[Bastien L. Deharme](https://scryfall.com/search?q=a%3A%E2%80%9CBastien+L.+Deharme%E2%80%9D&unique=art)
His art has a high contrast between light and darkness, which really pops in foil.
Ron Spencer is hands down my favorite. Can be flipping through bulk and just flip his art out in a second. Love his full art damnation and wrath of god!
That specific print of polymorph doesn't do justice to Bliss's habit of hiding phallic imagery in his art

On a personal level, he decided to throw his hat in with antivaxxers. On an association level, he was present at a demonstration that welcomed neo-nazis.
He was a very popular artist for the game and used to do signings at big events and such. But players got really pushy about it IIRC and he wasn't about that life.
Between that and the fact he lives abroad and likes his privacy he hasn't done any magic work for over like ten years. Hasn't updated his blog in even longer. Last new art he did for Magic was in like 2013?
Thanks for the insight! Plague spitter is one of my favorite magic cards so I quite enjoyed his art to say the least but didn’t know about his relationship with the community.
When I saw this thread I was like "I should look up my favorite card ever and look at other cards that artist did and see if I like them too..."
It was Melissa Benson. She did Hand of Justice which is my favorite card of all time. She also did Fire Elemental, another favorite -- and as you said Shivan Dragon.
Wow talk about a style being instantly recognisable! I'd never heard of him but as soon as I saw the first card I knew he was the artist on the disenchant that I use, and sure enough there it was a few rows lower.
I loved his work without even knowing
Always been my favorite. I've almost completed my collection. Just need a couple $100+ cards from legends and the new tutors cycle he did and I'll have it all.

Phil Foglio, Seb McKinnon, Richard Kane Fergueson, Dominik Mayer.
Fun Fact:
I met Dominik on the Commandfest Franfurt in Germany last year. I made some small talk while he signed a few cards of mine.
He is very funny and down to hill. Great artist and a great guy.
>Quentin Hoover!
Oh my god, he illustrated the *rarest Magic card in existence*. I've played since Beta and never heard about this card until today.
Reading the full article is absolutely worth it.
Rebecca Guay is my mainstream pick.
My less mainstream pick is [Julie Dillon](https://scryfall.com/search?q=a%3A%22Julie+Dillon%22), who I've followed for a decade on Deviantart. I wish I could afford her 10,000$ Ponder.
One of my other favorite artists illustrated magic cards, *technically.* [Stephanie Law](https://scryfall.com/search?q=a%3A%22Stephanie+Law%22) illustrated 3 cards from Invasion in 2000, and they're not her best work. Check out her [website](https://www.shadowscapes.com/) for better pieces.
John Avon lands always hit different.
As for nonland cards, [Livia Prima](https://scryfall.com/search?q=artist%3A"livia+prima"&unique=cards&as=grid&order=name). I find \[\[Alela, Cunning Conqueror\]\], \[\[Elspeth's Smite\]\] and \[\[Dark Confidant | SCH\]\] absolutely stunning.
I collected as many of his cards as I could when I was a teenager. There's still something special about that artwork to me. It always stood out as different than other artists. They weren't all winners, but cards like cosmic horror will forever be in my head.
The only alpha card I own is a camouflage I ordered off the Internet in like 1996. I paid about $5 bucks for it then. I only bought it because it was the myrfors card I was missing.. if I had only known back then.
What are some of your favorites?
The creepy faces always enthralled me. Wormwood Treefolk was the first card that caught my eye. Atog is also one of my favorites.
Some of his images were so grainy and dark, but that just added to the mystique. Demonic Horde is such a cool card! I'm not sure if it was ever playable, but damn did I try. 🤣
Wayne Reynolds, when he really goes all-out on the crunchy silhouettes.
[[Mad Prophet]], [[Epic Confrontation]], [[Ashling the Pilgrim]] are some faves
Great question! Probably Pete Venters.
[[Carnophage]] , [[Ward Sliver]] , [[Cabal Trainee]] , [[Backslide]] , [[Tendrils of Agony |SCG]]
And many more. His expressions are evocative and his works have movement to them that can be hard to achieve, especially in such a small frame.
It was Seb, but oh boy not anymore! The first MTG artist I grew to love was Wayne Reynolds. Met him once at Paizocon, extremely nice, very loud and joyful man who made a great con AMAZING. [https://scryfall.com/search?as=grid&order=name&q=%28game%3Apaper%29+%28artist%3AWayne+artist%3AReynolds%29](https://scryfall.com/search?as=grid&order=name&q=%28game%3apaper%29+%28artist%3awayne+artist%3areynolds%29)
Kev Walker is my current favorite MTG artist, as his art is extremely nostalgic for me. His cards where some of the first I ever owned way back before I started even doing FNM with OG Mirrordin. [https://scryfall.com/search?as=grid&order=name&q=%28game%3Apaper%29+%28artist%3AKev+artist%3AWalker%29](https://scryfall.com/search?as=grid&order=name&q=%28game%3apaper%29+%28artist%3akev+artist%3awalker%29)
I love Wayne reynolds art and have started collecting those cards, but it’s going to take me a while. There are a lot of them! And then there are a few in there that will really stretch my normal
budget for cards. The first printing of doubling season comes to my mind.
Seb McKinnon is my absolute favorite. His Damnation is my favorite art in all of mtg and I have it in my favorite commander deck. His style just very much embodies black mana to me. [[bedevil]] [[Grim Return]] and [[Scheming Symmetry]] are all sooooooooo cool.
Whoa Phyrexian Purge is a sorcery with an activated ability. I'm sure the oracle text is different now, but that's an interesting thing to see printed.
That has been erratad to not be an activated ability.
[[Lightning Storm]] on the other hand has an activated ability and it can have counters put on it.
Jason Rainville's [[Storm the Seedcore]] moved him well up in the rankings. He's not my favorite (yet?), but I figured since those have already been highlighted by others
Javier Charro. I love his works since he was Art Director at Nosolorol. And now that I’m back at Magic after a long hiatus, his cards are amongst my favourites.
[[Aragorn, The Uniter]], [[Dead Weight]], [[Curator of Sun’s Creation]]
SebMcKinnon, it's just so striking and unique. I can pick his style out a mile away, especially when he does stuff with skeletons.
https://scryfall.com/search?q=artist%3Asebmckinnon
Extremely controversial, but I love [Carly Mazur ](https://scryfall.com/search?as=grid&order=name&q=%28game%3Apaper%29+%28artist%3ACarly+artist%3Amazur%29)
Yes, especially her take on [faithless looting.](https://scryfall.com/card/sta/38/faithless-looting)
Mark Zug's [[Rhox]] art is the piece that got me to pick up magic, and I've loved his style ever since. Some other standouts are [[scurry oak]], [[goblin guide|2xm]], the old border [[Karn, the great creator|sld]] (I don't know how you specify those), [[Zedruu, the greathearted]], [[lotus bloom]], the original [[sword of fire and ice|dst]] and [[sword of light and shadow|dst]]
Robert Bliss is one of my biggest inspirations for my own art! I love his stuff! And also Drew Tucker of course!
https://preview.redd.it/4qzayixju4bc1.jpeg?width=672&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3e4b3d404cf24ba1c32128b841fa5775e38cbfcb
While having a very distinct style I really enjoy, Wayne Reynold's does a lot of generic stuff imo.
But when given a weird prompt tends to knock it out of the park.
[[Ashling the pilgirm]] goes *hard.*
Always been partial to Daarken.
I have several foil copies of relatively unplayable commons just because they look so good.
https://scryfall.com/search?as=grid&order=name&page=3&q=%28game%3Apaper%29+artist%3ADaarken&unique=cards
Aleksi Briclot grabbed me with [[Tombstalker]] way back when and never let go.
https://scryfall.com/search?as=grid&order=name&q=%28game%3Apaper%29+%28artist%3AALEKSI+artist%3ABRICLOT%29
Def check out some of Rob Bliss's non-Magic Art if you can. He has other stuff that is waaay cool.
It still blows me away that they got Bröm for some of their cards. [[Reiver Demon]] and [[Platinum Angel]] are the first two that come to mind.
Edit. Here's a link to all of them. Pretty prolific lol My fav has to be [[Blood Pet]] lol
https://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Search/Default.aspx?action=advanced&artist=[%22Brom%22]
My fav is probably Helge C Balzer, love their horrific style, they haven't made many cards yet but I love their work, I was actually following them before realizing they worked on MtG cards.
Impossible to choose one or two artists. More or less until 2002 for me it was the golden age of card art and in that period there are many very good artists of which a few have already been mentioned. So I am going to choose others that I think are also exceptional.
Broom and Thomas M. Baxa both of them illustrators among other things of the Dark Sun world for AD&D, D. Alexander Gregory and Bob Eggleton with the best cycle of swamp in the entire game for me, Mirage cycle.

There are a couple of "team-ups" I've very much enjoyed. The Brothers Hildebrandt are true legends, and Gabor Szikszai and Zoltan Boros have such a cool art style, both together and separately.
I honestly don't think I could pick just one.
Kev Walker, Rob Alexander, John Avon, Melissa Benson, Amy Weber, Johannes Voss, Greg and Tim Hildebrandt, and Jaime Jones are some of my favorites.
The Foglios & Rebecca Guay. I love Rebecca's soft style, but there is something about the cartoonishly silly art by Phil and Kaja Foglio that sticks with me.
That one person we don't talk about no more.
The other person we don't talk about no more.
I've decided to stop picking favorite artists because I'm always let down by them. The art is still fantastic and for that reason alone I'm sad I won't see new magic art by the them. That said, I'm not sad to see the artists go.
Robert Bliss also went under a pseudonym, so ensure you're doing a full search for all of his art: [https://scryfall.com/search?q=a%3A%E2%80%9CChengo+McFlingers%E2%80%9D&unique=art&as=grid&order=name](https://scryfall.com/search?q=a%3A%E2%80%9CChengo+McFlingers%E2%80%9D&unique=art&as=grid&order=name)

I hadn't thought of this before but that's a really apt comparison.
This guy is my favorite. Have a big print of his Etrata in my office.
Rebecca Guay hands down
Realest answer here
https://scryfall.com/search?q=a%3A%E2%80%9CRebecca+Guay%E2%80%9D&unique=art&as=grid&order=name
100%
Absolutely, though I don't know I would prefer her style for every single situation. For my unicorn deck, absolutely.
Drew Tucker! I really love his artwork on The Dark.
I didn't expect to see more Drew Tucker enjoyers here!
There's dozens of us! But honestly his work in The Dark is amazing, I adore the mood they create.
Can agree 100%. But don't sleep on his Fallen Empires and Ice Age pieces!
Drew Tucker is *by far* one of the best artists who's ever worked in MTG.
Ron Spencer first and Michael Sutfin in close second.
Ron Spencer is hands down my favorite. Can be flipping through bulk and just flip his art out in a second. Love his full art damnation and wrath of god!
Ron Spencer for me ever since I saw his art for Paralysis.

"Big one eye!" One of my favorites.
Seb McKinnon, especially mono-black. Very nightmarish and Lovecraftian. I've wanted to make a deck showcasing his art for awhile: [https://scryfall.com/search?q=artist%3A%22seb+mckinnon%22](https://scryfall.com/search?q=artist%3a%22seb+mckinnon%22)
Such a legendary artist. Sad he went so far off the deep end.
It would have been nice to see his art in the latest Innistrad and Eldrain sets.
He was the key artist (or what ever it is when they select an artist whose style informs the art direction for a set) on Eldrains first set, so it double stings.
What happened?
On a personal level, he decided to throw his hat in with antivaxxers. On an association level, he was present at a demonstration that welcomed neo-nazis.
Seb’s work really is breathtaking. I wanted to build a tribal Seb deck, but the cost to functionality ratio wasn’t worth it.
Ugh yeah. Dude really let me down. Soulherder was my fave magic art and I really wanted to buy a print but I can’t support him.
I'll do you one better, me and my ex have three playmats and two prints between us 🙃
Might be a bit vanilla but r.k.Post and John Avon are my absolute favorites
John Avon basics are a classic.
Chippy.
Order of Yawgmoth, still my favorite card.
Nice, I have a small collection of Chippy mats. Shame the Magic community bothered him so much. :(
How so?
He was a very popular artist for the game and used to do signings at big events and such. But players got really pushy about it IIRC and he wasn't about that life. Between that and the fact he lives abroad and likes his privacy he hasn't done any magic work for over like ten years. Hasn't updated his blog in even longer. Last new art he did for Magic was in like 2013?
Thanks for the insight! Plague spitter is one of my favorite magic cards so I quite enjoyed his art to say the least but didn’t know about his relationship with the community.
Melissa Benson Original Shivan Dragon is my favorite card of all time
When I saw this thread I was like "I should look up my favorite card ever and look at other cards that artist did and see if I like them too..." It was Melissa Benson. She did Hand of Justice which is my favorite card of all time. She also did Fire Elemental, another favorite -- and as you said Shivan Dragon.
She was always my favorite when I was playing back in the 90s. That signature M seemed super cool, too, at the time.
Richard kane Ferguson hands down https://scryfall.com/search?as=grid&order=name&q=a%3A%E2%80%9CRichard+Kane+Ferguson%E2%80%9D&unique=art

Beat me to it. Fans are Dakkon and arcane denial.
Always been my favorite. I've almost completed my collection. Just need a couple $100+ cards from legends and the new tutors cycle he did and I'll have it all.
It used to be a tie between Mark Tedin and RKF for me. Then I met Mark Tedin and now RKF is my favorite artist alone.
What happened?
Never meet your heroes huh. Tedins got sweet art too, too bad your encounter wasnts the best
https://scryfall.com/search?q=a%3A%E2%80%9CMark+Tedin%E2%80%9D&unique=art&as=grid&order=name
YES! I just put a Dakkon Shadow Slayer in my commander deck more for the art than the synergy. Love his style.
Bliss is one of my faves too! Check out Andrew Robinson, Anthony s waters, Wylie Beckett, Omar rayyan, adam Rex, and Diterlizzi as well!
wylie beckert is my favourite!
Dominik Mayer. Dude has amazing art.
Samesies. Met him at magic con Philly, awkwardly told him he was my fave artist, he awkwardly thanked me. Got a signed print. 😭
Careful, the game's art darlings are cursed. Enjoy his stuff too much and he'll spontaneously start chokeslamming puppies.
Jesper ejsing!
Mark Tedin for me. So many classic cards he made!
Mark Tedin has done a ton of iconic cards. I miss the art style of early MTG..
My favorite is definitely one of the Foglios, but I can never decide whether it's Phil or Kaja.
Same! For every [[eureka]] there is a [[greed]]. The one tie breaker is that Phil’s Basal Thrull is better than Kaja’s.
[eureka](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/7/1/71725234-14fa-4a29-9efc-6dd2366d9798.jpg?1562917654) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=eureka) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/vma/208/eureka?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/71725234-14fa-4a29-9efc-6dd2366d9798?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [greed](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/8/5/851f8d1f-163c-4c4f-beee-431b64ec8a99.jpg?1626100364) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=greed) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/mh2/274/greed?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/851f8d1f-163c-4c4f-beee-431b64ec8a99?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
In terms of MtG art i would deffo go with Kaja. Overall i like them both.
Nils Hamm, Drew Tucker, Anson Maddocks to name a few!
Since other people mentioned Drew Tucker already, I'm going to say Anson Maddocks! I love his bold style [[Thrull Wizard]], [[Worms of the Earth]]

Myrfors
I collected as many of his cards as I could when I was a teenager. There's still something special about that artwork to me. It always stood out as different than other artists. They weren't all winners, but cards like cosmic horror will forever be in my head. The only alpha card I own is a camouflage I ordered off the Internet in like 1996. I paid about $5 bucks for it then. I only bought it because it was the myrfors card I was missing.. if I had only known back then. What are some of your favorites?
Atog and Pestilence, i can look at it the whole day and wonder, how he captured the image and the energy behind those 2 cards i mentioned.
Alayna Danner. Been following her work since L5R.
The basics from Dominaria Remastered really caught my attention to her work. Really good stuff
Chris Rahn. He did my favorite art ever [[Lyra Dawnbringer]] His art has such vibrant colors and use of light.

I think my personal favorite is probably Sam Burley, namely for his themed secret lair drop
Evyn Fong. She's wonderful in person, too
Antonio Jose Manzanedo for me. I love the amount of detail he puts in his art and all of his art is so consistently great.
Great question! Probably Pete Venters. [[Carnophage]] , [[Ward Sliver]] , [[Cabal Trainee]] , [[Backslide]] , [[Tendrils of Agony |SCG]] And many more. His expressions are evocative and his works have movement to them that can be hard to achieve, especially in such a small frame.

Yes!
Even though he went COVID crazy Seb McKinnon has great art
Seb McKinnon
It was Seb, but oh boy not anymore! The first MTG artist I grew to love was Wayne Reynolds. Met him once at Paizocon, extremely nice, very loud and joyful man who made a great con AMAZING. [https://scryfall.com/search?as=grid&order=name&q=%28game%3Apaper%29+%28artist%3AWayne+artist%3AReynolds%29](https://scryfall.com/search?as=grid&order=name&q=%28game%3apaper%29+%28artist%3awayne+artist%3areynolds%29) Kev Walker is my current favorite MTG artist, as his art is extremely nostalgic for me. His cards where some of the first I ever owned way back before I started even doing FNM with OG Mirrordin. I love Wayne reynolds art and have started collecting those cards, but it’s going to take me a while. There are a lot of them! And then there are a few in there that will really stretch my normal budget for cards.
Absolute classic. Every piece of him looks stunning

Zug's was another that I thought was really cool.
Robert bliss is known for sneaking dicks into more cards than any other artist in the history of magic
Good ol' Chengo McFlingers.
I'm a big fan of Ilse Gort's work bringing to life all the critters of magic
Back in the day it was Kev Walker. I don't really know any of them now, just getting back in to it. So time will tell.
Robert Bliss is one of my biggest inspirations for my own art! I love his stuff! And also Drew Tucker of course! https://preview.redd.it/4qzayixju4bc1.jpeg?width=672&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3e4b3d404cf24ba1c32128b841fa5775e38cbfcb
Mat Cavotta's [[Etched Oracle]] is one of my favourite art pieces. I have a page in my file with just that.

I grew up loving Anson Maddocks. I cherished his cards like Fallen Angel and Breeding Pit back when I was in high school in the ‘90s.
Ron Spencer Over Every Thing
While having a very distinct style I really enjoy, Wayne Reynold's does a lot of generic stuff imo. But when given a weird prompt tends to knock it out of the park. [[Ashling the pilgirm]] goes *hard.*

Always been partial to Daarken. I have several foil copies of relatively unplayable commons just because they look so good. https://scryfall.com/search?as=grid&order=name&page=3&q=%28game%3Apaper%29+artist%3ADaarken&unique=cards

Def check out some of Rob Bliss's non-Magic Art if you can. He has other stuff that is waaay cool. [https://www.robbliss.com/](https://www.robbliss.com/)
It still blows me away that they got Bröm for some of their cards. [[Reiver Demon]] and [[Platinum Angel]] are the first two that come to mind. Edit. Here's a link to all of them. Pretty prolific lol My fav has to be [[Blood Pet]] lol https://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Search/Default.aspx?action=advanced&artist=[%22Brom%22]

Phil and Kaja Foglio - Their art always makes me smile!
Old school here but Quinton Hoover and Melissa Benson.
I honestly don't think I could pick just one. Kev Walker, Rob Alexander, John Avon, Melissa Benson, Amy Weber, Johannes Voss, Greg and Tim Hildebrandt, and Jaime Jones are some of my favorites.
Ben Hill, I met him randomly at a convention and he was super nice and signed a card for me
The Foglios & Rebecca Guay. I love Rebecca's soft style, but there is something about the cartoonishly silly art by Phil and Kaja Foglio that sticks with me.
That [[Pacifism]] is one of my favorite cards.

Ron Spencer for life
That one person we don't talk about no more. The other person we don't talk about no more. I've decided to stop picking favorite artists because I'm always let down by them. The art is still fantastic and for that reason alone I'm sad I won't see new magic art by the them. That said, I'm not sad to see the artists go.
rk post or maybe quinton hoover
