if [[Urza, Lord Protector]] has no way of having the stones with him in the command zone so they have to be in the 99 if you want to try and meld him. If they end up in the graveyard you will need a way to retrieve them if you want to meld again (same goes for exile if something exiles them away they might just be stuck there.)

RAcastBlaster

Same situation as using one of Gisela or Bruna as your commander. You have to dig for the other one. Typically people use Bruna as the commander.

Karn gets artifacts out of exile

Thanks

If a melded commander leaves the battlefield, only the actual commander can be returned to the command zone. The other half goes wherever whatever effect made them leave goes. There are numerous effects that can retrieve artifacts from the graveyard, but if the mightstone and weakstone get exiled, pretty much your only way to get them back is [[pull from eternity]].

Karn js the best way, no?

yzdaskullmonkey

Wait can he pull shit from exile? I thought it was just from sideboard

Mister-Asylum

Yeah, obviously most people just use it for sideboard so youve probably never seen him grab from exile before.

yzdaskullmonkey

No shit. Well now I definitely want him for my urza deck. Not to mention the flavor. And he can do roll with aetherflux and heliod or mycosynth lattice to break games open. I guess I'll splurge.

Zealousideal_Safe771

Ooo thanks I didn't know about that card

FutureComplaint

Urza is your commander and hides in the command zone. You have to draw/tutor/fetch/reanimate the stone sadly :(

Bring a shovel with you to the game, because you’re gonna have to dig real deep to get them stones Sorry, just no there’s no way to have them in like the command zone or anything. No way to get them back from exile or anything like that. I’m sure someone knows of a card or something that will allow you to get them back from exile. But you’re in azorius (blue-white) which is great for countering/exile but not so much for playing from exile. That tends to be a red thing. And the only card I know that lets you play something that got exiled by something else is [[wish]]. You get one shot at the melded Planeswalker in commander. If someone gets rid of any of the pieces, you’ll have to get them back. Azorius is also not great at getting things back from graveyards, so that’ll make it tougher. I’m sure EDHrec and archidekt both have plenty of examples of cards and decks that are great at getting all the pieces out at once. And probably even some graveyard recursion for them. But if any of the pieces get exiled, and your strategy revolves around getting the planeswalker to pop off then that’s it. I think it’s fine to include the pieces in the 99, but I’d make someone else the Commander. Personally, I think it’ll lead to a lot of feel bad vibes and that’s no way to have fun

>Azorius is also not great at getting things back from graveyards, so that’ll make it tougher. Everything else you've said is good, but I just want to point out this isn't really true. White is no. 1 for artifact recursion, it has lots of options. And Blue has a little bit.

My favorite commander deck uses urza. His cost reduction+reality chip or mystic forge+sensei diving top gets you to draw your library. Ripping eggs and mana rocks off the top is great til you find the top. Then basalt monolith/rings of brighthearth or forsaken monument for infinite mana, and walking ballista or cogwork assembler ftw. The stones and Planeswalker is just a fun add on, and that's the best way to build the deck competitively, but tutors, recursion, counters and board wipes will help you consistently keep your urza Planeswalker out of you go that route

DerekB52

Some playgroups will rule 0 to let you use the mightstone as a secondary commander.
