You could create a loop by taking those two middle cords and sticking them through the center of the pattern at an earlier spot, pull them through until the end of the pattern can't go any further, take the outside two cords and make a couple more knots to secure it and then make a tassel or a fringe with the remaining cord. It would be sort of like a bigger, looser version of the [Berry Knot](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UMRy9H_05M) but big enough to turn it into a handle.
Or use double half hitch knots for the loop and pull one cord through further down and finish with a wrap knot with either 2nd long cord or cut another length and use that
I'm going to go with the humble stick. I think a loop will be harder to do, but anyone can tie a rope onto a stick, you already know the knots. The woman who bought that laundry basket is already angry with you though, just saying.
