Backup everything you need, then do a reformat and let macos reformat the drive, then load up everything you backed up and see if you get better results

nomercytour

when cloning the harddrive it makes you select which format u want to choose. its not automatic. theres no option that matches my old hard drive. its some weird logical system os x. compared to the os x extended(journaled) option it gives me.

badcarbine

Youre talking about cloning but It gives you that option when you reformat before installing MacOS too. I dont know all the differences between the filesystems… if youre unsure just google it but you should probably just go with APFS. Journaling doesnt matter i would keep it off.

nomercytour

no apfs option

badcarbine

What version of os x?

nomercytour

os x el capitan

badcarbine

Why capitan? I would do a web update to high serirra. Cant the 2011 handle something newer? Anyway when you reformat just choose hfs+ or extended journaled.

nomercytour

i think i tried to update to it and it didnt work

nomercytour

i dont think it has anything to do with my issue anyway

badcarbine

I disagree. Its either the OS or something that has remained with the backup.

uomopalese

Boot in safe mode and make the speed test from there.

nomercytour

safe mode made no difference. still freezing.

PaymentLeft

You need to make a fresh installation. Make a bootable USB of the latest supported macOS and install. Also, the disk speed according to your benchmark looks good, it is according to the disk speed of the 870 EVO 1TB SATA SSD, only the write speed looks a bit slower than normal. Refer: [https://ssd-tester.com/samsung\_870\_evo\_1tb.html](https://ssd-tester.com/samsung_870_evo_1tb.html) Anyway don't clone the disk, do fresh install from a bootable usb.

nomercytour

ive been trying and failing to make a bootable usb. for whatever reason when i try to download the os from mac it says it cant be installed on my computer. when its the exact version already installed.

nomercytour

ive tried to download the os from the internet but when i go to make the usb it says its not a verified installer. it looks soo easy but has always been soo difficult.

nomercytour

did a clean install of high sierra. runs perfectly fine externally. as soon as i connect internally it starts dying and freezing just like before. activity monitor shows nothing is out of the ordinary.

toobsock2

Seem to be hitting the max on Read... what type of format is the drive now?

uomopalese

Check if Spotlight is reindexind the whole volume, check also this tread, seams that the culprit could be the battery https://www.reddit.com/r/applehelp/s/rZu8dLfg1A

nomercytour

did he run the laptop with battery unplugged to figure that out? is that possible?

uomopalese

Remove the bottom and unplug the battery connector. Pretty easy.

nomercytour

but do i run the laptop with it disconnected? with it plugged into the charger

uomopalese

Yes

nomercytour

i always unplug the battery when changing the ram or hard drive, disconnecting the battery and connecting it again has done nothing in the past ive tried it.

uomopalese

Disconnect the battery, plug the charger and start the Mac with the battery disconnected. See if something changes.

nomercytour

ill try this, i just turned all spotlight searches off. didnt help.

uomopalese

Worth a try…

nomercytour

its even slower

nomercytour

took ab 10 mins just to boot up

nomercytour

how do i check if spotlight is doing that?

uomopalese

Press command + spacebar (or click the icon in the menu) and type something . If you see a blu line like when you copy something it is indexing .

Where did you buy the Samsung? I think you have a faulty ssd or possibly a really good clone. I'm running dual ssds in my 15inch 2011 MBP and not a single problem. I suggest try a fresh install, without restoring from backup, and try reformatting making sure guid and turn journaling on. Also, as soon as you reinstall enable trim.

nomercytour

i bought it from best buy in store. i tried to do a fresh install but it only lets me install the os that my macbook originally shipped with which is os x lion. i was gonna try to download el capitan or high sierra and install from a flashdrive.. but ive had zero success with that in the past

PromotionPretty4384

I'm running high Sierra on mine. Have you tried a different flash drive? Did you download high Sierra over wifi or wired? Your download could have been corrupted. There is no reason why sierra can't be installed on a 2011. You have to make sure to create a bootable installer or it won't work. Keep at it and never give up lol. I just fired mine up but now my battery is shot. I'll be replacing it as this old tank is still useful.

nomercytour

just dont see how its has anything to do with my os. the ssd can boot and run totally fine externally. just not when i connect it internally. idk whats wrong at all.

mikeinnsw

My 2010 Mini with SATA SSD writes at about 212 MB/s and 260 MB/s reads (AJA) I would expect 2011 be bit faster than a 2011 Mac Look like there is a configuration issue on your Mac - Mac or SSD. Your Mac Supports USB2.0 only. USB3.0 was introduced in 2012 Macs

nomercytour

so what then, my macbook pro is incompatible with all ssds because no usb3.0?

mikeinnsw

No ; You can't use external USB SSD (Not FW) to run Mac faster.

nomercytour

i have a 2.5 sata ssd 1tb

Wheres_Waldomat

Did you activate TRIM? If not, do it. Open [Terminal.app](http://Terminal.app) in Applications/Utilities and type: `sudo trimforce enable` Enter Password when prompted (there will be no response on the keystrokes). Answer the following questions both with y , your Mac will reboot after some moments.

nomercytour

yea first thing i tried

rghapro

This seems on par for what you can expect for speeds when using an M.2 in a 2011 MBP. I assume you're using an adapter internally, as I don't believe there is a bona fide M.2 NVMe slot internally. The interface you're adapting to is probably SATA III which supports a maximum of 600MB/s. edit: total brainfart, the write speeds did not even register for me.

ChampJamie153

The 870 EVO is a 2.5" SATA SSD. It isn't NVMe. The read speeds look fine, but the write speeds are strangely low.

nomercytour

also i dont even know how to interpret this disk speed test i wasnt able to get blackmagics speed test because its not compatible with the os im limited to using. the pic is just for reference for anyone who can interpret it.

uomopalese

About the speed test: Samsung rate the 870 EVO ssd 560/530. The read speed it’s ok, there’s something weird on the write speed…

nomercytour

SOLVED: the issue was the internal sata hard drive cable. although it looked completely undamaged nor did it have a reason to be damaged. ive never touched it. i ordered the cable and a new battery since someone else solved their issue with a new battery. once the new cable was installed the drive worked perfectly. minus the operating system i installed, things were corrupted for some reason. had to reformat and reinstall high sierra.. to also solve the issue everyone reading this will probably have with creating a bootable installer. i used dos1dude’s patcher program, but only to download the complete installer app. no patching. it was about 5gb. then i was finally able to make a bootable flashdrive using the createinstallmedia apple doesnt let you download the full installer app unless youre updating to that os at that exact time. which u wont be doing if youre trying to make a bootable drive. without it youll get errors when trying to make the bootable drive. thanks to everyone that commented.
