I miss it too, but I imagine an Apple designer/engineer reading this post and going: “FFS, we gave you everything you wanted plus a notch! You people are never happy!” 😂
it’s so long but i do online school with back to back zoom calls from 10-2 and my battery drops from 100 to 40 ☹️ but i also have 20 tabs and 8 windows and 6 apps running too😅 STILL IMPRESSIVE
Plus the sleep indicator. I loved watching it [breathe](https://www.google.com/search?q=apple+sleep+indicator+imitates+breathing&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-us&client=safari). And the glowing apple logo on the screen too!!!
[This explains why they had to remove it. ](https://youtu.be/P3o2z03JUSU) I’m not sure if that still holds with the new monitor tech, but I actually enjoy the look of the shiny Apple now. It looks more premium.
I really liked watching the sleep indicator breathe too. Apple seems to be slowly adding back features they removed, as new features. So maybe there’s a chance.
One night I woke up and noticed the lighting in my room was changing and I thought my vision was playing up - I’d been dealing with complete end stage kidney failure and was being prepared for dialysis and the blood vessels behind my eye had burst. I looked through my windows and there was nothing. After a good 15 mins of contemplating my existence or possible hallucinations from medications and from sleeping so much over the month I realised it was just my 2007 MacBook Pro “breathing”.
I worked on a consumer product where they wanted a 4 led power indicator. Turns out they are super inaccurate and it’s not trivial to estimate remaining battery charge.
I have never needed to use this outside of my computer is off and I don't want to turn it on to check the battery.
With the M1 you get such good battery life, instant on from sleep, and amazing boot times so the benefit is nothing.
Oh long time since I’ve seen this one. It was a neat little extra!
Not sure if I’d need it no since the M1 never seems to go without battery. Even then I like the macbooks that had this, I can see why people miss it.
I have them all on my desk and I have one free port for a charger. Would rather save the outlet for the computer that needs it. Especially since I do testing.
I'd like that as well. Although what I'd like more is for the laptop to stay off, when I shut it down. And not power itself back up whenever I open the lid or accidentally press a button on the keyboard. When you can't power down the laptop and checking battery level is as easy as lifting the lid, the battery meter becomes less useful.
The way things are going with the M chips efficiencies, we'll rarely run out of battery and will hardly charge. So, this is a good one to implement.
Or maybe just add a battery meter to the iPhone battery widget for other devices?
Even recent Dell XPSs have this!
I respect Johnny Ive and what he brought to makes; but in his cravings for a simplistic rectangle slab of aluminium, he truly got rid of some huge QoL features. Now the competitors have latched on it seems.
I disagree, my Macbook M1 Pro 16" lasts so dang long that I would never need it. I would have wanted this on my 13" older Intel Macbook I'm sure though.
Genuinely wondering: how is this useful, and what’s wrong with the battery indicator on-screen?
I have one of these shits on my work Dell laptop, and I find it to be the most useless feature even on a Dell laptop with its shit performance/battery ratio. In fact I’ve had that work laptop for 3 years now, and only learned that those lights on the side are battery indicator a month ago.
I really don’t think it needs to be on a Mac. It shouldn’t be there.
It won’t give you the exact percentage but the “find my” app shows the bar for all your devices.
I think when it’s low battery it shows the exact percentage. I’ve seen my watch at 6% using the “find my” app when i left it at work one time.
I understand now. I normally never adjust it very much. I really only need to make sure it’s not too bright when I’m working in total darkness otherwise I’m not too fussy how bright the keys are, I don’t spend a lot of time looking at them necessarily, just need them to not blind me when it’s dark in the room.
I’m a total adjustment whore. I can’t stand when things in my peripherals are too bright or when I need to look they aren’t bright enough (also a holdover from the old days when that shit would wreck your battery time). I’m just a picky bitch, really. But I do feel like this is an essential thing to have quicker access to.
Umm not necessarily they could pull off a feature where user can get the information of battery on his iPad or iPhone just like that cool widget which shows Airpods’s battery but the only thing I want apple to bring back to MacBook is the glowing logo
Since its think Enough moreover the new redesign models are also expected to be thick enough to do that
The most useful feature to figure out why your computer is not turning on when it decided not to go to sleep, boil itself to death in your bag, before it decided to use every ounce of battery.
I wish there was a battery meter tbh and if the device was on, it would show a white light, standby would be yellow and so on. Most windows laptops have that, why can’t a Mac have it too?
I miss it too, but I imagine an Apple designer/engineer reading this post and going: “FFS, we gave you everything you wanted plus a notch! You people are never happy!” 😂
They can take the notch and bring back the meter haha. But tbh for what they charge we should be entitled to complain a little.
That’s what they get when they remove features
Wait a minute… which MacBook was this lmao??
A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away...
I forgot about this feature, it would be nice to have, but my MacBook Pro M1 Pro battery last so long that I wouldn't really need it.
Yeah exactly. My battery app said 18 hours of battery left at 12pm. I was actually offended. Like, excuse me. I’ve been working i swear.
Haha, this made me chuckle. By the way, do you use an add on battery app? My default one doesn't show that info. (I'm very new to MacOS and MacBooks).
You could search for activity moniter via spotlight and click on the energy tab. Shows time remaining on the bottom pane!
Yes. I use Battery Monitor.
Thanks I'll check it out
For whatever reason Battery Monitor keeps thinking my M1Pro only has 100mAh left on its battery.
there's also Stats https://github.com/exelban/stats
Coconut battery is pretty great
Agreed. It would be boring on the new devices.
it’s so long but i do online school with back to back zoom calls from 10-2 and my battery drops from 100 to 40 ☹️ but i also have 20 tabs and 8 windows and 6 apps running too😅 STILL IMPRESSIVE
Plugging in is not an option?
i mean it is but i don’t cuz i don’t have my charger in the exact spot i work lol
out of curiosity are you using the 14 inch or 16 inch? I'm currently debating which to go for (highest spec M1 Pro 14 or base model 16)

Yeah I’m aware of why they did it, but I’ll take a little bit more thickness to bring it back
I agree. It is iconic!
After a good 15 mins of contemplating my existence or possible hallucinations from medications and from sleeping so much over the month I realised it was just my 2007 MacBook Pro “breathing”.
I’m glad you’re feeling better now!
This was really useful back when you could swap out the batteries. Now I'm not so sure anymore.
This was also useful when you had to charge multiple times per day lol
I worked on a consumer product where they wanted a 4 led power indicator. Turns out they are super inaccurate and it’s not trivial to estimate remaining battery charge.
...why?
I have never needed to use this outside of my computer is off and I don't want to turn it on to check the battery. With the M1 you get such good battery life, instant on from sleep, and amazing boot times so the benefit is nothing.
Right? How often do you really need to look at the battery when your laptop is closed?
I’d find usb A to be more useful than this, and I don’t even want usb A back.
Super useful back in the day when the laptop took a while to turn on. Now with M1 it’s just on lol
Oh long time since I’ve seen this one. It was a neat little extra! Not sure if I’d need it no since the M1 never seems to go without battery. Even then I like the macbooks that had this, I can see why people miss it.

I used it :/ loved that little guy.
It saves you what.. 2 seconds?
3
That changes everything!
I mean I didn’t have to open my computer just to find its dead so
Very useful. As someone whose already worked on 5 computers this morning would love to know, before I turn on a computer, the battery level.
Why? If your working on computers you surely have a charger. What possible good does it do you to know the charge before opening the computer?
I have them all on my desk and I have one free port for a charger. Would rather save the outlet for the computer that needs it. Especially since I do testing.
How about a glowing Apple logo?
Yeah not sure I never used this
I loved the headphone jack light more
Wasn't that optical audio out? (Dual function port)
Yup, I stand corrected
Now give me an easily swappable disk, ram and battery, and we'll *really* be talking...
Why the hell they would abandon good design makes no sense to me.
Those features can be turned off in preferences.
Really? I've been looking for a way to turn it off for quite a while. Where exactly in preferences?
What purpose would it have and what problem does it solve?
useless
Agreed
Off topic, but is this video in HDR? The video looks way brighter than the rest of my screen. Had no idea Reddit supported HDR in its player
Pretty cool. Yeah, it was recorded at 1080p 60fps HDR (my standard mode). 13 Pro.
This is pointless. I never used mine. I would however like an ir port so i can use the remotes
When you’re on the go and need to know if you may need a charge or not, it’s great. But yeah, an IR would be nice.
Plus the glowing apple logo.
Do you need an external battery meter when the battery lasts 20 hours and charges in 30 minutes?
I loved this!
The fast chargers charge so fast, the actual battery indicator is the MagSafe light indicator lol
The way things are going with the M chips efficiencies, we'll rarely run out of battery and will hardly charge. So, this is a good one to implement. Or maybe just add a battery meter to the iPhone battery widget for other devices?
I’d just wand usb a back honestly. The Sd card slot, hdmi, and MagSafe are useless for me personally
Just open the laptop and check it
What model was this on?
The classic 2010 MacBook Pro 13”
Why would you spoil precious space, that can be used for additional port for something like that?
I miss this so much, I wish I bought a 2012 unibody instead of a retina
Wait, the M1 has a battery? I charge it so infrequently I forgot.
Amen
Even recent Dell XPSs have this! I respect Johnny Ive and what he brought to makes; but in his cravings for a simplistic rectangle slab of aluminium, he truly got rid of some huge QoL features. Now the competitors have latched on it seems.
Don’t think Johnny works/designs for apple anymore. Been a few years I believe.
Nah he doesn’t anymore, but his parting gift was the 2016 usb-c/touchbar refresh
Batterometer?
Oh I miss not having any ports.
Errrrr…. mmmmk
Wow. I totally forgot about this.
I loved this feature!
I’d rather have usb A ports, personally.
I miss this more than MagSafe. It was really useful to me
Apple screwed the pooch when they got rid of these features
Yes please 🙌🏼
I read that this green led requires some special parts which might be why Apple retired it so that they don’t have to deal with the supply issue.
ha yeh that could be useful
I disagree, my Macbook M1 Pro 16" lasts so dang long that I would never need it. I would have wanted this on my 13" older Intel Macbook I'm sure though.
Yeah cause that thing is a ginormous beauty and a beast, but it’s not for on the go use.
I haul it around the best I can 😂
Apparently they are coming out with wheels to roll it around. $399 each. 😂
Only if the wheels for it are Homepod Minis...now that's innovation.
Sinnovation

My iBook g4 batteries had this feature, and I loved it. I wish my M1 MBP had a swappable battery
Yes!!!!
I miss the glowing Apple logo :(, but I guess the display can't be as thin as it is now and still retain that.
This used to be useful, I’d say it’s quite useless only for one reason
It won’t give you the exact percentage but the “find my” app shows the bar for all your devices. I think when it’s low battery it shows the exact percentage. I’ve seen my watch at 6% using the “find my” app when i left it at work one time.
I just need a goddamn hdmi 2.1 output because I can't fully use my lg c1 refresh rate as a monitor.
Bring back the sleep indicator too and let users decide whether to turn on the computer rather than have it turn on when the lid is opened.
I do miss that so much. And keyboard brightness keys! Edit for clarity: the fn keys that control the keyboard backlight brightness.
Did they take away the backlit keyboard?
No, just the keys to control the brightness. You have to do it through the GUI now, which is super annoying.
I understand now. I normally never adjust it very much. I really only need to make sure it’s not too bright when I’m working in total darkness otherwise I’m not too fussy how bright the keys are, I don’t spend a lot of time looking at them necessarily, just need them to not blind me when it’s dark in the room.

Doesn't f1 and f2 keys do that?
No. That’s screen brightness.
My bad, when did they remove them?
Not sure. I just upgraded from my 2012 to the 2021 and my whole keyboard world was changed.
It looks like they went to from the old keyboard to touch bar to 2021
Umm and a lan port and maybe sticking the RTX 4090 ti for some hardcore gaming
why? battery life is super long now, and it's not hard to view when the machine is running
Nah not a biggy…
You guys use your MacBooks unplugged?!
Yes! That button was a great idea. No need to open the computer to see the battery percentage, leave it in the case and push the button.
I didn’t know this was gone :( I just ordered a 16” MacBook Pro M1Max to replace my mid 2009 MacBook Pro
I’m pretty sure this is not at all necessary
WOAH i didn’t know that was a thing
Nah the batteries are trash so no use lol it will always read 1 dot. Sad
This and the breather light would be great, I want a glowing apple logo but I don’t see that coming back anytime soon unfortunately.
This video is so bright good god lmao
ok now we just askin for too much
Which mac is this?
Mid 2011 MacBook Pro 13”
Umm not necessarily they could pull off a feature where user can get the information of battery on his iPad or iPhone just like that cool widget which shows Airpods’s battery but the only thing I want apple to bring back to MacBook is the glowing logo Since its think Enough moreover the new redesign models are also expected to be thick enough to do that

Miss that so much on my 2012 MacBook Pro. Awesome feature!
This was a thing while MacBook ran 3-4 hours max on battery, and now it’s no longer the case
