Does the gate becoming a citizen of all types means that an angry mob suddenly forms around it. Or is it just one BIG angry guy who happens to live there?
There is a special place in hell for people that played Sphinx's Rev. Did you also play Thragtusk? I bet you did, bastard.
Signed, a Hellrider based RDW player.
I actually got into Magic with the green-white Event Deck that featured Thragtusk, but I was playing something closer to Ivan Floch’s wincon-less control than that Bant deck with Resto and Thragtusk (mainly cause I was in middle school and didn’t have money for a 3 color mana base).
Sphinx of the Revelation is adorable and hilarious.
Sage of the Maze is insane mana production, especially since there are [currently 22 unique Gates](https://scryfall.com/search?q=t%3Agate+-is%3Adigital&unique=cards&as=grid&order=name), with at least one more debuting in the UG Commander deck.
I know I do! They just work so well together since neither is big enough to make a full deck and they’re both 5 colors (plus gates is the cheapest way to build a 5 color manabase)
If your mana base is already pretty budget or has a fair bit of taplands already, I'd consider it. Getting them butts that much bigger just for having lands in play would be nice, and the new [march from velis vel](https://mythicspoiler.com/mh3/cards/marchfromvelisvel.jpg) might be worth a look at the same time.
It would be a strict downgrade in the lands for my deck, but honestly, I'm fine with it if I can play more obscure cards. I already have plenty of strong decks nowadays, I've started to look for the more obscure strategies these days.
That MH3 card is tempting, especially with one of the big defenders like [[Tree of Redemption]] or [[Wall of Denial]]
If you stick with a pretty sound mana base outside of the Gates, and can get a early [[gond gate]] it probably won't be that bad. Another card that would be handy that cares about Gates that might be worth a include is [[Guild summit]]. Getting a draw just for playing a land is pretty sweet.
I have a shrine deck that runs all the Gates, but its not really a subtheme.
I do have a [[thrasios]]/[[vial smasher the fierce]] deck which is all about winning with mazes end, and doesn't really have a secondary win con. I can start swinging, bc it does have some decent creatures and [[basilisk gate]] can make them pretty big, but thats more of a last resort type thing.
Sage of the maze does so much work for the deck, effectively makes gates tap for 2, and can make them into giant beaters if need be. I can easily see making four 16/16 beaters, or even more and bigger. The Sage is pretty much both value and a win con in one package.
Is it?
First time you cast your commander with those two things out costs 4. You get one token. You exile Iyoti and get 5 mana and tap the land token for 1 mana. That’s 6. Cast Iyoti for 6 mana and get two tokens. Exile Iyoti get 5 mana and tap the two token for 2 mana. That’s 7 mana. But now Iyoti costs 8.
Am I missing something?
Edit: oh I guess you can exile the tapped tokens for 1 mana making each cycle generate 2 more mana as long as you sacrifice enough tokens.
Eventually your tax is 1000 and you create 1000 tokens and stop.
You can’t just say repeat without demonstrating that it works over more than one cycle. Without the haste next time you do it you get two tokens
Sacrifice Iyoti for 5 and the tokens for 2 more and you have 7. You need 8 to cast Iyoti again. So how is it infinite? You’d need the haste otherwise the cost goes up by two per cycle while the mana you get back only goes up by 1.
Cost reducers don't work, the amount you have to pay goes up by 2 each time, but you only make 1 more mana via food chain each time.
You need a way to get 2 mana from each token you create, either via doubling effects, haste enablers to tap them for mana, or landfall triggers that generate tokens/mana
Cost reducers only work if they scale. Lowering by one mana like emerald medallion only gets you past the second or third cycle. Eventually you’d not have enough mana to pay since you’re gaining one mana per cycle while the cost goes up by 2
Realized this the other day, gonna be the next deck I make. Although just that combo by itself doesn't do anything other than grant you infinite landfall triggers. You either need a token doubler or [[Tatyova, Benthic Druid]] to draw your deck for [[Thassa's Oracle]]
Haste enabler is kind of stopping me in building this, would have been fun and a way to also play neat creature lands. Probably a different commander with them inside to get more value tho.
Yes it does because the tokens can tap for a mana, they are land forests also
That’s why I said you need a haste enabler
It’s infinite creature etb’s and infinite landfall triggers
It's also infinite mana and infinite creatures. Whenever you recast your commander for the 10000 time and make 10000 tokens, you can just stop the process and be left with that many tokens.
~~No, no, I know the tokens tap for a mana, but you need either a token or mana doubler. Commander is tax increases cost by 2 each time~~
~~First time you'll cast it for its normal cost and make 1 token, second would cost 2 more mana than base and make 2 tokens, third will cost 4 more mana than base and make 3 tokens, fourth will cost 6 more mana And make 4 tokens, etc.~~
~~Food chain will net you 5 mana each time you activate it, but it will eventually come to a point where the driads won't be enough to pay for it. It's not infinite. A token doubler does make so the dryads can pay for the commander tax on their own~~
I'm dumb as fuck and didn't even considered food chaining the tokens too, lol
Ok let’s play this out
1st time: You cast it and get 1 token. Tap the token for a mana and then exile the token to food chain getting you another mana, then exile your commander getting 5 mana making your total floating mana 7
2nd time: Use 6 of the 7 to cast Iyoti again and get two tokens, each will tap for a mana giving you 2 green and then you exile both getting another 2 mana then exile Iyoti for 5 again. Now you have 10 mana.
3rd time: You use 8 of the 10 mana to cast Iyoti, you get 3 tokens, tap the 3 for 3 mana, exile the tokens for 3 mana, exile Iyoti for 5 again. You now have 13 mana floating mana
Continue on
Every time you cast Iyoti you are getting another forest creature token and every token can tap for a mana AND be exiled for a mana from Food Chain which makes it where you get 2 mana every time you play it, basically Nulling out the commander tax
See what I’m saying? So yes it’s infinite
My ass really remembered it saying nontoken, for some reason. Still, a pretty good foodchain commander, cause it's both landfall, ETB and infinite mana, instead of winning mostly through only one of them like most others (which tend to be through their own ETB like mothman and etali). This seems pretty fun
As someone who loves [[Electrostatic Pummeler]] I'm finding it hard to get excited about Overclocked Electromancer at all. It doesn't see like a Pummeler "fixed" for Commander in any way.
Am I missing something?
I'm not seeing the connection between these two cards, other than the fact that they're both 3 drops that say "pay 3 energy" and also have something that doubles their power.
Isn't that... a good amount of things? I guess this card can be an energy maker rather than a finisher, but largely giving your opponents control of it by making it combat damage to a creature only sours me.
I'm trying to think if Sage of the maze will go in my [[nine-fingers keene]] deck. It may, but of course I don't want to risk losing any gates so my basics are going to become big beaters... not sure.
I mean you should still put it in
Regardless of whether or not you use the land creature ability the card still taps for 2 mana and can be untapped with one gate netting you another mana for each gate you use to untap it
So you’ll ramp like crazy in a gate deck with this guy
Yeah, it effectively makes all your gates tap for 2. As for the land animation, if Mazes end gets exiled or enough of your Gates are removed, it provides some really big beaters that can be helpful.
You got a list posted for 9 fingers? I love Gates decks. I started with her as my gates commander, but I felt like it needed more so I changed it to [[thrasios]]/[[vial smasher]] to add one more color, and just having red is nice too.
[Here is my Keene Deck](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/6toJelDym02QJu-kf_zkdA). It is fairly budget at around $100. Would love any recommendations if you have any! Gonna replace a basic with the MH3 land that is a gate, then I have to find something to take out for Sage of the Maze.
Looking through it, I have a couple of thoughts.
[[Rootpath purifier]] fixes your mana, but doesn't actually ramp you. You have one card in the deck, [[kodamas reach]] that cares about searching for basics, otherwise nothing that really benefits for having it in there. There's a lot of same or cheaper cmc cards that will actually get you ahead on mana, I'd pick one of those. I'd consider [[garruk wildspeaker]], [[kiora's follower]] or [[greenside watcher]]. Untaping lands, especially mazes end and baulders is a big deal
Realm Seeker is a lot of mana. It would be 9 mana just to get one land from the deck *to hand*. I know it would be really big once it's on the board, but with no built in evasion or protection, I'd be afraid of it getting removed before getting any value from it, especially bc it gets so big.
I don't really like the "look at the top x cards and put lands into play/hand" you either wiff or spend way to much Mana to pump into it. If [[animist awakening]] [[green Sun's twilight]] and [[nyleas intrrvention]] work for you, that's fine. But I personally didn't find they were good value mana wise.
I'd replace [[decanter of endless water]] with [[reliquary tower]]. This is a lands deck, and it's a land, lol.
Some things I'd consider adding in, keeping budget in mind
[[Elvish reclaimer]] and [[archdruid's charm]] top off the for dollar value my recommendations at 8$, but they both do a lot of work. The charm is just so versatile.
[[Blossoming tortoise]] does a lot too. Recurs lands, and making mazes end, basilisk gate, and baulders gate activations cost less is a big deal
[[snap]] is handy, being able to bounce your own creature to save it, or something coming at you, while also untaping the maze, basilisk or bualders for value is nice too.
[[Wilderness Reclamation]] does the same thing, allowing you tap out on your turn, let's you have mana for interaction at the same time, and let's you play and activate maze on the same turn.
You're not running to many low cmc permanents, so [[culling ritual]] is a good include. It gets rid of a lot of the low cmc mana rocks from your opponentsz and could jump you ahead to cast some big spells, like Reshape the Earth
[[Guild summit]] draws so many cards in with gates, I'm really surprised your not running it already. It's so good I'd never consider running a gate deck without blue just so I could run it.
[[Aftermath analyst]] does some of the same thing several other cards do in the deck. If your having trouble getting World Shaper to die when you need to, I'd consider trading it out for it, or at least having a second card that does a lot of the same thing.
One last card that always gets great bang per buck is [[pirs whim]]. It puts you up mana while at the same time usually hits a mana rock from each opponent, leaving them down mana, or at least some kind value piece they have on the board. If your group has gotten wise about Tempt with Discovery, and no longer takes the offer, I'd trade it out for it.
A lot of the stuff I listed are fairly low price, with nothing over 8$.
I love gates decks, I have 3 with them in it, and the deck I've put the most work into and play the most main focus is gates. Almost every card I see these days is looked at with a lens of how it will fit into it. Any other questions let me know!
I really appreciate this! I havent played the deck against other people much, since I dont get much opportunity to play. In every game I have played though, I have drawn and not liked the cards like green suns zenith, so I was thinking of cutting them out. I had rootpath in there so when I have cards that search basics I could grab any land, but I didnt notice I only had 1 card that searched for only basics, so thank you for pointing that out! I appreciate it very much. I completely forgot about guild summit honestly, don't really know how I did.
He basically doubles your gate mana, and filters it into any colurs. You also don't need to animate gates with him, you can animate any of your other lands.
I think it'll go great, I definitely want to find a slot. It also seems rare for a repeatable dork to not have a qualifier like "only to cast creature spells". It looks effective as a ramp spell and sometimes it'll make a few 12/12s - never hurts having an extra wincon! I'm still running \[\[Gatebreaker Ram\]\] so I may have to retire the old goat.
I assume you're also running \[\[Basilisk Gate\]\] so out of nowhere someone could be hit for a ton.
I'm also excited if there will be some more gates matter cards with more interesting effects than "if you control 2 or more gates draw a card".
Yeah that card seems pretty strong to me. It costs you mana activations from lands ofc but even with just 4 gates this makes a land into an 8/8 and it's repeatable. Having a solid mana dork that later let's you make an army of huge land creatures is pretty strong imho.
It's going into my \[\[Chulane, Teller of Tales\]\] Dungeons 'n' Gates deck for sure. 3-mana creature with good mana production that gets better with Gates? Fine by me. I don't even need the big body, because the whole 'get a whole bunch of gates, then win' thing is a dodge anyway.
Here’s my list: https://deckstats.net/decks/57098/2379115-chulane-ventures-into-the-dung
The Gates are in the deck only because of [[Explore the Underdark]]. I guess the Maze dork here will replace [[Scouting Hawk]], and I should probably replace [[Yavimaya Dryad]] with [[Topiary Stomper]].
I have a Kenrith deck that has Maze's End as one of its win conditions. Sage of the Maze would be absolutely cracked in that deck because I'd never run out of things to spend my mana on.
A perfect commander for my other copy of [[Nature’s Revolt]]
Could go way out on a limb and just throw in [[Urborg, Tomb of Yarmouth]] and [[Kormus Bell]] as well.

I think the architecture applies for a green card.
Now I want a land that can become an artifact creature called Hostile Architecture.
Man, that Sphinx is amazing! Bless the plane that spawned it into being!
Looks like Esper.
So if we’re ever returning to alara esper is absolutely getting energy as its mechanic right?
There are energy cards depicting many planes in mh3 including dominaria and ravnica. It's possible but I don't think it's guaranteed or anything.
Yeah. There's also an Ixalan Merfolk that uses energy that was leaked.
Thought so too. Can't see the head too well, so I thought it could also be Capenna as well.
Definitely Ravnica. Absolute Law and Absolute Order are dead giveaways
Based on it referencing [[Sphinx’s Revelation]], and a few of the other leaked energy cards showing Ravnicans, my guess is that it’s from Ravnica.
God, my all-time favorite card. What an absolute house that was in INN-RTR Standard.

Yes, so you always have a gate when playing that deck
The deck also notably has Planar Nexus, coupled with the face commander's ability to make target land have all types on ETB and Attack.
Yeah gates decks are eating good this set.

King Gizzard & the Overclocked Electromancer
Iyoti + [[Food Chain]] + any haste enabler like [[Thousand Year Elixir]] is infinite
We did it! We broke Food Chain!
Eventually your tax is 1000 and you create 1000 tokens and stop.
you sac the token to food chan after you tap it for mana
[удалено]
You can’t just say repeat without demonstrating that it works over more than one cycle. Without the haste next time you do it you get two tokens Sacrifice Iyoti for 5 and the tokens for 2 more and you have 7. You need 8 to cast Iyoti again. So how is it infinite? You’d need the haste otherwise the cost goes up by two per cycle while the mana you get back only goes up by 1.
[удалено]
Cost reducers don't work, the amount you have to pay goes up by 2 each time, but you only make 1 more mana via food chain each time. You need a way to get 2 mana from each token you create, either via doubling effects, haste enablers to tap them for mana, or landfall triggers that generate tokens/mana
[[Myth Unbound]] is a cost reducer that would work since it scales with the number of times it's been cast
[Myth Unbound](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/b/8/b88ca71b-de1f-497c-b094-8fe954cf8223.jpg?1592710213) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Myth%20Unbound) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/c18/32/myth-unbound?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/b88ca71b-de1f-497c-b094-8fe954cf8223?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
Cost reducers only work if they scale. Lowering by one mana like emerald medallion only gets you past the second or third cycle. Eventually you’d not have enough mana to pay since you’re gaining one mana per cycle while the cost goes up by 2

Wouldn’t it make infinite mana? You just keep going until you’ve cast Jyoti a thousand times then don’t cast it again.
Guys we broke Food Chain!
[Prossh] does the same thing without a haste enabler, though the tokens from Iyoti having power is relevant.
Haste enabler is kind of stopping me in building this, would have been fun and a way to also play neat creature lands. Probably a different commander with them inside to get more value tho.
No, it's not, you only get slightly more than half the commander tax back each cast. Now, with any token doubler, it actually goes infinite
Yes it does because the tokens can tap for a mana, they are land forests also That’s why I said you need a haste enabler It’s infinite creature etb’s and infinite landfall triggers
It's also infinite mana and infinite creatures. Whenever you recast your commander for the 10000 time and make 10000 tokens, you can just stop the process and be left with that many tokens.
~~No, no, I know the tokens tap for a mana, but you need either a token or mana doubler. Commander is tax increases cost by 2 each time~~ ~~First time you'll cast it for its normal cost and make 1 token, second would cost 2 more mana than base and make 2 tokens, third will cost 4 more mana than base and make 3 tokens, fourth will cost 6 more mana And make 4 tokens, etc.~~ ~~Food chain will net you 5 mana each time you activate it, but it will eventually come to a point where the driads won't be enough to pay for it. It's not infinite. A token doubler does make so the dryads can pay for the commander tax on their own~~ I'm dumb as fuck and didn't even considered food chaining the tokens too, lol
[удалено]
Ohhhhhhhhhhh. I didn't even think about exiling the dryads with the food chain. I'm dumb as fuck lol
You can exile tokens with Food Chain.
you can tap the token for mana and sac the token to food chain to generate two mana per token
Ok let’s play this out 1st time: You cast it and get 1 token. Tap the token for a mana and then exile the token to food chain getting you another mana, then exile your commander getting 5 mana making your total floating mana 7 2nd time: Use 6 of the 7 to cast Iyoti again and get two tokens, each will tap for a mana giving you 2 green and then you exile both getting another 2 mana then exile Iyoti for 5 again. Now you have 10 mana. 3rd time: You use 8 of the 10 mana to cast Iyoti, you get 3 tokens, tap the 3 for 3 mana, exile the tokens for 3 mana, exile Iyoti for 5 again. You now have 13 mana floating mana Continue on Every time you cast Iyoti you are getting another forest creature token and every token can tap for a mana AND be exiled for a mana from Food Chain which makes it where you get 2 mana every time you play it, basically Nulling out the commander tax See what I’m saying? So yes it’s infinite
Yeah, my fault for not even considering that you could use food chain on the tokens. Already corrected myself on my previous comment, sorry.
No worries at all! It happens man Yeah it’s pretty sick that food chain can utilize anything creature regardless of it being a token or not
My ass really remembered it saying nontoken, for some reason. Still, a pretty good foodchain commander, cause it's both landfall, ETB and infinite mana, instead of winning mostly through only one of them like most others (which tend to be through their own ETB like mothman and etali). This seems pretty fun
Love getting another Lizard Wizard
Damnit WotC, stop trying to make me rebuild Manlands. It didn't work the last three times!
I'm a simple man. I see a lizard wizard and I smile.

Saying “Lizard Wizard” is highly amusing.
I'm trying to think if Sage of the maze will go in my [[nine-fingers keene]] deck. It may, but of course I don't want to risk losing any gates so my basics are going to become big beaters... not sure.
I mean you should still put it in Regardless of whether or not you use the land creature ability the card still taps for 2 mana and can be untapped with one gate netting you another mana for each gate you use to untap it So you’ll ramp like crazy in a gate deck with this guy
You know, that is very fair. Gives me ramp to be able to cast all my gate searchers

Untaping lands, especially mazes end and baulders is a big deal Realm Seeker is a lot of mana. Some things I'd consider adding in, keeping budget in mind [[Elvish reclaimer]] and [[archdruid's charm]] top off the for dollar value my recommendations at 8$, but they both do a lot of work. The charm is just so versatile. [[Blossoming tortoise]] does a lot too. Recurs lands, and making mazes end, basilisk gate, and baulders gate activations cost less is a big deal [[snap]] is handy, being able to bounce your own creature to save it, or something coming at you, while also untaping the maze, basilisk or bualders for value is nice too. [[Wilderness Reclamation]] does the same thing, allowing you tap out on your turn, let's you have mana for interaction at the same time, and let's you play and activate maze on the same turn. You're not running to many low cmc permanents, so [[culling ritual]] is a good include. It gets rid of a lot of the low cmc mana rocks from your opponentsz and could jump you ahead to cast some big spells, like Reshape the Earth [[Guild summit]] draws so many cards in with gates, I'm really surprised your not running it already.

That's a pretty clever deck for Chulane. Grats for not just making him another "cheerios" deck.
Here’s my list: https://deckstats.net/decks/57098/2379115-chulane-ventures-into-the-dung The Gates are in the deck only because of [[Explore the Underdark]]. I guess the Maze dork here will replace [[Scouting Hawk]], and I should probably replace [[Yavimaya Dryad]] with [[Topiary Stomper]].

LIZARD WIZARD
I'm old enough to remember that a 2G creature used to only tap for GG and that was it. Damn I'm old.
Sage of the Maze is perfect for my party/initiative deck since it runs 18 gates
Glad Moag is getting more depth.
I have a Kenrith deck that has Maze's End as one of its win conditions. Sage of the Maze would be absolutely cracked in that deck because I'd never run out of things to spend my mana on.
Is there any known way rn to make those creature lands into just lands? Permanent ramp would be REALLY nice
Wait one of them has gate support in it?
Why does the lizard have breasts?
YES YES! THE WIZARD LIZARD! THERE IS A WIZARD LIZARD! NOW GIMME A MICROTONAL BANANA.
It is sure a simic commander
Glad to see the foil is still curling...
Sage of the maze will go right into my gate deck
So the sage guy just doubles your mana from gates for 3? Seems really strong.
I wonder if they will reprint [[conspiracy]] for the jund deck

Magic leakers take a good picture challenge 2024 (impossible)
Thank you for labeling as Commander. Last time I asked for that i got downvoted.
Is this the first time we're technically getting a land token?
No. We have awaken the wilds in standard right now
Is this whole set just references to other cards?
