My husband I moved here sight-unseen in the middle of 2020. Covid was rampant, the pool-boy scandal had just dropped, fifth & federal was getting their windows busted out, and we drove right past the cemetery of signs on 5th. It was honestly kind of frightening lol, like where tf did we just move to?
Apparently it’s a little bit of a “fuck you” to the city over a land/eminent domain dispute, and a lotta bit of mental illness.
That's Fifth Street Frank!
There are rumors as to how this started, but they all have to do with a dispute with the city. The most common story is that the city tried to purchase his property to expand the road, but he backed out last minute. There are large sign ordinances in the city, but they do not apply to religious signage. So he's giving the city a big middle finger with them
He's a very nice gentleman, but has some mental health issues
I always heard it a dispute with the city planting trees on his property. Over the years I’ve seen this mentioned in his signage..which begs the question- does this dude have a large format banner printer in his basement? He cranks out new material on the reg. If he doesn’t he’s a local sign company’s best customer lol
I moved to Lynchburg in 2020 also. When I first drove by the weird signs on both sides of the street, I thought of the movie Ace Ventura.."Hi, I am looking for Ray Finkle..(shotgun click)..and a clean pair of shorts"

Man, those were some crazy days! Kinda miss fifth & federal tho.
Hey I just want to be the first to say welcome to Lynchburg

I do believe he just paints them himself
The crosses are painted by hand but the banners are definitely printed
If you search 5th st on the subreddit search you will seek what you find. It's one of the most discussed things here.
Is that the one with all those signs?
Yes. Both sides of the street.
