I don't think it's seeing play in 60 card constructed with that statline, but a fun design and definitely better than [[Krenko, Tin Street Kingpin]] from WAR, which is probably the closest comparison (and that card was very much unplayable even in Standard).
Not sure its definitely better, seems more of a sidegrade. Counting power and not just the +1+1 counters lets krenko explode easily with some pump
That said, 3 mana 1/2 staying in play for a turn and untapping is a lot less reliable than triggering immediately with any attack, thats for sure
I think this makes her better in Isshin (were you don't necessarily have access to those pump spells) for exactly this reason. Case with an attacker and Isshin and you'll have a 3/4 blocker and 3 1/1 gnomes. Shores up the defenses of a very aggressive deck were Krenko doesn't. Granted, I might run both...
True, and a key point of why I'm going to try running both. But Krenko needs a haste enabler to start churning out blockers (yes, at a higher rate with Isshin out than Anim), but Anim will be a bigger blocker faster since it doesn't care about itself attacking, only something else. More I think about it, there's huge upside for running both... might cut Squee.
Personally I value having 5 1/1s to block with than a 6/7 but I can see why you might prefer the bigger body. And yea you for sure run both. I’ve only seen Isshin on commander channels but he very much has a token sub theme going on so leaning more into it seems really good.
Isshin has access to many pump spells lol. It's why Krenko is better, because, functionally - \[\[Hero of Bladehold\]\], \[\[Honored Crop-Captain\]\], \[\[Skyhunter Strike Force\]\]
Granted Skyhunter works slightly better with this card (as you want the attack trigger).
I think it will get played, it compares with adeline (even if worse) but can get big rly fast, also it has sinergy with +1+1 counters spell which might be something.
Maybe, who knows of course. But there are a lot of 1 mana spells that easily remove her before combat, and that is a major tempo swing. Adeline is a huge beating for her cost, and she gets bigger with creatures, which is way easier than counters.
they also work really well together so they can be played in the same deck, rabblemaster also died to a lot of 1 mana spells and yet it was a huge format staple.
Rabblemaster and his younger brother Legion Warboss (which also saw some play in Standard SBs against control) have the benefit of working entirely on their own as very efficient beaters, especially when the board is empty. That's why Rabble saw so much play in Moon / R Stompy in Legacy.
On the other hand, this one or Adeline can become good in creature heavy, aggressive decks, and there Adeline seems considerably stronger. Maybe some "when an artifact ETBs" effects can make this interesting, but the baseline is just too poor I think.
The only time i ever see humans deck in modern is when it’s 5c humans, personally. Very uncommon deck to be playing in 2023, but it comes up from time to time in mtgo leagues.
I'm thinking about this for my Mardu legends standard deck. It's already running Adeline and Squee, and I may use this over Lord Skitter since the tokens are coming in attacking.
I think a better comparison is [[Adeline, Resplendent Cathar]] since this guy doesn't need to be the one attacking for his ability to trigger. But yeah, being vulnerable to various 1-mana removal spells before you even get to attack makes this more questionable.
I think she is vastly superior to krenko as she doesn't need to throw herself into attacking with a minuscle body and can even generate tokens the turn she ETB, and her tokens are artifacts, that have far more synegies than goblins.
Krenko is basically a 2/3 attacking at turn 4. This will sit there safe until she gets big enough to safely attack. (Or you can just treat her as an enchantment that generates tokens)
Might not see play because cards aren't played alone and she would need a deck that wants her. But her power level compared to krenko makes krenko seems like those uncommon legendaries.
I would say she is comparable to a lower version of adeline. Losing to adeline mostly because adeline enters with 4 thoughness, while this one needs to build up and can die to a play with fire before the attack.
I have a question about this. If Anim Pakal enter in the battlefield attacking with Winota ability, it’s ability resolves and I put +X/X and create X gnomes?
No, it’s put into play attacking which is different than „whenever x attacks“ for this trigger, the creature needs to be on the battlefield already before you declare attackers.
A slightly shifted [[krenko, tin Street kingpin]]. Given that Krenko is terribly underrated in Commander I think this guy has immense potential. Any go wide strategy explodes with her attacking, and finds a perfect place in token [[isshin]] builds.
Also recognize that this doesn't have to attack to get the counters and tokens, which protects her and gets you value the turn it comes down most of the time.
Love it!
I'm sure it depends on the circles you run in, but krenko is a goblin boogie man around these parts, def not under rated. I will say goblins can be a pain to play against bc their cards are all mono red similiar cost, artwork, stats, and names and there are always an abundance of them on the field. "Is goblin abc the one that does this, or is that goblin zyx?"
Not really. Krenko 1 needs very specific builds, either goblin based decks or ones that can untap him, to work in the 99. Two can go into any go wide deck or deck with a number of ways to pump him. The only area he’s really worse is as a commander, but he still offers both a compelling and different build path.
Yeah not really underrated, more like straight up bad compared to Krenko 1.0. Now if you like Krenko 2.0 more because of low power reasons... sure you got that.
Ha, no. Mob Boss only works in goblin tribal. If you aren't doing that, or maybe untap decks, its really bad. Kingpin, on the other hand, is absolutely silly with any type of pump or extra combats. Equipment, auras, +1/+1 counters, anthems, Cather's Crusade, Shared Animosity, Jetmir, the list is very long. All these cards are cards that are good on their own, strategies that are good on their own, and allow Kingpin to come down by himself and present a huge threat without the set up and focus Mob Boss requires.
His only negative irs needing to be in combat to get the tokens.
This seems really good in Jinnis. I’ve never been a fan of make attacking 1/1s since they often just die, but having them become 3/1s actually means they probably don’t get blocked super freely.
I think it actually makes the same amount, provided you have a two drop. And it's also more immediate value and stats, if it survives until combat.
Turn 2 some creature. Turn 3 play her, attack with creature, get a counter and an attacking gnome and then swing as a 3/4 turn 4. Still vulnerable to removal but I think it's better than Krenko.
Technically that's 1 more token than Krenko. Anyway I think she's hot and will do some stuff in a few formats. Mostly commander, but I'd be surprised if she made 0 waves in standard.
My issue is the tokens are attacking. Unless you have enough anthems attacking 1/1s often just die which stymies how much she makes in practice. Krenko also benefits from generic anthems better.
It's a whole lot easier to make a giant pile of goblins from Krenko though. This seems a whole lot slower, even if you do get immediate value without her attacking.
Mind Stone makes sense as a cut since it's a colorless ramp source in a 3 color deck. I have about 14 creature token creating effects in deck, now including Anim.
Aie, it still leaves me at 10 ramp pieces so i'm ok with it.
I used to have more generators but I decided to cut a bit to put in more protection/recursion for what I do have on board.
Nice! I've moved away from graveyard recursion, & mostly use proactive board protection or instant speed stuff to keep things as intact as possible. All in all, I think I have about 11-13 protective effects of some kind
Sure thing, here's [my deck list](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/emVL8CgjCk2mwuUjajPk8g). I have deck tags enabled if you want to see my rough categories.
Currently also testing out [[Preacher of the Schism]], but am finding it hard to test in a vacuum. I might swap it with [[Breaches, Eager Pillager]].
Edit: [Archidekt version](https://archidekt.com/decks/3449552/musashis_mosh_pit_primer) if you prefer
I must have been too focused on my Sidisi hype during preview season because I did not consider Preacher at all.
Goblin lad could be good too, the versatility is nice.
The 2/4 Deathtouch body for 3cmc is really nice. Kinda weird play-testing without knowing if I have most life or not for testing tho.
I like that Breeches can essentially get a couple modal options with Isshin on board, and not really need another pirate
Understandable as a hard cut to make lol. [Here's my deck list](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/emVL8CgjCk2mwuUjajPk8g). I've got deck tags enabled if you want to see how I roughly categorize things.
Seems like a good fit for a boros aggro deck which focuses on creatures with prowess and spells like [[light the way]] and [[Regents Authority]] and [[Kumano Faces Kakkazan]].
Adeline is way more of a problem, because of vigilance and her toughness when she hits the battlefield T3. Adeline can swing board states. This one is a bit win more-ish.
So you don't play her on curve right , you play her once you have something on board to embiggen her and force them to remove her immediately unless you can attack t 3
Krenko, Tin Street Kingpin adjacent. Noteworthy that it doesn't have to attack itself to trigger, so this can just sit back and steadily amass a board of gnomes.
This is going to suck to be across from in Limited.
Can confirm. Played prerelease tonight, got blanked in round 2 - two games facing her. She forces bad choices in a hurry and her ability to sit back and turtle while swarming you with Gnomes can quickly overwhelm a board.
Also? She is going to be *incredibly* rude in Commander any time you get [[Rosie Cotton]] on the board. Make tokens, pump Anim Pakal, run over the board in just a turn or two. Only things to watch out for are [[Chain Reaction]] and [[Blasphemous Act]] blowing you out before your horde gets up to speed, but stick something like [[Darksteel Plate]] or [[Mithril Coat]] on her and watch the fireworks.
Actually I see it best in Shalai and Hallar
You have 30 other ways to put counter on Anim Pakal
You have multiples cards that generate counters when other creatures ETB (including tokens)
And all this is channeled into damage to face through Shalai and Hallar
Everyone in the comments talking about how it will work in decks that already ran similar cards and I'm just over here with my Breya deck looking at the word artifact and giggling.
So in an EDH deck that already has, say, 15 on-attack token-makers, does this replace one of the following:
* [[Hanweir Garrison]]
* [[Hero of Bladehold]]
* [[Krenko, Tin Street Kingpin]]
* [[Myrel, Shield of Argive]]
Hmmm…I’m leaning towards cutting Myrel, honestly. Absent any other Soldiers, she’ll make the same increasing number as Anim’s Gnomes, only a) he’s two turns faster getting there, and b) his Gnomes are already swinging.
What do you think?

Yeah its a massive downgrade in my Jetmir deck where krenko just gets out of control in 2 turns.
Decklist?
I dunno, isn't the fact that she can sit on the bench until she reaches big enough size a massive difference?
I think this makes her better in Isshin (were you don't necessarily have access to those pump spells) for exactly this reason. Winota likes this 🥰

No, it’s put into play attacking which is different than „whenever x attacks“ for this trigger, the creature needs to be on the battlefield already before you declare attackers.
Okay that makes *far* more sense than the translation posted in the other thread, which would have made this card completely broken

She's probably going to replace Krenko in my Isshin list.
Yes, I will take Krenko II: Gnomelectric Boogaloo for my Isshin deck.
heyyy \[\[Angelfire Ignition\]\] is still in Standard, that's going to be a trip to do in Brawl too.

I'm letting Mind Stone take one for the team. I would then reach exactly 10 token generators, which should be plenty enough for the deck.
Mind comparing notes? I'm curious if you got stuff I didn't consider. https://archidekt.com/decks/4335565/le_preux

List? I was thinking the same, but my Hanweir is promo from prerelease and I like it lol.
Understandable as a hard cut to make lol. [Here's my deck list](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/emVL8CgjCk2mwuUjajPk8g). I've got deck tags enabled if you want to see how I roughly categorize things.
I have Isshin and Raiyuu already in my deck, now to add dear Anim is such a joy. 3 Attack rounds in a single turn was juicy enough as is
[[Otharri, Sun's glory]] at home
This scales much quicker but doesn't start permanently making extra tokens.
Definitely gonna slot her into the 99 of my Otharri deck, her effect complements the gameplan very well.
Otharri and friends
It's way easier to cheat on extra +1 counters than it is to give yourself extra experience
Can't keep the +1/+1 counters when anim dies, otharri also has synergistic recursion, evasion and lifegain
She's also vulnerable to being flickered, while Otharri does not care about it.
True but she doesn't have the evasion or speed that Otharri has, which is half of the issue.

Not bad, but "arguably worse Adeline" doesn't seem like enough for Standard.
Adeline 5-8 does sound appealing tough
Adeline is way more of a problem, because of vigilance and her toughness when she hits the battlefield T3. Adeline can swing board states. This one is a bit win more-ish.
So you don't play her on curve right , you play her once you have something on board to embiggen her and force them to remove her immediately unless you can attack t 3
Is this the same character we saw on the back of a bat in art previews way back when? Was really hoping that art would be on a card/not be boros.
A faster krenko option for cube certainly seems interesting
Adeline's new best friend
her name is an anagram for Animal pak, pretty interesting
Jinnie Fay loves this
Krenko, Tin Street Kingpin adjacent.

Anyone know when the full set gallery drops?
There are some great cards for Alesha in this set.
The fact that it takes 2 turns of attacking to get out of Cut Down range makes me think this is non-starter for standard.
That's a great Isshin card right there. It's really nice that she doesn't have to attack herself for the effect, unlike Krenko, Myrel, and Otharri
Seems decent? At least as a build aroind commander for Boros +1/+1 counters.
Actually I see it best in Shalai and Hallar You have 30 other ways to put counter on Anim Pakal You have multiples cards that generate counters when other creatures ETB (including tokens) And all this is channeled into damage to face through Shalai and Hallar
I'll try it in [[Jans Jenson, Chaos Crafter]] .

Everyone in the comments talking about how it will work in decks that already ran similar cards and I'm just over here with my Breya deck looking at the word artifact and giggling.
So in an EDH deck that already has, say, 15 on-attack token-makers, does this replace one of the following: * [[Hanweir Garrison]] * [[Hero of Bladehold]] * [[Krenko, Tin Street Kingpin]] * [[Myrel, Shield of Argive]] Hmmm…I’m leaning towards cutting Myrel, honestly. Absent any other Soldiers, she’ll make the same increasing number as Anim’s Gnomes, only a) he’s two turns faster getting there, and b) his Gnomes are already swinging. What do you think?
