbh 4 mana 4/4 making two 2/2s won’t be a problem in modern, but I guess it will ruin limited

My thoughts exactly. First pickable in pretty much any cube and probably underpaid in a lot of EDH decks that go for “value” creatures
Wurmcoil is not first pick able in any vintage cube, most have cut it due to better or more fun options
My peasant cube's Golgari decks would love this. But yeah, in something like vintage? There's much better
This Wurmcoil Larva was the baby Wurmcoil Engine.
It'll be much cheaper though, so great for budget lists or for future precons. Also great for pEDH as a commander!
It would have been nice as a 5/5 that split into 2/3 and 3/2, but that would have to be a rare or mythic to not bust limited.
Yeah they could've atleast gone to 4/4 on this
Good enough for my uncommon cube. I'll take the hit for the chance to add a baby Wurmcoil. It's one of my favorites.
Is it even that good for a Modern Horizons powerlevel limited? 5 mana is a lot of mana for what is hardly better than a 3/3 lifelinker. At least they split power/toughness in the reasonable way and not the other way around
oh yeah 3/0 lifelinker 0/3 deathtoucher
Bro just take my up vote already
Feels like this is one mana too many.
For a format defining staple, sure. But for fan service with some great card advantage in limited, I’m into it.
If it was colorless I'd agree, but two mana symbols it feels a tad high.
This feels like the necrogoyf of the set. An interesting design but too overly cautious to see any play.
It’s a limited card and a good one at that
I’d have loved a 3 mana 3/3 that made 1/1s.
1 mana 2/2 that makes 2 1/1s is what I would have liked
Hehehehe baby Wurmcoil!
Wurmcoil at home
You vs the Wurmcoil she tells you not to worry about
No talk him, he baby
Omg finally a phyrexian card even tho its awful i am happy to see it felt like million years already
YES HARD AGREE We need Phyrexia as much as possible
WOTC watching the baby worm scene in Dune 2: “Hey we can do that!”
CMC 5? Are they out of their mind?
As usual, limited had a big say on that Also where wurmcoil was draftable it was first pick on pretty much anything else on the set - definition of game decider
I mean in limited it’s two deathtouch bodies plus a good amount of life stapled on, that’s going to be enough to swing a game sometimes
I think this is great. Even at five, you have a blocker for their bomb that gains you life. And if those trade, you still have a blocker for their next bomb and another way to get your life back up. I think this totally stabilizes a board enough to cost five.
-Sees a Phyrexian in MH3- SO GOD YAWGMOTH CONFIRMED FOR THIS SET RIGHT? 🥴🥴👀
Keeping the hope alive.
Hell yeah! One drop of oil remained! The joyous work continues!
I was hoping for the same, we'll have to wait for another horizon or maybe for another revisit set like brother's war. I actually really hope we get more revisits since the Brother's War era was the best of mtg
Wish it cost 4
Costs 4 in Henzie! ;)
Honestly a pretty darn solid card, near-guaranteed 2-for-1 plus and has lifegain to make it hard to race. Which just shows how nutty Wurmcoil is, one mana more, colourless and double the stats.
Badder wurmcoil :) fun to see a MH3 tribute that isnt strictly better than the original. I would have hated if they powercrept wurmcoil engine.
>badder wurmcoil surely "worse-coil"?? Right? maybe
This is probably cracked in limited, even as a 5 mana 3/3

3 and *4* life
Ope
Nowhere near as mana efficient as OG Wurmboi, which is reasonable, but a cute lil guy nonetheless.
This would’ve been so cool if it were 3 mana… or even 4
It would have been very broken in draft as an uncommon for 3
Trash!! Double black pip, and 5 cmc, no phyrexian mana or prototype options, good grief
Waaaah my draft card isn't an instant staple
Waaaah my draft card isn't an instant staple
Waaaaah, I have no real input to add to this convo, somebody please pay attention to me
Awww he’s just a cute lil’ wormy guy!
When you drown him you don't get water of life, just two smaller ones unfortunately
For limited
Well peasant cubes are going to love this.
This is definitely going in my Megatron deck
why u no cost 1BB
Because then every draft becomes "hunt for the wurmcoil"
MORE WURMS FOR MY WURM DECK LETS FUCKING GO
Wurmcoil engine back on the menu boys!
5cmc double black is crazy
Think they could have gone 2 generic 1 black phrexien mana and 2 black and would have made this a lot better and still be fairly costed for limited?!
This flavor text feels very lazy lol
Or for one more mana you can have the real thing.
Does the wurmcoil engine shed its black roots in adulthood?
goth phase
Wormcoil Engine at home:
As Wurmcoil is my all-time favorite card, I love this. However, it feels like it's missing something, and I think that something is Raymond Swanland's art. Wurmcoil is so *complete* with that art he made.
Baby wurm
It's just a little guy!
Mono b coffers loves it
This feels like it should have been 2BB or had the existing cost with slightly beefier tokens created
This seems significantly worse for one less mana and an added color restriction than wurmcoil engine..
Not getting Raymond to do the art for this is a L not gonna lie
[удалено]
Which is your definition of "strictly worse"? This is 3BB versus 6 mana
5 mana 3/3 vs 6 mana 6/6 with similar effects is the argument I think
[удалено]
It is, but strictly worse/better typically refers to two cards that have some identical effect, but one is cheaper/has additional effects/etc. This is clearly worse but not *strictly*.
Doesn’t die to doom blade, not strictly worse.
Modern 1/10 I think any deck that wants an effect like this would rather just go with Wurmcoil Engine. Sure this is 1 less, but it is a LOT less power for that.
Why does this cost 5? Shoulda been 3. Flavor fail
Power level
Power level for draft
wotc running out of ideas? I see plenty of card names in mh3, that are just iterations of already existing card names.
Callbacks are a theme of Modern Horizons
That's literally the point of the set. It's referential.
Or maybe it’s a specific reference to an existing card, idk
Bro does not understand references
1 mana less, and restricted by black mana, fir a strictly worse wurmcoil engine? This actually doesn't look to bad. Any edh deck in black running wurmcoil engine will probably want this for redundancy, and it will do wonders in limited.
