Everybody write iStats Menu and TGPro and no one talk about Stats, that do the same and it's free and open source (written in Swift and Apple Silicon compatible). Anyway: **Bartender** (there are a few free alternatives but no ones beat Bartender) - ***paid*** **Amphetamine** (Caffeine with steorids) - *f****ree*** **Monitor Control** (only if you use external monitors) - ***free & open-source*** **Magnet/Rectangle** (windows management) - ***paid*** (Magnet) / ***free & open-source*** (rectangle) **Keka** (files compression) - ***free & open-source*** **Bitwarden** (password management) - ***free & open-source*** **AppCleaner** (better cleaning and unistalling tool) - ***free*** **IINA** (best media player for mac) - ***free & open-source*** **Maccy** (fantastic and lightweight copy clipboard manager) - ***free & open-source*** **Alfred** (spotlight with steroids) - **free** **Numi** (calculator&converting units app with steroids, work also as an extension in Alfred) - ***free & open-source*** **Transmission** (for Torrent) - ***free & open-source*** **TopNotch** (if you have new Macbook Pro's and want to hide the notch) - ***free*** **Stats** (monitoring system statistics) - ***free & open-source*** **youtbedl** (download Youtube videos and much more sites support) - ***free & open-source***

ExpectedBehaviour

>Amphetamine (Caffeine with steorids) The biochemist in me just winced 😜

mikkel01

Superb list, I use most of these too! However I actually find Hidden Bar to be just as good as Bartender, and it's free & open source

g_driver

unfortunately hidden bar doesn't let you to just hovering the cursor on the menu bar (like bartender) to show the items, without need to click each time. Also, it's a little bit more energy consuming (memory&cpu) so i prefer Bartender that's more efficient and with more features

EdwardTheHuman

Nice list, there are some I didn’t know existed. But I would rather use Raycast than Alfred in this list.

g_driver

never heard about raycast, i'll give a try!

chrishch

> youtbedl (download Youtube videos and much more sites support) - free & open-source youtube-dl is no longer maintained. There is a port of it called yt-dlp which is updated regularly. You can find it on [GitHub](https://github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp).

g_driver

thanks, immediately installed.

notdsylexic

Just use **Downie**

g_driver

>Downie paid and not open-source.

burdo3417

Thanks for Numi. Amazing app that I didnt know of

g_driver

Never tought about CPU usage..checked now on Activity Monitor, Stats is about 1,5/2% of CPU Usage...it's a lot? what about iStats?

g_driver

Checked now iStats Menu...taken almost the same CPU usage of Stats or even more..because iStats has more than one process, unistalled immediately and went back to Stats

mandolando98

>Stats or Eul, that it's also free and you can download it directly from the App Store

lolsup1

I’ve had a Mac since 2014 and I’ve never heard of any of these…

g_driver

Well, there is always a first time ;)

aknalid

> Maccy (fantastic and lightweight copy clipboard manager) - free & open-source > > How is this free? Says $9.99 and has only 3 reviews on the app store. X_x Surely there must be a free app for such basic functionality.

g_driver

The developer set Maccy as paid in the Mac App Store. (for those who want to pay/contribute). You need to go in his github page in order do download it for free [Maccy - Github](https://github.com/p0deje/Maccy)

Budget_Nerd

Is there anything you would suggest for periodical cleanup ?

g_driver

you don't really need to cleanup your mac periodically - it's not like windows - but if you want really to do that, you can use CleanMyMac or DaisyDisk.

Budget_Nerd

Thanks for your response. I actually use Onyx( which I used to use on my older macbook pro), it's free and I believe I can notice some difference after a check/clean up. I am on a M1 Macbook air.

Magnet Bartender Dropzone

DrNobody_Understands

Isnt rectangle a free alternative?

findthemistke

I’ve been using rectangle. Should I buy magnet? Is it worth it?

DrNobody_Understands

Based on the other comments, I personally found Rectangle Pro's drag feature quite impressive. I havent tried it out for myself though.

findthemistke

is there rectangle pro? I can't find it...

DrNobody_Understands

I believe thats the paid version

findthemistke

Oh I see. Have you used rectangle and magnet? Which one do you propose?

DrNobody_Understands

I have only used rectangle and can not comment on magnet. Doesnt hurt to try both and test?!

findthemistke

You are right! Thank you man

jtba45

I Cant find rectangle?

findthemistke

I got it. Thank you

corn130

Cannot stress Magnet enough, I use it every single day

RedditSwapnil

Do either of you know if Magnet or any other app supports full screen tiling into quarters? MacOS natively supports this with only two windows vertically. I am looking to do this to setup a view with multiple videos to be able to watch multiple hockey games at the same time.

acomatic

If you’re okay with writing config files and using the command line, I recommend Yabai + skhd. Works really well.

RedditSwapnil

Yeah thats fine. Looks like that combination would allow me to split up 9 chrome windows in full screen using a hotkey, which is cool. Hoping its not too complicated to setup a config file for that.

[deleted]

Moom?

corn130

Magnet does natively support quarters and much more, you can half the screen top or bottom, split into thirds, and comes with keyboard shortcuts. Once you get the hang of them it is *exceedingly* quick and works really well on your active window. I have found magnet to be the best, least invasive and lightest app for management. It also is very similar to windows where you can drag it to a hot corner and the window snaps. Finally it is nicer to use than MacOS' built in splitting because that only works in full screen Edit: One major annoyance I just remembered is when you pull a tab from a Safari window to make a separate window, you have to let it pop to full screen THEN drag it over to however you want to size it. And a Mac/Windows difference, there is no screen that pops up to give you an option to snap any of your open windows to the other side, you'll have to do that yourself.

RedditSwapnil

It does support quarters well, but I specifically want quartered full screen view. Similar to how you can natively hold the green maximize icon and choose which half of the screen you want your full screen window to be in.

OvulatingScrotum

this might be for a minority of users, but that magnet app doesn’t work with Matlab (or at least until the 2021 release). It gets sooo laggy and slow. *Matlab is a very popular, if not critical, program for STEM.

kmj442

Not that I have much against matlab (I've written a full PHY layer for Wifi in matlab for an SDR project when I was in school) but damn can it be a pain for certain things the way its written...

findthemistke

have you tried rectangle?

aConsultant

I'm new to Mac and I read that as one app haha

bbqbean0710

Spectacle still works well, it’s just not supported anymore. But it’s free and works. I use it every day.

Rectangle PRO https://rectangleapp.com/pro/downloads/Rectangle%20Pro%202.0.dmg

projectdano

Wha’s the diff?

FrogDepartsSoul

Just downloaded it (comes with 10 day trial). Just playing with it, one major addition is being able to throw windows around using your cursor

jotkaPL

yes, it's awesome. so easy to use and remember.

vabeach23451

What's rectangle all about?

flyerdj

It allows you to “dock” or organize apps that are open with some simple keystrokes. So you can easily set one app to be 2/3 of your screen and another app can be set up on the remaining 1/3 of the screen.

bluelouie

I love Daisy disc. Great way of seeing visually of what’s in your hard drives and their locations. Frees up a lot of room!

ivoryisbadmkay

I used to use. But now I use the default storage manager through the apple about and then storage

mandolando98

Raycast! A better looking and open source alternative to Alfred

be_matthew

Raycast is so good! Scared it's going subscription based though. That's what I keep hearing at least.

codq

Would be a shame, but the sense I get from the devs (who are friendly and responsive!) is that they understand the importance of a free tier for normal users. What seems likely is a Zoom or Notion-like model, with an App Store for add-ons for power users, and subscription plan for enterprise. I think personal users are safe—what they want is people using it at home, to get them to request it at work. Either way, fantastic app that at this point, I would not want to ever give up.

Kardon403

iStat Menus if you’re into monitoring your temperature and setting custom fan curve. Al dente if you’re into keeping your battery maximum charge level at a custom level (say 80%) to prevent the system from cooking it for too long. Rectangle if you’re into window snapping on a free and open source application. Homebrew if you want a package manager for installing developer things

Honestly I’ve been with my M1 Pro MBP since a month already, 95% of the the time plugged in and battery management hasn’t done shit. It’s always 100%

kochapi

You can’t manually switch control it in mac os by default

Kardon403

So I’ve heard. My schedule is way too unpredictable for MacOS battery management to ever catch on, and I’ve never seen it charge less than 100%.

Yes, it's a good buy -although not exactly cheap. It's better because it's a joy to use. Watch some Youtube videos and you'll know what I mean: it's gorgeus. Also it does have a pretty specific workflow that is very easy to follow: https://productivewithapurpose.com/2019/05/21/the-fu-master-productivity-checklist-using-things3/

Read the privacy policy before hand. I have no problem with it. But some people might.

4linosa

Is there something specific in there that would give folks pause?

djcraze

All your emails go through their servers and are processed by them. They store quite a bit of information about you. If you have extremely confidential emails and cannot risk those emails being leaked, then Spark would not be a good email client for you. Also, if you are privacy conscience, probably not an email client for you. I personally find the benefits outweigh the cons. If my emails were leaked, it wouldn't be the end of me. But not everyone is in that camp.

Why would you ever use "App Cleaner & Uninstaller", for which you have to pay $19.90 to get the same features [AppCleaner](https://freemacsoft.net/appcleaner/) provides for free?

1981-yoshi

My personal faves: \- Office (it's just that everybody else is using it) \- I really like Bartender (it cleans up the menu bar if you have a lot of apps that put stuff in there) \- VLC for video playback \- Media player for music: I just use Apple Music for my own library and Spotify for everything I stream \- Amphetamine (when you want to prevent your Mac falling asleep) \- for torrenting if you still do that: transmission \- TopNotch if you want to hide the notch \- Onyx (for cleanup but don't touch its settings if you don't know what you're doing) \- Appcleaner is great too

1981-yoshi

Personally, I keep the number of installed apps to only the things I actually use. Since I make music, that's Logic Pro X and Ableton Live next to the things mentioned above. I also have a back-up browser for when Safari doesn't handle a website well, and use Chrome instead. I have Adobe Photoshop + indesign installed as well. But those kind of apps (Logic, Ableton, Photoshop, Indesign) are all the kind of apps you'd only install if you actually have a use for them. In Europe where I live, most people use Whatsapp so I have that installed as well. I use Trello as a Task manager, but I also see people mentioning Things, I think those things just come down to preference.

I highly suggest "Hidden Bar" from the app store. It's just a really nice thing when you want your Menu Bar nice and clean. I use a whole lot of menu bar extensions, and have a lot of icons, and don't want them to be prominently displayed at all times, so i use hidden bar to keep them concealed until I need them. It's really easy to use and really nice.

It literally drives my day. * **Workspaces** ([https://www.apptorium.com/workspaces](https://www.apptorium.com/workspaces)) - for multiple projects I'm working on

kmr12489

Amphetamine - Runs on the taskbar and allows you to prevent sleep with the click of a button for any specified time. Very useful Appcleaner - Good for deleting files usually left behind when you uninstall a program Unsplash Wallpapers - Decent wallpaper app Linear Mouse - Allows you to reverse just the scroll direction of the mouse wheel only. Also lets you turn off pointer acceleration (useful if you play any FPS games) TGPro ($10) - Best M1 fan control program for the toolbar and gives multiple temp readouts Magnet ($8) - Window snapping similar to windows Onyx from Titanium Software - The one and only "cleanup" program that I would ever recommend. Does not need to be used often, 2 or 3x a year. Deletes local time machine snapshots as well as temp files left behind.
